Murray Sons & Co, Ltd Murrays Mellow Mixture

(3.50)
A perfect mixture of light and dark leaf with a slight latakia 'nose'. A good beginners tobacco containing latakia.
Notes: A bit of history: Murray and Sons were founded in Belfast in 1810, were purchased by Carreras Rothman in 1953, and were closed down by then owners BAT in early 2005 with the loss of 63 jobs.

Why is it that when I discover a new tobacco I like, it is not available in the USA? Oh well....

Murray's Mellow Mixture is as fine an afternoon and evening smoke (for me) as I have ever enjoyed. Light on the Latakia, yet just enough to keep the various Virginia leaves in the blend from totally dominating.

I suspect there is some sort of light topping in this blend because the taste and room note seemed just a bit sweeter than what one would expect from a straight Latakia/Virginia combination.

You will need to go to one of the UK websites to access this wonderful tobacco. It is not any more expensive than a quality USA sold tin, but the shipping charge will lower the price/taste ratio just a notch or two. Absolutely delightful weed, and worth every penny in my estimation.

A lovely blend- I got a tin I suspect to be at least 7 years old. Pleasantly smokey, the latakia has a really resiny quality to it, very forest like. Just a hint of that yeasty, fermented aroma I know from the Dunhill mixtures, with various musty, spicey odours coming from the orientals (or if it is just latakia and VA, it must be the Latakia, whuch I doubt). The Virginia is very high quality, very sweet and full, and quite strong. Gives the whole blend quite a noticable (but very pleasant) sweetness unlike most other English mixtures.

Delicious stuff- mild enough just to puff away on, but if you sit down just to enjoy a bowl of it in a comfy chair, you certainly won't get bored- the flavour is very complex and develops throughout the bowl.

Lights easy peasy, burns even and cool, and smells lovely. A little akin to Early Morning Pipe, but not as sharp. Burns to the last shred- there is no dottle. I wish I had another tin of this...

Milder than Dunhill Standard Mixture Mild (now called Mellow), but with broadly the same stucture, the same virtues, but a little less nicotine. Early Morning Pipe may be a good substitute. (I am relying on memory, not having smoked EMP for some time.)

I suppose this is more a lament than a review. I am down to about two bowlfuls of this wonderful mixture. And with the imminent demise of Murrays, I suppose this will be my last. It was difficult enough to buy, having to purchase it from my favorite UK tobacconist. Now, with the exchange rate, the shipping charges, and the tax man hovering about like Uriah Heep, I conclude I will just have to face up to the fact that I will no longer experience this tobacco. This is an English mixture I could smoke all day. The Virginia base is mild and sweet and comes through nicely in the smoke. The latakia is used a a condiment and provides just the right amount of smokiness in the flavor. The overall effect is creamy and delicious. This is another tobacco which is aptly named. Farewell, old friend. I'll miss you. Most highly recommended. Paddy.

A very, very pleasant mild Virginia, with the pungent sidestream presence of a bit of Latakia. The room note is mouthwatering.

A wonderful evening smoke with a good book - a shame that Murrays is on the way out.
