The greater part of this blend is double fermented Black Cavendish made out of bright Virginia tobaccos. The blend is balanced with Ready Rubbed Burley which provides a slow and cool smoke. The taste is a match between the tobacco and the special bourbon whiskey flavor that has been carefully added.
Notes: Previously blended in Germany by Planta. Currently blended in Denmark by Mac Baren.
Due to EU regulations, this is renamed and sold in those countries as "Black & B.

Holger Danske - Black and Bourbon.
The unlit mix is really appealing (for me) in many ways: it is predominantly black Cavendish with about a quarter of it being Burley/Virginia. The smell coming from it is a treasure in itself: a really sweet one with a noticeable addition of Bourbon. I must admit that I felt a touch portentous with this one as I don't really care much for whiskey in my blends but I decided to try it and it blew me away!
It lights with superlative ease and then delivers a very steady burn which leaves behind a white ash and gives off (in my view) an amazing flavoured smoke. I have to say that it doesn't taste as I expected. I was expecting it to be a massive whiskey taste and that expectation was enlarged upon smelling the blend unlit but how incorrect and presumptuous I was! I can identify the Bourbon in it only it's more "mellow" than anticipated leaving room for the Sweetness from the black Cav' to be discerned with ease.
Nicotine: mild. Room-note: pleasant.
I must say I find this a little perplexing as up until now I thought whiskey tobaccos and me didn't mix but with its delicate/serene flavour I will make an exemption for Holger Danske's offering!
Four stars.

I recently purchased a couple of tins of this mixture from the Dan Tobacco catalog. I enjoy a little whiskey flavoring in my pipe every now and again, so, the description seemed enticing.
Unlike the Borkum Riff version, this blend was not overwhelmingly cased. I did taste the whiskey flavoring, and the burley kept the mixture from becoming unruly.
If you are an aromatic fancier, and would like to graduate from the drug store blends, grab a tin of Holger's Black & Bourbon!

Too much flavoring, while taste is not full at all. Mild in strenght and dry too fast in the tin. After two weeks...it's just dry tobacco with a smell of old dried cake. Good only if you like aromatics and only if smoked fresh!
Update 1st february 2011: I gave this tobacco another chance. And smoked really slow, paying a bit of attention to the packing, it's really good! Fresh smoke filling mouth and room around the lucky smoker, while the nose can still smell the beautiful aroma and room note. My previous review was due to a misunderstanding between me and this tobacco. I smoked it too fast and may be in a "english" way. And...still going against what I said...better to let it dry 15' before smoking, improves. And...you can also taste a good virginia inside! Reccommended!

This is an excellent everyday aro. Sweet, with a very discreet bourbon casing, without any tongue-bite, easy to pack and to light, smokes also without any difficulty. If tou are into aromatics, you should give this tobacco a try, otherwise... this review is not for you.

An aromatic I certainly enjoy. An every-day blend, non-smokers will like the smell Black and Bourbon creates. This was my second tobacco I ever bought and I have been smoking it for about half a year, sampling other styles of tobaccos inbetween. However, I keep coming back to this aromatic. The Burley works in two ways: firstly, it complements the added flavour of whisky by giving it a slight nutty taste; secondly, the Burley allows the tobacco to burn down easily without having to relight more than twice. You can puff very hard on this but I have never had a tongue burn! The taste overall should be described as a sweet, slightly nutty, and slight alcoholic one. I wouldn't go so far as to recommend sipping your favourite whisky alongside this tobacco, since the whisky taste is not discernible to me (yet). All in all, if you like sweet, nutty and cool-burning aromatics, go for Black and Bourbon.
Edit (April 2017): I found that ageing this blend has neither improved nor impaired the taste of it. What I have noticed, however, is that it does tend to bite you if you either smoke outside while it's windy (April weather, I tell you) or when you're puffing too frequently. Other than that I still quite enjoy smoking this now and again.
Edit (October 2017): Despite it being cold outside, I decided to revisit this particular blend. Usually I favour Latakia heavy blends such as MacBaren's HH Vintage Syrian or SG's Commonwealth Mixture, but I had a craving for something sweet. As a little side note, I kept the remains of my first ever pouch (that I got over one and a half years ago -- how time flies!) in a jar. Having only previously discovered ball-point jars (thanks to Stuff and Things on Youtube, by the way), the tobacco had some opportunity to develop. This development was unfortunately not for the better. I had hoped that the sweetness of the Virginias/of the Black Cavendish would maybe intensify. The smell of the blend had changed drastically; instead of being greeted by a whiff of alcohol and super sweet Black Cavendish, the tobacco smells...off. Sure, it's got some of the sweetness in it but there's a hint of alcohol that's been sitting on the porch for a few days and has lost all of its kick and aroma. I can't rediscover the sweetness that the blend used to have. Sadly, B&B does not age well in any old jar. However, I have a new shipment coming in and I will not make the mistake of keeping it in a generic jar.

