Consolidated 501: Light English

(1.50)
African, Turkish, and Virginia tobaccos with latakia added wherein the latakia does not overwhelm the blend. The smoothest latakia blend ever to be presented to the pipe smoker.

Medium width ribbon cut, with what looks a fair amount of Latakia. Moisture level was a bit high but it packed and lit very well due to the nice cut. This is exactly what it says it is; a light English blend. If you've been smoking English blends for a while, I doubt this will do anything for you at all. But,.....if you are new and would like to try an English blend without a lot of peppery spice or a real nicotine hit, this would be an excellent selection.

I believe Altadis produces all of the Consolidated blends these days.

In an effort to support the local tobacco shops in my area, I visit them from time to time and sample their wares. Unfortunately, their wares are usually Lane or Altadis bulk blends.

This particular blend is a rough cut mix of medium brown with a few black flecks. Pouch aroma is musty, with a mild smokey presence. This stuff feels a little greasy from the humectant. One match lighting, lots of light grey smoke.

The flavor is very thin, and although there is no mention of burley for this mix, it reminds me of a cheap knock off(!) of Middleton's Walnut.

In short, I can not recommend this blend for any reason. I couldn't finish the first pipe, and to make up with my offended briar, I lit up a bowl of Early Morning Pipe.

Ah, all is forgiven...
