Recently my father and I had the pleasure of attending the Kansas City Pipe Show. I had a great time (I even won third in the smoking contest!), and spent far too much money on things pipe related. I also had the wonderful opportunity to meet Eric Nording. Mr. Nording is a true gentleman and all around nice guy. He has great attitude and a booming laugh bigger than he is! The day after the show, he even called me up on his way through Oklahoma City to Dallas for business, and took my father and I out for dinner. Getting back to the review (yes there is a point!), during the weekend my father commissioned Eric to make me a pipe as an early Christmas Present. This freehand beauty was an immaculate piece of work. All I needed was the perfect tobacco to break it in with.
Enter B-93! I knew that I would dedicate this pipe to Va tobaccos, I just wasn't sure which to start with. A friend of mine gave me a tin of this at the Pipe Show banquet, so I took a gamble and lit 'er up. Now B-93 is described on the distributors website as being a light aromatic. Nowhere on the label is this stated ,thankfully, or I might have never given it a whirl in the new pipe. As it was, I did, and the match was made in heaven. This baccy starts out with a nice Va zing. You can detect the topping, but only slightly. The smoke moves along nicely with just a bit of sharpness on the tongue hinting at tongue bite. This never came to be however, and I smoked it right out of the tin with no drying out. The second third of the bowl settled into a nice, straight tobacco experience. Nothing to complex just some nice smoke. The real surprise comes at the end. The last third of the bowl has the nicest room note that I have ever smelled. Not in a vanilla cap't black way either. In a sweet pipe tobacco way, with true tobacco aroma. My wife was delighted and I think I may have found a new winner. I have since tried this tobacco in several other pipes and find that it does better in a bigger bowl, with a medium pack. It smokes all the way down with only one light and leaves no dottle. A winner for sure!

After I “stole” a couple of bowls from my friend Taki (I wanted to “steal” a third one, but we had an argument), I decided to ask a friend of mine to bring me a tin from Denmark. At first, because of my anticipation, I smoked it greedily and it terrified me as it bit my tongue. It wasn't the tobacco's fault though, as once I smoked it more calmly I liked very much and it didn't cause any tongue bite. It is a mixture of three different Virginia tobaccos, which have a natural sweetness. Very easy to smoke, with caution though. It leaves no moisture in the bowl unlike other Virginia blends. It has very pleasant room note. Flavor was constant throughout the bowl. At first I thought to return the three “stolen” bowls to my friend Taki, but in the end I gave him nothing. I smoked it all myself.

This, like all of the Paul Olsen blends, is a mixture of very high quality tobacco. I am not sure what the status of availability is on these at present. A quick internet search yielded no availability, and I believe that has been the case for some time now. I have heard rumors that they are still available in the EU, at least at the Paul Olsen shop.
This offers a very straightforward virginia taste. My tin is very old, at least seven years, and very dry. There is not much, if any, of the original casing note left, but perhaps a new tin would offer more of that essence. Even bone dry, this bites in a harsh manner, and is very difficult to smoke without experiencing any tongue bite. I am no beginner to pipe smoking or VA tobacco's, and in fact most recently enjoyed a bowl of the Paul Olsen My Own Blend 111 (which is much better than this, in my estimation) a few hours before smoking this. The difference was striking. The 111, another VA blend, tickles the tongue, but stays under control with respectable puffing. B93, however, is just brutally hot and harsh from the first to the past puff. This, as the Danish so love to do with VA's, has been spritzed with an additional light sugar casing, which really ramps up the tongue bite factor.
Another factor which precludes a higher rating is the fact that there are so many other, better VA blends out there. Many of the Mac Baren roll cake style blends are similar to this in flavor, but much more forgiving (a higher burley content, I suspect) than B93. Several English brand VA's from Dunhill, Gawith, etc., also offer better choices along roughly the same lines.