Tried out during the summertime, was a pleasant companion during the trip down to Greece. Everybody loved it, even no - smokers. When I opened it, the casting was somewhat astonishing but pleasant. I tried out only outside, but the “room note” was pleasant, even for no-smokers. It kept the humidity level for all the time, even if I “treated” him very bad.

Exactly what one expect from a Holger Danske tobacco: - decent mild smoke - no tongue bite - fast burning tobacco - tobacco smell and room note present the flavour - not the best quality of tobacco in market but good enough - very low price: around $ 3 for 50gm. Pouch - the last part of bowl should be discarded (fine with me) - low in vitamin N Over all I think it is a good tobacco for its price and can fit in any one's rotation if in favour of American aromatic tobacco.

Tasty, not too strong, full of character and my current favourite pipe tobacco. I'm a bit bemused that this is not more highly recommended, as if you enjoy a nice, easy aromatic experience with a pleasing room note, then this is excellent stuff. In fact, I am just off to open a new pouch... and I don't have to go outside...

Holy crunch balls does this weed give off the vapors. Pull off the paper separator, and you find a plastic bag of seriously stewed nuclear flavored ribbons (I didn't find many ready rubbed chunks) that had to be cherry. Then I thought about it for a second, and yeah, if I dumped a glass of bourbon over some tobacco, it would probably have the same tangy, sweet, dour, stink this stuff has. So shame on me for assuming every pungent Aromatic is cherry.
One peculiar thing was it's color. It had a greyish hue similar to pictures of people wondering, "is this mold or plume?". I don't believe it was either, so just a visual side note. The first few puffs were confusing. I was expecting (cherry still) and some deep caramel finish found in whisky blends, instead I just got this hot air with a general alcohol steam, and not much flavor of any kind to be honest. It was almost as if it was topped with a cooking extract made mostly of alcohol and the fire immediately burned off whatever was added to taste.
Smoking this really reminded me of the one time I tried vaping. It just didn't work for me in the least. **Note: I rated the flavoring as strong only because it stinks in the tin, even though it is less than mild once smoked.

Black fore sure (at least in part), Bourbon I don't know. I haven't been able to detect any whisky aroma so far. However, it is a pleasant blend of black Cavendish, Virginia and Burley, with a sweet aroma of liquorice, fruit, coffee and chocolate, perhaps a little alcohol. A nice, cool burning aromatic at a very reasonable price (as yet). Recommended, even if you're not an aromatic habitué.

With this tobacco I found a new favorite. It's a great aromatic, extremely mild but with a great taste and room note. The price is not excessive, making it an excellent deal.
In the pouch, you will find a very dark tobacco with an extremely pleasant and natural smell of bourbon. When lit, it has an adorably noisy burn with rather thin smoke and no bite. As said, it is extremely mild and low in nicotine, and it would be almost like smoking hot air, if it weren't for the great taste and room note.
I recommend this tobacco to those who enjoy the aromatic aspect of smoking the pipe, rather than the nicotine buzz. Everyone around will also love it.

As I learned from the reports of my dear forum members on the Pipabolt.hu community forum, I found out, and finally I could see with my own eyes, that this pipe is indeed carbon black. A couple of long, blond Burley also mingle in it, giving the whole tobacco a kind of melancholy hue; in a good way, of course. Needless to say, it speaks for itself, as does its color and texture. After the Borkum Riff Cherry Cavendish dried to crisp due to the long ventilation, this time I just took a stuffing out of the package, ahead of my next blunder. I carefully set the rest aside, both in a bag and a box, but before that I had a feel for how wet the sauce was. I stuffed the amount taken out for ventilation into my pipe after half an hour. Its ignition still left some objections due to the rapid ventilation, but apart from that it started to burn evenly as soon as it caught fire. The filling went well, I was able to smoke the tobacco at a calm pace, I didn’t have to force it. The smoke has pleasant, light aromatic properties, and unlike others, I could feel the bourbon on it, I didn’t have to drink any spirits for it. However, as I smoked in a new pipe, which had only just seen tobacco for the first time and needed further burning, and the stem was shorter than before, the smoke reached hot and pungent towards the end of the stuff, from which I decided to end the puffing. Overall, I was completely satisfied with all its qualities, and I think it will even intensify later on, I fell in love with this new bourbon flavor so much. I have a feeling that this pipe tobacco will run out sooner than the previous ones. :)

New name: HD B&B. For sweet black Cavendish tobacco lovers. A very nice Cavendish-based aromatic. Attractive dark brown and black color. Good pouch note, pleasant room note. The short-trimmed cut allows this tobacco to light and burn quite easily, perhaps too fast. It's a sweet, delicate and mellow aromatic. The aroma is enjoyable and consistent throughout the bowl. Classic tip-of-the-tongue Cavendish sweetness, the Bourbon aroma is barely detectable, somewhat hidden between other aromas. Perhaps this blend is also vanilla cased. In my opinion this feels more like a "true" processed Cavendish, and not one of those (small "c") cavendish "fakes", which are simply black tobaccos sprayed with cheap toppings. Among my "top-of-the-list" tobaccos at the moment.
2022 update: in more recent batches, a distinct alcoholic, "Bourbon-ish" note is clearly present, especially in the first half of the bowl. the aroma is much better now. Bravo!!

