I’m going to review BARKING ROAD for what it is, for its own merits. Unfortunately I never tried Dunhill’s My Mixture 221B Baker Street, so this is not a comparison. This is not a review of a match compared to the original. Just for what this blend properly is. Content: according to the tin description there is Virginia and there is Burley. According to the Kohlhase & Kopp website there is Virginia, Kentucky and Oriental. No flavoring. I confirm the website description. There is Bright Virginia and Red Virginia (ripened). There is Kentucky and you can taste it from the beginning to the end of the bowl. There is Oriental leaf but little. There is no casing and there is an extremely mild top dressing (imperceptible). Pure tobacco I would say. In my opinion this is a natural classic mixture (a top natural blend), because Kentucky is a main actor. You could also consider this blend a natural aromatic mixture, but in my humble opinion there is too little oriental leaf and too little ripened Virginia. So I think it is more of a classic natural blend and not a natural aromatic mixture (but the taste is strictly personal and for someone it could be). It is a blend between the natural classic and the natural aromatic. Strong enough to satisfy the most demanding palates. Not for beginners but for experienced pipe smokers only. Good, strong and natural. Like old times. In my personal rating system (from 1 to 10) my score is more than 9 and three stars.

Excellent blend all around. Burley, Virginia with a bit of plum top note. The burley is earthy and toasty and the Va provides a bit of hay and sweetness. The topping is not so obtrusive that it over takes the tobacco. This is supposed to be a clone of 221b of Dunhill game and I do believe it fits the bill. This is a very good blend of quality tobaccos and good blending. Tim note is inviting with the plum topping and the smell of well fermented burley I remember from my days of tobacco farming. Moisture of the ribbons is spot on and in good order for a pleasurable smoke. No gunk or gurgle in the bowl. While it is a repeatable smoke I do not believe it is a all day one. Enough strength to get your nicotine motor running. Solid 4 for me. Will store a few tins to age.

This tobacco reminds me of University Flake, which isn't so strange, considering that K&K used to blend it too. Virginia and Burley combine well together to give a deep, dark and quite strong taste. The light topping (plum comes to mind…) complements well the tobaccos, enhancing the overall experience. The ribbon cut make it easy to pack, to light and to keep lit and the smoke is quite slow and cool. I haven't tried any of the original versions, so I can't make any comparison, all I can say is that this tobacco stands on its own merits as a very good blend, that I highly recommend.

I have smoked many McConnell blends and enjoyed the heck out of most of them ! This one seemed right up my alley . Burley dominant and nutty with a little cocoa . Some Virginia tang and grass and a little sweetness. It says Dark fired leaf but I get mostly Burley taste that doesn’t feel smoked fired? It comes in a rough cut and moisture was perfect for smoking out of the tin . It seems it has a mild friuty topping or rum that is VERY mildly applied and does not tone down the tobacco taste at all really . Easy to smoke and fairly mild to maybe close to medium . Not a great smoke but good . Don’t feel the need to get more . 2 1/2 stars .

A tobacco that I did not find pleasant. Tart and without the complexity of the original Dunhill blend. I do not recommend it. . . .
Pipe Used: Castello Dunhill
