Planta have put out a few interesting blends in the last couple of years, which defy their image as Germany's premier saucerers, and this is one of them. This is a bargain-basement blend without any flavouring added, and so I bought a tin, thinking that if it weren't any good, it would not be too much of a loss to toss it in the bin.

The 50g cardboard tin is the same size as many 100g cigarette 'baccy tins being offered where I live. Very loosely packed. The "great care" as noted on the tin must be more concerned with selecting the cheapest, least matured leaf available than with flavour or quality: the long ribbons are definitely not matured at all. The tin note is grassy, with some hay-ish sweetness. Straight-out VA, tempered by a touch of Burley. The Kentucky mentioned on the tin I cannot really make out in the smell. The colours are bright yellow to light brown.

Stuffing is easy, so is lighting. I would recommend a good amount of pressure when stuffing, though,as this blend burns relatively fast, and the leaf is relatively dry compared to some other brands. The flavour is hay-ish and sweet, the sweetness probably mostly provided by the Burley. Maintenance is easy if properly stuffed, and there is some spice towards the end, most likely the KY rearing its head at last. I end up with some dottle, but not enough to complain. The Kentucky probably contributes to the fast burn. Using a very large bowl gives me a little more dottle, but a more docile smoke with a reasonable duration.

Burns relatively cool for something that is mostly VA. The room note is somewhat cigarette-ish due to the US-grown VA, but the Burley mellows it a little.

This is something I could imagine as an all-day smoke, to be replaced by something more substantial in the evenings. It is all-out cheap, make no mistake, but not bad at all.

PURE TOBACCO? This is it! Just in the maner of Plantas "Image Virginia" (which is only treated with water, no casings, nothing..!), this seems to be in the same fashion! The name is very apt! Farmers tobacco... pure tobacco, tart, slightly sweet. The aromas are less intense than you are used to by cased tobaccos.

Slighty Virginia, caramel-ish notes, hay an nutty-tart tones from the Burley and Kentucky.... this is as pure as it gets! Pretty dry, but it's good as it is! Smoke slow or it'll get sharp and have no flavours. Smoke slowly, you'll get most natural pipe tobacco (in the truest sense of this phrase) that makes you dream of a farmer working his field, whilst the wifey is calling him for dinner!

3/4 stars+ worthy for what it is. This may not appeal to everyone, but anyone who wants pure tobacco... here it is! As well as Image Virginia! Planta is usually known for goopy, chemical aromatics... nice change of pace by them!
