Haddo House is the stately home of the Marquess of Aberdeen, designed in 1730 by William Adams, at Ellon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is also the name of a lake and mountain in British Columbia. Finally, Oliver Haddo is the name of the necromancer in W. Somerset Maugham's novel THE MAGICIAN(1907), a character inspired by Maugham's acquaintance with the notorious British occultist, Aleister Crowley (1875-1947).

Just a bit of Magick! [note the spelling] is how G. L. Pease characterises this mélange, and whether it conjures up the gracious living of one of the loveliest houses in Scotland, or the transfigured beauty of the Canadian West, or merely the thelemic prestidigitations of an illusionist, you will agree that, when he gets around to choosing allusive titles, Mr Pease doesn't kid around.

We all know the great Virginia/Périque mixtures: Escudo, Three Nuns, Saint Bruno, possibly Dunhill's Elizabethan. HADDO's DELIGHT now joins them. It is very much final proof of G.L.'s mastery at taking up something old, and making it new and delightful.

The savoury sweetness of Virginia is the basis of this composition, yet the plain-spoken burley, subtly flavoured, never lets it grow wearing. Cavendish prevents bite, and puts velvet on the smokiness. But the greatness here is in the use of Périque: it gives the whole composition a heady liveliness, an air-borne edge, that makes the whole thing stimulating and fun. I put this in a Dunhill prince, sat in the balcony, and gave God thanks that, when he created the Manhattan skyline, he also created pipes and Périque.

Dare we now hope for a DIANE de ROUGY companion mixture?

The red and brighter Virginias are very slightly grassy with some wood, earth, bread, tart and tangy citrus with a moderate amount of tangy dark fruit. The red leads here. There's a fair amount of plumy, raisiny, figgy earthy, and peppery perique that consistently perks up the experience from beginning to end, and is an important secondary player. The dry, woody, earthy, nutty white burley provides a slight sharpness and strength in a minor role. The unsweetened black cavendish is a little noticeable, and helps smooth out the mix with some sugar. The cocoa notes are extremely mild, but I catch a hint of them here and there. The sweet rum is mildly applied, works well with the tobaccos, and mildly sublimates them. The strength is medium, while the taste just crosses over that mark. The nic-hit is a couple of slots short of the medium threshold. Won't bite or get harsh, and has few small rough edges. It may need a little dry time, but leave a little moisture or risk losing some of what makes this a very complex tasting product with a mild aromatic feel. Burns cool, clean and a tad slow with a mostly consistent flavor. Requires a few relights, and leaves little moisture in the bowl. Has a pleasant, lightly lingering after taste and room note. Not really an all day smoke, but it is repeatable. Three and a half stars.

This is one of those tobaccos that I knew from the first couple of puffs would become a favorite. The tin aroma reminded me of the brandy flavoring in Barbary Coast, which I enjoyed. It should be noted that I rated this as "mild to medium" in the flavoring category but to be truthful, the nose of it was mild to medium. This flavor came out in the smoke but was on the mild side.

The perique "feel" is strong, in that it definitely tickles the nose and the back of the throat, but the perique flavor is a simple enhancer. The virginias played the lead role to my taste and the perique and brandy (or rum or whatever) were vocal backseat drivers. Excellent body to this one and it was just a "fun" smoke, as long as I didn't overdo it, as the nicotine could be just a bit over the top in the large bowls I favor. The flavors did a lot of dancing and were brazen almost to the point of haughtiness. But it was all in fun. A complex smoke, this can also be smoked as a dessert blend to relax me after a tough day. As much as I enjoyed Barbary Coast, this variation on that theme struck me as superior, and I immediately bought a 16 oz tin. The only downside to this is that it willfully smote any attempts at DGT. It simply didn't like being extinguished and relit hours later. But that's ok - I don't often DGT.

Yes, this could be considered an aromatic by some people, and there's nothing wrong with that. Highly recommended as something different and... yes... fun!

Fig Newtons? Pavlovian response? After reading the above review, I don't know what old Howie's been smoking, but I don't think it was Haddo's Delight!

All joking aside, this is not bad stuff. In fact, I call it a dose of heaven on earth. I have had a love affair with Haddo's ever since it hit the market back in 2002 (I think that's when God gave Pease the ingredients for this manna). The bowl I just finished was from some 2004 vintage Haddo's and was it ever goooooood! If you have not tried this blend and enjoy complexity with strength, then you owe it to yourself to partake of this weed. It contains several varieties of strong and well aged Virginia leaf along with a nice helping of true St. James Parish Perique, white Burley and some Black Cavendish. It leaves a tobacco aftertaste in your mouth that is just this side of heaven. I prefer to smoke Haddo's in the evenings either just after a workout or just after dinner. This blend deserves attention and that's why it needs to be savored slowly (sipped rather than puffed). Truly one of the all-time great blends (IMO, of course).

Haddo's Delight has ignominiously ended my long-running streak of 4 star blends from Greg L. Pease. I gave it a last, college try this morning, then I unwound with a bowl of Sextant, which is a proper booze-laced GLP blend, IMO. Adding injury to insult, HD ghosted 4 of my pipes, bad, and it stunk up my clothes; and it's not even strong!

Popping a young tin quickly tells you most of what you need to know about smoking it as all else is obscured by the rising scent of plum brandy. No figs, and no "fruit" (fruit, schmoot...), just the plum brandy. Only after a period of acclimation could I barely discern the tobacco. The lot is deep, rich and pungent, all at once, but I'm hard pressed to say particularly and exactly what I smell (apart from the brandy...). If there's anything fermented in there (apart from the brandy...), I've missed it.

HD's rough, chunky ribbons have perfect, minimal water content in the tin, and they are easy to rough up, load and light. At first, given the strong tin note (and all the talk about it), I was surprised that the flavor (apart from the plum brandy...) took so long to arrive. Initially, there is - nothing. In view of the Perique, I would not puff hard, but the flavor picked up after the first 1/4. The Cavendish is almost tasteless vs. the Perique; ditto, the burly. The VAs finally arrive past 3/4, too little and too late, for my money. The Perique is another matter. It's first on the scene (after the plum brandy...), and it quickly snowballs. Fast, and/or strong puffers will get righteously "spiced", and how, and this may well be at the root of most of the complaints about HD's excessive "strength".

Revisiting the "strength" issue, I rate HD at just over "medium". If you think HD is strong, I recommend you be careful with many Pease blends, especially Triple Play and JackKnife Plug. OTOH, if you want something that is actually (quite) strong, with great, strong tastes, try Sillem's Commodore Flake.

All in all, if you really, really like Perique, and you love plum brandy, you might possibly like Haddo's Delight. And who knows, perhaps long aging can redeem this problematic blend. I'm not holding my breath.

Update: At 15 mos. the brandy is, IMO, the best part of the smoke, lending a nice aromatic quality to the initial "flavorless" period. After that, it's still just too much Perique, and not enough else, as before. While I like Perique, this "blend" is still lost on me.

Update: after almost 4 years rest in a Mason jar HD is finally ready for smoking! If you can find some that's been so aged, and you are good with plenty of Perique, I heartily recommend you smoke it. The alcohol is gone, settled into a rich, sweet plum that imbues and enhances the generally "fruity' smoke. There is not much in the way of the usual pepper, but there are very intense, Middle Eastern dessert spices that most will want to smoke slowly and snork gently. The VAs are still mostly subsumed, and the lot is well-melded. The white Burley puts a slight, bracing, bitter edge on it that I quite like. In brief, it's still "too much Perique", but now it "works", and all's well that ends well. I'm glad I hung onto my stash.

Haddo's is another winner from the Greg Pease. One thing that intrigues me is just how much this blend changes as it has time to age. I've been lucky enough to try it fresh, aged 10 years, and a number of points in between. Regardless of the age, a few things seem consistent:

The tin note is a combination of tangy tobacco with a plum brandy topping. The combination of the topping and the perique give the tin note a little something reminiscent to chocolate covered raisins. The smoke and mouthfeel are also very consistent - heavy-bodied, quite a bit of smoke, and a fair bit of nicotine strength from the white burley and perique.

Otherwise, when it comes to describing the taste of the smoke, itself, I think it's necessary to break it down into a few different ages categories:

**1. Fresh --Fresh from the tin, Haddo's is loud, bold, and brash. The Virginia is still a little rough around the edges, but not too sharp as its nicely rounded by the cavendish. The topping is more apparent here then in older versions, and the plum/brandy taste is easily found in the first half of the bowl. I wouldn't go as far as to call it truly an "aromatic," but the younger the blend is, the closer it gets. Also of note is that the perique is very peppery at this stage, and goes a long way to clearing out the sinuses!

**2. Moderately aged (2-6 years) --The topping begins to fade into the background, but it is still detectable. With it being less dominant, you get a better sense of the VA and Burley leaf in the blend, and you taste those tobacco components more than in the fresh version. Here, something magical starts to happen between the topping and the leaf - the subdued flavor of the topping really complements the natural characteristics of the tobacco, and it's a match made in heaven. The perique at this point is still very peppery,but has begun to take on the characteristics of dark fruit.

I think this is really something special. The topping of dark fruit and sweet alcohol diminishes in its own right but goes a long to support the increasing natural sweetness and dark fruit qualities that result from the aging of the leaves in the blend. WHAT A TREAT!!!

**3. Well-Aged (7+ years) --The topping is barely detectable. In fact, in samples aged 9 and 10 years old I haven't been able to taste it all except, perhaps, in the very first lighting of the bowl. What remains is an excellent quality blend, tasting nothing but the sweetness of well aged Virginia with a bit of the burley to carry it along. The perique has now lost a lot of its peppery quality and instead lends its characteristic "dark fruit" qualities to the blend. With this much aged, it has very little in common with its fresh form, but is a top-tier VaPer in its own right.

So, to sum up, the older the blend gets the more sweetness is owed to the aged VA rather than the topping, and the more the perique offers "dark fruitiness" as opposed to peppery-ness.

For my money, Haddo's is best between 4 and 6 years old. It is at that point that you can still taste the plum brandy topping, but in a way that fully supports and complements all of the component tobaccos but doesn't stand out in the crowd. As a perique lover, this is where you find the best combination of pepper and fig/raisin, as well.

Bottom line: I call this a 3-star blend for the purposes of this site, but because age plays such a huge role, I would break it down as:

Fresh/Young: 2.5 Stars Moderately Aged: 4 Stars Well Aged: 3-3.5 Stars

Pouch Aroma: Ok, let me go on record saying that this stuff smells really ODD in the baggie. It's got a sweet note that reminds me of maple sugar, and right alongside - neither dominating nor being dominated - is the earthy, compost-y smell of Perique and rich orientals. At first it was almost unpleasant, but after burying my nose in the bag a few times methinks me likes it.

Appearance: This looks to be about 25% dark tobaccos, 20% golden-yellow, 20% red and the remainder is a tawny honey-gold with a greenish cast. This is a nice looking tobacco cut mostly short and coarse - 15mm x 2-3mm average. It looks perfect for a short, wide bowl so I packed it into my old Hardcastle bulldog which is a favored pipe for VA mixtures.

Packing and Lighting: This stuff packs easily - actually, I had to be careful not to pack too tightly due to its being just a little moister than I usually prefer. Still, the light hand triumphed and the first flame brought me mouthfuls of soft sweet smoke which had a peppery tingle when blown out of my nose and a very mild and sweet room note.

Exposition: After a very light tamp and relight (not really needed, just habit mostly) the pepperiness has mellowed just a bit, leaving a mild tobacco flavor to entertain me. It's not as full as something like GLP's Cairo but it's got a bit more physical presence, producing great billows of thick, light blue-grey smoke. It's a bit early to be sure, but I don't sense much potential here for biting and it would make a great social smoke for those who can't handle flavored tobaccos. The adorable young lady who works at the jewelry store across from my work says it smells great, and quite unlike any of my usual smokes. So far this is a keeper!

The Story: Word of advice - do NOT accidentally inhale this one! I smoked cigarettes for too many years but have managed to lose the inhaling habit. On occasion though, I do it subconsciously, mostly with milder tobaccos in what must be an attempt to get 'that old-time feeling' or sumpin'. Well, this stuff tastes mild, but underneath that velvet glove lies a fist of pure unobtainium! I had to set my pipe down and let Thin Lizzy finish "The Boys are Back in Town" before I could stand to relight . . . this stuff packs a teensy wallop!

The flavor is holding quite well; it's a bit gurgly but nothing too terrible, and after my involuntary rest period it has taken on a flavor reminiscent of popcorn of all things! Not in a bad way, it just has some of the same nutty, buttery flavor components underneath its nice sweet virginia taste. In classic VA fashion the flavor is intensifying toward mid-bowl though, and some of the sweetness is turning woodsy.

Denouement: Reaching the end of the bowl, I'm finding quite a bit more strength than I would have guessed initially. It reminds me of Two Friends' "Redwood" in this respect; mellow start, smooth but full-flavored mid-bowl, then BAM! upside the noggin with the nicotine stick.

Is gooood smoke, Kemo Sabe!

The ash is a dark salt-and-pepper and very fluffy and the bowl walls are left clean as a whistle. This tobacco has a nice mellow start, an interesting middle and a gloriously relaxing finish with nice smoke volume and room aroma throughout the entire smoke. The burning qualities are faster than normal but with no bite. Granted, it's not the most complex smoke I've had, but I get the feeling that a dedicated pipe would bring out many nuances in time. The last few shreds are blackened leaf scraps and the heel is dry with a nice coating of ash for future cake-building.

Pros: Mellow initially with a good progression of strength and flavor, great burning properties, nice smell for those around, lots of thick smoke and no bite. I'll buy some when I find out what it is!

Cons: It almost starts out too mellow and some may find it a tad powerful at the finish, but anyone who likes naturally sweet tobacco but doesn't care for the preparation and slow smoking properties of VA flakes should be able to overlook these 'problems'.

My second trial of this was in a family-era Sasieni 'Cromer', a group 2-3 billiard which smokes exquisitely well. The experience was almost identical to the first - I smoked it entirely at work and got a LOT of compliments on it and not a few queries as to what I was smoking. You can imagine my initial sheepishness when I had to say "Umm, I have no idea" before explaining the BPTT concept. I like this better in larger pipes though, as the little Sasieni was down to ash long before I was ready for it to be finished. . .

This one definitely gets an 85, for I can easily dance to it!

Alright. Haddo's Delight is a tricky one!!!It has a very weird smell upon opening, which invades the nostrils and stays there for a while; it's definitely a bit strange. And rather strong. That smell is hard to explain, rather spicy, with a powerful note of damp earth after a light rain ( Hum, I guess Poetry is not among my many other talents...but this is an epistemological exercise). My wife says it smells like dried prunes, I wonder where she gets it...I can't, myself, detect the smell of cocoa and dried fruit as it says on the tin.

As for the tobacco itself, when I read stout, I expected mainly a dark tobacco. But it's not: rather brown, golden brown and shades of black. The cut is long and thin, no presence of ready-rubbed flakes: all loose cut, and it's a nice change! I recommend the tin to be dried out a bit before smoking, because this tobacco is a real man's smoke, if you see what I mean. If you're starting off your pipe smoker career, stay away from this blend, or you will repent! It might even make you sick to your stomach! This blend is for the experienced pipe smoker only, and you need to have measured yourself with the strong English blends to be able to deal with Haddo!

I selected my Stanwell Buffalo and Chacom Carrare for this blend, both medium sized bowls. Curiously, upon lighting, the Burley seems predominant at first, but it fades away after about 5 minutes to be replaced by the rest - VA, the more substantial Périque and I cannot really make out the unsweetened Black Cavendish, whose job is supposed to compensate and soothe the strong overall taste. And boy, this gets stronger and stronger as you go! Haddo's Delight has a tendency to leave a slightly sweaty bowl by the end (which must be provoked by the Burley, I suspect, and the fact that the tobacco is still rather damp). I think there might be more than just a "little air-cured white burley" in this mixture. Personally, I do not really enjoy Burley, but it's a minor factor.

I must say, I like this tobacco! Haddo's Delight is strong and satisfying. The nicotine is not lacking, you won't feel like having another pipe full shortly after. This is the kind of smoke enjoyable with a fine measure of Bourbon whiskey, Single malt or an old Cognac. Or smoke it when you need to extract yourself from an absolute boring day. Feeling tired? Smoke Haddo's, it will bring you back to life pretty darn quickly!

The only negative side is that Haddo's Delight leaves my tongue rather beaten up afterward. But it's a nice alternative to a traditional English Blend - the only blend about which I let my wife win because she tried to tolerate them but can not stand the smell of Latakia...

Don't let the weird smell stop you from trying this blend, it's worth it. Extremely different, it is a unique blend, like nothing I've smoked before. Definitely recommended, but in small doses.

Update

My first tin has been opened for 4 or 5 weeks now, the weird damp smell that tickles the nose has settled down a lot. I do detect now some discreet tones of coco, both in the tin and when I smoke it.

I started smoking this tobacco when it was too damp. I've learned from this mistake. Didn't know, it was my first attempt. Mind you, once dried out properly, it is still strong but the taste is different - the Burley barely sticks out anymore at first-, it's more on the good side of bitter-sweet black chocolate, the full victory of the magnificent Périque de Louisiane! Haddo's Delight smokes extremely well and the bowl is dry upon completion. The room note is rather strong, though - according to my ever attentive critique- but tolerable.

Haddo's Delight is a great tobacco, a masterpiece of blending. I am truly impressed by this one. Don't let first impressions dictate your relationship with this blend. I've been a pipe smoker since 1988 and this is the first time that my first impression proved wrong. For some reason, I refused to get rid of my three tins and kept trying. My instinct has not let me down! If you rely on that first impression,you might miss an absolute jewel! This blend needs time, patience and 5 or 6 pipe fulls before it reveals itself in its full glory. You need to be patient because it's like nothing else available on the market and redefines the smoker's conceptions of pipe tobaccos. That's what makes it so great. The folks at G.L. Pease really hit the Bull's eye with that blend!

So, I must change my verdict from recommended to highly recommended. It will never be an all day smoke for me, but it will always have a privileged place among my favorite blends.

G. L. Pease - Haddo's Delight (Original Mixtures).

The tin-note's lovely: alcoholic, fruity, and sprightly. Although it's badged ribbon there are a few different shapes and cuts in there, and sadly this includes a couple of twigs. The appearance suggests a lesser amount of Black Cavendish in comparison to the other varieties of tobacco.

I note how the popular opinion on the added flavour is mild, but I can't say the same. It's not overwhelming, but to my tastes it's quite strong: the combination of alcohol and fruit makes for a sweet liqueur type flavour. The main tobacco taste is unequivocally the Perique, and this is reflected in the quantity of nicotine: medium to strong. I struggle to get much flavour from the others, they have quite a formidable force to contend with regarding the Perique. The burn from Haddo's Delight is steady, and it has a medium speed.

I'll finish on the point I don't like: it bites.

This would be a good blend for those who like aromatics but get fed up with the constant weakness and want more N. But I can't say I'm mad about it, I'm not saying it's bad, but it doesn't earn any more than two stars from me.

I a writing this review after finishing a 2 oz tin. My first impression was that this was a little harsh and disappointing. I smoked it in the same Peterson 999 and then switched to a GBD pot, and I will say that I acquired a taste for it. I think this blend benefits from a dedicated pipe, and this may explain part of the improved experience. For me, it smoked better in the larger bowl, and I picked up more of the flavors.

There is a subtle quality to this blend despite a solid dose of perique and a little more nicotine than most things I smoke. You can pick up the sweet Virginias and a slight topping that is hard to identify. It almost seemed like banana. It was not much like the things I usually smoke, and it made a nice change for pace. I was sorry when the tin was done, but I did not order more.

This tobacco left a somewhat pleasant ghost in the two main pipes I used with it. I would pick up just a trace of the perique and the fruit in the next couple of bowls after it was gone.

This is a review of Haddo's Delight with 9 years of age on it.

Charring light is lovely and a forward sweetness hits the tongue along with the undeniable bold perique pepperiness. A tangy wine like flavor is immediately noticeable and intertwines perfectly with the sweet round bottom note. The beginning bowl shares a somewhat similar flavor profile to Peterson's Irish Oak, however Haddo's is much more refined. There seems to be some sort of topping at play here, perhaps brandy/rum. Whatever it is, I do believe that it plays an important role in enhancing my enjoyment of this blend. It deftly softens the smoke, enhances the room note and adds a buoyancy to the chutney like sweetness of the perique.

The flavors and strength build quite nicely down the bowl. By mid-bowl a slight bitterness comes forth and as the sweetness deepens a harmony is struck that both softens and elevates the spice kick like no other perique forward blend on the market with exception of perhaps Escudo. End bowl flavors are sharp, intense, briny, complexly layered, voluminous and extremely satisfying.

This is a sweet, stout, spicy mixture. I would call it spirited and I am not just referring to the topping. However having sampled both fresh and aged versions, I can confidently say without any doubt that age dramatically tames the rowdy acerbity that I experienced in a fresh tin. I think a few years of age pushes Haddo's out of the "For Perique Lover's Only" realm and into that of the piper who enjoys a rich, strong smoke regardless of a mixture's components.

This is one of the few blends that has left me feeling pretty woozy. I enjoy it after a good meal and because I eat lightly during the day, I reserve this blend for the evening after dinner.

Obviously a few more tins for the cellar are required.

Ah, Haddo's Delight.  A masterpiece. 

A truly unique tobacco and among my all-time favorites. 

Tin note is of liqueur topping, similar but lighter to that of Barbary Coast. A brandy note, with a touch of rum.  I find this a variation on a theme of toppings shared by Haddo's, Barbary Coast, and Cairo.  Beyond this initial note are the expected aromas of dried fruits: figs, dates, raisins. But in Haddo's the dried fruit flavors are more pronounced than the average plum-sided VaPer. After all, Haddo's Delight is not truly a VaPer, but rather a hybrid - I suggest it is the King of Hybrids. 

