The Storyteller’s Pipe Shop Sweet Galenas

(3.00)
One of three new pipe tobacco house blends we're introducing, Sweet Galenas is the result of a collaborative effort to produce a match of the orginial Tewksbury Hobbit's Weed with a smoother balance of flavor and reduced risk of bite. "Sweet Galenas" is the name for pipe tobacco used by the Númenóreans (Dúnedain), an ancient race of men, in J.R.R. Tolkein's The Hobbit/LOTR series. A wizardly blend of sweet Black Cavendish, quality Burleys, and premium Virginias with an Elven kiss of flavoring that produces a magical smoke that would make any Hobbit proud. Sweet Galenas is mild to medium in strength and taste with delicious flavor from start to finish. Channel your inner Tolkein with a bowl of Sweet Galenas in your favorite churchwarden or long-stem pipe!

So let me just state that if you find your jollies by burying your face on a long, tall, deep box of cordial candies, then this week’s entry might just be your express ticket to sweetly honed piping ecstasy. Coming around one more time is a sweetie-toothed confection from the small B&M The Story Teller’s Pipe. Grab that faithful long pipe for I present for thoughtful indulgence Sweet Galenas, a tastefully prepared match to the fabled Tewksbury Hobbit’s Weed.

This Tolkien inspired aromatic combines a tasty affair of ample Black Cavendish, upright Burley, and assorted Virginian leaf. These expressively pitch-dark ribbon-cut tobaccos are imaginatively lacquered with colorful casting of delectable top-coatings including chocolate/cocoa, cherry, warming booze, modest vanilla, embracing walnut, and perhaps a few other choice seasonings I’m thinking.

To smell the pouch is much like opening a fresh package of Brach’s Cordial Cherries as the immediate candied fragrance springs graciously to attention. Luscious dark chocolate, a gentle fruity whispering, vanilla nut, and hinting of grainy alcohol spice dominate the nose as the native constituents move meekly underneath adding a bit of citrusy tart and essential seasoned wood. Of note, there is a degree of excessive moisture that needs sorted out before partaking in this beaming mixture.

As a classic aromatic, mild strength Sweet Galenas’ additive flavorings register with medium intensity on the top edge the forward taste complex. Although not overbearing in nature, these flavorsome enhancements do occupy considerably more weighting during the initial half-bowl. With progression, however, their intensity tends to dissipate gradually as the tobacco’s persona transitions to a generally sweetened push from a melding of the resident native leaves.

With the mentioned coatings the foremost feature plays out as a spirited chocolate-cherry cordial impression. Characteristically dark and milky, the bittersweet chocolate/cocoa influence adds an appealing note of sugary delight much like those little silky smooth Dove Holiday Brownie Batter candy squares. A reserved cherry hinges with an even temper, neither invasive nor gawdy to any degree. The latter projects a tart sweet berry essence that combines splendidly with a cheerful but modest alcohol note and a bit of gentle creamed vanilla.

From my reaction, this subtle boozy quality exemplifies one that I would deem as quite festive. Considering the tame remarking the cherry note and given the superior manner by which fuses with the spirit essence, it makes me wonder if in fact the true source of both is an application of a cherry liqueur or fruited brandy perhaps. Pure speculation on my part.

As to colorizing accents, Sweet Galenas’s standard profile is ornamented by a range of complementing highlights. Namely, their representation is demonstrated by the influences of strong molasses, brown sugar, a sugary cinnamon kick, softly buttered tart, raisin, and a prevailing note of cozy sweetened walnut. Recognition of all these nuances as the circulate in tasteful cavorting pattern endows added liveliness to the smoking adventure. Again, this conditional arrangement stands true primarily for the initial portion of the bowl.

With respect to the natural tobaccos, I want to say that the Bright dominant Virginia and Burley run fairly even in presence but do tend to tussle for dominance at times. Working together, they fill the middle-bottom spectrum quite neatly as a finishing remark from the Cavendish enters selectively from the rear. One you could argue the fact that there is some degree of interesting movement caused by the strains. As such, the mixture bolsters a pleasantry of feel while building some perceivable depth and charisma within the overall registration.

Qualifying these native leaves, the flavor of the base Burley commonly bestows a sweeter blanched almond note with a pass of peacefully rendered sourness. It tends to be penciled with an augmented marking of native cocoa and sincere earthiness. As for the crucial Virginian character it forms as a very lemony citrus grassed Bright note propagating widely. Darkened of their seasoning is aided by traces of staunch Red woodiness and stoned fruit as they pop with occasional accord texturizing the ultimate savor. Finally, and quite simply, the Black Cavendish brings a dullish wood trait dirtied by rich soiling and charred zest. An interesting and robust spread by any reasonable accounting.

Producing plentiful whisps of lovely smoke, the blend projects a pleasing roomed aroma that is inherently sweet and creamy with an adornment of fruity tart. This heavenly perfumed notation rides upon a foundation of classically scented native leaf richness. No bite to speak of and generally positive observations regarding the mechanical burn properties. And finally, the blend’s texture is rather smooth and well-balanced when all is said and done.

Although Sweet Galenas may not be a Christmas mixture, per say, I make the pitch that it kind of follows along with the holiday motif. Presenting a festive aromatic experience of seasonal centric flavorings, Sweet Galenas appends well with the best holiday ambience. What is more synonymous with the coming of Santa than cordial cherries may I ask.

On a closing note of thankfulness, aha, The Story Teller’s offering served me soothingly as the finishing dessert to a devilish course of Italian Fra Shrimp Diavolo. Impressive blending efforts from the smaller guy once again, bottom-line. Reach out and support their cause by giving Sweet Galenas a fair burn in your very own churchwarden … or briar… or cob for that matter. You might find that you agree. 2.9 Pipes.
