Oriental forward with mild to medium dose of Latakia. Smooth, cool and complex. Stands on its own with a unique interplay of tobaccos. Smokes slowly without any bite down to a white ash and little wetness. Prefer a wider bowl for fuller mix of tobaccos.

Dragon’s Drool

Blend notes: “Dragon’s Drool is the second offering of the Muddled Earth series of six boutique pipe tobacco blends from Tres Cahones Tobacco. Dragon’s Drool bcontains Cyprian Latakia, Dark-fired Kentucky, toasted Oriental, toasted Burley, toasted Virginia, and Perique.”

Dragon’s Drool is a sweet, medium-bodied English. There is an evident smoky, woody, earthy Latakia at the start of the bowl — and it continues to exert its influence. Dark-fired Kentucky adds a different kind of smokiness and deep structure. The Burley (toasted, not steamed or pressed) builds on the Kentucky to provide contextual body. The Orientals and the Virginias are toasted as well and bring, in turn, subdued spice and subdued sweetness. Sour Perique ties up the package. No propylene glycol is used.

This all leads to a medium level, spicy, woody, floral taste profile. The ever-present Latakia slides off the tongue into the spice and the sourness. Honestly, with every other puff, I swish the mouth to get a bit more of the taste because it’s so darn tasty.

Dragon’s Drool is both excellent and, well, fun to smoke.

4 out of 4 stars.