While Haddo's ages divinely, it is smokable right out of a fresh tin. Presentation is ribbon cut, so minimal dry time is needed: maybe 10-15 minutes prior to packing. Takes a match well and, once going, requires very few relights. 

The initial flavor is dominated by the topping, but this soon gives way to the most amazing VaBurPer flavors out there today. Rich, thick, creamy clouds of smoke as the bowl progresses with a delicious and copious Perique of the stewed fruit persuasion. The Virginias are soft and biteless, the burley provides a solid foundation to it all, and there is a hint of sweet, natural Cavendish making periodic appearances. 

Once deep into the first third of the bowl, approaching mid-bowl, the deep, dried fruit flavors assert with an amazing interplay of slightly sweeter stewed fruit. But the sweetness here is anything but cloying. It's a deep, rich, refined and natural sweetness, held in check by a touch of burley and an array of Virginias that simply could not be more smooth-smoking.  

After mid-bowl, an amazing transformation takes place: the plummy-side Perique flavors begin to yield to a more savory note. The dried fruits are still there in the background, but the peppery side of Perique shows its face.  This is the real treat for Perique lovers as this is the only blend I'm aware of that demonstrates both sides of glorious Perique tobacco - and shows each side in all its glory. 

To my palette, this blend is a symphony of flavors masterfully blended: balanced, nuanced, deep, contemplative, and simply unique even among celebrated tobacco blends. I simply cannot say enough good about this blend - and I'm not the only one: odes, websites, and many a pipe has been dedicated to it. Very creamy mouthfeel and a surprisingly cool burn when sipped.

 I can't give five stars, so I'm going with four.

I know most people say that in order to get the most out of a particular blend one must smoke at least two tins or more and I have in no way done that... yet. I just couldn't wait to tell you all what I thought of this blend.

I have this habit of reading tobacco reviews a lot while I'm sitting online at work and at home, the wife gets a little annoyed by this I think but I really enjoy learning about tobacco. So I have been looking at different perspectives on this tobacco and as with any tobacco I suppose there are people who love it and people who loath it. I happen to love it after only one bowl no less! In my internet search I stumbled upon a review by someone who drew my attention to the fact that Oliver Haddo was a caricature of Aleister Crowley in a book called "The Magician" written by W. Somerset Maugham. And I would say that Mr. Crowley would probably be pleased by this blend because it really is Magick. Now on to the review.

Upon opening the tin I was greeted by a strong smell of some sort of alcohol, not quite sure what type, I'm thinking rum. What ever the smell was it smelled delicious. I loaded up my La Scala because it has a slightly bigger bowl using the method suggested by Rich Hacker where you trickle in tobacco and tap the side of the pipe to settle it and lightly press the tobacco with your finger and repeat till at the top. I filled it fairly loosely as per the suggestion of Puff. And off I went to to balcony. After the lighting had been done I settled into a wonderful smoke. The taste reminds me somewhat of Peterson's Special Reserve 2007 only much much better because Haddo's smoked with no bite whatsoever. It did burn a bit hot but that was, in all fairness, probably my fault because I was smoking it a bit fast because I liked it so much. I could definitely taste the perique which is a big plus as I am becoming more and more a fan. It had a pretty strong nicotine content, made me feel like I should have eaten before trying out this one. Never the less I really did enjoy this one more than I have enjoyed a blend in a while. This is only my second foray into Mr. Pease's blends and I am not sorry for it. My first was Maltese Falcon which I still enjoy very much.

This will be a part of my rotation for the foreseeable future. I plan on getting a few more tins to begin my cellar I can't wait to see how this changes with age. It can only get better and that makes me very happy. I give it four stars.

One more club sample I had the other day from a 16oz tin dated 051005. A good 14 years under its belt. This has a very, very strong tin odor that reminded me of Nehi Grape even though this says it is flavored with rum. Another of the pipe club members noticed the same thing. This is a very perplexing blend in that the flavor and taste though very powerful does not remind me of rum but then again, I don’t partake of the Devil’s Nectar anymore and maybe it is a Spiced Rum. But definitely a liquored flavoring whatever it is. About halfway down the bowl it did tame down a little bit. Maybe it fermented in the tin too long because I really could not detect the Perique much though it did also have a little spiciness to it at times, maybe that was the Perique coming through. I would have classified this as an aromatic if it was up to me. Not bad, glad to try it but will not be revisiting this one.

I wanted to love this blend, but it was a little too much for me.

The topping is very fruity and alchololic, like rum soaked prunes. This flavor, combined with the heavy dose of figgy Perique, resulted in a very dark, spicy, and one-dimensional smoke.

I love what artisional blenders like Mr. Pease are doing to expand the enjoyment of our hobby, but this blend was just too Perique and booze forward for my tastebuds. Perhaps it will settle down a bit with age (I refuse to give up on a tin).

Appearance: Somewhat random cut, consisting of about 60% reddish leaf, and 40% darker. I could not separate the perique from the cavendish by eye.

Aroma: A definite perique presence tingles the nostrils, adding a slightly sour note to the sweet and earthy aroma of the blend. There seems to be an additive, or special process here.

Packing: Packs easily into small and medium size pipes. With this much perique present, I did not try any large bowls. I like perique, but prefer moderate amounts.

Lighting: Lighting is about average for a va/perique blend, neither too slow to cach, nor too quick.

Initial flavor: Wow, it?s in you face. Big red virginia flavor, nutty cavendish background, and the raisin/fig taste of perique. There is something slightly sweet in the Cavendish, but it?s identity is elusive.

Mid-bowl: Everything settles down into a lovely melange with layers of taste. There is a substantial fullness to the smoke with just a touch of tingle. Puffing too fast increases the tingle, so slow puffing is definitely in order. Moisture is sometimes present, but not excessive.

Finish: Like many perique blends, this finishes a little bit stronger than the middle but not unpleasantly so. Ash is dark gray, and there is little or no dottle.

Summary: An excellent blend for the va/perique fanatics, and I will return to it periodically. It may be too rich for an all-day smoke, but one bowl satisfies your craving for quite a while. Wonderfully rewarding for evening relaxation.

Particularly liked: Richness and flavor.

Particularly disliked: For me, just a bit too much perique. YMMV

Haddo?s is serious tobacco, the stuff of professionals. It attempts to reach the apex of blending perfection to such a degree that it is at once magnificent and overwhelming. Though I try not to be pedantic in my reviews, this one requires a breaking down of the elements.

Appearance: large, shaggy, course cut strands of rich, blackened Cavendish, sweet hearty Virginia and bold, tangy Perique. It is thickly cut and thoughtfully packed like a McClelland, but it is in a class by itself. Careful detail obviously went into marrying these tobaccos. Each of the leaves is blended perfectly to form a dazzling interplay of colors and aromas.

Tin aroma: Beautiful and bouquet like. Figs, stewed fruits, plums, prunes and coconuts create one of the most delectable and inviting aromas offered in a two-ounce can. I could revel in the tin aroma alone. It?s almost a shame to light this product.

Packing: Firm yet loose. It?s moist enough to pack easily yet dry enough to get started on the first light. There is just the right amount of firmness and sponginess.

Burn: Like a fine cigar, it has its moments of billowy, creamy smoke and other times when it seems to hit a knot and choke. I only needed two additional relights, but you never know when the draw is going to get a bit stubborn on you. The pipe tends to get a bit juicy as well, though it leaves the bowl virtually dry upon emptying.

Taste: Haddo?s reacts to the room and the pipe in which you are smoking it as well as to temperature and humidity. Each day (or is it by the hour?) it seems to behave differently. This is not predictable and one-dimensional by any means. This is not a blend for the neophyte. It takes a seasoned palate to appreciate Pease?s skill. The Cavendish cools and relaxes. The Virginias provide just the right amount of sweetness and the Perique is not a garnish, but rather, a main course. The Perique awakens a vivid, sweet/sour tanginess on the palate that enlivens the taste buds but can overwhelm if you don?t react well to that leaf.

Room note: Aromatic, chocolaty and pleasant, though it fails to leave a lasting impression. Entering the room five minutes later, the aroma dissipates with very little distinguishable traces.

Effect: This has a physical effect on me, probably due to the large amount of Perique in the blend. Sometimes it?s a buzz, other times it?s a queasy feeling. Be careful not to inhale a drop of the smoke or a spot of juice. It will close your throat and make you gag. Don?t smoke this while walking or operating a vehicle. Find a comfy sofa in which to relax and chill out for a while. Haddo?s is like a sinfully rich dessert. You want to eat more and more, but if you do, you?ll feel sluggish and regretful later.

Summary: Haddo?s is one of the truly great accomplishments in the art of connoisseur tobacco blending. Greg Pease is a skillful and imaginative perfectionist. Nevertheless, unless you have the stomach and physicality to endure Perique, be forewarned. HD is like a ten-course degustation at a French restaurant: a delectable, over the top sensory adventure that can quickly go from pleasurable to nauseous. I suppose this is the case with anything that aspires to reach the summit. It?s almost too much of a good thing.

Because this is such a complex beast, I must give Haddo?s two separate ratings:

The only way I can somewhat enjoy this blend is to sip it slowly. That goes against my nature and ruins the experience. Gets harsh and nasty if I smoke it like I usually do. Having said that, I can see where others may like it. Somewhat recommended.

Update 4/5/06: I somehow could not bring myself to throw away the rest of the tin, so I kept trying to smoke it. Vile, nasty stuff. Just kept getting worse and worse. Today, I poured the rest of the tin into the toilet and flushed it. Now I have an unopened tin dated Jan 7 2001 that I do not want. This was the first offering from the house of Pease that I tried. I acquired a can on the strength of the reviews here. I opened my can in Deadwood while on vacation.

Very nice appearance in the can, and the tin aroma was heavenly. Notes of fruit and spices with a nice sweetness. I could not wait to pack my pipe.

I have since packed this stuff in several pipes ranging from a full bent CAO meerschaum to a full bent GBD to an il Ceppo to a Kirsten. I nearly always have the same result. The bowl starts out delicate with a very nice sweet and (I hate to use this word as it is in the tin description, but it is the perfect word) piquant taste. I am loving it. Then I start to get this tickle at the back of my throat. I smoke Escudo and Kingfisher and do not have the same tickle, so I don't think that it is from perique in general. Then the flavour goes all to pieces. I smokes with a burnt, charred taste that I can't get past. I end up dumping the bowl.

One time, in the CAO the entire bowl was delicious, but only one time.

I smoked about half the tin, and am now going to throw away the other half. Very disappointing.

What moniker said below. I'll add that the room note is really very enjoyable, everyone liked it. But I kept tasting this constantly for four days after smoking it. I give it one star for my personal enjoyment. Others really, really like this tobacco; since it's GL Pease it's no doubt 4 stars for quality. But if you're not a fan of perique to the point of fantasizing about smoking it straight, I'd skip this one.

I am fairly new to pipe smoking, so I won't embarass myself or insult others by trying to adequately describe this tobacco. Suffice to say after trying a few of Mr. Pease's offerings, he may well be a genius. This one makes me wonder if he is master of some black art to which few are privy. It's wonderfully interesting.

I was surprised how much I disliked this one. Surprised because it was one of those that I was sure I would enjoy. I tend to enjoy the VaBurPer blends and I also love GL Pease Blends. This was not what I expected. It is like smoking an aromatic Va Per. I don't know what the topping would be, but it felt like someone soaked this quality leaf in a cheap grape soda.

It was horrible and a one star to my personal tastes, but as I do know a few people who enjoy it and it was possible to finish a bowl of this in a cob or a Meerschaum, I will give it two stars. It also packs a decent nic hit if you can bear to get through a bowl.

Much better than I expected. Very fruity note. Usually not my thing but it sounded good. It lit nicely nothing out of the ordinary. After the first few Puffs I was afraid it was going to get harsh. But it did not. After five minutes it reached its sweet spot. And everything came together instantly. Smooth, rich, and delicious. I might compare this to Royal yacht. But this is better.after 20 minutes I did not want to put my pipe down, to refill my drink. It's that good.

The first thing to strike you with Haddo’s Delight is the fragrant topping. It is quite intense, think of Petrson’s Sherlock Holmes or Sunset Breeze. It makes me wonder why it is categorized as a Va/Per and not an aromatic… It is a liqueur topping which reminds me of liqueur infused chocolate-coated raisins. At first I thought it was delightful but now I find it sickly…

The cut is a nice ribbon but moisture was high, my tin needed drying. It behaves very well, lights easy etc., but I am quite ambivalent about this tobacco. At least the first half of the bowl is dominated by the liqueur topping plus a Perique dark spicy taste. Though the smoke is smooth, it seems to lack body and leaves an acrid aftertaste I’ve experienced with cheap tobacco… It’s not a tobacco I enjoy inhaling as it irritates my throat and gives me a buzz in the head. I’m not sure if it is excess nicotine or some kind of chemical in the topping.

On the other hand as the smoke progresses and if sipped, it produces many nuances apart from the fruit liqueur notes and the piquant spicyness of Perique. A nice sweet woodiness, cigar-like notes, the dark mellow smokiness of Cavendish.

But while I think it’s more complex than the aforementioned Peterson tobaccos, I do not enjoy Haddo’s Delight as much. Actually, however much I tried I did not get myself to really enjoy it all. In any case this type of tobacco is not exactly my cup of tea…

I read other reviews mentioning that it mellows and gets better with age, so this is what I am going to do, I am going to cellar and forget it….

Haddo's Delight, I like the naming conventions of the G.L. Pease blends (unlike C&D's names which I am not crazy about most of the time). The blend itself is quite unique. It is essentially a VAPer with a twist of a pinch of Burley and Cavendish along with a topping. The tin aroma is quite good but it isn't tobacco, or at least it isn't what you would expect from a pure tobacco blend. I can faintly make out the raisiny perique but the what I smell is apple brandy. I am not sure that is actually what it is but that is what I smell. The flavors in this blend are quite interesting, I don't think that this can be categorized by it constituent components as a VAPer in the flavor department...at all. I get notes of chocolate, brandy (apple brandy), toast, earth, The perique is noticeable in the feel, tingle in the nose on the retro hale, some "itchiness" in the throat. Occasionally I can do get a bit of white pepper in the flavor but it comes and goes. I have always found Burley blends to be rather "flat" in terms of mouth feel. The smoke feels less dense to me. This blend seems to almost be more like a topped Burley blend with the richness of a Virginia blend. I am not sure what types of VA's are in here but I think there are some reds as that unique earthiness comes through quite a bit and the sweet topping masks any other distinguishable VA flavor for me.

I really like this smoke but I have a hard time putting into any other category other than an aromatic...an extremely well done aromatic. I recommend this blend but if you are in the mood for a traditional VAPer, this ain't it.

This is an old favorite. It helped forge the path that I am on now by making me realize the possibilities outside the realm of Latakia mixtures. It took some time to understand and can actually be unforgiving if smoked in the wrong pipe but if you are patient and find a pipe that smoke Haddo's well you will be greatly rewarded. It's a very complex smoke so I like to smoke this one when I have nothing else to do but concentrate on the plethora of woven flavors that delight my palate. I haven't smoked this mixture in years but I have a large tin in my cellar and I'll be popping the lid when it reaches 10 years of age. I've had this one fresh and with several years of age one it and it smokes great either way but I do prefer at least 6 months in the tin to let the flavors marry a bit before I lock and load. The room note is nice but non-smokers will probably still give ya the stink eye if you're smoking this near them. The nicotine is in the "just right" park (medium) and makes for a good, satisfying smoke any time of the day but I usually enjoy it most on a nice and cool evening. This one never fails to take me to that special place. One of my favorite Pease mixtures, no doubt.

I am not a fan of Pease's virginia blends in general, but this one is quite good. A dash of added flavour adds a complexity and richness his other blends tend to lack. There are levels though, this is not up there with Peterson and Gawith; it is too thin flavourwise and leaves an ashy note on my tongue. Want something light and salty that is far from full, by all means try this. I can't see myself revisiting it though.

Taste: First light reveals a slight sweetness from the virginia just below the flavour of the topping; mainly alcohol (more rum than brandy and not so much of the plum). The perique grows more noticeable towards the end half of the bowl, as the spiciness continuously grows and intensifies. The topping strikes me as a tad bit peculiar, as it really is quite loud and present throughout the entire smoke. I am certain that it is the alcohol that plays the leading role, but it does not taste like any brandy or rum that I have ever imbibed - rather it reminds me of a crossover between the brandy in Barbary coast and the miscellaneous topping (I really have no idea what it is comprised of) of Samuel Gawith's Kendal Cream. Does it work? Well, I think so - it is unique and adds a character to the leaf in the blend. Now let us talk about the mentioned leaf. It is my opinion and belief that Mr Pease and the gentlemen at Cornell & Diehl have poor virginias to play with; their virginia blends always come across as a bit bland to me (whereas I love their burley ones). This actually plays in favour of the topping, as it is allowed to be dominant and take charge without me grieving the masking of the natural virginia taste. Now, though the topping is rather forward this is not an aromatic like, say, Autumn Evening by C&D - there is a balance that allows for a prominently salty side of the tobacco to play alongside the added flavours. They kind of have each other's backs. I still find the overall sensation somewhat thin, underwhelming, as it is quite cautious and never really grabs a hold of me.

Mechanics: Rough cut, a bit moist out of the tin, easy to pack. No bite, medium nicotine. Burns just fine but a moist smoke that will require some pipe cleaners.

Maugham called The Magician "lush and turgid" which I think could stand in for the perique in Haddo's Delight.

Looking forward to more literary influences - maybe Josef K's Kake where you keep getting a tiny hint of Red Virginia but you can never tease it out, or Ivan Fyodorovich's Flake, in which one doubts the existence of burley?

After hemming and hawing for a while I cracked open an aged (5 yrs.) tin of this and I couldn't be happier. Flavorful, well burning, good strength, lovely complexity, not too much, not too little.

The plum smell is there at the beginning and calms down as the Perique takes over but never enough to overswhelm it's basic flavors. "Stout" is a nice adjective -- you've been enjoying a pipe, no doubt about that with the room note and taste, and are completely satisfied after a good size bowl. I've been smoking this in a bigger Radice, and love it at nightwhen the world calms down.

This was a blend I had wanted to try for some time. It wasn't at all what I expected, but became everything I wanted.

When I first popped the tin I dug my beak in and buried it in the tobacco. I thought of honeydew melon immediately. The colors were mostly dark brown, some terra cotta red accompanied by some strips of black (cavendish). Each time I opened the tin that melon scent turned more into a bread and raisin.

I can't help but feel this is the reverse of most multiple course meals. With the dessert (sweet plum/sweet bread notes) coming first and the end is where we get into the meat of the blend. Despite being heralded as a VaPer, it is very much a VaBurPer.

The first 1/4 or so is sweet and soft having the Virginias, Cavendish and topping play the main roles while the Perique adds a slight zest. The Burley follows suit and mosts supports the VA while adding a slight amount of rustic baked bread and a hint of earthiness.

Further down the bowl the sweet VAs, Cavendish and topping begin to dwindle opening the curtains for the Perique and Burley. An almost complete 180 is made and what was soft sweet becomes piquant tangy, what was subtle becomes robust and assertive. The latter half of the bowl reminds me of a leveled out Burley Flake #3 with a very slight topping. It's delicious.

In my experience, this blends needs at least an inch and a half of bowl to slowly work it's magic. Too small of a bowl and it doesn't get the proper time to develop and has some acrid moments. Again, for pure VaPer lovers this probably won't satisfy; if not potentially repulse. After all, this is made with C&D tobaccos and it's extremely apparent in the last stanza. But anyone who enjoys their burleys and is looking for a bit of a zesty kick with some sweetness on top, this is the one.

I found this most enjoyable in my briars over meers and mortas. Well done Mr. Pease.

I recieved a tin of Haddo's as a gift from a friend. Aged about three years, the smell of figs, plums, and rasins greeted me upon opening.

Packing was easy, a charring light, and off to the races. Flavor starts light, but increases as the smoke continues. The perique makes it presence known with a spicey sweetness throughout the bowl. I can't help but think of the taste of fruit cake or spice cake.

Ageing does wonders for this blend. I have a tin dated 2009 that should be a sublime.

While Haddo's isn't a daily smoke for me, I do keep it on hand at all times.

This tobacco is hands down my favorite tobacco blend ever! If I were told I could only have one tobacco for the rest of my life, Haddo?s Delight would be my first choice. Everything I desire in a full bodied blend is here, in abundance.

Appearance: This looks to be about 25% dark tobaccos, 20% golden-yellow, 20% red and the remainder is a golden colored. It is varied in cut yet mostly medium ribbon cut.

Tin aroma: This is probably the most complex mixture I have ever encountered. The deeply fermented Virginias and perique are evident, with rich earthy tones and under-currents of fig/raisin and cocoa. The unsweetened Cavendish and Burleys are just there under the surface. I smell an enticing mixture which immediately gets my mouth watering, there are tones in this mix that hit me in that spot rather like a good steak sauce (although it?s nothing LIKE steak sauce).

This tobacco is nearly perfect in moisture and I employed the ?Frank method? for packing each review smoke. I smoke this tobacco in any pipe that I?ve dedicated to Virginia mixtures. For this review I?ve chosen a large clean Edward?s Husky Canadian, a very ?neutral? pipe with nice thick walls and a long stem for all the best in flavor preservation.

Lighting usually is a single match affair, I find that the ?Frank method? usually eliminates the need for much of a ?lighting tamp?, though once in awhile if I pause or just let the pipe go out, I might have to re-light it. As expected, the initial flavor is very smoky with the familiar ?peppery? sensations one expects from perique. I am also greeted with very deep fruity tones from the Virginias and the Burley and Cavendish lend their nuttiness and fuller body in turns. There is a very slight sweetness to it probably from the Virginias and an additional note from the rum casing. There is no single way to describe Haddo?s, the complexity is immediately apparent and builds throughout.

