A medium English with the smokey, woody sweet Cyprian latakia taking the lead. The Virginia is a grassy, mildly citrus sweet back up to the lightly nutty, lightly sweet burleys, while the perique provides a very minor spice note. There’s also a buttery, sour woodsy, musty flavor from the Smyrna which is obvious in nearly every puff. The sweetness in the mixture is less than I’ve indicated as there’s some dryness to the smoke. Has a mild nic-hit. No bite, no harshness. Burns at a moderate pace, cool and clean with a rather consistent flavor. Has a nice after taste. Not really an all day smoke. Currently made by Sutliff.
I must say this was a rather pleasant surprise. The tobacconist gave me a packet of this to try. Already an economy tobacco, it was free to me. And guess what? I rather liked it.
The taste is rich and hearty, with a touch of natural sweetness. Smacks notably of black pepper. The black pepper becomes more pronounced as the bowl warms.
Good tobaccos, moisture level, and balance. Not up with the big names but much better than expected. No humectants detected. This may have a slight topping as it smells better than it should. A good value and possibly a good starter for those who are new to the English and Oriental blends. Not for the Latakia Zombies. This one is well balanced.
