The coolest smoking of pipe tobaccos. It's mild and won't bite the tongue. Lightly fragrant with a hint of vanilla and a touch of mint, always appealing.

Like many pipe smokers I started with aromatics and Captain Cool was the first one I really enjoyed. It doesn't bite and has a pleasant taste, room note and aftertaste. The draw backs are that there is very little 'tobacco' taste and a nearly undetectable amount of nicotine. I eventually realized that Cavendish based aromatics just weren't for me. If you find yourself feeling the same way, try a burly based aromatic like Lane's HG-2000.

This blend was very good and has a great "nose" when you open the can. I am not sure it could be described as Vanilla or Chocolate, more like a Speyside single malt in a sherry barrel. I love the aroma and and consistent burn But it does burn fast and should be kept slightly moist to slow down the pipe. I am in the process of mixing this blen with some other McCelland blends and have found it can be a readily mixed and yet remain a great smoke. Smoked in an Ashton pipe.

McClelland - Captain Cool.
Bear in mind that this tin has a few years age on it, that may have adjusted the flavour compared to a fresh tin. But, with this being discontinued, I'd wager most tins in circulation have some age on them!
The mixture appears to have an equal amount of each constituent. However, the black Cavendish has been cut coarser. The mint takes most of the unlit aroma up, so it smells fresh and lively. My moisture's faultless.
In the smoke the mint is quite strong. I find the mint is definitely running the show. The vanilla works as more of a support, offering a sweet, smoothing, quality, but it isn't 'sticky'. The tobaccos have even weight, it isn't awash with heavy black Cavendish. The burn from it's cool and steady, but although free from tongue bite the mint causes a sharp sensation to my palate which I don't care for.
Nicotine: mild. Room-note: not bad!
Captain Cool? Hmmm, I can see why some folks used to enjoy it, but it isn't one for me! Somewhat recommended:
Two stars.

I can't believe that I have failed to review Captain Cool as I've smoked it on many occasions. As some of you fellow reviews know, I love Vanilla Cavendish and this one is a tasty treat and really biteless. I mix mine with Five Brothers (a stout burley loaded with strength but offers little flavor of its own), and relax in Vanilla heaven. Lots of perfection here as McClellands can mist, soak and bathe leaf like no other.

The burley is a little nutty. There's a touch of butter and honey from the lighter cavendish. The black cavendish offers some vanilla. The vanilla topping is mildly sweet. I also get a hint of caramel here and there. The mint is faint, though I did notice it more in the last third of the smoke. Has little nicotine. Burns cool as a reasonable pace with a fairly consistent flavor. Won't bite, and needs a few relights, but it's not goopy, though it'll leave just a little moisture in the bowl. A fairly pleasant all day smoke with a decent after taste, but it lacks the necessary flavor punch to elevate it beyond two and a half stars.

Its ok I guess. The only thing I could not detect was the mint that's supposed to be in there. Tastes alright but burns a little on the hot side. I find that this blend is best smoked in an old briar or the corn cob pipe.

Caption Cool... The note on the tin says “a hint of vanilla and a touch of mint”. Neither was found in the tin aroma, which seemed more cherry like. After a 15 minute drying time under my desk lamp, it was now show time. Light up was easy, followed by clouds of mild aromatic smoke. The casting is very low keyed vanilla taste, with something else, maybe that touch of mint. The mint becomes a little more apparent as you smoke down the bowl, and especially, in the after smoke mouth fell. I found this baccy to be free of any bite or harshness, just lots of mild thick smoke. Overall a very pleasant and low keyed experience. Being somewhat of a novelty, with its hint of mint. Would I buy more? Sure, I can see myself enjoying a bowl or two of this stuff, every now and again. But for now, the tin I have will suffice. If this blend sounds worthwhile to you. You need not worry; McC did their part, very well indeed.

I would not purchase this again. Probably my least favourite aromatic so far. The overwhelming flavour is the mint, I can't taste or smell vanilla. Also is way more mild than I like. Perhaps for a first time pipe smoker the mild strength would be suitable.