Mid Bowl: Approaching mid-bowl, the fullness tends to build and the flavors mix and match very nicely. The layers of flavors build and build, each mouthful of smoke tasting slightly different from the last. As a former cigarette smoker, I?m not particularly bothered by the nicotine content here, and I often employ the ?French curve? method of inhaling slipstream smoke nasally. That is not to say this isn?t a very full tobacco, often relaxing me nearly to the point of sleep. Accompanied by some good ambient music and some good reading material, an enchanted evening ensues. I cannot help thinking that hobbits, wizards, dwarves and the odd Ranger would enjoy this mixture very much.

Home Stretch: As end of the bowl approaches, I?m absolutely in smoker?s heaven. The fullness and character of this blend really come into their own during this final stretch. The Virginias have deepened to a wine like goodness and the perique keeps it all honest. This is a heady blend indeed and care must be taken not to over do the puffing rate. If I can discipline myself enough and keep the puff rate down I can enjoy Haddo?s until it resigns itself to ash.

I wanted to try this mix that arouses so many different passions among people who have smoked it. Yet another example that everyone must try and judge for themselves. In my case and in view of the success that I have had with the tobaccos of G.L. Pease so far, I was hoping for good things. The tin on which I base this review is five years old. According to some users, it is a tobacco that can change a lot depending on this circumstance.

When you open the tin, the smell of the liquor is quite intense, and mixed with the tobacco it reminds me a lot of champagne. The cut of the tobacco is quite irregular and it has a degree of humidity that I would say is on the high side, but this does not prevent it from burning well. During smoking it can produce some humidity.

In the flavor section, the coverage overshadows the other ingredients that make up this mixture, in such a way that it is the liquor that has the leading role from beginning to end. Only in the retronasal exhalation you can feel a little the natural flavor of tobacco.

So this is not the type of mix I am going to go to every day, and I am not going to repeat the purchase of another tin. I rate it three stars because I have no reason to say it is less than that, either. It just isn't for me.

10/26/2020: For those of you who, like me, have found that the flavoring hides the flavor of the underlying tobaccos too much, I recommend letting a few months pass after opening the tin and aerating the tobacco a bit so that its coverage loses strength. For my taste, the experience improves a bit, although the tobaccos that are below seem too neutral to me. Since I had to fight with the tobacco to make it work moderately, I lower it one star.

Presentation: Tin looks the same as all the others in the Pease Original Series. Black and white label with blue accent and pipes photographed in the background.

Cut: Thick ribbon cut. Acceptable moisture but a little dry time won't hurt.

Tin note: Smells like chocolate and raisins.

Tasting notes: Creamy with a light smooth rum taste on light up. Becomes woody (cedar as well as a darker wood), smoky, slight spice, bready, and a moderate creaminess sticks out through most of the blend. Slight chocolate here and there. Spice kicks up some once the blend starts going but is not overbearing. You taste the rum in the blend, but it doesn't taste like a cheap chemical additive and is quite mild and smooth in the blend. Will not offend the tongue -- and that's coming from someone who doesn't like most blends with toppings.

Mechanics: This blend packs, burns, and smokes well. You can smoke at a moderate pace and be alright but for best results, slower is better.

Extra Remarks: This blend is delightful. This is the right way to top a blend. An example of a rum topped blend that does it poorly would be Gawith Navy Flake -- even drying that blend out to bone dry crunchy, it will still bite you and is still difficult to light. A similar blend to this is Barbary Coast although I have not smoked that one with review level focus, but I do know I enjoy Haddo more than it. Anyways, Haddo's Delight is full flavor, quite complex, and a very unique blend. Outstanding -- 4 stars!

How could a serious pipe smoker not like this blend. I pick up the perique, burley, and cocoa notes easily. The room note probably needs some work, but is satisfactory. No doubt it is an acquired taste, this tobacco is sure to please many.

This is a brilliant take on the VAPer genre. I must tip my hat to Mr Pease for this effort. It is a delicious though somewhat bold/assertive blend when fresh, but age in the cellar does wonders at softening the rough edges and sweetening the Virginias.

The rum topping or the “exclusive process” that is indicated on the tin makes itself known in the tin bouquet, the smoke itself(where it adds to as opposed to distracts from the tobacco), and the aromaticity of the sidestream.

The Virginias are sweet and without teeth. The burley likely contributes the the nicotine level which is just past medium. The Perique adds pepper to the retrohale early on in the bowl. As one smokes down and the leaf at the bottom becomes “auto stoved,” the Perique lends more of a dark stewed stone fruit character. At this point the retrohale can border on the glorious sense that “I’m blowing stewed prunes out my nose!”

Dryness level out of the tin is ideal. The rough cut takes a light easily and burns well. I am so totally impressed with this blend. Even if VAPers are not your thing, I would strongly advise the reader to consider this blend. A masterpiece in the annals of tobacco blending!

When I opened the first tin of this I was taken aback by the note. A rather strong fruity aroma arose (from the rum, I guess), and I haven't been a huge fan of that aroma from a VaPer. I more often associate the smell of what is popularly referred to as "McKetchup" with quality VaPers. I approached the blend with caution. It packed and lit well, and the fruity aroma carried over to the smoke. After about three bowls, I stepped out and bought another tin.

I must have adapted to the taste quickly and now find it really good. Nicotine is medium and the room note is pleasant. I have had no problem with the blend smoking hot even though I'm a rather heavy puffer. Although I wouldn't consider this an all day smoke I certainly recommend it.

Presentation: Haddo's Delight comes in a chunky chopped ribbon. My tin had a melting pot of shapes and sizes. Throughout the tin, there are dark pieces of what I believe to be the perique or black cavendish that need to be broken up a bit more than what was provided. Amongst the darker portions of perique and black cavendish, lies medium brown/red virginias and a few brights and the lighter and smaller chunks of white burley. Nice sugar crystals had formed on the darker tobaccos due to the age of the tin, which was eye candy.

Palate: The newly opened tin hits you with a plum and raisin aroma, with a slight feather tickle from what seems to be minuscule vinegar to the nostrils. Very strong topping, but not nauseating. This blend is complex. It offers a deep earthy bouquet and diverse taste. It's somewhat smooth and while the rum topping is heavy applied in the tin, it doesn't particularly overwhelm the tobacco taste, but is noticeable. The base of Virginias is mostly reds from what I can gather, which offer a delicate sweetness, with a hint of bright here and there. The black cavendish adds a creamy dimension to the mouth feel and retrohale, while the perique is a little spicy, yet more dark fruit natured than anything. The burley is barely detectable, as I feel it may have been added to round out some of the rougher spots. It does however have a lovely side stream.

Performance: When I first smoked this blend, it didn't consistently give me the same flavor and was hard to keep lit due to the uneven cut. I'm not sure if this was just my tin, or if this is how all the tins are, but I feel that it could use a re-work in how it is packaged. Either new or aged, Haddo's Delight needs some breathing time to settle down. Even with the 4+ years of age, it was unrefined and had some sharp edges that needed to be dulled. Lights with two or three charring, and stays lit until the last 1/3 of the bowl. Requires an additional light. Burns at a medium pace, not too fast or slow. Medium to medium/strong nicotine hit, yet varies on your tolerance.

Conclusion: This blend sat for another year in the jar before I came back to it. It developed a lovely deep dark chocolate aroma that was absent when initially opening it and the plum/raisin smell was diminished greatly and not sharp. Perhaps I needed to let it mellow a bit before truly experiencing this popular blend. I can see why so many people like it, but first impressions are everything. I enjoyed it after it went to rehab for 12 months and found myself reaching for it every night for two weeks as my nightly smoke. It's a delectable smoke and its complexity shines despite its shortcomings, but I can't see myself cellaring any more than one or two tins of this tobacco, due to the factors mentioned above. There are many tobaccos in which I prefer to this as of right now, especially as this is a Va/Per and I have a better palate for other blends in this category. I'm afraid I'll let this blend slip through my list of favorites as so many others before me have felt the opposite, but I won't be sad. I know that Haddo's Delight will stick around, and if something changes, then perhaps those few extra tins won't go to waste.

This blend is something of an enigma. It can be difficult to classify what type of blend Haddo's Delight is. If you think you know, I can assure you there are many others that will disagree with your assessment. That aside, I'll do my best to describe this blend from my own experience.

I would describe the taste as fruity. Not like an aromatic can be fruity, but more like how sweet Virginia's and Perique can sometimes be fruity. Except, it's much sweeter than a VaPer to me. Part of this is in the topping, I'm sure. I'm not sure what the topping is, but it is definitely present. There is a strong raisin-like and almost wine-like quality to this blend. The sweetness of the smoke lasts throughout the bowl, no-doubt supported by the presence of Cavendish in this blend.

This is a love-it or hate-it blend for most people. I honestly didn't know how I felt about it for quite some time. I smoked a 2 ounce tin and was still undecided. I smoked a second 2 ounce tin, was still undecided. Then I ordered an 8 ounce tin, and then another many months later. I came to realize that I actually really like Haddo's Delight because I'm certainly smoking a lot of it. I always have a good quantity on hand.

It smokes cool, it doesn't require many relights, and it's easy to work with. It is deceptively strong in nicotine though. If you are sensitive to nicotine, filling up a large bowl pipe might get you into trouble before you realize it. The nicotine strength isn't immediately apparent. For this reason, it is best smoked in a medium sized pipe unless you are a seasoned pipe smoker.

I recommend this tobacco, but be aware this is an odd one that is very different from most everything else. It took me a year before I accepted that I love this blend.

Haddo's Delight is a marvel and truly unique. Robust and flavorful, the dried dark fruit notes from the perique are prominent- plum, dates, and raisin. The topping is slightly more noticeable in the first 3rd, but it's masterfully applied and merely serves to accentuate the natural flavors. Where the burley adds a slightly sharp edge, adding strength and body, the virginia adds balance and light hay. The cavendish is sugary sweet and really makes the blend, and reminds me somewhat of toasted coconut. As others have noted, Haddo's Delight becomes bolder and spicier a little past the halfway mark, and this is also where it picks up strength. Smooth, full, rich, and satisfying, this blend ages wonderfully. 4 stars.

In some ways, this reminds me a bit of Chenet's Cake, with a bit more restraint. "Chenet's Lite", so to speak. The Virginias are tangy-sweet, more bright citrus than dark fruit. There's a fair amount of perique, but the real genius is the topping. It lends the fruitiness of perique without the spice and nic-hit, while the Cavendish and Burley lend body and and dark sweetness. Quite a trick, and quite a tasty tobacco. A good intro to those who want to get into heavy perique blends. Room note will be pleasing to all but dedicated tobacco-haters.

Pease Pilgrimage Reviews (a tasting journey through every GLPease blend) Tin date: May, 2010

Appearance: Mostly light- to medium-brown bits with a good amount of black chunks, presumably the Cavendish and Perique.

Tin Aroma: My first impression was of chocolate-covered cherries. Then the acidic tinge of some kind of topping, that chemically aroma that normally turns me off.

Flavor: Sometimes I taste the sea – the west coast…that cold, salty, briny air washing over the tidepools. I certainly taste the Perique, and feel it at the back of my throat although it's not nearly as strong as I had expected. The topping does affect the taste, at least for the first half of the bowl, and I don't really like it. The burley comes through much more than the tin description hints (“a little air- cured white burley ribbon…”). There seems to be enough in there to affect the flavor quite strongly, too much in fact for my taste as that ashy flavor seems to become too prominent at times.

During the second half of the bowl all the ingredients seem to meld and it becomes a much better smoke. The topping never really disappears but it becomes much less noticeable, and the richness from the Virginias and perique make for a very nice flavor. But I'm afraid it's too little too late. In every pipe, it takes a half-bowl to get to the good part, and even then it's just good, not great. Would love to try this blend exactly as it is but without the topping.

I am not an aromatic fan, and I just have to categorize this as an aromatic, at least as close as the Pease lineup gets to aromatic (after Barbary Coast that is). Can't really muster more than two stars for this one. No reason for me to buy more with all the other excellent blends out there, including many of Greg's.

Where I have chosen to live even pipe cleaners are difficult to find, and good tobaccos almost impossible. But the reviews on this site had piqued my curiosity, and I wondered if the blend would be a hate-it or love-it tobacco like Erinmore Flake or Royal Yacht. It took a major effort and considerable patience to acquire a quantity of Haddo`s Delight.

On opening the tin the aroma reminded me strongly of Momoyama and Dunbar. There was the same winey and fruity redolence which I rather like. In the pipe HD showed impeccable manners. It is easy to fill, burns sweetly and consistently without gurgle or bite. The taste is consistent with the tin aroma, and I can best describe it as Dunbar Plus.

Until now Dunbar was my preferred virginia-perique mixture. HD is a trifle more intense, and I rather think I like the extra intensity. Strongly recommended, especially to those who have enjoyed Momoyama or Dunbar.

This is one of those tobaccos that lately can do no right. So much has been written about it that new smokers seem to get upset when the face of God doesn't appear in the first puff of smoke. "Hey, I just smoked my first bowl of Haddo's and my underpants are dry as a twenty year old pouch. What a rip-off." I hear you.

Oh well.

I've been enjoying Haddo's for some time now and I find it a perfectly serviceable blend. The tobacco quality is excellent, after all. In the tin it's all butterscotchy but in the pipe it behaves like a mid-weight VaPer with a twist. It's neither impressively intense nor disappointingly bland. It's just good.

The way I see it, Haddo's doesn't have a thing to apologize for. It's the authors of all those hyperbolic 4-star reviews who should be held accountable. Haha.

My first slight disappointment with Greg's tobaccos, and many other smokers' favorite (so I'll shock someone here). The smell of the unburnt tobacco is nice: if you let the tin open for a while, you can get some chocolatey notes under the sharp perique notes and the alcoholic topping (the intensity of which seems to vary slightly according to the tin: as a matter of fact, Greg has confessed that an ingredient of the top secret processing to produce this tobacco is rum!). When smoking, however, the rum is almost not perceivable: the taste is of a typical Virginia/Perique blend. The burley and cavendish contribution explicit themselves in a very subtle way, almost ghost-like. What puzzles me about the rave reviews of Haddo's is that I can't seem to get much taste out of it... I am not a fan of Va/perique mixtures, but some of them are really good and I love them a lot. This one, instead, has a blander taste which I find a bit lacking in the sweet notes department. Certainly this is too subtle a tobacco for my unsophisticated taste, but I prefer sweeter and simpler blends. It doesn't bite too much, but I find it to be rather strong nicotine-wise and gives me headaches: if you want a earthy and complex virginia/perique blend rich in citrusy sour notes, full with perique and with a toasty quality that reminds a bit of Tribute (which I like better), this might be a great choice for you anyway.

2012 Update: I raised my rating for this blend... The trick was simple: let it age A LOT. My current tin is 7 years old, and it has developed a wonderful complexity, a rich sweetness and a earthy/dried fruit aroma which makes for a memorable smoking experience. The Perique has become less evident, and it is much better integrated. A much more flavorful smoke than from fresh tins! If I have to be nitpicking, it STILL is a bit astringent/drying on the back of the palate (makes me thirsty, and I have to smoke it slowly and occasionally, otherwise I end up with a sore throat), but it is delicious. Like Barbary Coast's bigger and more flamboyant brother. Good stuff.

A friend of mine recommended that I try Haddo's about a year ago. Here we are and I am working on tin # 2. As noted in the thirty-plus other reviews, this one is for the perique lover. I enjoy perique in an understated sort of way; however, Haddo's is too much for me. I do like the kick this leaf has, but I feel that it is too heavy handed. Perhaps it would benefit from some time in the cellar, but as it stands I can't put it in the rotation. NB-I find the room note much more appealing than the tobacco itself. September/04-Of the original 4 tins I purchased in 2002, I smoked 2, traded one and gave the last one to a friend who passed it over to the local pipe club. Last time I attended, it was still there, 2/3 full and not very popular. Doesn't ring my bell, nor those of the pipers I encounter. Enthusiastically overrated.

I have to go with hornsmoker on this review, Haddo's is the most overhyped VA blend in existance. I don't know that I can even call it a VA blend now that I think of it. There is a lot of Cavendish in this blend, along with Perique. I'm not a Cavendish fan...what can I say? I think many of Greg's blends are wonderful, but this one didn't do it for me. I'm anxiously awaiting his TRUE Virginia/Perique blend coming out this summer (2003). As for those of you who like the fig smell, get a fruitcake! ;-)

The is a mixture ranging the full spectrum of brown comprised of short ribbon cuts, rubbed out Va. flake, dark brown pieces of black cavendish and bits of Perique. The aroma is as the manufacturer describes. I detect a cocoa or even a chocolatey essence, fermented apples and a faint figginess and the esters of some sort of exotic liquor. The blend is not too moist, but it is a tad fluffy to pack. I was aware that I should give the ribbon a firm pack, but was concerned about the chunks of Va. and cavendish plugging up the works. It took two charring lights and tamps and a finishing light and it was on its way. The initial taste sensation is of unsweetened black cavendish ala Cornell & Diehl Blockade Runner which I, on rare occasions, smoke straight and which can be relentlessly astringent. Almost immediately it settles down to reveal the sweetness of the Virginias riding lightly atop the black cavendish. And then the Perique emerges, but very judiciously. To my taste the black cavendish dominates with the Virginia and Perique offering subtlety, sweetness and nuance. I sense that the burley must be there to provide body to the blend, but I cannot taste burley. This a smooth smoke with not even a hint of a bite. The flavor is very full so that I want to take the smoke in small sips. I am aware of an expert blender putting this mixture together. All the elements are in harmony. There are no artificial flavors just a fabulous unsweetened black cavendish, lightly sweet Virginia and the spicey playfulness of Perique. This is my first GLP blend and what a great start! This is an incredible tobacco. There is not much I can say about this one other than I love it. A little dificult to get started but stayed lit for a while. First puff was sweet and soothing. After half the bowl, the thick and beautiful white smoke filled the room with a most pleasant aroma.

Everything about this blend is quality, right down to it appearance in the tin.

I can't wait for the second and third bowls of this stuff. Not to mention the rest of the blends.

Top notch tobacco.

Haddo's Delight by the estimable Greg Pease has become my standard everyday smoke for the past few months. The incredible complexity allows is to be smoked on so many different levels making it the perfect blend for any time and any occasion. I smoke more Haddo's Delight than everything else combined.

A generous portion of long-cut Perique gives the base of air cured light ribbon and dark fermented Virginias a spicy sweetness without the bitterness that sometimes results from heavy use of Perique.

The full richness of the Virginias combined with sweet, spicy and earthy tones from the Perique makes for a splendid mixture indeed. Balanced by small amounts of unsweetened Black Cavendish and a small dose of Burley, I simply can't imagine a better put together blend. There is a small top-note of some variety, which, though not adding sweetness, does seem to tie the whole thing together.

This tobacco is perhaps the most incredibly complex tobacco that I have ever had the honor to taste. Every bowl gets better; the first few bowls seem superficially unremarkable, however I pick up new nuance every time I smoke this exceptional blend. It is like a good book that requires multiple readings to divine the hidden and complex meaning.

One moment it seems like figs dominate and the next a nose tingling spiciness from the perique seems almost to overwhelm the blend. During one bowl the flavors act together in harmony and in the next the cacaphony of flavors seem to compete for the smoker's attentions. Furthermore, when one doesn't have the time to offer it the full attention it deserves, it still provides a remarkably rewarding smoke. Even the superficial flavors detected when not devoting full attention-- slight sweetness and spiciness-- are still fantastic.

If I could smoke only one blend, Haddo's Delight would be it. This is the blend against which I consider all others. A superlative effort from perhaps the foremost tobacco blender in the world.

While being a new pipe smoker, I've had two very different amazing smokes with Haddo's. Back in February, when the tin was recently opened, I was finding the smoke to interesting but a bit harsh. I tend to chooch along to fast. At one point though, I changed pipes and what call the red virginias just came through. It was really my first experience with that. It's likely that I am confusing the flavor of the red virginias and the flavor of the perique, but either way a rich fruity flavor came through. You do have to let the perique settle down a bit. The flavor is the same as what I get after Kajun Kake settles down. Haddo's is much more complex though with the cavendish and rum topping. At the time, I didn't get much of the rum.

Today, I went back to Haddo's after about 8 months. This time in an MM Legend and wow.... The virginias and perique came back but I could now pick up hints of the rum, very nicely done, and the cavendish gave bursts of a full, round mouth feel. Overall, a very complex, fun tobacco. After 8 months too, I learned to sip and that helped a lot.

Please try this, be patient, try different pipes but just spend time with this. Let the rough edges burn off in the first 1/4 of the bowl and then sit back.

Prep: Perfect moisture level

First impression: Grassy and dark fruity Virginias, accentuated by the Perique. The fruit notes is on top. The Perique is right in 2nd place, quite strong. The burley’s nutty/molasses presence is quite evident.

The nicotine level is high enough where one bowl is enough for me, though granted, I'm not a heavyweight with good ol' Vit-N. I’m kinda glad this blend isn’t high on my list, as I feel I highly rate every Pease blend. The white burley is what I believe turns me off about this blend. It does call to mind Druquer and Son’s “Princes Blend” which is a Pease blend as well. They both have an exact flavor profile that I don’t like (Prince blend has latakia). And the only thing I can come up with is that they both have a white, light burley in enough quantity. It is either that itself or in combination with the Perique. I have smoked pure dark burley and I don’t get that taste. 5/10

I tested about 40 blends of pipe tobacco in my piping life and i never really disliked any that i tried. This one might be an exception , not because of the heavy perique content but...that smell . I can't get over it , to me it smell really like foul rotten chocolate soaked in cheap liquor . Plus the tobacco was way too much dry , i gave the tin to one of my friend i hope he's gonna enjoy it like many seem to enjoy here . Not for me , Cheers !

One of the best mixed flavor of Virginia. Straight Virginia would be something like Red Ribbon, not around now. But this is Virginia with a punch. No harshness from the perique, just an added flavor. Not like Escudo but what I call a mixed Virginia. Liked it so much I ordered two 8 ounce cans to age, at my age (71) can’t let it age too long.

