Cornell & Diehl Long Cut Perique

(3.63)
Perique is a special spice tobacco originating from St. James Parish, Louisiana, the only place where it is made. Compressed, heated, and fermented, the result is a strong peppery/fig flavor. It's worthwhile noting that, due to its length, this particular cut of the condiment leaf can be difficult to blend and shouldn't be used unless called for in specific recipes.

Obviously, this is designed to be a mixer, and is the same perique used in the granulated version. Has a lot of spice, stewed figs, plum, leather, earth, light sourness, a little date note and a light fermentation. It’s strong, and has a very full taste smoked straight. Has a strong nic-hit. Won’t bite, but it will certainly dance on your tongue with army boots. Burns cool and clean and a tad slow as the tobacco is moist. Has a lingering, strong after taste. Needs some relights, and leaves a little moisture in the bowl. Use a very small pipe if you decide to smoke it straight.

Cornell & Diehl - Long Cut Perique.

Pungent!

Due to the length of the ribbons removing just a small amount from the pouch can be a little tricky; because they've all become intertwined a little pinch drags loads out! The colour of my blend appears slightly lighter than the one pictured; the photo looks black yet mine is just dark brown. I notice a musty aroma. The moisture's perfect.

Similarly to the Granulated Perique I reviewed a few weeks back, although this is a blending tobacco it does the job of a morning nicotine fix, with a blast of spice, nicely. There's a heavy Perique flavour, sharp, full, and unwavering. Don't expect a dark fruit, plum-like, Perique taste, this is a more zealous, 'angrier', type! It burns in a faultless fashion, giving a cool smoke. Tongue bite never happened whilst smoking it neat.

Nicotine: strong. Room-note: unpleasant.

Long Cut Perique? Very good quality. Highly recommended:

Four stars.

I was going to smoke some Rattray’s Marlin Flake and decided to add some Perique to the blend and remembered I had bought 4 ounces of this in bulk and noticed this was back in July 2018. I swear the closer I get to the light the faster the gravitational force seems to be accelerating, seems like I just bought this yesterday. From the jar this has a really strong sour fermented smell which I always describe as worm dirt. The long ribbons are dark brown and I mixed some in with the flake I broke up. After finishing the bowl, I decided to smoke some straight. Due to my older taste buds I did not get the flavor profile as described by others, if they can detect pepper, fig, earth, etc. good for them. What I did get was a strong tobacco that as I smoked started to give me a hint of indigestion and the hiccups. I had gotten almost down to the end of the bowl which I would probably consider a mid-size and started to get really green around the gills and using better judgement which I am prone not to decided it was time to stop. It did add some zest to my flake, so I guess I had better just use this for blending or until I forget this experience and try it straight once again. More than likely I will just use this as a condiment to spice up some blends from time to time.

This is very interesting. My 2 oz sample came at a perfect moisture. The bag aroma is prunes, boozy and spicy. The cut is very long and thick. The granulated perique would be a lot easier to work with but at the same time I can cut this down more to what I would like it to be. Obviously I had to smoke it straight to see what it's all about so here we go! It starts off kind of mild actually with a cigar like qualityBut quickly morphs into a full bodied spicy, earthy and a very full flavor. It coats your mouth like a strong cigar. After awhile the earthiness develops from a forest type of earthiness to a dry dirt. By the end of the bowl it has reached to the point that is so full flavored and bodied that your palate is done for the rest of the day. The room note is strong. But no nicotine kick for me. Burns cool and dry.

After trying this, I now have a much better understanding of perique blends. Even in more mild VaPer blends, I can pick out that specific perique flavor.

If you like the idea of blending then give this a try. A dab will do though. Straight perique is a lot more potent in flavor then I expected.

Update 2/14/2024

C&D has changed the perique supplier to one farm now called 31 farms. And there are differences in the new and old versions.

The new version has a much more fruity note and aroma to it. You still get the spicy and earthy flavors but to me the earthy flavors are more of a damp mushroom than dry earth. Also I get I nice natural cocoa to it also.it pair very well with the cocoa notes of a burley. I highly recommend.

This is the same perique as the granulated version CD has in the market (bulk), but like it says in the description it is more difficult to work with as it tends to clump together. The quality is on par with the latter version, but cut into long strips or rough ribbon cut. It can be mixed with red and bright virginia, or any other blending component, to add body and strength. So far I have gone as far as adding 25% to some of my blends, and it works perfectly fine bringing the whole thing into full body, so it can be abused. The moist content is pretty high when you unpack, but it will dissipate as you mix it with other blending components. The taste profile is quite peppery and leathery with fig or earthy undertones. That it has a strong profile does not necessarily mean it is rough on the palate. On the contrary. As you progress with your smoke it will get fuller and fuller, but it never develops a sharp edge. Another thing worth mentioning is that, even if you abuse it, it won't mask the properties of the tobacco you are mixing it with. It just adds a different dimension and complexity, letting you enjoy your blend through different layers as you progress through every quarter of your bowl.

Summary: if you are home blending, this is the Perique you want, but you will have to cut it.

Someone said once that some blending houses adulterate their Perique with regular Burley. I have found that the granular cut often tastes a lot like bulk Burley with a lot of Perique juice on it and some Perique scattered within, so I turned to "Long Cut Perique," which comes out of the jar like a black seaweed, rich with oils and fermentation liquids. It's tobacco sauerkraut, basically, and you want to handle it the same way. When you are ready to blend in your Perique -- say, to a blend that's 30% white Burley, 10% dark Burley, 40% red Virginia, and 20% bright Virginia -- take this slippery stuff out, stick it on a clean cutting board, and slice it into the appropriate length to blend. I use very small bits, since they stick to the Virginias and blend in quite well. It is wetter than the various types of pre-cut Perique, but also has a bit more flavor and burns longer, in my experience.

Everyone who likes blends with perique should buy this, smoke a small bowl straight and try adding it to some blends to get a feel for what perique does to a blend. Also, perhaps that would end the reviews of VaPer blends where people credit the plummy, figgy whateverness to the perique. That is the virginia folks. Not the perique.

The smell in the tin (or bag in this case) could easily pass for straight cow manure and will tingle your nose like vinegar. It is very earthy, fermented and just a touch of some kind of sweetness in the background. Adds a wonderful earthiness and spice to any blend. A must try.

Jar note of pungent fermented vegetation and musty wood. Tobacco is dark brown and brown ribbon; it's quite wet drying will be needed to get it lit. Burns moderate with a few relights. The strength is strong and nic is strong. No flavoring detected. Taste is very full and a very consistent beat down, with notes of spicy, ripe vegetation, dry, bitter, musty earth, mild bread, a woody background note, and a very peppery retro. Room note is tolerable to strong, and aftertaste is good.