Just bought another tin today to mix with some very strong Burley i got from C&D that'll make your head spin! This is obviously a play on words to intice Captain Black smokers into trying a better product based on the same recipe. This is more like 1Q but the added menthol or mint really cools it down. Buy this for the room aroma and mix with something strong. On its own there isn't enough flavor or strength..
McClelland's take on a Captain Black White type blend but using top grade leaf and definitely on a higher tier quality wise. I got a 1Q appearance and cut, Black Cavendish and Virginia Cavendish with a familiar Vanilla / Mint aroma. The aftertaste has a sweet mint finish that makes it very unique. Absolutely the hardest blend to make bite (if it is even possible) and while the bowl might get hot if you blast furnace it, the smoke never heated up enough to bother me and the vanilla / mint topping smoked as cool as ice for me. The only drawback is the lack of Nicotine so I added some 5 Brothers and it was delicious! An excellent newbie tobacco to start as the leaf is high quality, it wont bite and it's aroma is what one thinks of when a pipe is mentioned.
Similar Blends: Lane 1Q.

No bite, but where is the taste? I found it flat, although I noted some improvement as the bowl progressed. The room note is pleasant - in the same vein as Captain Black White and Benjamin Hartwell Evening Stroll, but not as pronounced. I prefer White and Evening Stroll, as they offer a bit more flavour and a more satisfying smoke.
I agree with other reviewers that this blend may fit well with first time pipe smokers who are looking for a super-mild tobacco without bite.

The mint flavoring seems to be a complete mystery on this one. Some will tell you it's overpowering, some will tell you it's not there. Not sure if it's an issue with inconsistent packing or mouth chemistry....
I don't get any mint but the vanilla comes through very nicely. A nice body and smells great in the tin. As advertised, will not bite and quite cool smoking.
I wish I could get some mint flavours because otherwise it's fairly lacking in complexity. I get get the sweetness of Cavendish and vanilla flavours and that's about it.
A very flvourfull and tasty blend, I just wish It was a bit more complex and had more mint.

This just maybe the best all around aromatic out there today. First of all it is really tough to add mint to any blend and not have it simply take over the blend.....try Frosty Mint to understand. They have done a really excellent job allowing you to enjoy the mint.....ok what they call peppermint without killing the other flavors. There is some nice vanilla and also some caramel and chocolate flavors passing through. Now the peppermint does remain the main player but not distracting from the other flavors that pass through your mouth. The blend burns very easy and surprisingly does not seem to bite much at all. Nicotine is very mild so if you like to inhale this is perfect. Room note as you would expect is mild but you can actually smell a bit of peppermint. This is one of the best aromatics I have tried and will be buying more in the future. As far as Frosty Mint, while it is almost unsmokable it is fantastic as a blender certain blends but just a dab will do ya as it is super strong in mint flavor.

This is an AROMATIC. If you hate aromatic blends, then don't buy this! (And for all of our sakes, PLEASE don't REVIEW this!)
Now, having said that, I give you- my review:
The tin description is apt for this one. This is a MILD, COOL SMOKING blend with subtle hints of vanilla. The tobacco is of above average quality from what I can discern, and I would expect no less from the Masters at McClelland.
Though it feels slightly moist in the hand, the tobacco packs and lights with EASE, and smokes DRY and COOL throughout the bowl. Unlike most aromatics I have tried, this one actually tasted better the farther down the bowl you go, developing into an almost nutty, butterscotch flavor towards the end.
You can puff hard on this and it won't bite you. It will smoke warmer and lose flavor, but it will not bite you. Crazy. The addition of natural mint was a great call. I was leery about any pipe tobacco with any association with Menthol in it. This does NOT have Menthol in it! It does contain a very small amount of natural mint leaves- not enough to make it a mint themed smoke, but a vanilla smoke that smoked COOL.
If you like aromatics, or if you prefer "natural," non-cased tobacco but want a change to something mildly sweet (but not artificial or cloyingly so), then give this a go.
I bought a three dollar Missouri Pride cob pipe just for this tin, and it was a good investment.
=EDIT=
I find myself uncharacteristically smoking bowl after bowl of this blend. I don't really like aromatics that much. Really! Somehow, however, I can't stop smoking this. It is definitely cementing itself as one of my permanent selections.