Well-done!
I am more kentucky, latakia, and heavy English blends person. But this extensively aromatized black cavendish blend is attracting me very much. Once you open the pouch/tin and leave it in a small room, the smell will definitely capture the whole area. One will pack his pipe with soft and silky, rough-cut, tobacco and enjoy the next half hour. If I didn't read that this blend also has burley and virginia in it, I would say it's just based on pure black cavendish. To me, burley and virginia in the blend is unnoticeably low.
Taste is quite stable through the bowl. Burns faster than I am used to. The whiskey and vanilla notes are dominating in overall, but the whiskey is always one step ahead. Lastly, the name, "Black and Bourbon" has been changed as "B.B". As a smoker of both, I can also confirm that there is no difference between both, simply a name change.
Since it probably contains a lot of chemicals, recommended if and only if to one wants try something burns, smells, tastes like tobacco, but not actually a tobacco.

To be honest I wasn't expecting to like this too much. The casing/topping is certainly too sweet (to my taste) for the very mild tobacco flavour but the Burley seems to carry this well. It tastes more specifically of sweet vanilla than bourbon, although there is a certain crossover of flavours there. In the end, I can't deny that is is actually a very enjoyable smoke.
It burns well and dry leaving very little dottle but I found it does need a lot of puffing to keep going, but then that suits my style of smoking... The excessive cadence required does however mean that it smokes a bit hot but this did not translate to any level of bite. Room note is very heavy but pleasant.
All in all, I enjoyed it and if this is your type of thing it is hard to beat but I just can't imagine myself buying this in the future. But then again...

I have recently purchased Holger Danske - Black & Bourbon. As a new pipe smoker, I am in a process of tracking tobacco which suits my flavoring preferences. Among some types purchased, I felt great disappointment smoking this. as it reminded me that I was smoking chemicals instead of a nice aromatic tobacco. Strong tongue bite couldn't assist me in to track the actual flavor of the tobacco. As a new pipe smoker, it might be difficult yet to express an actual opinion/review for a tobacco however I would not recommend this one as a beginning.

Borkum Riff used to be a very good mixture back 40 years ago but its quality slipped a bit each time the company changed ownership. I was looking for a mixture that tasted similar to the old Borkum Riff when I tried B&B and I was disappointed. It has an odd chemical taste rather than a bourbon flavor. It's not a bad mixture but, in my opinion, not worth getting another tin of it.

A new, flower-like Japanese acquaintance has recently introduced me to Jim Bean Bourbon, which I like to smoke, er, drink along with some medium+ Virginia flake, say Rattray's Marlin flake. If you do it often enough, some of the bourbon breath might actually rub off on your pipe, if you always use the same one. The combination of Bourbon & Virginia is indeed made in heaven.
Enjoy it that way, and forget this artificially-wrought cased cav.

I received a sample of B&B from my recent TinSociety box. It is not something I would have picked for myself due to some previous bad experiences with "bourbon" flavored tobacco.
In the bag, it seemed to have a good moisture level. I found a couple of stems in my sample which I had not experienced in a long time. Its a mix of brown and black tobaccos. The smell was unremarkable but I thought I could smell some bourbon. Ribbon cut is easy to light and keep lit.
I found it to be a decent aromatic. Much better than my other bourbon experiences, but it is also less intense. The flavoring seems chemically more than true alcohol or maybe there is some PG in there?
I got a little "nutty" taste from the tobacco which makes me wonder if a little burley might be hiding in there.
Not something that will make the rotation, but not a horrible smoke either.

My Favourite! I bought it in 2005? and it has been little used until now. I have re-moistened it a few times. Lovely smell. Mild ,mild and nice. No tounge bite, never smokes hot (well it is possible of course), but it´s just so nice. I don´t know about the flavourings, bourbon? never mind what it says on the backside of the pouch, it´s what I would prefer to smoke most of the times. The room note is very aromatic and less cigarette-ish than most others. My wife prefers it more than others I have. The lady who recommended this to me knew what she was talking about. Need to order more since I´m almost out, and there are no well assorted tobacco dealers around me.

