Cornell & Diehl Evergreen
(3.33)
Cornell & Diehl's Wintertime Reserve: Evergreen is a special VaPer comprised of stoved and unstoved red Virginias, unsweetened black cavendish, and a whisper of perique. Pressed and sliced into delicate flakes. A subtle, nuanced, and contemplative smoke.
Notes: A special, seasonal extension of the Small Batch line, all four Wintertime Reserve blends are crafted by hand, one small batch at a time, from recipes specially selected by head blender Jeremy Reeves. From a fragrant aromatic to English and Virginia staples, all these blends are pressed and cut into either flakes or old-fashioned crumble cakes, and packaged in special, festive tin art.

Cornell & Diehl - Evergreen (Wintertime Reserve).
It isn't a solid flake but rather well-broken. My blend had great hydration upon opening, and as expected it's brown in colour with specks of black. The smell? Mainly of Virginia.
A very tasty VaPer; that would do as a review, in short!! The fruity red Virginias account for the leading taste, with an ample spiciness from the Perique; the 'whisper' seems to be of the sharper, spicy, variety rather than the plummy kind. The black Cavendish provides a creaminess which compliments the sweet VA's excellently! After a whole day of smoking this I've noticed no bite. The temperature of the smoke's low.
Nicotine; just below medium. Room-note: nice enough.
Evergreen? A solid four stars:
Highly recommended.

The red Virginia provides a lot of tangy ripe dark fruit, earth, wood, bread, some sugar, light tart and tangy citrus, grass, and slight floralness, along with a pinch of spice and bare essence of vinegar. It is the lead component. The sugary, earthy, woody, stewed dark fruity, bready stoved red Virginias are secondary players. The effect of the spicy, very plumy, lightly raisiny, earthy, woody perique is in-between the stoved Va. and being a condiment. The creamy, sugary black cavendish tames many of the rough edges. The strength and nic-hit are a couple of steps past the center of mild to medium. The taste is medium. Won’t bite or get harsh. Well balanced, the easily broken apart flakes creates a cool, clean and slight slow burning experience. The very consistent sweet and mildly spicy flavor extends to the lightly lingering, pleasant after taste, and room note. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires a couple more than an average number of relights. Can be an all day smoke. Three and a half stars out of four.

I received this blend for free as a Christmas Gift alongside one of the new Peterson Short pipes. It's a broken flake, the first of these I've ever had the joy of smoking. I'm partial to VaPer and perique heavy English blends. I found it packed nicely into the Peterson's small bowl and smoked fairly evenly after a few attempts at lighting. The Virginias were rich and creamy with the added sweetness of the cavendish really pairing nicely with the smoky perique. I'm a big fan of this and I hope they release it next year. I will note that I did get a bit of tongue bite, which I typically only get from cavendish blends, but fairly mildly. On the whole, I would suggest this tobacco for those who need something nice for a cold-weather treat. I find it pairs well with black tea.