Delightful and lives up to its ?cool? name, because cool it is. Almost arctic cool, but I have yet to find a blend that I could not toke up carelessly, puffing indiscriminately and not get some discomfort. It just you?ll have to try hard with Captain Cool or C&D?s Green River Vanilla for that matter.
The mix is about equal parts red-brown to black, smelling like a traditional American Cavendish aromatic, but not feeling as such because Captain Cool is properly humidified and not sticky.
I did not get big flavor when puffing, but a smooth, mild taste with a touch of complexity for indoor, winter puffing. I tried it for the latter. Some natural tobacco flavor does report. I like this better than its Lane competition. Easily an all day blend one could smoke even with an upset stomach.
This burns dry and leaves a very clean pipe. My wife loves the burning aroma and that the house does not smell of burnt socks or cigarettes the day after.
CC has a traditional, American black Cavendish aroma and taste, without the chemical attributes I associate with popular aromatics. Compared to C&D Green River Vanilla, the C&D is similarly pure, but more austere, a little bit stronger in flavor, less complex and tastes more like vanilla when burning.
I do sense a genuine vanilla but little of mint flavor from CC. CC loads easier than C&D due to GRV the latter?s cut and dry texture.
I will buy this again if I cannot get a McClelland bulk equivalent to save some money. However, I do not anticipate that it will dislodge my favorite vanilla Cavendish blend, 191 from P&W. CC and 191 do different things and complement the other.

This is a good example of truth in advertising: a premium aromatic with no bite. The tobaccos appear to be of good quality, the flavoring is artfully applied and the burning qualities are significantly better than many other heavily cased blends. Best of all, it smokes COOL and smooth -- the flavor iteself is far superior to the like of Capt Black, an enticing melange of vanilla and mint.
I keep only a small number of aromatics on hand as I normally prefer strong perique and latakia blends. Oddly enough, over the last couple of years, I've found myself reaching for this more and more often. I now consider this to be one of the only four-star American-style aros I've come across, along with Autumn Evening and Classic Burley Kake. I was pleasantly surprised, to put it mildly.

One of the top-of-the-line aromatics. I love vanilla and one of my standard smokes is MacBaren Vanilla Creme. This is better, I think. Very aromatic in the tin, to the match, it is rather tame. Plenty enough vanilla but not overpowering, and something else. McClelland says it is mint, but I didn't really notice mint so much. There are some nutty undertones in this. All in all a very good smoke with high quality tobacco that you can actually taste. I'll be keeping this in my rotation.

I bought this blend thinking of Captain Black because of the name. Captain Cool is different in strength and flavor - mild and keeps his cool when smoking. Puffing hard doesn't earn you tongue bite like most other aromatics. In fact, I tried hard to make it bite on purpose but couldn't. The flavoring is also quite nice with hints of mint. Some days the flavor is too weak for my tastes, that's when I switch to something like Captain Black or otherwise. Overall a very nice, cool smoke that is quite mild.

Upon opening the tin this stuff looks and smells great. The tobacco is quite colorful. You almost want to pick it up and eat it. Vanilla and caramel are two of my favorite flavors and they are very present here during the smoke. My only complaint would be that the tin seemed to empty very fast. It lasted me only about a day and a half and alas it was all gone. I would compare this to Mac Baren Vanilla Crème However I think the tobacco in this is higher quality . Certainly the opposite end of the spectrum from those big bags of goopy drug store aromatics . There really are very few really good tinned aromatics for those of us who like a little candy once and a while and this is one of the best.