A pleasant tobacco but with a bizarre behavior: all we know that every tobacco needs the right pipe to pull out the best, but in this case (IMHO) the differences between pipe to pipe are exaggerated. Generally talking, for B&B seems better a medium-large bowl. It also seems to suffer much of climate: dry climate emphasizes the aromas, the humid climate flattens them, at least that was my experience ..... It is normal that the weather might affect the pleasantness of smoke, but from a flavoured Black Cavendish I expected better consistency.

A quite mild aromatic. Its mildness is double edged in that it both makes a rather cool, all-day smoke but also a rather impersonal mixture with nothing special to crave for.
Not annoyingly sweet, the tobacco itself hasnt got a very pronounced character and the casing alludes to a pleasant creamy roundness. Could be combined with a harsher-tangy virginia to provide with softness and a slight aroma.

Like menthol-ciggarettes, only in the case of this, the menthol is replaced with Jack Daniels or some other American Bourbon, but I suspect the flavoring to be chemical. This tobacco is not biting at all, it is very gentle to all parts of the mouth, but all these parts probably will notice the smoke coming in but will be wondering when the taste of tobacco finally is coming!

I usually like the whiskey/bourbon type of tobacco, but i found this a little on the bland side for my liking.

The cavendish hints under a somewhat heavy casing. Though better than most, it is still chemical rich and tongue-bite prone. Still not a bad choice for near-non-smoking parties - when left open for a few days it gets better.

Even my inexperienced pallet can notice a difference in quality between this blend and blends a few dollars more expensive. If you only have enough money to buy this blend, go for it. It satisfies and isn’t harsh. It has the sweet, smooth, velvety texture from its cavendish base, complimented by the mild burley. The bourbon casing comes across as more of a muddled mix of subtly sweet fruit flavors. This blend can bite if pushed but generally has a tendency not to. Good for the price point, but I personally don’t plan on revisiting this blend.

This is a lot like Lane 1-Q but with a “sweet bourbon” topping. It has a very similar taste as 1-Q but with the bite expected from MB blends if pushed so ease up on your puffing. A great crowd pleaser with its delicious room note.
Develops into more of a “straight” Burley after the toppings vaporize off by the halfway point in your bowl. Very low nicotine (less than 1-Q) which I appreciate. I could smoke this all day. Worth picking up a tin if you like mild aromatics.

At times, I sniff the pouch because I enjoy the smell almost more than smoking in. This being said, it is a pleasant smoke. This, especially considering it is among the cheapest pipe tobaccos (8 euros - same price as some utter filth, like Clan, which no one should ever ever buy). SO, at this price point, it's an absolute bargain. The bargain isn't what gets me going back to it. At first it felt a bit ordinary, no dramatic anything, the room note is wonderful, I can smoke it next to my girlfriend and not feel bad. I can smoke it on my balconies and my neighbors think I'm burning incense. In one sense it's nothing absolutely mind blowing, but it's also something very nice, very sweet, and tangy. I would have liked a bit more "thickness" to it maybe, a bit more "fullness" to the aroma", but then again, it remains very nice. The flavors stay in the background, to some extent I would have liked to feel them even more.
I think this will become a tobacco I regularly buy. A nice "nonchalant ordinary afternoon smoke". I also enjoy that the flavor is consistent throughout the pack, and that the flavor is also consistent whether it is warm or cold outside.

If you're not afraid of some of the reviews of this tobacco, try it. It's a delicious dessert tobacco. It's sweet and warm, it doesn bite. It burns great and produces thick, silky smoke. You can taste a lot of the tobacco leaves beneath the aromas added to this blend. The taste is not nearly as strong as the smell on the pouch. Great aro.

Very cheap, yet highly palatable blend, from Holger Dankse.
It's very black indeed with a few brown bits here and there. The pouch aroma is quite strong, possibly overpowering and my first thought was that this is a nasty chemically enhanced mixture of god-knows-what.
It seems this thought was unjustified and the smoke does not follow on from the opening scent. Yes, it tastes a bit on the trashy side and needs quite a few relights, but it's actually quite mild and prolonged use does not seem to sicken the palate, like say, the Cellini blends.
It's a typical Danish concoction, coming through with (at first) flowery flourish, which later settles down to a rather pleasant sweet strawberry chocolate flavour with an alcoholic smattering in the background.
You don't relight from cold, and the tobacco comes very very dry, and as a result smokes down quite quickly. Decanting into a jar with a pueblos stone is recommended.
Not a bad blend if stuck without an aro fix and certainly not down there with throwaway blends like Meine Mixture. Worth a try and at under 6 euros (the Germans have actually DECREASED the price of their tobaccos, due to a change in VAT rate) very good value.

Tabacco aromatizzato e piacevole. Taglio grosso, brucia lentamente con un aroma pieno e gustoso. A volte leggermente umido per cui è meglio farlo asciugare un poco. Tagliato al 50% con Trinciato Italia diventa portentoso. Prezzo abbastanza basso(specie in Italia). Consigliatissimo
