Robert McConnell Oxford Street

(2.00)
A Virginia and Turkish tobacco blend.
Notes: Many internet sources wrongly claim (due to blind cut&paste and an original wrong supposition) that it's a Dunhill Standard Mixture Medium clone, and was originally called Standard Medium. Actually it's viceversa: Oxford Street is the Dunhill Standard Mixture (previously Mild/Mellow) clone, while Notting Hill is the Standard Mixture Medium clone (with a higher Latakia content). It seems to be given as certain that in the Heritage series Oxford Street is the Standard Mixture Medium clone, and Notting Hill is the Standard Mixture Mild/Mellow clone.

Let me express some doubts... I haven't smoked Notting Hill yet, and I plan to do it soon, so my opinions here are based on Oxford Street only. And to me, this Oxford Street is actually closer to the original Mild/Mellow than to the original Medium.

Why? Simple: the abundance of bright Virginias and Orientals. The lack of a toasted note. The lightness. Medium had more red Virginias, and a more toasted character, a marked nuttiness, more body. Oxford Street has none of this: it's light, easy, breezy. Latakia presence is noticeable but light, too (both visually and taste-wise). Medium was sweeter and with more Latakia than Oxford Street.

So, that said, while a fine mixture, with a pleasant fragrance and a certain complexity, this feels a bit empty to me. Not as rich and chewy as a replacement of Medium should be. Either the common knowledge is wrong and Oxford Street is actually a replacement for Mild/Mellow (and Notting Hill is the replacement for Medium, but I will have to prove that personally), or this is quite failed as a clone of the Medium.

Overall superior to the Orlik/STG versions of both Mild/Mellow and Medium (at least it's not cardboardy), but still a bit too flat for my taste. Piccadilly Circus (the London Mixture clone) remains so much better, more satisfactory to me.

UPDATE: I contacted Kolhase & Kopp directly, and they confirmed my suspicion. Oxford Street has a MUCH lower Latakia content than Notting Hill, so the common idea that Oxford Street is the Standard Mixture Medium clone is wrong. It is the clone of the Mild/Mellow!

I have subsequently tried Notting Hill too, and I can confirm that NH is richer, fuller, tastier than OS. Not only as a matter of Latakia content: OS has grassy bright Virginias, NH has sweet and buttery red Virginias.

A tobacco that has led to confusion. I find it similar to Notting Hill and quite strong, although it should feel softer. A rich tobacco, but I prefer Notting Hill