This tobacco was purchased with the intention of using it to colour my sultan's head meerschaum. Unfortunately, it just doesn't fit the bill. Before I tear into the tobacco, let it be known that I actually do like aromatics, just not this one.
At filling, the tobacco sticks to one's fingers (a pet peeve of the reviewer's). At first light, it sizzles and pops (sign of troubles to come). The flavour never develops past a flat monotone, and the definite menthol element plays havoc with the back of the throat.
Have smoked a whole tin without ever getting through a whole bowlful. Rather a disappointment.

Pipe: Savinelli Quarter-bent
Weather: Cool, sunny, not humid.
Mood: Amused
Modifications: Denicool crystals in lower third of bowl, Savinelli balsa filters (6mm; replaced as needed)
Packaging: 50g tin
Initial Impressions: This tobacco has a very airy smell to it, as if it were almost a weakly mentholated cigarette tobacco; at least that's what it reminded me of. The tobacco, as usual for the McClelland line, was damp and I immediately set about drying it for a couple of hours. The dark/light blend of ribbon-cut tobacco had no stems in it.
Unlit Taste: A very cool and "tobacco"ey flavor.
Lighting: No problems. An initial sizzle wasn't followed by any kind of nasty, steamy biting. Tamped well and relit fine. I was able to smoke the entire charge of tobacco without any further relighting.
Smoking (First Third): A noticeable menthol flavoring is present as a top layer, with a solid butty Burley base and some hints of what seems like vanilla. The smoke was cool and unoffensive. This can be smoked fairly rapidly, increasing the danger that, with regular smoking of this, that I'll forget to puff slowly with an English and pay dearly.
Smoking (Second Third): The flavors started to meld together, with the vanilla giving way to a more nutty flavor. The room note remained pleasant and the flavors, while not complex, were good. This finished out cleanly and turned into a nice, grey-black ash that didn't foul.
Smoking (Bottom Third): The Denicool crystals don't smoke, they just absorb moisture, tar and nicotine. And they do it WELL.
Aftereffects: This seems to have low nicotine, meaning no head swimming or racing heartbeat. It was cool and pleasant in taste and after a good tooth brushing, I was ready to talk to non-pipe smokers.
Overall Recommendation: THIS tobacco is intended for the daycarry pouch and for any pipe you could throw at it. This is for when company is over or for when you're fishing on a nice autumn morning. For an aromatic smoker, this is a mild and cool blend; a nice cheese danish with your morning coffee. For a lover of heavy, rich tobaccos, this could be a nice change of pace for the tongue. I give this a good recommendation, smoke it regularly and give generous samples to friends who need good pipe tobacco, making sure to dry it before I give it away.

I was very excited to purchase my first tin of McClelland?s Captain Cool, after hearing such great words about the product.
As soon as I opened the tin I could smell a wonderful world of vanilla, butterscotch, a hint of something like nutmeg along with the sweet smell of the 50/50 mix of dark and light Cavendish. The tobacco was very moist so I set some sit out on a piece of paper for a couple of hours before smoking. This only enhanced my excitement for the office I had set it out in began to smell of the wonderful flavors.
It packed very easily and even after sitting for a bit, still had a sizzle upon lighting. Right away I could find the hints of the tobacco coming through above the casing flavors. This I enjoyed very much being a fairly new smoker discovering all the wonderful flavors involved with tobaccos.
The first third of the bowl was much the same as the second. The vanilla is perfectly matched with the butterscotch flavoring and yet is not overpowering and as stated before, there is a taste of real tobacco that also comes through. As Britt Park stated I too detect a hint of menthol as well. This keeping with the "cool" idea. The last third of the bowl required a pipe cleaner or two to rid the moisture that was steadily growing. After that the last third lost a bit of the real tobacco punch and nutty butterscotch menthol flavors and settled into mostly a mild vanilla. Very enjoyable down to the end of the bowl.
I really tried to provoke this ?Captain Cool? into smoking hot, but it stayed calm and cool the whole bowl. There was no hint of tongue bit what so ever. It produces a puffy white smoke and provides bystanders with a very pleasurable room note. McClelland nailed this one and I recommend this tobacco to any new smoker looking to broaden their horizons just a bit or for someone looking to sit down and enjoy a good, cool smoke without having to worry about the craft or concentrating to hard on their objective