Spice and raisins. The tin aroma is right up front. The perique is very present. A mixture better suited for outdoors, since the smoke of the perique can cause additional itchiness for the sensitive smoker. The raisins flavoring is persistent through the whole bowl. It is a nice mixture to have around for a change of pace. I prefer it in the evening with tea.

I lack the sensory and tobacco vocabulary of JimLinks, and I often read his very accurate reviews. I tried a tin of this a couple of years ago and could plainly see that it was very different. Different than the McClelland & Dunhill blends I preferred. But I recently purchased a couple more tins and am quite liking this now. So much so that I bought a one-pound tin just yesterday. I am going to see if I can lay off the other 2-ounce tin until it gets some age before opening the one pounder. That is unless the one pound tin by some miracle already has a lot of age on it. My thinking is that not too many people smoke this blend and maybe, just maybe that one pound tin has a couple three years on it already. I hope. I hope. I hope. Because I have heard this one ages nicely.

The only drawback from this shag/ ribbon cut blend is that it burns quite quickly, so you'll want to use a large pipe. But if you are a skilled pipe smoker and can find driving this one easy, you'll be rewarded and enjoy a delightful concert of changing flavors by letting it burn slowly and sipping.

First I must state that this review is for a 3 years old age tin. Therefore, all conclusions are for this specific aged haddo. Here we go. The tin note is wonderful, very sweet and a little sour and makes you dream how it will gonna smell once burnt. Which is also pleasant. I was surprised by how easily this blend fires up and stays lit, which is nice. The taste is pretty sweet to me but never overpowering. And the good news is that as the smoke progresses, the taste is quite consistent. Rum flavoring to the mix. Nicotine level is enough to satisfy you. I am not a big fan of aromatics because I believe that the majority of them don't taste as they smell.But, this one was different. For me, it is the best aromatic ( and yes I consider it an aromatic) I had the pleasure to try so far.

I recently discovered a tin that I had stored in a freezer bag inside an airtight ammunition container dated 05/06/09 that is still fresh & moist. This tin is nearly full. Imagine my "delight." It has an aroma of vinegar that is very dominant & the cocoa flavoring is still noticeable as well. I'm letting it air out occasionally but still, after ten years of aging that strong vinegar aroma will not yield... if that's what it is. Yes... it was almost good but nothing special.

Perique & whatever else was too abundant in this mixture & the flavor of any spirits other than vinegar had become unoticeable. There is so much Perique & I guess that, combined with the Rum flavoring fried my palate & pretty much worked my tongue over as well... chemical burn, as it were, which was So bad I even type with a lisp. I couldn't handle it back then & can't today. This tobacco finally started easing up on my palate only during the fourth quarter... too late! Who was Haddo anyway? He might have been a "Rum Runner" who chewed & spit St. James Perique.

Rather than condemn or recommend Haddo's Delight, try it for yourself if you feel like this may be a blend that pleases your palate. It was rough on mine even after aging for 10 years... didn't improve or seem to make any significant change in flavor & may have even become more objectionable. Not for this piper ever again. G. L. Pease can keep all these types of blends. FWIW, I also thought Westminster was another loser... both ended up in the trash. However, I find G. L. Pease's blends for Drucquer & Sons exceptional possessing that old timey flavor. My thoughts only but we're all different in DNA with varying taste receptors & many might find this "exceptional?"

Haddo's delight has a very pleasant fruity aroma direct from the tin. The tobacco is ribbon cut, making it very easy to pack a bowl. With the rum topping I do not recommend drying the tobacco before packing either.

The strength doesn't change throughout the bowl and flavors remain pretty consistent as well. The rum topping provides a nice sweetness that mellows out the strength of the tobacco. There's some grassiness, as well as earth, stewed fruit, and a touch of spice.

I would not smoke this as the first bowl of the day due to the medium strength, but it definitely holds up well to be smoked throughout the rest of the day. Haddo's smokes very well and required hardly any relights.

In pursuing my continued interest and expansion with Virginias, in all their possible combinations, I find Haddo's very satisfying. The flavoring, whether or not one exists, lends interest and a diverse dimension of aromas. There may be no flavoring as the tin indicates, but the tobacco combinations give that sort of enhancement. Maybe it's the Perique or the Cavendish or both; who knows.

Many times I"ll smoke SG FVF wanting just a little more aroma than strength. This one delivers. Medium strength, no bite, light on the palate, and with a sublime delivery to the olfactory senses. I generally gravitate to flakes, not ribbon cut tobaccos. But while this is a medium cut ribbon, it lasts a good while and smokes just right.

Smoking excellence. This is a fantastic blend. Plenty of strength and a myriad of flavors. The sensations I get while exhaling out the nose is wonderful. There is lots of spiciness and pepper "stinginess" that I truly love. I absolutely adore Vapers and this one with the added cavandish and burley give it just the added dimensions that make it even that more better. This one is a delicious alternative to pure Virginia/Perique blends.

I must say, that I am glad that I did not write my review of this blend before giving this blend several chances and reading many reviews here on this site. When I first received the tin I was pretty much disappointed, and for a couple of reasons. One, because I saw how many people gave this blend 4 star reviews and I was (at the time) giving it one, maybe two stars- at best. So, I was upset that I bought this and it turned out not to be what I expected. And secondly, I was disappointed that I was not tasting the complexities and nuances, that so many others are tasting in the blend. On the advice of a couple of fellow reviewers here, I used a larger bowl and allowed the blend to only dry out for 10 mins. I also sipped this blend as recommended. I must tell you this made all the difference in the world. As I sit here and type this, I have a large Peterson (Shannon series) filled with this delightful blend (pun intended)! And, it really does bring out the true flavors that I have been patiently waiting to taste. The figs, the raisins, I also get warm bread... a brioche perhaps?, I get hints of sweetness from the rum that fades in and out as well. This really turned into a wonderful tasting smoke, and that is what makes this site great. Had I not read the reviews and exercised patience, I may not have discovered Haddos delight in all her glory. The VAs and the black cavendish add a nice even but subtle sweetness and the perique, although not as peppery as I have had in the past, is consistently present in the background throughout the smoke. The burley is where I am most likely getting the warm bread and nuttiness from and that is noticeable from start to finish. This blend certainly has a uniqueness to it, all it's own. Patience (in more ways than one), a larger bowl, and a slower smoking cadence allowed me to reap the attributes of this delicious blend. This has gone to the top of my tobacco rotation and will stay until finished. This is a smooth blend, that I could easily smoke a few times a day. It is by no means overbearing and leaves a pleasant aftertaste. 3 and 1/2 Stars.

I tried this for the rum, which I really enjoy on tobacco. However the perique crowds it out on this one, giving me the taste of dirt. I don't like the taste of dirt, and this tobacco has it in spades. Pun not intended. It is like shovelling dirt into one's mouth. Not recommended unless you enjoy that flavor profile. It does not smell nice either.

Haddo's Delight is a sweet, caleidoscopic, spicy blend. The Louisiana Perique is abundant, generous with beautiful taste of dried fruits. Liquorous aroma is intense but noble. Satisfaction is great. I consider it a meditation tobacco, esoteric in a sense.

Yo-ho, this was an interesting smoke, to say the least. Great "stewed" aroma upon opening the tin. I needed to dry out the tobacco a bit before lighting, but once I got started it was a taste extravaganza. If I smoked this stuff too fast, it got to me, and upset my stomach. Fast puffers beware....this may not allow you to stoke the fire as much as you like....that is, unless you WANT to see little green men in spacesuits. It's strong...at least for me, and I will not smoke it regularly, BUT I will always have some stored away somewhere for that special occasion

I don't know who Haddo was, but if he found delight in this he was probably a man to stand aside from.

Description has it a Va/Per, but it's much closer to a Per/Va; the Perique is absolutely overwhelming. To be fair, they're upfront about it on the tin, "for the Perique lover." Take that seriously. If you're sensitive to Perique or just don't like it, you aren't going to like Haddo's.

You get some sweet breadiness from the Virginias, but the Perique is front and center with a pleasant plum taste, but also a huge dose of pepperiness. The taste is pleasant and full, but there's just too much Perique for me (is there such a thing as a Perique bomb?). Nicotine strength is on the strong side of medium, though if you have low tolerance you'll probably find Haddo's firmly in the strong ranking.

My unbiased rating for Haddo's is 3, maybe 3.5 stars. It's a quality blend. But for my personal taste, 1 star or less.

Opened this tin tonight after a year. Upon smelling its contents I wondered what I got myself into - thought it smelled overpowering and nasty. But, I didn't give up on it and couldn't resist smelling the open tin over and over. My initial thoughts completely changed. The more I smelled it, the better it got and the more I appreciated this unique blend. I was now curious on what experience was to come. I must say, upon lighting my pipe I again didn't know how to process the experience. This blend is totally different from any I've had before. Then as I was putting down a healthy bowl, this blend was like a roller coaster of experiences - the brandy, to a slight sweetness, to almost a cigar effect at one point. I didn't know where the hell I was on my pipe smoking adventure. Very intriguing and quite cool as I tried to figure this one out. This blend is truly unique and worth the experience alone. I am sure the more seasoned pipers know or can figure out where this one is going. I look forward to revisiting it again another day to do so myself. This isn't an every day smoke for me. And, it's quite strong and put me on my heels a bit. Truly a unique blend with some varyng qualities. Challenging! Hats off for such an unusual blend. Everyone should experience a tin of this at least once.

Wonderful stuff! from the tin I got an explosion of so many good flavors in which the dominant one is the brandy liquor, while smoking it, the taste and smell are like smoking an aromatic, but good aromatic with high nicotine dose, I would highly recommend this blend to those looking for a good quality aromatic tobacco.

Haddo's is a milder version of tobacco remake. I cellar this and the longer it sits the better it gets. My oldest tastes the best. The newest just smells. I smoke this in mer. Lined pipes it saves the harsh after smell and pipe re sweetening that seems to come from this blend. It needs to dry and breath for a good smoke. I keep it out for at least 4 hours. It ruined one of my clay pipes so I have two peterson pipes just for this. This chars fast and gives off a very strong room note. Everyone will know what you have. I have brought it to my pipe club and it had very mixed reviews. It smokes steady and a little hot. Adding some extra Virgina will tone this down. Use extra pipe cleaners here. It leaves black soup in the pipe. Taste really does not hit until 10 minutes in. In all I hope in five years this really comes into its own.

Haddo's Delight is an interesting blend. It has that sour-sweet aroma of the plum and brandy in the tin, could be overwhelming sometimes. On the other hand it's stronger than it smells. I didn't believe it would be strong enough until I try. I was wrong, Haddo punched me bad.

It's spicy as if i'm chewing a handful of dry clove buds. I don't say it's bad, just not my treat. Maybe I can't get along with Perique, I don't know.

I would like to try it again, in some distant future. Then maybe I can criticize it more objectively.

Haddo was just a little too out of balance for me. Yup, the perique was just over powering, simply put. I love perique, but it has to be done correctly, or maybe its me. Whatever the case may be I can whole heartedly recommend this to the perique freaks out there. Otherwise exercise caution :) BTW, this lit well, behaved in the bowl and yielded a moderate amount of smoke, so the basics are there and that's a good thing!! PJ

There’s a new bricks and mortar tobacconist in town and it carries a nice collection of tinned tobacco, or at least, its purveyor had sense enough not to mimic its competition. Anyhow it carries a reasonable selection of G.L. Pease tobaccos. So I gave Haddo’s Delight a whirl. I fancy most of its component tobaccos and its noted strength piqued my interest too. Is it a VaPer or not? For me it’s more than a VaPer, and yet I can’t effectively describe it.

Now I’m no tobacconist or blender but I’ve smoked long enough to recognize certain traits of a blend, so I don’t suggest that I’m the equivalent of an oenophile of tobacco. It’s my opinion that Mr. Pease went whole hog on casing and topping the tobaccos, yet with great finesse and forethought. Everything just clicks in this creation. For example, I can’t say exactly what the unflavored Black Cavendish does for this blend, but it is a mighty fine smoke. In fact, I’ve been smoking this tobacco at anytime time of the day, it’s that versatile. The tin note has a scent of some spirit, say a fruit brandy. I presently have a sweetness remaining on my palate that I recognize as being influenced by the Perique, from my lunch smoke. With some VaPers I can get bored with the flavor by the sharp Virginian brightness and flimsy strength, but not Haddo. Maybe the Burley has some play there- Pease knows. By summer’s heat I can’t smoke English or Oriental blends, yet I still favor fullness of a smoke just minus the Latakia and Orientals. Did I tell you the stuff just smokes effortlessly? I’m quite tolerant of nicotine, so I don’t find it head jarring. This blend seems like it could have been in production for a hundred years, so keenly blended it has appeal to so many folks and maybe even generations.

This review is based on smoking two 50g tins of this tobacco. One fresh and one aged for a year.

The tin aroma is fruity and boozy. A straight-forward smoke (unlike other GLP blends), but with a very noticeable nicotine content. There is a consistent "spicy" flavor, which may be from the Perique or from the strength of the blend.

I really liked this blend fresh, and was excited to return to it after aging it for a year. My expectations were sky high, and this fell a little short. However, this is an excellent and unique blend that I will continue to cellar and experience as it ages.

I have been sampling a tin of Haddos for the last 3 years. It rests in a mason jar currently.

First sample with no age was very young tobacco , which i think is representative of a lot of C&D produced blends. Strong tin note - fruit and grand marnier. Perique blast but other tobaccos are all mis matched so I let age.

After sampling over the last few years i can say the age improves Haddos.

But for me this bend consistently fades out after the mid bowl point where the taste becomes bland , flat and a little bitter.

I give two stars for the first half of the bowl and for the unique flavor it provides ( maybe a mix between Royal Yacht and Stonehaven? )

I would describe this blend as thin and sharp. I tried it in multiple pipes and at different moisture levels. No matter what I did this blend always bit my tongue. I'll try aging the remainder of the tin and revisit at a later date.

There's mot much Delightful about this. Strong nic, not much flavor or interesting aroma, but at least some perique spiciness. Reminds me of cigarettes...if you like 'em, you'll like this.

I read a lot of reviews about this Blend, so I finally bought a tin of it. When I opened the Tin....The first thing I noticed was the tobacco was very dry. Not happy! Anyways, I loaded it into a brand new unsmoked Radice pipe I was saving for the occasion. As I lit the pipe, I got nothing. Hmmm?? So I tamped it a bit and lit it again. Still nothing....Just like air! Well...I smoked the bowl down past the half way mark with little change so I dumped it out and that was that. Very disappointed with this Blend. Unless I got a bad tin? I will try and hydrate it a little and give it another shot but as it is now....It's tasteless.

This is a nice blend as a change of pace. The topping is whiskey/rum , I believe, and it is done well. It gives the blend a nice scent and a sour fruity flavor along with the Perique. I really can't believe this doesn't contain Latakia, because to me , it is smokey. The burley stays in the background.

Just a quick comparison of Pease Blends: Haddo's Delight- whiskey topped , light smokey flavor, fruity (2), Chelsea Morning- Light latakia, fruity (4), Meridian- Medium Latakia, creamy bacon Oriental flavor (4), Lagonda-Medium Latakia- Campfire flavor, light Oriental (2), Quite Nights- Heavy Latakia- Campfire flavor with Creamy Orientals (4), Odyssey- Heavy Latakia- Campfire flavor dominates , light orientals(3), I would say all of these are 3 & 4 star blends, the numbers (#'s)after the blend indicate my personal preferences when compared to "only" these 6 blends

Should be called Haddo's Nicotine Punch in the Face. I enjoyed smoking it, but I can't finish a bowl before the room is spinning. While I'm not a tough guy when it comes to nicotice, I'm not a wimp either, and what makes this blend so insidious is that it sneaks up on you. One minute I'm enjoying (in all fairness) a tasty smoke, the next I'm lying on a bed for two hours sweating in a 65-degree house. You have been warned.

This blend makes me feel like the last kid picked in dodge ball. I can taste the flavors, and I can absolutely understand how some people would find this taste to be nirvana, but I am just not sure it is for me. I feel like I am the uninvited nerd to the Haddo's Delight party.

When it comes to quality it is a well known fact that Mr. Pease produces some of the finest product to ever grace the briar. If Mr. Pease released a blend called Pigeon Crap I would buy a couple tins to cellar, just because I know if he makes it, quality it will be.

This blend is very good, but it just does not stun me like others. I can tell why others love it, but it just is not for me. There is a definite dark, raisin, dried fruit, spice cake type of flavor here, and a meerschaum really brings out the nuances.

Give it a shot, for you it may be utopia in a bowl. I will stick to my other Pease Favorites.

The tin note on this comes across like Peach Schnapps, which, for me, is quite a turn off. Maybe Peach Schnapps isn't quite on the mark, but it does have an unmistakable alcohol aroma which I find very unnatural. For this reason alone I cannot recommend this blend.

The smoke itself is fine. It smokes evenly and I get good smoke output.

I think there are far better Vapers out there. My personal first choice would be the more natural aromas and flavors of Esoterica's Dunbar which seems to be a little easier to come by than some of Esoterica's other blends.

Well....sadly...Boring. I was disappointed with this one. I'll put it in the cellar and try again after it ages.

UPDATE 11/19: Wow, what a change with a little age. I Smoked several more bowls over the last week and really enjoyed them. This is how I like my VaPers, with a bit of perique but the main flavor is the virginia. I fully agree with DK (see below). He gives the best review of this blend. Bowl size matters on this one. The nic hit can be a whammy.

whew! a bit strong on the cavendish and rum or brandy.. but otherwise a quality va/per.. and the first pease blend i actually sort of like.. recommended but it is more for someone who likes a strange cavendish heavy va/per.

Not my suit. I simply could not get along with the annoying, pervasive, brandy-flavored casing which blatantly does not go well, if at all, with the dominant, slightly harsh perique in this "blend". I am just not finding the "exquisite harmony and balance" others are extoling the virtues of in the majority of these Pease "blends". Every tin is a roll of the dice, leaving me a disappointed and disgruntled guinea pig. Bleh!

My experience is from a one year old, 2oz can...and I am baffled by the majority of experiences here.

The aroma/flavor is certainly not from Perique alone. A definite brandy flavoring is applied, most likely a casing, since my sample was soaked in this contemptible sauce. Drying and then re-hydrating the content tobacco did not abate the vile taste from this mixture. In my opinion, a waste of fine leaf...and I cannot fathom how anyone would enjoy this excrement in a pipe. I disbelieve that any significant amount of additional cellaring time will have any positive affect on this dung (and, regrettably, I have three more cans...heavy sigh).

I can only hope that I experienced a somewhat singular exception, and not the true evilly-sour feces-forward representation of this blend. I will, perhaps, try it again in a few more years...the memory of this blend needs to fade.

A companion infusion: mouthwash...a massive dose of mouthwash.

Haddo's, much like Barbary Coast is a blend that I really wanted to like. Fantastic aroma from the tin, regardless of what others have said there simply must be some sort of alcoholic beverage infusion here. That aroma can not be achieved from Perique alone. But unlike B.C. I have found a way to thoroughly enjoy Haddo's Delight. Unlike B.C., Haddo's takes to the match very nicely but my first few bowls were harsh and hot. I tried a Radice twin bore pipe, and still harsh and hot, but far from veil as one of our brothers has noted. Then I pulled out an old Peterson churchwarden and ah ya, I mean oooo ya, thats the ticket! It all came together, the sweet, the spicy, the pungent flavors, cocoa, figs, raisins, it all came together just as advertised. The harshness turned into fullness and the heat turned into flavor. Thanks to the Churchwarden.

It's hard to hate this stuff. When I first tried it in a meerschaum, I could've sworn to you that it had a brandy topping. However, I usually hate flavoured tobaccos, so I knew something was up. Asked my tobacconist, and he told me that it was the generous helping of perique that transformed the flavour. Ever since, I've liked it. The way that G.L. Pease can create such a rich flavoured blend without adding any junk is admirable, whether you like the flavour or not.

Now, how it smokes. First light always tastes funny, so give it a minute. The brandy notes start to come through and you have a rich warm tasting tobacco. Halfway down, the perique starts to seperate from the virginia a bit and create a spicy taste like Stratford, G.L. Pease's other vaper. Depending on how you pinch it out, the bottom of the bowl can either taste spicy or have a rich chocolate-coffee taste. If you want spicy, put some more strands of the darker coloured tobacco in the bottom? that's the perique. If you're like me and you like to have it fade into an aged virginia taste with coffee notes, pinch a bit more of the lighter coloured tobacco in the bottom. Smokes to a whitish grey ash. A great blend all around.

The blend stars off peppery but quickly settles down into a smooth taste. It retains the pepper overtone throughout the bowl but the stewed fruit flavors normally associated with the perique build towards mid bowl.

I can't say I'm thrilled with the way my clothes and surroundings smell after a smoke but it tastes very good.

The blend might not be my favorite but it is very solid and as another review mentioned "serviceable". The tobacco leaves a fine salt and pepper ash. Also burns pretty cool. No bite here- but I have never found bite in any Pease blend.

I will use this mainly for a change of pace blend. I normally go for the G.L. Pease Caravan (which can not be praised enough), but this is a nice way to mix it up. With some age this might become a 4 star.

If you like or love perique give this a try,

Good stuff, but then again I have not tried one of Greg's blends that was not at least a 3 star.

After a lot of encouragement I finally tried Haddo's. The blend turned out to be a positive experience. Love the perique, love the viginina, but there is a complexity to this smoke that just makes it enjoyable all the way down the bowl. It may also be that touch of Cavendish that adds the burley tingle to it.

I doesn't light as easily as some blends, but once lit it burns nice and clean. Recommended in the medium to larger bowls; it doesn't seem to develop if packed tightly into a small bowl. Now I don't smoke it regularly as it fuller flavored than I like so I experimented and found that 1/2 Haddo's and 1/2 Cumberland make for a really great smoke not as full as Haddo's and more interesting than plain Cumberland. The topping/casing is the same so it blends perfectly.

