Ascorti Latium

(2.50)
Complex and flavorful. This unique blend pleases the palette that desires a rich, full taste. Virginia flake and a subtle fragrant aroma. Medium in strength.

I was recently sent the discontinued Ascorti line of tobacco by a customer who did not like them. Latium was not really a bad smoke but certainly not a bell ringer. Just a grassy flake that burned slow and dry. Not much nicotine hit... but again, not much flavor either. Not sure I would advise anyone to purchase a tin if they can find one.

I don't find this tobacco to be so "unique" a VA blend as per the tin description. Similar to Reiner's Long Golden Flake, it comes as an ~ 3" wide but continuous, long flake that has been folded back multiple times into the tin. The initial moisture content of the brown and golden tobaccos and perhaps the processing results is a soft flake that is easily separated for packing. However, as the tobacco dried out in the tin, its taste became even more tangy and harsh. Although a cool and even buring smoke, even initially, the first 1/4 of a smoke was just too tangy for my taste. As things progressed, the taste improved but I still feel that there are more enjoyable VAs that I've smoked and reviewed.

This is my first review. I would have to say that my stand by tobaaco is Dunhill Light Flake. I am a flake pipe smoker, I'm never as happy with a loose blend. To me taking a flake and folding over putting it in the pipe loosely works best for me. After smoking my first pipe of Ascorti Latium I wanted to order 4 tins. I could not believe I would enjoy anything as well as my stand by. I managed to control myself and finished the tin before ordering more. The flakes are wide large and layered. I split a flake for smoking in my usual Stanley sitters. The tobacco burns evenly and right down to a fine white ash with little or no gurgle. The side stream aroma is great and the taste and after taste is pleasing to the tongue

This tobacco reminds me somewhat of Hamborger Veermeister, only a bit stronger taste. Like HV, it doesn't seem to have any bite. Pretty good, but Solani flake is better.
