Vauen TAB 150 Jubiläum (Jubilee)

(3.00)
A blend consisting of the worlds best provenances: Virginia, Kentucky and Louisiana. Harmonized with black cavendish, high-grade curly-cuts and flake-pieces. The result is a premium tobacco of the highest quality and refinement. The varying cuts ensure a cool, even burn. This precious mixture is very mellow and enjoyable. The fruity flavor is unobtrusive and spoils not only the smoker, but also his surroundings.
Notes: This was released as a Jubilee edition for Vauens 150th anniversary. Besides the 50 grams tin, there's also a 100 grams refill-bag available.

Opening the interesting looking tin, I was quite surprised. I was awaiting a natural pipe tobacco, but the cover sheet on top of the tobacco already reveals it: This tobacco is sauced! A lot of it is sticking to the cover sheet. But to be fair - they don't sell this as an all natural tobacco, it was just me expecting it to be, because of the Virginia, Louisiana (Perique), Kentucky composition.

Inside there is a appetizing melange of decent share of bright yellow flake-chunks, and just as much of loose tobacco, ranging from black to brown and yellow in color, and...Curly Cuts! But sadly I only had three Curly-Coins in the whole tin. That's really the only downside about this lovely, unique and intriguing look of this blend.

The tin note is interesting and genuine. It's kinda sweet, almost popcorn-like, but not in a overwhelming or obtrusive way, even to me, who don't smoke aromatic blends regularly. Mildly fruity, with apricots, figs, raisins and I can't help myself but to notice a very slight licorice note to it. The fruity-sweetness is countered by a decently spicy aroma of real spices, and some tobacco-y scent. I'd say the sweet nuances are a tad more present tho. You'd think this to be much more sweet in smoke, judging by the tin-note, but when setting it on fire I got proved to be wrong about it.

TAB 150 (Jubilee) is one of those blends I call "semi-aromatics", as flavoring and tobacco are in interplay and both have their share in the taste-profile!

In the first few puffs I perceived the flavoring intensly, which quickly got restrained and balanced by the tobacco-ish qualities until it settles for a "semi-aromatic taste". Fruity and sugary, almost caramell-ish sweet aroma, that's present throughout the bowl, but never too much. The Perique not only gives a decent peppery-spice to the blend, but also in interplay with the flavoring creates aromas of figs, apricots, and raisins. Also a mild citrusy quality, which may come from the Virginias too. The Kentucky leaf adds solid body to the taste, as well as a bit of smokiness and is tweaking up the spice. Perique and Kentucky leafs are what making this blend "semi-aromatic" and adding solid spice, body and tobacco-y aroma to make it pleasant even for me, as a pipe smoker who very rarely likes and/or smokes aromatics.

Really not bad, really not bad at all....! This is very unique, and to me falls into the same category of obviously flavored blends like Peterson's 3Ps, Dunhill 221b Baker Street or Exclusive Royal, who have enough tobacco in flavor to appeal to aromatic smokers who want to lean towards more tobacco-y blends, just as to natural tobacco smokers who like tobacco-forward, aromatic blends by times.

Very good choice if you have to take care about your surroundings and the room note, but want a smoke that has enough body and spice to it, to keep one satisfyied. 3,5-stars!