I have enjoyed it in Danish, English and meerschaum bowls with good success.

Most of my pipes reak of haddo's , most of my cellar is filled with haddo's , most of my thoughts are about when I can smoke more haddo's and when I am smoking haddo's I am wondering if there is haddo's in the afterlife?

I've tried tins of this twice?over a couple of years. It's the kind of blend I normally like, but it's been a basically unpleasant acquaintance. The problem, as has been noted by a couple of reviewers here, is that there is just too much Perique in Haddo's for me and despite its pleasant aroma, it is unbalanced and harsh on the throat.

This is harsh, strong stuff.

The tin I have was more than a year old when I opened it, so being "too fresh" doesn't explain it. This tobacco is harsh on the back of the throat, bites the tongue, and is too strong for my taste.

If you bought tobacco solely on tin aroma, HD would get four stars. But the flavor of the smoke on the tongue is actually very mild.

I may explore Barbary Coast and Grey Havens, which appear to be less potent cousins to this tobacco.

Haddo must delight in heartburn and nausea. GLPease has some really great blends, and this isn't one of them. The earthy, dried fruit tin aroma is admittedly intriguing. I've aged this several months and given it several honest attempts, but it honestly sickens me. Buy one tin at a time if you choose to give it a go.

'My Great Grandmother had the vapers' -that kills me!

Ahem, This is one for the cellar. This will age very well, but, unfortunately I buy tobacco to smoke, not to invest. And this is an investment; for this kind of cash layout I expected much more.

But, I digress. There's not as much perique in here as some of the reviews below had me believe. The burley is top notch, adding lots of body and nuts. The unflavored green river black cavendish is, well, there too. I would miss it if it wasn't. But, the Virginias! Aye. I smoke lots of (mostly) virginias in various forms and this is probably the worst case of -releasing tobacco before it's time- that I've ever experienced. But what do I know? (yeah, not much).

My tin had a year of age on it when opened, and the VA element hadn't had a voice change yet. Tin stench (as my father called it--ha!) was wonderful, just like the light up, but, soon after it went rough. Bitter, even. I really gave this a chance. I've been through 8 oz.s over six months- a record in slowness for me, the constant smoker. Haddo's harshness improved with time and a little air circulation-moisture had no effect, thus the age=goodness conclusion.

I get paid for what I do, not what I'm going to do. (Most of the time;-) Call me practical, but I expect the same from my smokes. (This blend's got great potential, though).

p.s. If you love Haddo's, but not the burley in it, try Two Friends' Redwood.

Whew! I'm tired.

This is truly a unique smoking experience. The best Virginia/Perique blend on the market. A wonderful blend of colors greets you upon opening the tin and the aroma is fantastic. Lots of raisin and stewed fruit flavor with a hint of cocoa and maybe a mild rum scent. I know Haddo's doesn't have a rum topping but the aroma is sure there. It packs best in medium to large bowls. I have been smoking this daily for the last month in everything from group 4 Dunhills to a G sized Becker to a Savinelli Autograph 5 with a 3" deep and an inch and a quarter wide tobacco chamber. This blend has smoked terrific in all of them. The flavor starts out light and sweet and gets progressively deeper and stronger down the bowl. Mid-way through the smoke the flavor really intensifies with the strongest Perique flavor kicking in at the last third of the bowl. The Virginia leaf is always present, wafting in and out with a superb sweetness. The Black Cavendish and Air-cured Leaf really smooth out the blend. I prefer to smoke this in the afternoon or evening with a nice cup of coffee or tea, but it could also be an all day smoke for the Perique lovers out there. It is that smooth and flavorful. It leaves the bowl dry all the way down and all that is left is a fine gray ash. No matter what sized bowl you smoke this in the end always comes too soon. Another grand slam from Greg Pease.

I'm a big fan of Va and perique blends.Three Nun's,State Express "roundels" and Solani's Va flake w/perique are three of my favorite all time tobaccos."Haddo's" will NOT be added to the list!I found this blend absolutely dull.The depth of flavor is completely absent unlike the blends I mentioned above.It irritates the hell outta the back of my throat and dries out my mouth!I've been hearing folks brag about this blend for years,for me anyway it was a rare dissapointment in the great line of GLP's tinned tobaccos.... Pass this one on by! prep

As the saying goes, "You can please some of the people all the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time." It seems Mr. Pease has pleased most of the reviewers here but not all. I will dissent. With all of the euphoria about this blend, my expectations were high when I first tried it six months ago and again this past week. I wasn?t impressed either time and likened this experience to rave movie reviews given by friends only to be disappointed when I saw the movie that left me wondering what they saw in the movie that I didn?t. What I didn?t find in this tobacco is a taste I liked. I also found it pretty much one-dimensional. I did find too much strength, nicotine and perique that didn?t sit well with me. You can?t please all of the people all of the time and that is why blenders offer myriad blends to choose from and try. Finding the blend(s) you like is the adventure.

A cigarette is to be smoked. A cigar is to be enjoyed. A pipe is to be savored.

I rate this tobacco 5.5 out of 10.

What the heck is all the hooplah about the G.L. Pease blends? And what is it about this G.L Pease calling himself the dark one? What is he, a Satanist? Haddo's is a welder,with a perique torch that burns the back of my throat and tongue.If you like perique, you might like this. IMO it's too expensive for what it tastes like. The tobaccos just do not seem to get along well the way it's blended. But if you like it smoke it. Too much Perique,poor Virginia grade,and use of unflavoured Green river leaf which has a high nicotene content and can be harsh. I tried to like this but cannot. I also got the Haddo headache somebody eles talked about.

Pleasant and mild at the beginning, with a bit of the nose tickles associated with Perique. A bit hard to get lit, may have something to do with the cut. Once lit, however, it provides a nice cool smoke without the bite that I normally associate with Perique blends. I am sure that the cavendish has something to do with mellowing it out a bit. It does gain some strength in the last third of the bowl, but not enough to be unpleasant. Burned clean all the way to the bottom ,and gave up without a fight, burning completely away to a dark grey ash. A couple of mothns worth of age really makes this blend shine. The Burley is more prominent, which is something I like, but the spiciness is still there. I hardily recommend cellaring large quantities of this, to while away the summer months with in years to come.

I am not sure what it is with this blend, but several individuals at my local tobacconist (and I) experience an artifact of smoking Haddo's Delight that we have termed the "Haddo's Headache". A rather unpleasant experience that is not really nauseating so much as a feeling that a nail is being driven into one's temple. That is, I believe such an analogy applies, though admittedly I have never had a nail driven into my being.

For those of you familiar with the poor construction worker, who a month or two ago, fell from a rooftop with a nail gun in hand, and not only suffered the fall, but about a half-dozen nails driven into his skull at chaotic angles (I believe he is miraculously doing OK) - the X-ray pictures (I am sure that they can be found on the Internet), seem to present the best imagery of my senses smoking HD. This tobacco turns my pipe into a nail gun, and HD is the nails. Each puff brings me closer to the edge of the abyss.

Haddos Delight is a blend that many people love and some dislike. I love it! This is one of my favorite blends. I do not say this lightly or in gest as I have tried many blends and genres of pipe tobacco. To those who have not tried this blend give it a try but be sure not to smoke on an empty stomache as the nicotine content is high and may overwhelm some. This is a very complex blend and should be smoked in a clean pipe and with a clean palate to appreciate the subtle textures and over tones that arise through the bowl. The flavor is complex and ranges from earthy-nutty to figs and raisens. I do not mean in an unatural way but in a way that good virginia and perique can bring. Some people think the perique content in this blend is to strong but I like it and think its combination with the virginias and unflavored cavendish is done very well. I never get bored of this smoke as it delicately shifts in its flavors and sometimes surprises me with overtones I was not expecting. If you do not like perique or like it in very small quantities you may not like this blend. I find this blend exceptional and save it for my favorite Walt Cannoy pipe!

I believe that Greg Pease knows quite a bit about tobacco and its burning and smoking properties. Further, I think that he has acquired a great market based on the number of reviewers and obvious fans of his blends. But for me, I?ve tasted nothing so far (this based on four samples of 4 different blends with about three bowls of each, thus totaling my wasted smoking experiences to a dirty dozen) that has gotten even the slightest amount of interest or noticeable taste! Yes, this blend has VA and P, I can?t taste the VA, but can tell that the P is there based on the amount of buzz I get from it. I can say this for this blend ? It?s fairly strong and it burns very clean. Flavor/Taste: NONE; Interest: NONE; Plan on buying this ever, ever, ever again: NOPE.

Heres a novelty a va/perique mixture when every one else does it in a flake. I quite liked the spicey edge to this blend and an edge is what this one has, it can get a bit to spicey if you over puff. But this blends most memorable feature is that smell, my tin was over a year old when I opened it and what a nose raisins ,figs , and blossom. Unforgetable. But in the end I feel that flake is the best way to smoke Va/Perique as the thicker cut slows things down a bit.

Maybe 20 years as a pipe smoker is not enough! Surely my ability to take nicotine has been stretched- but this was too much! I was nausiated by mid bowl and vomitting by the end. True the rainy taste was nice, but the intensity of strength was way too much. IF you are in anyway affected adversly with nicotine steer clear of this one! If you must give it a go- the a small bowl, after a good roast dinner- never on an empty stomach. I tried this a number of times over a month and realised it was just not my cup of tea. I was convinced by some advertising in P7T to give it a go. Please - if you haven't trried it- by 1 tin not a half dozen- check it out then see how you fare.

You can't accuse GLPease of false advertising as Haddo delivers the stout dose of Perique just like the package says. If this blend were a conversation, Perique is definitely the loudmouth. I don't mind having the back of my throat tickled a bit, nor a touch of pepper on my pallette, but this stuff doesn't let up. I try to enjoy the other flavors, and Perique keeps interrupting. If you're a perique lover, ignore this review and buy this tobacco, as it is certainly very well crafted. I'll stick to Elizabethan Mixture where the Perique is more subdued. Incidentally, the Wife just put the kibosh on this one, so now I'll be finishing this tin in my other smoking room--the garage! And yes, I will have to follow this bowl up with some Nightcap (also garage-mode) just so I can taste some tobacco. Haddo's lingers.

"SORRY" Haddo's Delight (Did not delight me) Upon opening the tin I was hit with a very strange odour that reminded me of vinegar.(FOUL AT THAT)It took three light's to get it fired up & then the taste was like vinegar as well! After that passed my nose & throat started to really tickle by the 'very peppery'Perique I would imagine,at this stage I wanted to quit.(Plus now I was sneezing) "No tobacco has had this effect on me before".More than half way through the bowl,I was really asking myself "What all the fuss was about" My tongue felt as though it had an ounce of extremely hot pepper bored into it.All up I have now given tobacco more than a fair trial,by smoking at least five to six bowl's in various pipe's,& my opinion has not altered.I'm very disappointed after hearing so much about Haddo's Delight,but I can't lie.Hope your experience will be more positive.

Heresy time again. I guess my throat is too sensitive to Perique tobacco because this tobacco tore up my throat so much that I could not finish the bowl each of the three times I tried this. I have never regularly smoked any blend that has a significant Perique component. I'm assuming this is what tore up my throat. Probably a good tobacco for those that like strong Virginia with equally strong Perique, but not for me.

This is not a beginner’s pipe tobacco.

Even some seasoned pipe smokers might have issues with it because it requires sloooooow smoking. I certainly wouldn’t impress anyone with the lack of smoke I seem to produce when I smoke a bowl of this. Even lighting it requires a gentle touch, IMO.

If you can find the right place and draw to smoke this, it’s quite good. Undoubtedly Virginia for some sweetness, but the perique and burley somewhat flatten it out. If you come in puffing like a champ, expect to not like this blend.

I’m not an overly “experienced” VA/Per smoker, but I do like them. I don’t think I can launch into a tirade of flavors as sometimes I think I have a fried set of taste buds or others are perhaps stretching to achieve an award for palate of the month.

For me, I like Va/Pers just fine, but I still find some issues smoking them in the flavor department. I do get a sweet, but I also get a fullness and a bit of fruit from time to time. I can also find myself getting some burnt and wretched tastes...which indicates I’m smoking too quickly.

When I find that magical spot in smoking, this is a desirable smoke for me. I am going to grab a couple tins to sit in for a while to see how it ages. I don’t expect to smoke this more than once or twice a month, so by the time I’d open a next tin it could be a year or two down the road...unless my tastes change.

I’d like to give this two ratings... one star for new smokers to see...three stars for experienced pipers. So, we’ll settle the dispute in the middle with a two. One day this, too, will change.

I recently discovered a tin that I had stored in a freezer bag inside an airtight ammunition container dated 05/06/09 that is still fresh & moist. This tin is nearly full. Imagine my "delight." It has an aroma of vinegar that is very dominant & the cocoa flavoring is still noticeable as well. I'm letting it air out occasionally but still, after ten years of aging that strong vinegar aroma will not yield... if that's what it is. Yes... It was fairly good but nothing special.

Perique & whatever else was too abundant in this mixture & the flavor of any spirits other than vinegar had become unoticeable. There is so much Perique & I guess that, combined with the Rum flavoring fried my palate & pretty much felt like tongue bite. I couldn't handle it back then & can't today. This tobacco finally started easing up on my palate only during the fourth quarter... too late! Who was Haddo anyway? Whoever, he must have been a real boozer who liked Perique.

Rather than condemn or recommend Haddo's Delight, try it for yourself if you feel like this may be a blend that pleases your palate. It was rough on mine even after aging for 10 years... didn't improve or seem to make any significant change in flavor & may have even become more objectionable. Not for this piper ever again. G. L. Pease can keep all these types of blends. FWIW, I also thought Westminster was another loser. My thoughts only but we're all different in DNA with varying taste receptors & many might find this "exceptional."

First reviewed in 2/23/2011 from a tin dated 05/06/09. Couldn't handle it back then & set it aside for a while. This same tin is still in my possession & nearly full. I recently found it and a couple of others that were stored in their original containers within a freezer bag, inside an airtight, waterproof, ammunition container. Imagine my "delight." I think the one who blended this tin was drinking the Rum on the job & stubbed his toe while mixing all the ingredients together. Yes... Throughout my ordeal I was able to discover something of his character... he was a real boozer who liked Perique. Because of this & a few other GLP blends (I also thought Westminster was awful) I tend to stay away from them. I recently purchased a tin of Blairgowrie & if that one doesn't work, the Prince of Pease & I will be parting ways.

Honestly, after ten years of aging, imagine how disappointed I was... expecting a much better smoke. Just goes to show that aging might even detract from the quality of some blends. I think extra Perique gave it additional strength but at the cost of a chile pepper effect & the Rum made it burn like a forest fire in June. It has a good burning quality about it. Perique & vinegar is dominant initially but subsides a little after all the tobaccos meld into a halfway decent smoking experience. When the bakky melds after about one third is burned off is when this blend improves a little & treats you with that blissful Vitamin N. That was the best thing about this blend... the strength! This concoction provides plenty of Vitamin N... something I seek out while shopping for pipe tobacco & I respect those who rated this highly as it appears to be quite a popular blend. Finally, I didn't like it too much then & after twelve years of aging, don't like it too much now... maybe even less. Not too bad but shall never purchase another. Maybe another 10 years of age?

The tin description fooled me by saying this is a stout blend, it's not, atleast not by my standards. I'd put this somewhere in the perique-aromatic department, if such exists. Some might call it a Va/Per, but in my limited experience this is a different beast.

Now don't think i'm dissapointed, rather pleasantly surprised! Haddos is everything the usual aromatic isn't, while still being one.

From the tin it gives a powerful scent of fruit wine, plumy with a touch of red berries. Nice!

I don't understand people calling this strong, it's not strong in nicotine nor too strong in perique. Smoking this is really pleasant, a full aromatic experience and a nicely balanced smoke, with figgy, plummy sweetness and some peppery notes on the retrohale. Awesome mid-bowl characteristics! Delightful!

It's actually quite funny, that when I finally gave up on trying to find the perfect aromatic, I happened to find it in Haddos Delight:-)

I rarely smoke blends with burley in them as so many of them seem to have a non descriptive flavor. The presence of figs and rains is pronounce the peri questions is properly proportioned as a condiment should be. All in all, this is a very satisfying smoke.

This is a very intriguing blend and one I find myself smoking more than I first thought I would. The plum (if thats what it is) is mild but noticeable -- although the overall impression is one that is closer to a good V/per. The burley is sharp and the Virginias are tasteful and rich. And then the Perique. There is a lot of perique. But its a mellower perique than one finds in some blends. All that said this is a full and rather sharp blend. Thats not a complaint at all. The nic hit is medium and a touch more perhaps. It reminds me of hal o the wynd with a mild casing added. It also reminds me a bit of War Horse. All told its good stuff.

I should add that it says ribbon cut, but its not really a ribbon cut, its more a rough cut or even a broad cut.

Just to start off....I'm cellaring two tins, one to try in a year and another in 5 years. I really like this blend but it is very difficult to explain why. All the components make it very complex. The Virginias are the stars, but are well supported by the rest of the cast. This is my first foray into the original mixtures from GL Pease, but I may be getting further into the line after this experience. Two thumbs up!

Oliver Haddo! The Great Wild Caricature of Aleister Crowley, makes an appearance in name only on the tin label of Pease's Haddo's Delight. Wow, To Mega Therion would've been proud. (Probably) Crowley was known to have smoked rum soaked Perique. I would assume that the rum tamed the Beast, so to speak, Or there was a blend from a local blender that that soaked Virginia, burley and a High percentage of Perique in rum. I'm going with the latter, as Crowley never stated that he blended his own tobacco. I've never come across it in his Magickal Diaries.

The tin note of Haddo's Delight is Chocolate covered Cherries. Exquisite! The heavy handed perique really comes out in delicate prunes and fig. I have been on the fence of whether it is topped with brandy or rum. I decided when I opened a tin of Barbary Coast, that Haddos was topped with brandy. Now Im not to sure. It may indeed be rum.

The perique is strong and spicey with hints of chocolate and dried fruits. The cavendish? It may mellow the mixture a bit. The Virginias and burley really marry well with the perique, making for a fine stout smoke. Very complex blend that changes throughout the bowl.

This Beast is a Va/per lovers dream come true.

:Update: While dropping in on a popular pipe forum, I had a chance to ask Pease what topping is used on Haddo's Delight. His answer...dark rum. So no plum brandy involved with this blend. The tobaccos and rum are giving you that lovely smell. Recently I opened a 3 1/2 year old tin, I thought I discovered some mold. With close inspection I discovered the shinny crystals of plume. This blend ages exceptionally well, notes of raisins and figs, stewed fruits and rum. Yum. The cavendish adds a brown sugar note that throws this tobacco over the top. Usually the cavendish shows itself around mid bowl. I don't know if age has brought out the cavendish or it's a more experienced palate. Probably both. Each bowl is different, because you get more perique sometimes and when it's less perique it falls a bit flat. The perique is the star of the show, so finding the correct pack is important. That's been my experience with this Beast. Others may not find this to be the case, and tins may vary. We are taking small batch pipe tobacco, here. I'm interested in tasting a 5 and 10 year old tin now.

I got a ten year old sample of this in the mail recently. I had smoked a few odd bowls of it years back, but this was totally different. The bottom is sort of square, which reminds me of old Lombard that I've smoked. That makes me think it comes from the burley and perique that they share in common. The topping seems to fill in gaps rather than be its own note. It's strong, so I smoked half bowls, or ate before smoking.

Overall, I'm a big fan of this at ten years old. Not something I'm going to rush to put in my rotation, but if I buy the odd tin and forget about it for a decade, I'll have a nice smoke.

Haddo's Delight is a masterpiece of blending. The tin note is a combination of tangy tobacco with a plum brandy topping. The combination of the topping and the perique give the tin note a little something reminiscent to chocolate covered raisins. The perique is strong but the flavor is an enhancer. The flavors and strength build quite nicely down the bowl. This is a sweet, stout, spicy mixture. The Virginia is always present, wafting in and out with a superb sweetness. The Black Cavendish and Air-cured Leaf really smooth out the blend. You need to be patient because it's like nothing else available on the market and redefines the smoker's conceptions of pipe tobaccos. Lastly, the relatively high nicotine content of Haddo’s Delight tends to cause an unpleasant sensation. I'm a little drunk right now. But I still love Haddo’s Delight.

Haddo's is very similar to U.S.S Mason by C&D as to the taste and incorporates the same Brandy topping. This is a blend that is a true velvet hammer, goes down easy and very tasty and then halfway through the nicotine hits you like a shovel. Haddo's is not a favorite but is certainly delicious and I will keep some on hand when I want something very different. Absolutley needs to be tried by every piper since it is that unusual.

I got this bc they were out of exhausted rooster. I thought the sounded interesting and I wanted to expand my experience with va/per blends. Having my first blend of such being deluxe navy rolls I believe I may have have spoiled my palate. I do like this tobacco, and would recommend it to a friend or other. My time with this blend has been an unexpected joy, and something of a let down at the same time. Overall it has been a learning experience that has broadened my view of the range of these blends.

In the tin it looks fairly normal. With exception of the varied colors, it could be a drugstore or house blend you get from any where. I am partial to the dunhill line, and the standard of presentation they maintain is significantly higher than a lot of other blenders. You can definitely see the Virginias in some shades of gold and mustard hues. Some cavendish in various finishes of black. Some flat, some shiny. The tin note to me is a full slap in the mouth of rum raisin ice cream. Has a strong reminiscence of liquor and maybe plums. Like a traditional Xmas pudding. (My wife is Irish, I've eaten the flaming treat a few times). The smell from the tin may be a bit of a shock to newer smokers, as it not much like tobacco is expected to smell.

This bland packs and lights like a drugstore blend. Easy as pie that is. The charring light is quite sweet to me. As well as the first third of the bowl. I generally type as I write and my pipe goes out on me. I'm smoking this now, and have just now noticed the sweetness dies down on the relight. I may double char this next time to see if it works better for my tastes. It is much better now to me. Hmm, took a good 12 pipes of this to notice that...

