Torben Dansk Louisiana Perique U.S.A
(2.50)
A noble speciality from the South of the USA, and meantime a true rarity. Best to be dosed sparingly due to the succinct aroma.

This pure perique is a great virginia and burley blend....... No. seriously now, this has absolutely nothing to do with perique. By itself, it tastes quite nice, but if you want a spicy perique to put in your blends, avoid this one. IT.IS.NOT.PERIQUE!
Lets talk about it a bit.
Tin note: Fruity, dark fruit, prunes/plums.
Aspect and presentation: The tobacco comes in a plastic bag that is put in a standard paper that you get your usual tobacco in. Beautifully cut ribbons, black, dark brown. Moisture is ok, just good to fill the pipe directly.
Taste and flavor: No, seriously. This tastes exactly like an aged virginia, not at all like a perique. First notes are sweet, as a mature virginia, then it slowly gets a biiiiit spicy. Has taste of plums and a deep dark fruit flavor. Lately, it has changed to taste to that of a white burley with some cocoa and nutty flavor. Tried to experiment with it and left it in the bowl for a few hours, the plum topping faded a bit, but still not much spice, it’s more smoky than spicy. Actually tastes very good, but not how a pure perique should taste like Retrohaling doesn’t offer anything
Lights up very easy and stays lit with no effort, no bite, no hot smoke.
strength: mild to medium flavoring: very or mild taste: medium room note: very pleasant
Good as a smoke, but not a pure perique, thus this one only gets two stars.

Fresh out the tin I totally agree with Filip. Just like him I thought: Dude! Prunes etc. Massive dissapointment! Soaking wet. It sat around for a year. Dried out, still oily, just the overall humidity went down. Totally different experience now. Sour, raisins (like that rather medicinal taste - stuff your face with like a proper hand full and chew away if you know what i mean) sharp, stingy. No St. James LA Perique I guess. But good enough to spice up some VAs. Careful, needs to be applied in homeopathic dosages, this stuff cant be smoked straight!!! But I did find it to taste of just what I look for in Perique.