When I bought this tobacco I was hoping for a lot of mint flavor. I never found it. But this is still a pretty excellent aromatic. You can see mint leaves in it. Maybe you can smell them in the can. But I find this to be an excellent vanilla blend. I don't mean like some drugstore blend. This is a silky smooth creamy vanilla blend, with a large amount of flavoring. Not in production anymore, but I'm glad I bought a few cans of it. No one does aromatics like McClellan. Captain cool proves that. The room note is absolutely crowd-pleasing. This is a fun blend to smoke, especially at picnics and family reunions. You will be showered with compliments.

I let this dry out for 6 hours as it seemed a bit moist. Took only 3 matches to finish the bowl. No bite, which is an accomplishment for an aromatic. Sort of a vanilla, caramel flavor. I didn't get the mint, but I eat lifesaver peppermints every day so I'm a bit minty already.

good. nice aromatic and very gentle on the tongue as advertised. some nice, natural tobacco flavor in there with the tasty vanilla. no notice of said mint. some might find this too bland or lackluster, without enough going on in the flavor department.
i like it quite a lot as it is a safe bet for an always gentle and enjoyable bowl and is generally unoffensive to the noses of nonsmokers.

Got this at a local shop because I liked the tin aroma. After smoking a few bowls this blend has become one of my favorite aromatics. No bite as advertised, lights easily even though it's a bit wet fresh out of the tin, and stays lit. Great taste throughout with a burst of flavor toward the finish of the bowl. I could smoke this stuff all day. If you are an aromatic fan, put this blend on your "must try" list.

This is the best aromatic blend that I have smoked. I am trying to put the cigarettes down for the last time, I found a tin of this dated 06/04 which I had setting in my collection for 2 years, the last time I had smoked my pipes. My usual Virginias and medium English bends were just too hot and heavy because I was smoking to fast, like I was burning 3 packs of full favor 100?s cigarettes per day. I have never had any use for aromatics except when I smoke in public and don?t want to offend others. This blend may be changing that, it is Very flavorful for such a mild blend. I couldn't detect the flavoring in the blend, it just taste good, does not bite, and my wife says it room note is good!!! Captain Cool burns clean and dry, in any pipe I have put it in and left no after taste in my pipes. For those new pipe smokers, or returning to pipes from cigarettes, this one is a must try.

This tobacco reminds me of a high-end cigarette. It's got a lot of very mild burley and light cavendish in it, with a slight minty overtone that lingers after the smoke is over. Nothing spectacular, but true to its name it does not bite. For a first-time pipe smoker this might be a good introductory blend. I can't recommend it for smoking on the trail too much because it's quite hard to keep lit. In a pinch you could barter it to folks looking for tobacco for rolling. Maybe I'll toss this tin in the earthquake kit.

My first aromatic blend. If you are not looking for a tasteful smoke yet want a cool smoking and wonderful smelling tobacco, this is a good choice. It has a brandy flavoring and scent to it making it pleasant to those in the room with you. This tobacco is difficult to keep lit and can pose a bit of a hassle to clean from a pipe, so using a rare, expensive piece may not be a wise choice for this blend.

If you like the taste and smell of blends like Capt. Black, this is a step up in my opinion. If you want a real tobacco taste and satisfaction, this probably won't do the trick. Smells very nice.

Captain Cool is a pedestrian, utterly lackluster tobacco, wholly lacking in any redeeming quality except for its relative, though not total, bitelessness. Mostly black cavendish (yawn) and burley, it has a thick casing that makes it rather a chore to light and keep lit. Once burning, it's basically a Dream Castle or Smoker's Pride product, offering an uninspiring and dull smoke.
I'm only glad I didn't pay money for this stuff.