Having just hit the halfway point now, it is behaving much as it normally does. The slight gurgle has died down and the smoke is more of a dark sweet like extra dark chocolate with a touch of raisins. Slightly sour. Delicious however burning very cool with a silky mouth feel to the smoke.

Moving into the last quarter it is starting to pick up the pace. Slight nic buzz starting to hit me, so I would say it is a solid medium to full strength blend. It's leaving a pleasant taste on my lips and teeth. I think this goes well after dinner, but maybe not if I've had dessert.

It seems to have reached its end now. Bit of a sizzle as a drop of juice hits the cherry in the bottom of my peterson 01. Not worth the risk a bite so I'm going to let it go. That being said, very little dottle left. I think the sizzle may have killed the last of the bowl. I would recommend keeping a pipe cleaner nearby if you lean towards faster smoking, as I can gurgle in the pipe. The nic content may be a bit much for anyone sensitive to high nicotine content. Otherwise it is very good in its own right. I don't think I will buy more more after this tin is finished, as I would like to try more of the gl pease line. And I may let the remainder set awhile longer to see how it developed with a bit of time. Try this one if you're looking for a different experience from perique, it can surprise you. Happy puffing

A blend that pleasantly tingles the palate. Full flavor, for sure. Into the bowl the Virginias and Perique can be clearly identified. The raisinesque top notes come out, particularly on the retrohale. I also get a flavor that is like cigar leaf coming through at times. Pleasant for me, as I'm also a gar guy. Further in the taste gets a bit sharp and edgy. Overall, a good, full-flavored experience. 3+.

This has moved into my top 3 Va/Pers. This is an extremely satisfying and tasty smoke. I love the plum and spice in the tin aroma. It packs and lights perfectly. Just enough perique and not overbearing. I usually would not prefer this much flavoring in a tobacco, but with this one it works. This is in my permanent rotation and I love it in the morning when I can sneak it in. Packs a punch, but again its not too heavy handed. If you love Va/Pers and you are looking to expand your rotation, definitely give this one a try.

Having read somewhere that Aleister Crowley smoked rum soaked but otherwise pure perique and given it a go with some intriguing results (herein my interest in Crowley ends), I thought I would give this offering that is named after a character inspired by him a go.

The tin aroma reminds me somewhat of fresh Carter Hall, a little sweet perhaps with hints of something from a tin of Quality Street, only a lot nicer. The colours of the tobacco are rich, as with all GL Pease's offerings, with a lot of rich earthy browns and some darker ribbons included. It was quite moist but this doesn't effect the lighting any but the length of some of the ribbons makes them clump up a little making the packing a little but not too tricky. The smoke itself is delightful as those sweet Carter Hall like flavours come through. As it progresses, the perique begins to rears it's head and, while not overwhelming, adds a dark but pleasurable addition to the smoke as the tobacco underneath begin to shine. There is a bit of roughness at the bottom of the bowl though, even when smoked gently which takes the shine off it a little. Also, I found this to be tremendously strong, certainly more than any other Pease tobacco that I've smoked. Thankfully, I've smoked this in a pipe with quite a small bowl so it does not become an issue.

This is a tremendously gorgeous pipe tobacco that I'd be happy to smoke more regularly save for the roughness and the strength, and possibly the price too. Maybe it improves with aging - sadly I am smoking it young as I don't have the wallet to cellar to any great length - but as it stands, this tobacco is pure concentrated evil and I swear the most miniscule ribbon could turn us all into hermit crabs. I cannot, in all good consciousness, give this four stars but it is so darned close but, in the meantime, I'd give it 3.75. The one thing about evil when it does it's job properly though, it's so darn tempting.

I have read that Pease blends improve significantly with age and maybe that is true with this one.

I have smoked 4 bowls of this and haven't particularly enjoyed any of them. I think this would be better smoked in the winter. I smoked a bowl of this when it was about 90 degrees outside and felt like I was about to pass out. It was very harsh and it left me with an upset stomach.

I like a little Perique (Irish Oak is one of my favorite tobaccos) but this one has been too much for me.

Maybe I am just not man enough for it. I will try and give an update in the fall/winter when it has had some time to age.

EDIT: 9/7/13

I just jarred most of what I had left of my 2oz. tin. I smoked another bowl (in the cool of the morning this time) and was again disappointed. It was characterized by burning in the back of the throat (I like spicy, this is just harsh) and an upset stomach. I couldn't even finish the bowl.

I can smell the raisins that people consistently comment on but it is overpowered (to my taste) by the perique. I had the opened tin in a container (to keep the smell from bothering my wife) with 9 pipes and two other opened tins of tobacco and when I open the container all I can smell is the friggin' Haddo's!

'Gonna let this joker chill for a year or two before I try again. Maybe I'll get some Irish Oak in the meantime.

UPDATE2: 04-2014

Okay, now that this tin has gotten some age one it I am rereviewing it. When I opened the jar I still got the familiar cloying scent from this. I was sure I was not going to enjoy it. I went outside with a bowl of this and some hot black coffee. Man, what a difference! The sweetness, with a slight pepperiness. That cloying aroma gives way to a very nice smoke.

I will say, I've had several bowls of this since reopening the jar and it seems to smoke completely different outside than it does indoors (my truck counts as indoors right?). It seems to loose that subtle sweetness and I think a nice cool breeze does wonders for the peppery Perique. If you are just getting into Va/Per's I would suggest going with something a bit more mild (like PS Bullseye Flake).

All in all (sorry for the long review) I give this 4 stars AS LONG AS: you let it get a bit of age; smoke it slow; enjoy on a nice cool/cold morning. That's a lot of conditions so I can't give this more than 3 stars.

This was some ok stuff, but way too much perique for me. The pepper drowned out the other components, my nose was running a little and my stomach a little upset. Felt like I had to fight to finish the bowl. Ding Ding Ding...Haddo won the fight. But I'm not gonna do a rematch.

Not bad, but not memorable either. Smells and tastes like some rum flavoured blends from C&D . The C&D AfterHours is better. Tobacco is too dry, difficult to keep lighted, and it releases moisture. Will not buy again.

Smells like chocolate covered raisins in the tin. Hard to keep lit even after drying time. Not really my thing. Will not add to regular rotation but will keep it on hand.

This is a nice and stout,well mannered blend and will be regular in my rotation if not an everyday smoke.I have tried it in several pipes and it really worked well in some and didn't in others.

Have noticed that airing out for 1/2 hr. to forty five minutes lets each of the different tobaccos enhance and come out, so when smoking it you can taste the virginia, the burley and the black cavendish,perique in the blend.

If you like VA/VAPERS you gotta try this one.

This Va/Per blend from Mr. Pease is fantastic. When I opened the tin I was greeted by something more than what i've come to expect from a Va/Per blend it was very close to Dunhill NightCap when I opened the tin so this was an unexpected suprise. Very smooth and satisfying the the Virginias came through first with the nuttiness of the burleys making themselves known followed by the Perique with the Black Cavendish smoothing things out. This is a VERY good offering from Mr. Pease, One which is now a member of my regular rotation and therefore higly recommended.

I am so glad I decided to pull the trigger on this. I was looking for a new VaPer to try, looking for only the strongest blend around. I am glad my shot in the dark struck a bullseye!

Upon opening the tin, which was dated 10/01/2012, I was smashed in the nose by a sweet super ripe fruit aroma, which has to be the Perique. This blend is young as the tin date says, so I am very excited to have this, as I can gradually note the changes from aging.

After I got my bowl loaded, lit and tamped, my olfactory senses went into overdrive. The Perique seriously lays the smack down hard, which is exactly what I wanted.

I only smoked a tiny bowl just to get a rough idea of what this has to offer, so I will update this review once I have had more.

However, I do believe I may have found my Holy Grail, when it comes to VaPers.

Alright, just had my second bowl.

This stuff is exceptional. I hate comparing tobaccos but this is very reminiscent of Irish Oak, just much heavier in the Perique department. That is perfectly fine by me, as I love the crap out of Irish Oak.

During the first half of the bowl your tastebuds are borderline assaulted by the spice heaven of the Perique, and then more towards the end the tobacco gets very rich and deep. I do detect wonderful notes of cocoa and raisins, not as much as figs as you would expect. I definitely think I have found the Holy Grail of VaPers in my eyes.

I do want to try Hal O the Wynd though, just to make sure.

Also, not that it really matters as I don't think many of us sniff the bowls too much after smoking...but it smells like black pepper.

My first bowl review of Haddo's. At first I was unsure of this blend. At the beginning of the toke I was feeling a little too heavy on spicyness/pepperiness. Perhaps i just pulled too hard or fast on it. Also, had a slight issue with moisture coming up through the stem. Maybe needs to dry out a bit. This smoke really grew on me throughout the bowl. I see this is a sign of a real quality blend. In the middle it was very earthy. It almost tasted like I had broken up a cigar and dropped it in the bowl. Perhaps that was from the Burley element, which is my first experience. Towards the end the earthiness really mellowed out, easing slowly into a nice smooth flavor on the palate. I found myself wishing that the bowl was not finished, yearning for more. I did feel the nicotine hit, but was not overpowered by it as some were. My rating: Very enjoyable. May turn to 4 stars upon further review.

One of my first experiences with a Pease blend, along with Odyssey. Usually a smoker of latakia mixtures, but wanted to try something different, so I picked up a tin of this along with the Odyssey recently. This is definitely different, in a good way.

No experience with VaPer blends, so I can't speak to how it compares in that area, but this is definitely a great blend to mix things up a little for a latakia smoker like me. Tasted a lot of the flavors I've read in the reviews here, and in the tin description, raisins, stewed fruit, etc.

I read somewhere that it does indeed have a touch of rum, and this is detectable as well. I enjoy this flavor. Not overpowering, just a nice change of pace. That pleasant rum undertone is why I'm also drawn to Black Frigate on occasion.

Good burn, few relights, burned down to a fine white ash. Very pleased, and will get this again. Impressed with my first two Pease blends and will explore further. Along with Dunhill and C&D blends, these Pease blends seem to behave well for me.

I was so impressed with Chelsea Morning that I ordered four other blends from G.L.Pease in my last large tobacco order. I opened my tin of Haddo's Delight and was amazed at the aroma. This is truely something different. It's fruity and lively with a hint of rum? The look of the tobacco was a bit interesting as well. I saw a great deal of bright colored tobacco. Time to light up and see what we have here.

Taste: Very nice. It tastes as good as it smells. I really like this as a nice change of pace from many of my latakia rich blends I smoke. Being from Kentucky, I like the burley notes in this one. Makes me feel "home". I usually don't like burley as it tends to come across as too bitter and overpowering to my tastes. In this blend it is perfect. Dare I say, the first time I've ever loved burley in a blend.

Room Note: Pretty nice. Almost aromatic, but not quite.

Final Thoughts: This is a very cool burning mixture. I've tried this in my Dr.Grabow grand duke. This pipe is small and thin walled. It tends to get very hot if I am not careful. From start to finish, it barely got warm with this smoke. I look forward to trying this in some of my better quality pipes. Another thing worth noting with this blend is the nicotine hit. It's huge. Being an ex-cigarette smoker, I can handle it. Sometimes even welcome it. However, for those that do not handle large doses of the big "N" well, be warned. It is very strong. This blend will become a part of my rotation. Four Stars.

A nice VaPer, with the added cav and burley not really evident to me as separate notes. The perique sensative may find that element a bit too strong, but a nice stout smoke all-in-all. Since I know there are many tobaccos out there I would rate a 4, the question arises would I rebuy this particular tobacco, assuming my tastes don't change much more. In this case, the answer is probably not.

Not really my cup of tea. I like my blends with more recognizable nuances. This is a whole different monster and its also kind of a "grandpa smoke". I don't like it.

Update: I picked this up again after a month and it's more tolerable now that the moisture level has waned. It does smoke nice. There is a load of perique in this guy, which is not for everybody, but the fruity notes work OK (is that the perique?). One could envision Bilbo Baggins puffing on this in his churchwarden, but I find it a bit too odd. Upgrade to two stars.

11/22/12 Update: I recently ran into and smoked a five year old tin of HD. My initial impressions were not so favorable, as you can see. Now, I can hardly say enough good things. It's WAAAAY different than before. Five years of aging on this perique laden beaut takes this blend to a different level. When fresh, the chaos is at volume ten. Now, I have the ability to "see" what is going on. It is full in taste, has the strength of an pit bull and is unlike anything else I have ever smoked...in a class of it's own. I know and have read that Pease designs his blends with aging in mind so buy his blends with years on them, if you can. Four stars.

A very rich flavor. Volumous smoke and pleasant room note. . It's the most interesting Virginia / Perique out there and hands down worth a try.

The Perique is peppery from the beginning and the sweet virginias add everything else.

Many say it knocks them down from nicotine, but I suspect it's really more the perique doing the job. This blend is quite perique heavy. I don't find it to be all that powerful in terms of nicotine kick, but for those not used to heavy perique, you are going to feel a bit swimmy!

I reluctantly sampled Haddo's on the advice of a fellow pipe-smoker. I didn't think that this tobacco would really have anything that interested me other than the Virginia and Perique component. My preconceptions were thrown for a loop when I tried it. It was much smoother and tastier than expected.

Yes, the Rum casing is a bit over the top, both in the tin note and in the smoke, but Haddo's is a very fine tobacco with a lot of flavor. The overpowering rum flavor dissipates after a few days and becomes a bit more tame, anyway. It's not an everyday smoke, but when I want something that's a little different, this is it.

Unfortunately for me the eggnog/rum flavouring overshadows the VA's & Perique. I dont like aromatic tasting tobaccos, and this blend is probably Pease's closest thing to an aromatic, but the flavour is delightful, reminding me of one of my favourite blends from C&D, Exhausted Rooster! Too bad it's a bit overwhelming.. My tin was very young, so I'll leave it to age and then update my review, hoping the flavouring will mellow a bit to allow the other leaves to make their presense.

Finally opened up the can of Haddo's that I'd been saving for a special occasion. What an experience! As soon as I popped the lid my nose was assaulted by raisin, rum, fig, & spice cake. I took it to the wife & aske for her opinion, she liked it A LOT. It lit nicely, & the first couple of puffs were dark & rich & very close to the tin aroma. Towards the bottom of the bowl it proved to be much stronger than I had originally suspected, for the second time in my life, a bowl of tobacco made me light headed & almost nauseous (not in a bad way, just.a true nix hit). Throughout the bowl, the wife enjoyed the room note, so much actually that she asked to try it out. Unfortunately she inhaled, I think she is still coughing. This tobacco burns clean & I was sorry to see that I'd reached the bottom of the bowl. I'll be immediately ordering a pound of this, on of the best tobacco's I've ever experienced.

Great stuff. You'll probably either love it or hate it. Give it some time though as the strong waft of overripe bannanas and flavour takes a little getting used to at first. I must admit that while i enjoy this straight, i mostly smoke it 50/50 with Union Square which is sublime. As always with GLP, the tobaccos are first class. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a competitor or a newb.

Haddo definitely needs to be aged to get the best smoke from it. Upon opening the tin it smells awesome! Like a fig newton and even a slight chocolate covered rasin scent in there. But it is rather harsh at first smoke. Buy this blend in advance open, take a sniff, then shelve it for a few months. HUGE difference! One of my favite smokes lately. Opening this six month old tin of Haddo's Delight revealed loose varied cut ribbons in different shades of brown, black, and orange. The tin aroma was of figs, raisins, and chocolate covered cherries. It had a good moisture level and was clean to the touch.

An unlit sip brought the raisin and fig taste to my palate. Overall the raisin and fig tastes seemed to dominate. I could also grasp the brandy flavor that other reviews I have read have mentioned. It was very full bodied with a wicked hit of nicotine. This blend burned to a dry gray ash, leaving a nice room note, and a short finish.

This blend may have been too complex for me to give an adequate review. I have been used to smoking more straightforward tobaccos of late, and I was not ready for what this blend had to offer. I enjoyed the nice sweet flavors I could detect, and the cool burning of this blend. I wouldn't smoke this blend on an empty stomach. I tried it once, and it left me feeling queasy. I think this would be a great after lunch smoke to carry one through to the end of the work day. I also think anyone who enjoys a full bodied, high nicotine blend with perique will enjoy this smoke. I have another tin in my cellar I'm going to let sit for a few years, and then tackle this one again.

I have to admit, when I tried this at first, I just did not like this blend. It tasted green and overbearing to me and as I did not want to slam Greg, I just resealed it and put it to the back of my opened tins chest. It has been many months now, and I mved into a new home recently and I found this blend and thought what the heck, I will give it another try. Oh what a difference a few months makes! I am finding I like it a lot now. I think this blend just needs more time to mature to become a nice blend.

In the tin, it is very peat like and tart smelling, composed of the spectrum of colors and in a ribbon/rough cut. It is very easy to load in the pipe and quite easy to lite. Once lit it burns nice and slow and emits a strong, sharp room note very typical of VaPers. When my wife complained about the aroma, I knew I was going to enjoy it this time. I love perique and this contains a great deal of it. The mixture of Virginias along with the perique make for a not so subtle, rich, creamy, spicy smoke. It has non of the haylike sweetness of a lot of VA based blends, it is deep and flavorful and very rich in taste right from the start, yet it produces no tongue bite at all. It smokes great with coffee or a beer and could easily be an all day blend for those that like strong tobaccos. It burns down to a dark grey ash with a little dottle at the bottom of the pipe. I have smoked 10 bowls of this in two days now and the more i smoke it the more I am liking it, in fact I just ordered another 8oz tin of it. So I have moved from unimpressed to recommending it now. For perique lovers, it is a must try.

If John Wayne had liked perique, (maybe he did!) this would have been his goto smoke. When I am in a REAL perique mood, this is the tobacco that flls the bill. Good late day smoke when you need to be up late and on top of your game. Not a mild number by any stretch, but it does what one would expect from a name like it has.

Well, the tin note promised an interesting aromatic but it did not deliver. It was rather confusing, in fact, as it didn't seem to stick to particular flavor. At first it was peppery and but that didn't last and it moved to bland and then it was just "smoke". G.L. Pease said he blends all of his tobacco with aging in mind so I will age this one a bit and try again in a year or so. For now, a huge "meh".

Edit: I tried it again on 7/17/2012. This wasn't bad at all. It's not one of my favorites, but it certainly had a really pleasant sweetness along with some spice!

This blend presents me with a serious problem... I enjoy the flavor immensely, but find this stuff to be so damned strong!

The tin aroma is striking... it's got all the figgy, raisin-y goodness of Perique... on steroids. It smells so concentrated, almost like candy. Amarena cherries come to mind - which perhaps gives credence to the notion that there IS an alcoholic topping on this (the so-called "exclusive process"). But if this is a topping, then I really don't mind... it complimented the blend nicely without overshadowing the individual characters of the constituent tobaccoes.

This gives rise to what I truly enjoy about HD. This blend let's all of it's players be heard clearly and in harmony. Another Perique blend I enjoy, MacBaren Arcadian Perique, is so dense in its flavor. It's like the Wagner of tobacco... complex, blustery, great thick walls of texture. Haddo's is more like Bach - equally complex but in a more orderly, methodical way. The parts were all heard clearly and in good measure. I enjoy both, but in entirely different ways.

The downside for me is the wretched nicotine buzz I got after smoking this. I was thoroughly dizzy... much like when I smoke an entire, high-quality cigar. In fact, the pungent, rich flavors of this tobacco made me feel like I was smoking a cigar - not literally, but the overall experience was similar.

Sadly, I won't be indulging in HD regularly, I guess I'm a nicotine wimp. But I do like it. Anyone looking for a unique and challenging tobacco should try this.

Yes. It is good! This is an excellent tobacco blend that provides nothing but straight-up tobacco flavor with a good burning quality. Perique is dominant initially but later, the tobaccos meld into an enjoyable smoking experience.

This concoction provided plenty of Vitamin N...something I seek out in pipe tobaccos. Not really fond of the wimpy blends but indulge in them on occasion.

I'll be smoking this again some day. Sampled in a size two Dunhill Shell Briar.

=UPDATE #3= I must have had a bad batch or bad tin for my first initial review (If it didn't tell you how disappointed I was then I'm telling you now). A friend of mine allowed me to sample a tin of this stuff that he had just purchased. I figured, let's give it another shot. Upon opening the tin it smelled of the normal VaPER scents but also of cheese, CHEESE...not in a bad way. It smoked with the same flavors that one could detect with the nose, plum, fig, hay, and then of course cheese (a rich goat cheese I might add). It was surprisingly delightful. Consequently, a different buddy of mine that was smoking with us also had a tin which smelled the same as the tin I was now smoking from. It does seem my tin did not share the same qualities as theirs.

I'll be sampling a few other Pease blends in the future, but will make sure to allow them to age a bit.

OLDI was truly disappointed that I didn't find something more appealing here. Reading reviews and descriptions of this tobacco I thought for sure I was going to love this.

I picked up a tin. Upon opening it the smell of raisins and sweetness filled my nose. I was excited. Lit up a bowl and nothing... flat... No taste, except, and sorry to use the term, smoke. I thought I was smoking cardboard with pieces of tire chips in it. I've tried it a few times with the same result. Maybe I got a bad tin of it?? Maybe I need to let it sit.

I did and it was better, but the UPDATE 3 review says it all. This blend is one I enjoy quite a bit with friends.

I wanted to like this blend, it has so many qualities I normally enjoy in my baccys. I just couldn't do it though. I tried it a couple times when I first got it and it gave me tongue burn. I set it aside and thought I'd give it some time. Came back to it a month later and tried it a couple more times. While it didn't give me tongue burn the second go around, I just didn't enjoy the flavor or the burning quality. It reminded me of a strong cigar and I had to keep relighting it. Im going to set this one aside for a year or so and give it one last try, but as of now, not something I would highly recommend.

