Let me start by stating that I personally do not like strongly aromatic tobaccos. From this, you can understand that it might be a favorite among pipe smokers who love aromatics and want to experience their intense scent. I prefer more subtle, underlying aromas. Therefore, I generally hate vanilla-dominant tobaccos.
When I got this tobacco, I was new to this place and had smoked almost no tobaccos other than Captain Black and WO Larsen. So this tobacco coincided with a period when I bought every tobacco I could find. If I had encountered it now, I probably wouldn’t have bought it. Don’t get me wrong, the tobacco is not of poor quality; but it’s not like Bosphorus’s Plumcake or Blueberry Cake tobaccos that appeal to me. In fact, Blueberry Cake might be the only one I like among these three, because of its refreshing aroma.
Firstly, this tobacco requires tight packing. With tight packing, it burns better and delivers a much better aroma performance. Moreover, its aroma is much better than those of many other brands. For example, Winslow No:2, which I reviewed before, is not even comparable to this tobacco. If the aroma of this tobacco were lighter, its rating could probably be a four; but this tobacco was not produced for that purpose. It has its own target audience, and I’m sure it’s very successful for them. If I had the same tastes, it would have been very successful for me too. I belong more to the group that likes Navy Flake and 2016’s Value Flake.
In short, it is a very successful tobacco for those who love aromatic tobaccos; but since I don’t like tobaccos where the aroma is dominant, it won’t be a tobacco I consume again.