This is quite possibly one of the best mild aromatic blends that I have smoked. Very flavorful for such a mild blend. I couldn't detect the mint in the blend, but I thought it tasted of butterscotch and vanilla. I intentionally smoked it fast and couldn't get it to bite at all. It left no goop in my pipe.
For those that enjoy a very mild aromatic, this one is a must try.

When I want to smoke an aromatic blend, the mild blends from McClelland can?t be beaten. The casing is fairly mild, but very pleasant. The tobacco is quite moist, as aromatics are wont to be, but it burns nicely nonetheless, and tongue bite is almost impossible. A great aromatic to keep on hand.

Not as good as Mellow Mack, which is definitely tastier. Like the other McC aromatics, it's sticky and wet but not goopy. It is supposed to have some mint flavoring, but you can't feel it in the tin aroma or in the taste: what you can feel is just a slightly fresh impression on the palate. Overall sweet, with some evident vanilla notes, not unpleasant at all. If dried a bit, it behaves much better.
Anyway, the one and only king remains Mellow Mack!

This is a delightful blend for the aromatic lover or an english blend smoker who wants a gentle change of pace. The aromatic quality is mild to medium with a very pleasent room note. The vanilla is apparant with just a light touch of mint. Another flavor - that I can not identify - is barely noticable in the background. It arrives just slightly damp in the tin. It lights well, stays lit even if you take a 10 minute break - and as promised burns remarkably cool and even throughout the bowl. You can not make this tobacco bite even if you try! The pure tobacco taste comes through well and is always upfront - somewhat surprising for a aromatic. Overall, I would describe this blend as a mild and more interesting comparision of Hunters Blend Retriever. If you want a mild change of pace or perhaps have suffered some tougue bite and need a break - this blend is worth trying. I smoke it on a regular basis.

In the tin it's a moist mixture of just about 50-50 black and dark brown strands. It has a strong sweet-sour aroma which I find pleasant.
This packs and lights easily, and true to its name, smokes cool. I suspect there may be some menthol or other mint flavoring. It produces rich billowing smoke in which one detects sweetness, vanilla, maybe caramel, and surprise, some actual tobacco taste. I'd class this as a strongly aromatic tobacco but not as powerfully so as say Lane's BCA.
So if you like unapologetic aromatics you'll find this very satisfying. If not, you won't.

I haven't smoked this yet, but P&T Magazine said of this blend: "It is refined and not overpowering, but there is no question that this is an aromatic....maybe some vanilla, maybe caramel, maybe something else. The pleasant surprise is that the Virginias come through with the wave of a match, along with an unfolding sweetness, and a crowd-pleasing aroma captures the room. Yes, it tastes like tobacco, refined and delicate tobacco. Enen at lighting, this is cool, and just stays that way no matter how provoked. This is not remarkably cool, it is astoundingly cool, and you could puff all day without fatigue. Highly recommended for the aromatic fan."
I'll do a review on this when I pop my can, but for now, I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt.

This is not my usual kind of tobacco, sticking mostly to latakias and the occasional dark virginia. I tried this because of a review by William Serad in the latest Pipes and Tobacco magazine. The name is derived because this is an attempt to create a cool burning aromatic.
Captain Cool has a strong aromatic casing not unlike many of the Lane bulk blends many of us started our pipe smoking oddysey with. I hope that most of us have moved on to real tobacco since our youth. Captain Cool comes very damp. I have left some out on a paper plate for 5 days and it still has not dried out. Even after drying it like this, it still sizzles as it is lit. I would hesitate to put this in a good pipe, because it would take a while to smoke that flavor out. Captain Cool does burn quite cool for this sort of blend and I guess if this is what you want, this is a good blend as aromatics go. The flavor is pretty much what you would expect from a sweet aromatic.
Save this for when you want to impress women.