For the longest time I stayed away from tobaccos blended by the Dark Lord. I would never argue that he's not an expert of tobaccos, but his blends, most being latakia/oriental blends, didn't appeal to me. Then along came Cumberland, which I simply had to try. It was so good that I decided to re-examine his other offerings. For me, Haddo's Delight, a Virginia/perique, was the obvious place to start.

The blend is made of several Virginias and what Pease describes as a "generous measure" of perique, with unflavored black cavendish and white burley added to round out the flavor and add more strength. This is a beautiful tobacco to look at, with rich, deep golds, browns, and black. I popped open my tin of it as soon as I got to the car, and treated my nose to the rich aroma of fresh coffee and raisins. My daughters were in the car with me, and both remarked that, unlike most tobacos, the tin aroma of Haddo's Delight was pleasant, and both remarked on the smell of raisins. One mentioned Haroset, a fruity Jewish Passover treat. The moisture level of the tobacco is, to my smoking technique, just right. When you buy a Pease tobacco you pay for tobacco rather than added moisture.

Arriving home, I immediately loaded my first bowl of the blend, then set fire to it. The burst of flavor was wonderful, and very smooth. Tamped down, relit, and off I went, into what I can only describe as an extremely pleasant smoking experience. Often, perique blends hit my tongue like wolverines, but Haddo's Delight provides the deep and spicy richness of perique without the bite. The burley and cavendish bring some nice richness and body to the blend, but neither overwhelm the tang and taste of the perique. The Virginia provides a nice sweetness, but is tempered by the other tobaccos. The taste left in my mouth after finishing the smoke, though, is a pleasant sweetness, like a memory of a sunny afternoon. The word "complex" comes to mind to describe this blend; it's strong without being dizzying, full of flavor without being overpowering. Deeper into the bowl, especially the last third of it, the flavor and characteristics of the blend change subtly, taking on a bit more of an earthiness. But the tobacco is never unsettling, never bitter or rancid. There are more undertones than overtones, nuttiness, tang, sweet, fruity, rich.

I so enjoyed the first bowl of Haddo's Delight that I immediately loaded a second. It's very rare that I don't wait a couple of hours after a smoke to have another, but couldn't resist. I've interspersed bowls of it since, between bowls of favorite Virginias, Cumberland, and another Virginia/perique blend. Each time I come back to Haddo's I receive the same pleasant surprise, the same, well, delight.

Haddo's Delight is a fine burley, cavendish, Virginia, perique combination. I recently finished an '06 tin and will order more. HD, if sufficiently dry, will have excellent burning characteristics, a fine room note, and an interesting fig/raisin flavor. Although I primarily smoke English and Balkan blends, HD is increasingly a favorite. Recommended.

Like every Pease tobacco's, this is a high quality one. But, at the end..... it's unsmokable: raw, crude,inelegant, boorish. And Pease is a sort of illiterate blender. This cook uses quality and tastefull ingredients, but definitly he's inapt to assemble and amalgamate the ingredients. The result is......raw. Sorry Pease, you are discharged. You can smoke a Pease's blend a time a week.....and is very good. You smoke a Pease's blend two time a week.....and is goog. You smoke a Pease's blend a time in a day.....and is unpleasant. you smoke a Pease's blend all the day....and is nauseating. So.....if you are looking for an occasional good tobacco: try it. But if you are looking for a trusty partner....just flee from Pease!!!!

I open a tin aged 6 years to try it again: horrid ! And the age turn it very very very SIGARETTISH !

This is only my third review and my first review of a "cellard" tobacco! My initial remark would have to be how unusual this stuff smelled after breaking the seal. To me it was almost nauseating; I really had to set the stuff down and leave the room. The following day I consulted previous reviews to find this pungent aroma was normal. I was in love at first light. Perique as God intended it to be! This stuff was so complex I wonder if I am even qualified to comment on it. Very simply, full flavored and quite smooth, it was aromatic and satisfying in the nicotine department. I am going to "cellar" everything I get my hands on. I have smoked alot of different tobaccos from strong englishes to aromatic blends, including drug store blends. It has,for now; quenched my appetite for trying anything else. I will keep trying things for sure, but I don't think there is anything out there that could taste or satisfy any better. I recommend this to the experienced puffer, not that a rookie couldn't throughly enjoy it. Its like going from blended whiskey to a single malt. If you can wait at least a year after buying it, it will be a memorable experience,I promise! My final thought: THIS WEED ROCKS!!!!!!

I have strongly desidered to taste Haddo's, believe me beloved Fellows of the TR Community!

Oh, dear Lord, Haddo's is really weird smelling in the tin. My first thought was that the weed has been literally soaked into a liquor (I know it's rhum, but regarding me it could even be cognac...).

Haddo's lights and burns easy. The liquor topping affects a bit heavily the first third of the bowl. The smoke starts mild, sweet and liqueurish. A VaB thing, at this stage I'm not able to detect any of the Perique which should be added in "generous" measure. Smooth, very smooth indeed. Reaching the second third, the topping has gradully disappeared, leaving room to strenght and body. At this stage I clearly feel the VaBPer combination, and should start slowing down my sipping speed to avoid a slightly ashy feeling. Notes of stewed fruits but not much pepper... The last third is where the smoke is going be masculine, still sweet but earthy, of ripe fruits, traces of smokiness a-la fired Kentucky... and here the pepper tingling my nose.

A nice trip, and very uncommon experience in evolution of strength, flavours and body. Haddo's delighting me.

Ehi, the driest smoke and ashes ever ! Plus: the only non-aromatic tobacco whose room aroma pleases my wife, and that's absolutely wonderful.

Haddo's Delight is pleasant. There's plenty going on here. At one point or another, each of the component tobaccos make themselves known.

No bite. Easy to light and keep lit.

If straight Virginias and Vapers are "sippers", then Haddo's Delight is a "quaffer". Fill a bowl, light it and just smoke it. Don't worry too much about missing out on "subtleties" and "complexities" if your technique isn't just right. There is plenty of reward to be had by just smoking your damn pipe when filled with Haddo's Delight.

By the way, disregard the quick reviews that simply say "Vile" or "Disguting". They aren't helpful. I wish we there was a feedback system of sorts where we could rate the reviews in terms of helpfulness. Those reviews would get a big thumbs down. There is nothing vile or disgusting about Haddo's Delight.

An unusual blend with an unusual topping. Even though I have to call the topping mild, it is unique and you will notice it! It may just be as simple a thing as rum or brandy (I'm not completely sure which) interacting with Perique, but it makes its presence known. I first purchased a young tin, and the topping was really out there. Next, I found a five-year-old tin on Ebay. This was milder. So much milder, that I decided to mix the two vintages. The resulting amalgam has a flavor I find tolerable. The tobaccos in Haddo's Delight are first rate. The topping is, well, there's the rub. To me, it's a little strange, not overwhelmingly strong, but strange. But then, my next tobacco to review is Murray's production Erinmore Mixture! I find the topping in Haddo's is tamed by certain pipes, like this unmarked handcarved billiard I am smoking it in right now, or a small-bowled pipe. I am duly impressed with the quality of the Virginias, and by the Perique (or Green River Cavendish) content. I can't smoke this all the time, so my 3.5 ounces of blended vintages should hold me for a while. Don't get me wrong, I almost went to four stars on this. The quality is there. That topping, or juice, just gives it somewhat of a freakish quality. I'm sure Haddo would agree.

Hado's Delight form G.L. Pease. What can I say that hasn't been said already...I do about 3 bowls a day, that way it remains special. I alternate with Escudo sometimes, although the two are very different. Westminster is my mainstay these days, especially when driving. Hado's is really a supreme example of tobacco blending. A delightful bouquet of raisins and dried figs from the tin. Packs and lights easily. Can be smoked with one post-charing light. This is a sipping tobacco, not one for pulling hard on. The Louisiana Perique forces you to go slowly (...remember the "gentle art of pipe smoking"), but provides excellent overtones, especially in the second half of the bowl. The Virginias and unflavored Black Cavendish provide body and sweetness. This is REALLY a delightful and almost magical blend, for any time of the day, but especially as a break from whatever your main smoke of the day happens to be. Stocked up the basement for aging purposes. Cheers, and happy smoking!

Despite having many other pleasant experiences with GLPease tobaccos, this is not one of them. I'm not even sure what to call this kind of blend - it's got a bit of everything, yet nothing really shines. The cavendish in the tobacco lends almost no flavor to the smoke, and the usual sweetness of the virginias is all but absent. About the only tobaccos that really make their presence known are the perique and the burley. The perique is definitely on the nasal exhale, though without the virginia sweetness, it feels oddly naked. The burley does add a kick though as pretty every bowl I've had has left me "feeling it". I've finished about half the tin over a 4 month period and it really hasn't changed, tonight's bowl is pretty much the same as the first bowl I had when I cracked the lid open. I'll leave the rest to settle/age for another while longer and if it really doesn't get any better, well, I guess I'll have to mix it into the "melange" jar.

This blend has always amazed me. Here we have both Burley Cavendish, White Burley and Perique to fill out this Virginia blend, and then it's not stronger than any ol' average VaPer? I guess it's the casing that tames it. 'Cause down past midbowl the strength sneaks up on you. And when the blend has had time to breath, it gets more like...real strong Perique'ish (uhm)

I never get used to the stench upon opening this (as with many of Pease's), a very full Cognac-like flavour hits your nostrils, and either you love it or you instantly feel physically ill.

But the bacco by no means tastes like it smells, thank God, and it turns out to be a very decent VaPer blend.

I am a long time Perique lover, and set up against other VaPer's out there, it lands way above average. VaPer's doesn't have to be complex (like HH Acadian), nor can't they all be 'down to earth' perfection (like Orlik's Bulls Eye). But this actually goes into my top-five of all time greatest Virginia/Perique's.

Way better than average in almost every aspect. The heavy flavouring annoys me though, and makes it somewhat of an aromatic in my book. But then again, it would most definitely be in my top-three of all time aromatics ;) And the room note is one of the most pleasant I've ever come across containing this much Perique (I belive at least 10%)

Cut to the chase.. I recommend this blend to all VaPer lovers. Tastes above average, burns above average and all in all a good place to start if you plan on moving in on the exciting Perique territory.

If you read this far, you probably wonder why I call this a VaPer, when it's technically not. It's just that the complimentary ingredients of other baccos are just that - helpful but very discreet.

Haddos is just what it is advertised to be. A good honest smoke with a little topping that is very light. Great Va. here as well as plenty of perique. The cavendish helps to keep the peace among the components. I'm sure the burley is there, but you only feel it in the strength, not in the flavor much.

I have to say this is not one of my favorites. It's good and the remaining tins in my cellar will be smoked with pleasure. As far as buying more? Well, that will be determined later. I can recommend this to fellow pipers because I think it will please enough people with it's profile to be in the market place for a long time to come. Just sorry it isn't a bell ringer for me.

Haddo's Delight very nice tobacco...at first light you find this mixture quite spicy..After a couple of draws,once Bowl is fully-even burn;this mixture settles right down.The perique is in the background singing Harmony;through this fine piece of music. I find this mixture smokes best in a small-medium bowl/Do not get in a hurry,"Pease-Blends"tend to be very complex;don't try to seek them out,Let Them Find You AND Enjoy ! :+)

I couldn't believe that I haven't reviewed this yet. It has been a standard in my rotation for the last five years, and I have loved it from the beginning. There are so many reviews, I will just cover some of the things I believe make this blend unique, and worth smoking.

The tin aroma can be a little overwhelming at first. Very strong and rich, overripe fig/raisin/plum scent that grabs you by the nose and shakes you. There's been debate about rum or brandy topping, I believe it's definitely rum. I do let the tin sit for a couple of weeks after opening to tame the smell.

The flavor carries over into the smoke, making this a light aromatic IMO. The perique is very noticeable, but not peppery to me, just fruity. Too much cavendish and burley to consider it a Va/Per, but not enough to dominate. The whole becomes a soft, rich melange of fruit, rum and sweet Va.

It's not as strong as people make it out to be, but if you're sensitive to perique it could turn your head. I like it in the morning, or as an after-lunch smoke. Think I'll have some now-

The reviews of this tobacco just go to prove that there is no accounting for human taste. They run the gamut from "absolutely vile," to "puzzling," to "weird," to someone who named their son after it. For me, this tobacco has a chance of becoming my favorite smoke. And, yes, it is weird when it comes to describing it.

The tin aroma is ambrosial, almost too much so. The perique is noticeable, but so is some kind of flavoring that I don't think anyone has nailed down yet. It's been called brandy and it's been called rum. Whatever it is, it's the main thing I notice when I light it up. But very quickly there is a pheromone of fruitiness. I would have thought that I wouldn't have cared for it, but I really like it. It's not sweet or overripe fruit, just enough to make the virginias really stand out. I think the cavendish contributes to the piquancy too. I don't know enough about how these flavors blend to say any more about it than that it works for me. I don't think it hurts that I've baptized a brand new Rubens Rhodesian from Radice with it, but it's just as good in older pipes.

Smoke this one slowly and contemplatively and you'll end up in nirvana.

Haddo's reputation is such that one can't help being a little underwhelmed. Don't expect as much as some claim for this blend, and it might end up one of your favorites.

Further reflections, 10/05/10:

The topping or casing (I don't know which it is.) varies from tin to tin. Some tins have quite a bit of added flavoring, some very little. In general, the flavor is exactly that of a candy I enjoyed as a child: Brach's Milk Maid Royals Raspberry chews. The flavor stays with you until the last few puffs of the bowl. And the tin note can be somewhat nauseating.

I'm not a fan of aromatics, and this is the most heavily flavored tobacco I keep around. Except for the flavoring, it is a fairly full Virginia Perique blend.

Not Pease's best effort, but an interesting and enjoyable diversion. Three stars only because of the inconsistent levels of added flavoring, and the strongly aromatic nature of the blend will not appeal to all. But for some reason, I keep buying it, and I keep smoking it.

What can one say that others haven't? There's much to love about Haddo's. The flavors changing as the bowl progresses, nutty, chocolate, fruity/hoppy with a ever-present sweetness on the sides of the tongue. All that combined with a nice dose of nicotine make this a favorite.

Well, I can't seem to enjoy Perique. I respect this blend for its quality in that it burns well, smells just fine (both in the tin and whilst smoking it), and the flavor....EXCEPT for the peppery sensation of DOOM. If your a Perique lover, then this blend is for you.

This blend is an enigma to me. Smoked two tins, loved it, bought a pound, hated it. Can't figure this one out. Tins were flavorful, satisfying, and had a great unique taste. Pound was weak, burned very quickly, and had no flavor after a few puffs. Have smoked most Pease blends, and found them top notch. Guess I'll give whats left to the homeless.

Update 4-15-09 Opened my last 2oz tin, and found it again superb. Guess any blender can have a bad batch. Definately try this blend.

Haddo's is a decent hybrid VaPer. I usually like VaPer's with a pinch of Latakia like Piccadilly or a little Izmir like Embarcadero. However Haddo's is nice a nd round and flavorful, lots of good natural tobacco flavor and the ingredients are impeccably blended like all of Pease blends.

Ahhhh, Haddo's! So unique, it's almost impossible to describe. The best I can come with it's a full bodied VaPer with a wonderful and very mild cocoa, plums and figs flavoring, but that description falls short. I could also compare it to Anniversary Kake as they are both cocoa-flavored VaPers, but Haddo's is much more than that. Not necessarily better, just more complex. Its only minor drawback is a mouth drying effect.

If you're into VaPers and you haven't tried this one, you're missing something big. I wish my grandfather would have lived long enough to do it.

This one baffles me. I have smoked it for going on two weeks, one bowl a day. Sunday I rubbed out several coins of Escudo. Escudo is bliss. On the heels of the Escudo, the HD tonight was near-revolting. I thought please make it stop! I cannot finish this. I just bought a pound of this stuff. What will I do with it? The perique rush was disturbing. Then came a wave of very bland cavendish blah, ugh. I thought, VA, burley where are you? And then mid-bowl the HD morphed, or did I? I cannot describe this wonderful, exotic experience in tobacco terms. Aberlour A'Bunadh? Woody, sherry, dried fruit. If Escudo was vaper bliss on Sunday, the HD was a slice of Speyside-like heaven tonight. It has been an hour, and I am still enjoying the finish. Your mileage may vary.

36 years ago about this time of year I returned home from the hospital after having my tonsils removed. I?d not had any solid foods in a few days and my wife had a tray of nuts in the shell in the center of the kitchen table. The walnuts looked especially good so I cracked and shelled three or four of them, chewed until almost liquefied and swallowed. When that mixture of walnuts, saliva, and tannic acid hit the tunnel of hamburger which was my throat at the time I became acquainted with the sensation known as 10 on the pain scale. So why do I mention this? Well everyone has different smell and taste receptors (thank goodness what a boring world if that were not true) and the tin note of ?Haddo?s Delight? is to me as the taste of walnuts to my tongue. Which is not a bad thing at all; I still enjoy walnuts now that my throat has healed quite well now. Ok, maybe it?s more like a baked confection with fruit and walnuts, but it?s the walnuts that yell the loudest for me. So, really nice tin note. First third of the bowl?s flavor is pretty true to the bouquet of the unlit tobacco. Second third, things progress to a deeper level with the Perique announcing its presence in a very nice way, the quality of Perique used in this blend is the best I?ve ever smoked. Home stretch, Virginias, burley, (and Cavendish which I usually steer clear of) meld into one of the most rewarding smokes I?ve ever experienced. The remaining fine white ash is a bit like the cremation of a very complex friend I?m glad I spent time with and one who will be resurrected on a regular basis. And the moral of the review and story is pain comes and goes, and there may not be any connection between past unpleasantries and future rewards. T'is best to live in the moment.

This is a weird blend. There's virginia, burley, cavendish, a rum casing, and enough perique to kill a 12 foot gator. Tastes like chocolate, raisins, and pain.

I like perique, and smoke va/pers almost exclusively, but this is either very macho or totally ridiculous.

I really tried to like Haddo's considering that it is so well rated. But it just turns out that I am more of a Latakia fan than a virginia fan. So I advise that most people take this with a grain of salt. Read my other reviews to see what my other tastes are. If you don't like Latakia, then you might like Haddo's, but for me it just doesn't work. I can't even describe the taste. It simply doesn't set well with me. So, if you really like Latakia, such as Penzance or My MixIure 965, then you might feel as I do, that Haddo's isn't your style. It isn't a bad tobacco, seems to burn to a white ash and is decent in most respects. I just don't like the flavor or aftertaste. I'm hoping my opinion will change by the end of the tin, but I doubt it.

[Edit] It's been a while, but after finishing the tin, I still feel the same about it. It just doesn't work for me, although my tastes have changed a bit from the strict Latakia blends I was smoking.

Tin: Smells chocolate, red wine, ethanolic-brandy(supposdedly rum), light vinegar; not smoky or pungent at all. Supple to dry, not at all sticky. Brown to dark brown-black; not able to differentiate the colors any more specifically. Random cut varies from short and shaggy to long and stringy. Tin date on bottom: 121806, meaning tinned on Dec. 18, 2008.

Packing & Lighting: In a given blend, consistency of cut, and the intricate mixing of the resultant tobaccos, is indicative of quality, re Dunhill's SM. Lights with one match all the way to the bottom.

Taste & Aroma: Top Third: bland taste; vague woodsy aroma tempting one to inhale.

Middle: quite mellow woodsy taste and aroma.

Bottom Third: Light and mellow sweet nutty taste and aroma.

Never smoky or pungent at all.

Nicotine: Full

Room Note: Pleasantly sweet nutty

Overall: For all the hype, I was expecting a bullseye, but got a near miss. I agree with some, that the taste and aroma, becoming noticeable towards the bottom, indicate that burley and cavendish are the main players. Never smoky or pungent, I'm betting that HD does not have much Perique. Compare to McClelland's Blending Perique. HD does not seem to merit all the hype, and because of that , I give it 3.3 stars, recommended.

A nice VA/perq, a bit too vinegary, too moist in the tin, but it has a nice malty balsamic taste that puts it in a league of its own. A nice natural earthy flavor.

EDIT: this ages well and gets less vinegary as time passes, the cavendish and rum pops out more too, hence I up it too four star.

Upon opening this tin I was hit by a strong alcohol like smell and the pungent aroma of the perique. The tobacco was very moist, as I knew it would be, so I laid it out on a plate for a couple hours. Let me just say this mixture is delicious..I had three bowls in a row. It is definitely strong in the nicotine department, which is something I happen to like. Additionally, the perique content is high, something else I like. The components in this blend work so well together that I plan on stocking up as soon as possible. After drying, the tobacco stays lit well and produces a great volume of smoke. My wife said it smelled a little sweet and sour...good nose I think. The flavor was wonderful and no unpleasant aftertaste that you might find on a cased tobacco. The aroma was just excellent and this magical weed relaxed me almost immediately. I feel like this one was made for me...the top note, the copious amounts of perique, the balanced Vas...yum. A real winner..but be mindful, not for the faint of heart...its pretty strong stuff.

Addendum: (3 weeks later) This stuff is still good but after smoking more of it I have to downgrade it since it has lost the flavor of a more robust VAPER.

I first tried this about 6 months ago and waited to try it again before doing a review. I was expecting to like Haddo's based on review by some of the guys who seem to have some of the same favorites that I do but alas, I can't wrap my taste buds around this one.

My taste isn't sophisticated enough to tell you what it is that I don't like, I just know that it totally missed the mark for me.

As much as I love Odyssey and Charing Cross, I don't even like Haddo's Delight enough to finish the tin - I will give it to a friend of mine who does like it.

With so many reviews already written I hesiate to describe my impression of Haddo's. "To each his own" While Virginia is for lovers.........and I love Virginias this one will have to grow on me. This is a quality blend of tobacco...but the blend is not nirvana for me. I find it a little much on the perique, and a little "wanting" in the Va's. The nicoteen is way up there, as my brow is a bit damp as I type this review. Full flavor, easy pack, light, and burn. Good enough that I have cellared some,but for now there are many more that I can't stay away from,ie. Stratford. For now I give it a

Unique and bold, this is one tasty treat.Tin aroma is boozy,taste will keep you interested,the burley to me stands out and it definitely gives it a smooth body,it produces great volumes of smoke,its very gentle on the mouth and tongue,I cant get it to bite.It gurgles a little towards the end but thats no big deal,A good all day smoke for sure.