This is and all virginia danish tobacco from Paul Olsen and the My Own Blend stores in Denmark. I have smoked only a very small handful of these tobaccos in my life - all of them being excellent tobaccos of ultra high quality leaf. I just cracked open a fresh tin so let's have a look!
The first thing to hit you is a wonderful, but light aroma of apricots, brandy and hazelnuts. This is what my senses are telling me anyway. The tobacco itself is a medium brown in a rough ready rub consistency. It looks and feels very much like a dutch style cavendish such as Troost, Sail or Amphora. It is not wet, goopy, sticky or reeking of PG and the tobacco has a silky smooth feel.
I've experimented with packing this very loosely at the bottom and firmer near the top. This seems to work out pretty good. Usually takes two really good charring lights to get it going. Once going, however, the smoker is treated with a wonderfully smooth tobacco with intermingling citrus and nut like flavors. The tobacco taste is sweet, of a medium full body. Tabacco taste is not at all lost in the flavoring and reminds me of Stokkebye's Luxury Twist Flake.
At every relight, one can sense the heat and threat of tongue bite being just off on the horizon. This settles down quickly though, and in my mind, is a direct result of the naturally high sugar content leaf used. This tobacco smokes like that of a typical matured virginia - lots of sour notes in the upper third moving towards a richer taste in the middle and a slight pickup of strength in the lower third.
I inhale a few puffs to test it's strength - no problem and definetly no air cured leaf in it. The nose is good and it seems to have more strength than I originally remembered - a definite full blodded medium. The upper half of the bowl has quite a few interesting things going on with the interplay of flavors. By the second half, everything has caramelized and remains quite consistent until the finish.
I highly recommend this rare treat to imtermediate and veterans smokers, but would caution novices to stay away unless they can smoke very slowly and have mastered the ability to control the rate of burn. I have a strong suspicion that this tobacco is capable of inflicting a nasty case of tongue bite if one isn't careful. This and the other Olsen's I've tried are enough to make me wish I lived in Denmark. They ain't cheap and aren't exported to most countries. Next time you order a pipe from FF Piber, ask for a sample - or better yet, buy it if you get the chance an you'll be rewarded!

Paul Olsen - B93.
Personally, I'd say it's more of a broken flake than a ribbon; my tin includes a few that could still use a rub. I couldn't picture exactly what Fenugreek was, but when I took a sniff of the tin I was reminded; the tin has an easily noted aroma of the herby little blighter! It also carries a good hint of pineapple.
To be honest, I needn't have worried about the fenugreek as I can't detect any of it in the smoke. I do however, get a mild pineapple flavour: nothing too strong, but a slight zestiness.
There isn't much to report on the tobacco tastes; a gentle ripe Virginia, some citrus, some hay, and a little fruitiness. Other than those, it's a simple flavour.
The nicotine's quite weak from this; it's one of the mildest straight Virginia's I've had,
This is a nice blend. The pineapple adds a little spark to it and prevents it from being just a 'plain old Virginia'. For me though, a 'nice' blend doesn't equal a four star blend! I think three stars is just right.
Recommended.

This is a famous Olsen blend with naturally sweet Virginia leaf that is ribbon cut and quite satisfying. The presentation of the blend is signature "Danish."

This is an edited review, I had lastly given it a rather scathing review. It was stingy and burnt the back of the throat badly. I threw in a couple of moisture buttons and it has vastly improved this smoke. It still stings a little, but the xmas spicy cinnamon and orange peel tastes stand out much better. A nice winter's morning smoke.

A quality tobacco, with a rather nice taste. But the tongue bite is too much.

A ready rubbed flake by the look of it. A very strong resemblance to Bjarne's "Exclusiv One", for better or worse. Has that same Danish flavoring (Orange peel?) that I am not enamored of. Otherwise, a tasty Virginia. I am going to try drying the heck out of some. This has worked for me in the past to subdue overly strong flavorings. My first impression: Compared to all the great Virginias available this one rates no more than two and one-half stars.(out of four)

I was given a sample of this tobacco by a local tobacconist. Had he not given it to me, I probably would not have bought it. Now, having tried 2 bowls, I can say with certainty I would not spend my money on it. Overall, it is a flat, bland flavored tobacco, prinicpally of ribbon cut VA's. It wants to burn hot, so the same care you would use with any VA will apply here as well, lest you get tongue bite. The first part of the bowl had some decent VA flavor, but it soon became washed out, near flavorless. Not one I can recommend.
