I am fairly new to VaPers and was trying new blends like crazy. I figured I hadn't tried one, excepting The Beast which hardly qualifies. Soo I bought a few and really enjoyed them. I was making my almost monthly trip to Boswell's Alexandria store and knew he made Private Stock. I got some while I was there. As soon as I got in my car I stuffed my nose in the bag and got that familiar cow manure scent! None of my other VaPers I've tried had it and I knew I'd like it right then and there. The Wizard of Bos uses way more perique in PS than any of the other VaPers I've tried. So much deeper and richer flavor. It may be considered a perique blend by some rather than a traditional VaPer. I've liked all of them and each has its own merits. PS's merit is an abundance of rich, farmy, earthy, dark fruity, plummy, chocolatey perique. If you like perique, get some Private Stock. If you don't prefer that type of flavor then steer clear. But I sure do like it. The Virginia's do offer their share of stewy fruit flavor and dont bite. It lites up easily and burns steady throughout. There's enough nic to know it's there but not enough to leave earth's atmosphere. The flavor is delicious and strong enough to give the strong flavor lovers something to do, while the milder tobacco lovers can enjoy this on those "change it up" days. This unique blend gets 4 stars from me.

It sat in the jar for quite some time and the ‘tin/jar note’ didn’t tell me anything for some time, until recently when it started delivering some sweet and berry notes.

The ready rubbed cut is in small pieces, at least in my sample.

The taste from the first bowls came with some sweetness and a bit of spice, then came some notes of hay, black tea, licorice, oranges/orange peel, berries and dark fruit. However, the last bowl presented some sweetness, honey, lemon, spice.

This seems to have a casing/topping. Does it? Yes, it does, in my opinion. I don’t know what other people think but it’s something there. Not a lot, just something subtle. It has some berry notes, dark fruit, licorice. At first this seemed to have more casing/topping but now it seems to have mellowed down a note, however it still seems to have a slight amount of added flavoring. I may be wrong, I don’t know.

Anyway, the first bowls seemed a bit dull, but the last one was better (for some reason I don’t know). As you progress, the spice gets a bit more intense. At times, it becomes just bready with a little spice and that’s all, quite plain, especially by the end of the bowl. Actually by the end of the bowl it becomes similar to Orlik Golden Sliced. In what way? Well, in my opinion Orlik’s Golden Sliced is quite a plain tobacco, with bready and hay notes with no spice whatsoever. This one is becoming very similar, only that unlike Orlik Golden Sliced, this has some spice.

The sweetness changes, from the honey notes to some melted sugar or molasses. The retrohale is not very spicy, it’s just tingling a bit.

By the middle of the bowl it mellows down, becomes spicier, the sweetness is almost gone and it’s starting to have some hay notes, some bready notes and it’s starting to taste like Orlik Golden Sliced, only that this one actually has spice (yeah, I’m repeating myself). The topping goes away as well, so this is becoming quite plain. Bready, hay notes, grassy... an ok’ish virginia with some perique spice and that’s it.

Final thoughts... it’s a good blend, it’s decent. There are many other great VaPers out there, but this tastes quite common. So, would I buy another tin? No. I’d go for some new experiences or back to the VaPers that really impressed me.

Something that really pleased me is the way it burns. For a virginia blend, it burns amazing. It doesn’t bite, it doesn’t get hot and it keeps burning without going out, you can smoke easily for one hour and even more, without relighting it.

Room note is pleasant, it’s not something special, it is a bit plain.

With all due respect to Boswell, this is nothing special. Some people might love it. For me, it’s just ok. This is not highly recommended, but I would recommend it, just for the sake of trying it. I’m not sure how much it costs, I know it’s not easy to get it, but if you have the opportunity to get it at a good price, get it, it’s a good smoke.