I really wanted to like this one, having been a fan of the majority of GLP tobaccos.

For me, it is a melange that just doesn't work, and although there is a lot of flavor here, it simply tears the devil out of my tongue.

And this is from a guy who smokes heavy English and flake tobaccos.

Go figure...

I've stuck with this one, and figured out that the enjoyment of this tobacco depends upon the smoking technique. I was going at it too fast, and have found with more deliberate smoking, it is now one of my favorite tobaccos.

This is a fine tobacco with rich,robust flavor.It is slightly moist upon opening.Their is no need for drying or rubbing.Haddo burns fine ash and stays lite.It has good nicotine content.I have noticed others getting hung up on the name of this tobak.Haddo could be called Charles Manson Delight and I would still smoke it as a daily.

The tin aroma of this mix of fine and wide-cut ribbon is simultaneously pungent, earthy, and sweet.

The very large portion of perique, anesthetized and smoothed by the secret processing, defines the fundament of this blend, and the proprietary blending and processing allows the perique to fill this function without driving the flavor to extremes. And though a fleeting note of fine white burley, virginia, or black cavendish may briefly manifest, the integration and homogeneity of this blend precludes analysis. There is a slight aromatic signature of rum, primarily in the tin aroma, which tends to fade quickly with some time in the cellar. There is no fearing the loss of this aroma, as the contribution of the rum lies, primarily, in its conditioning effect upon the leaf.

An iconic blend, Haddo's Delight emotes the aura of smoking straight perique without the associated unpleasantries. Never stinting on the flavor, it, nonetheless, miraculously manages an all-day character. Aging further deepens its mellowness. This went well in a chamber of any gauge.

I've been smoking a few of Greg Pease's blends for the past year. His Berbary Coast is one of my three favorite blends. I like Stratford and few others that I have tried. I love perique and these days Pease blends are the way to go for Perique. He seems to be a bit more liberal with it than other blenders who use it. I like that. This week I purchased some Haddo's and Westminster. While Westminster is just about the best english blend I've ever tried, Haddo's left me a little disappointed. But just a little. It's a great blend in its own right. What left me wanting was its similarity to Barbary Coast. To me, Haddo's seems to be not much more than Barbary Coast with its measures of burley and Vrginia tobaccos reversed. Both of them smell very similar in the tin and the taste isn't different enough for me to merit keeping both blends on hand in my cabinet. I prefer Burley to Virginia because of its nutty flavor. Its this nuttiness that Haddo's lacks that keeps it a notch below Barbary Coast for me. The perique level is obviously upped in Haddo's Delight. But Barbary Coast has a good measure of the condiment too. I would never advise anyone against trying Haddo's Delight. It is a delicious and complex tobacco, but I don't believe I'll buy more of it as long as Barbary Coast is still available.

Haddo's Delight is a stout and full mixture, as strong as some English blends. Perique is the main show instead of latakia in this blend. Warning, if you don't like the taste of Perique, don't smoke this tobacco.

The tin aroma is wonderful. The best I think I ever smelled in a tobacco. Figs and raisins with a backround of cocoa. I also read that Pease said he also has a touch of rum in this blend, and I agree. This VA, burley perique blend smokes smooth and cool with full flavor. Also has a very pleasant room note. Prior to trying Haddo's Delight, Bayou Night by C&D was my favorite perique tobacco.

Haddo's Delight seems to be quite the controversial tobacco. I am giving it four stars because when it is "on" it is "killer."

It isn't on all the time though. I believe Haddo's is very sensitive to moisture level in the tin. The first time I tried it, it knocked me out with the pleasant nose bite, strength, tin aroma and the faint taste of cocoa. I immediately purchased another half dozen tins and some bulk tins.

Upon opening subsequent tins, I thought that the blend did not taste the same. But 30 days or so after the initial opening, it would settle down considerably. I think it tastes best slightly on the dry side. Some reviewers complain that C&D and Pease tobaccos are inconsistently blended, so maybe that is an issue.

I am waiting to see how well this ages. It could turn out to be sublime with five or so years of age. I also look forward to trying it in some larger pipes.

It has all been said so my review is short. After reading so many reviews about what a Perique bomb this is, I was surprised how subtle the Perique presence was to me. After a few tins, I finally started tasting the most wonderful spectrum of flavors once my pipes became well seasoned with it and my tins got age on them. Pipes seasoned with Haddo's and aged tins really made the difference for me. At six months it's awesome, at a year sublime. I'm really looking forward to my eight ounce tins I've put away hitting the three year mark.

Too many tobaccos not really merging in together. The tin aroma is short of harassing my senses because it is simply overwhelming...with the aroma of Perique.

The long cut leaves are easy to pack and decently easy to light up.

After half a bowl, I was not certain that I liked it. I decided to let the tin dry out some time, to let the tobacco mellow down and attenuate.

After 4 pipefuls, Haddo's delight was not a delight to me, and I have been a pipe smoker for many years. Too much Perique...

Not a blend which would favor creativity or encourage a quiet, contemplative state.

It is the first time that I smoke such a spicy tobacco and I got excited. Haddo is a mix of Virginia?s various tobaccos, with a very strong dose of perique. Black Cavendish and little burley, provide plenitude, the body, and additional strength. Finally, the mix has a light perfume of cocoa and dry fruits. The flavor is complete in the palate, spicy but a bit bitter, in harmony with flavors of figs and grapes. A marvelous mix for the lover perique. It burns a lot, my throat.

Reviewing tobacco mixtures can be a very challenging effort. HD is a very strong in the nicotine sense, so strong i can't smoke more than a half bowl before my head gets the swimmers. It has a very full feel in the mouth and fantastic flavour that builds until the very end. This one of Greg's finest achievements and does not fit into a tidy little niche, like a Burley mixture or a VAPER (that is truly dumb tobacco slang. My great grandmother had the vapers). It is in a class of its own and should not be compared to a Virgina-Perique mixture like Three Nuns or McClelland 2015. Comparing Haddo's to a Burley blend or a VA-Perique and being dissatisfied is like comparing a Ferrari F40 to a Silverado and concluding the Silverado is a much better vehicle because is has a much higher towing capacity. That is what makes tobacco reviewing a challenge. I have a very low tolerance for nicotine, but i am not going to downgrade this fine mixture because of that. Before i get dizzy, this is one the finest full flavoured mixtures i have smoked from the standpoint of burning cool and dry, and having a very complex, engaging flavour unlike any other mixture. Will I buy it again? Nope, too much nicotine. Do i think it is one of the best mixtures for those who tolerate nicotine and prefer a very full bodied and flavoured complex smoke, absolutely. Give it an honest 2 ounces to try, but don't compare it to something it is not. It is better!

This is a classic, as so many other reviewers have pointed out --a benchmark for what a great tobacco blend can be. This is not really a VA/Per, as the burley and canvendish are as obvious as the virginias or perique. What Pease has managed to do is combine these leafs in such a way as to produce a 100 percent original flavor, something that doesn't even remind me of anything else. It's sweet, tangy, and rich with countless subtle undertones (chocolate, honey) that wax and wane as the bowl progresses. This blend is clearly topped with something, and I think it's also likely been stoved somewhere in the blending process (but that's just a guess). Three caveats here, for those who've not tried this one yet. First, make sure you allow it to age for at least one year before smoking. I've never come across a blend that is so dramatically affected by age, and you probably won't enjoy it if you open it too quickly. Second, this one can bite your tongue, so smoke it slowly. Third, there's a lot of nicotine in this blend, enough to make you sick if you rush it. HIGHLY recommended

I've become a huge fan of VAper's, of late, and so it was only a matter of time before I'd end up trying a tin of this legendary baccy from my favorite blender. In all my years of experience with this hobby, I've never found a tobacco more puzzling than this one. It is both wonderful and awful, and defies all my attempts to solidify an opinion. I was determined to make up my mind before posting a review, but maybe the bi-polarity of my impressions will give readers a richer picture than I could muster otherwise.

Upon first lighting this stuff, I inevitably want to abandon the bowl for something else. The cavendish (which I loathe) jumps right out at me, characteristically bitter, as if perfume has been sprayed directly onto my tongue. But I must say that I like this far better than any other cavendish-laden baccy I've ever had the displeasure of puffing upon. I think anyone with a fondness for cavendish should immediately pick up a few tins of this stuff, in order to broaden their horizons.

The presence of my least-favorite condiment will keep me from recommending this stuff highly. Still, this blend is an education. There are moments mid-bowl that lift, even me, to ecstatic heights; combinations of wonderment unlike any I've found elsewhere. So, two stars would be entirely unjust. But for now, three will have to do.

I won't give up on this blend. The tin I'm currently consuming is only about a year and a half old. Maybe after Haddo's and I have matured for a few more years we'll be able to get along more amiably. Until then, I'll stick with Fillmore and Cairo, which are both delicious in their youth.

This VAPER blend has a bit of a twist. I like smoking this one in an aromatic pipe because of the casing. There is quite a bit of chocolate flavor in this, also maybe fig or another fruit. The thing that really surprised me about this was how well these different flavors marry with the Perique. The sweet and spicy together is really a surprise, I understand Virginia tobaccos are by nature sweet but the artificial flavorings add a really interesting twist. The Cavendish and burley add some real body to make this a really full smoke. That makes this tobacco a must try for anyone who wants to add a bit of variety to their life. Please what ever you do let this one dry out for a few days it makes it much better.

Tin aroma is wonderful. Needs lots of drying out to smoke properly. Taste and smoke aroma are just kind of nasty. Leaves my throat feeling a little funny too. I did put most of my 8 ounce tin up for storage so we'll see in about 10 years how it does but right now I just can't see getting more.

As a confirmed Latakia "English" blend nut, I was intrigued by reviews of this blend enough to try it. It has the fruity characteristics of an aromatic, but doesn't seem to result in the usual goo at the bottom of the bowl. The scent lingers on clothes or (in my case, moustache), but it's a pleasant diversion from my usual favorites (Old Lodge, Squadron Leader).

Tin aroma- I really like the aroma from this I get a strong berry-wine scent from it on first open. While packing the bowl, I begin to get a hint of something like figs, but the tobacco feel is very nice, and packs fairly well for me. I am a little worried, as for how strong smelling this is I wonder if it will be too cloying of a taste?

First Light- It took a few tries to get this lit, but I was surprised by the taste once it was lit. The heavy fruit smell really sits in the background as a taste. Off the bat this is much less aromatic then I was imagining, much more of the tobacco flavors are on display, then I thought this would be providing.

Mid Bowl- this blend really starts to shine about mid bowl for me. I start to get some of the deeper, chocolaty tastes from it, I find that I really have to remember to slow down, as I'm enjoying the taste enough that I start to puff like crazy.

end- I ended up putting this down fo a little bit to let it cool down. This ended roughly as it was at midpoint. I like this, I could see it making it into my regular rotation; it's not one I couldn't live without, but I could see going through a tin every few months.

Mr. Pease should change this to SPECKCHASERS DELIGHT.A fine weed with a menagerie of flavors.The perique wafts in and out tingling and teasing the taste buds,while the virginia and burley anchor this blend.Black Cavendish I see it in the blend but have yet to really figure out its place,or how to describe it.All in all each blends well delivering a fantastic taste.

Burns well in a medium size bowl,larger bowls may have to be sopped slitely with a pipe cleaner.Lights easily with minimum relighting,alot of this I find depends on the cake in the bowl.

All else that I can say is highly recommended,fine taste.

Update: Being your basic skinflint, I continue to try my tin of Haddo's Delight in various pipes. I have a very cheap tiny pipe I once got in a batch order from Finck's of San Antonio.. one of three that were just awful pipes until I drilled them out to draw easier... Tried the Haddo's in one of these and found a pretty good smoke! I'll dedicate this pipe to that blend and since it's so small I'm sure the tin will last 6 months or so :) I'll upgrade my rating to medium good. I guess the old addage is true that each pipe has it's favorite tobaccos! Just strange though that it's so awful in pipes I use to enjoy VA/Per's of all kinds. A strange world.

I?m a heavy smoker and do inhale lightly. I enjoy a good nicotine buzz occasionally, though I much prefer a delicious blend that makes me seek out the layers in taste and scent. Haddo?s gives me the buzz, but not much more. There is nothing refined in this blend that I can find. I do smoke a lot of perique blends, so that?s not the problem? there?s just something harsh and nasty about this one? sorry. Reminds me of a re-lit cigar.

I much prefer Greg?s Fillmore to this, though that is still not my favorite, overshadowed by Solani 633 and Russ Ouellette?s Anniversary Kake. I also buy Louisiana Red and Sunza Bitches in bulk, but only hit a bowl of one of these every day or so.

I?ve tried the Haddo?s in several of my nicer perique-dedicated pipes with no change in harshness and I?ve tried various packing techniques (the cut is long, thin and very springy, making it difficult to settle to to bottom of the bowl without gouging it down with my finger).

If you?re used to perique-spiced Virginias, you might try this? many, many people seem to really like it, but it?s certainly not for me. The Solani 633 Virginia Flake with Perique is the perfect trip, burning beautifully and with all sorts of flavors popping up as well as mysterious scents hitting my nose...and I still get my nicotine buzz.

Packs a wallop! Generally, this Burley-based mixture is strong for me, but I can handle it once in a blue moon.

It's an excellent concoction that calls to mind midwinter spice foods, like a Christmas fruitcake (the good kind, not the kind you mail to your aunt this year and she mails back next year) or a mincemeat spice pie. But it's a lot less sweet than those foods. And it's got a "salty" undertone, too, which the manufacturer labels as "intriguingly piquant" but which I'd call nearly tangy. I swear there's some Oriental in this tobacco, but the tin label claims not.

I find this blend to be exactly as advertised - quality Virginias, Burley that you can both taste and sense, if that makes sense, a touch of perique that comes and goes, and the nutty sweetness of the Black Cavendish. Like many VA blends, I find that this can't be puffed too quickly. I need to sip this slowly, as while it doesn't exactly bite like aromatics do, it's definitely different than the English blends that I usually favor. For as full-bodied a taster as this is, the aroma is quite pleasant...spicy and rich. To me, this is an occasional smoke, not an every-day blend. Having said that, I know that a good number who love this kind of a blend will enjoy this a lot. It's a typical Greg Pease blending; subtle at times, and complex throughout. My 3 star rating isn't because this disappoints in delivering what it has been set out to do. Vaper lovers should eat this stuff for lunch! But, if I feel like a VA, I'll go to Montgomery more often that this. I find this stronger than even some of Greg's latakia blends, and if I feel like milder, this isn't it! This should age beautifully.

Update: A couple of months later, some more time to dry out, and this just seems to get better each time I try it. Definitely a real pleasing VaPer. I find it works best in a larger bowl. Those who love billows of smoke will love this one!

I realize that I've given virtually every tobacco I've reviewed high ratings. Well, frankly, I know what I like and pursue that stuff with zeal.

Though more of a latakia lover, perique is another dear friend.

I bought a can of Haddo's back in August 2006 from my local tobacconist. It was stamped 6/20/06. I held off on smoking it until January.

Upon opening... whoah!!! What a fragrance... chocolate, rum, cherries... brings back memories of some tobacco my uncle smoked when I was a small child.

I can detect the black cavendish and here it is used sparingly, as it should be. I cannot, however, detect the burley. I can visually, but in the taste and aroma, I can't. I'm not a burley hater by any means, but I am typically indifferent.

The VAs and periques, though, are superb. This smoke along with Fillmore has the correct amount of perique. I'll always keep these two on hand for those times I need a dose of the Louisiana manna.

Bought a tin of Haddo's close to a year ago on the recomendation of a trusted tobacconist. I enjoy virginias and virginias with perique, so I thought I was going to in for a treat. The tin aroma was great if a little fruity, and the tobacco was quite moister than I am used to. So I gave this a shot and was not very impressed , infact it sat in my tin area for close to a year with out any more smoked of it. About a week ago I picked this one up again for smoking, and what a difference. I don't know wether it was too moist or if it need to stew in the tin for a litte while longer, but it is now in my top five favorites, and have a few more tins on order.

St. Augustine published his Retractations. Ludwig Wittgenstein change philosophical course mid-life. If such great minds could publicly demur on their own doctrinal and philosophical fineries, than it is the least I can do with a matter of personal appreciation.

Perversely, I purchased a tin of Haddo?s Delight by GL Pease earlier this year after having demoted it a star on TR. I thought that perhaps if I kept it several years, it might settle down and show its potential more than just its power. But then Fillmore came along and ruined the plan.

I wanted to compare Fillmore to Haddo?s to Telegraph Hill. Hence, against telos, I opened the Haddo?s reserved for aging. With ten months on the tinned contents, I was pleasantly surprised at just how mouthwatering (more on this later) this is. The missing complexity from my first tin appeared in my second and the team of ingredients worked together.

I have never smoked a blend providing such smoke volume from gentle puffing (Irish Oak is close). My mouth was coated with thick, chewy, and rich confection. Smooth and fairly cool, after a three vesta start, HD is just a wonderful concoction. The briar workhorse was no worse for the wear after burning HD (a pipe cleaner is handy while smoking HD) and the ash produced: Fluffy white.

Another surprise was my initial missing of the topping laced over HD. While the chocolate verve can be somewhat explained by the perique and air-cured leaf, an alcoholic rum raisin (?) aroma says ?Topped.? Of course, just as I have never encountered an opportunity I couldn't miss, I could be dead wrong on the "topping question": Does he or doesn't he?

My non-smoking wife and I took turns whiffing the freshly opened tin, as we have also together enjoyed Barbary Coast, Royal Jersey Perique, and aromatics Carole blends at Pipeworks & Wilke.

There is something unique about Pease?s non-latakia blends for me, in that all I have tried thus far make it necessary that I frequently expectorate during a bowlful. Those suffering from dry mouth might try HD as a jump start for the salivary function.

Haddo?s in comparison to Fillmore or Telegraph Hill: There is a family resemblance, sans fear of duplication. Haddo?s physically impacts me more than either TH or Fillmore, though I think Fillmore has more perique than both. Cumberland, which I assume has less perique than HD, Fillmore or TH, destroyed me 9 out of 10 times I have smoked it (Kentucky leaf?).

All have nice complexity and differ in richness (with TH flattening after mid-bowl and having more harsh qualities). It is hard to think of any widely known blender making so many yummy blends with perique as does Greg Pease.

When I popped the top to this tin the aroma made me think of a nicee hot rum toddy on a cool autumn evening. I also was very pleased with the eye appeal of this weed, dark and light browns to smokey reds and yellows.

Packing this blend was rather straight forward due to the types of cuts, broken flake to ribbon to almost curly cut(from my understanding this is a trademark of Pease Tobaccos). The light up was nice and rich. Flavors ranging from dark sun dried fruits to sweet rum. It has a nice degree of complexity for an aromatic and I like that in a tobacco. You can enjoy this weed around most people and not offend. Toward the next third of the bowl ahh the Perique chimes in nicely giving way to a subtle nutty sweetness. At this stage of the game my nic-addiction was definitely satisfied. The finish was quite deep and rich as well still carrying the overtones of perique with the satisfying nutty sweetness of Virginia. The knock out only left me with a pile of ash and a smile!

I definitely rate this tobacco among the top as far as aromatics go. I wouldn't smoke it all day but sure will put it in my after steak dinner line up. Dark Lord, War Lord who cares he makes some very satisfying tobacco blends. A little pricey but well worth it! Hats off to G.L. Pease.

Haddo's is true enjoyment. The can bouquet, taste, and room note all hint at the same robust 'figs and raisins' flavor with a little Perique tartness. The perique never oversteps its bounds in this mixture. If that is the grail you seek, look no further.

For me, no evening is complete w/o Haddo's but it is not the most consistent product from the get go. I opened the 1st can and this stuff was wetter than Captain Black. 2nd can smoked was only slightly less wet. It's quality stuff, but needs air. I put in a tobacco jar with a loose fitting lid for a week.

Once the mositure issue is dealt with, this weed won't work in a little 3/4" size 4. A 6 is best IMHO. Lots of orange glow and lot of smoke afforded by a big pipe works best.

I won't write poetry about Haddo's, but I like it so much that there are 3 size 6 Cherrywood shaped sitters on my rack devoted to this blend to keep a wide, dry pipe in the rotation each night.

Haddo's Delight is by all means a very nice blend. I thoroughly enjoyed it but it doesn't quite meet the glory of Odyssey. Still I must agree that this is a fine blend.

Wow! What an interesting blend. It's like nothing I've ever had. The flavors are complex and kalaidoscopic, with no two bowlsful exactly the same. Like some other reviwers, Haddo's left me a bit nauseous after the first smoke, yet it was oddly compelling and I kept coming back for more; just be careful not to inhale.

On opening the tin you get a rich aroma of dried fruit -- apricot, fig, raisin, prune -- with a slightly acid tang and a hint of fermentation. It smells like a winter dessert and the port to go with it. The leaf is just a bit damp and benefits from a short period of drying; not too long, though, or some of the essence dissipates. I think it does best in a medium to large bowl, just like a big English blend. In fact, Haddo's has all the power and complexity of a really good English in a blend that is, at heart, a VA/PER.

Cavendish predominates at first lighting, but matters quickly become more complex. Going down the bowl, a fruity tang on the back of the tongue provides continuity as other flavors come and go: mostly Virginias of various stripes, some sweet, others acid. The burley is way in the background, and not especially nutty; the perique grows more pronounced as you smoke. The fruit fades away in the last third, at which point it's important to slow down or the smoke can turn bitter.

There have been times when Haddo's has been as good a smoke as I've ever had; others when I've wondered what I did wrong. But this is a one of the great ones, literally in a class by itself: there's nothing else like it so far as I know. Brilliant.
