Motzek Burley's Best (Friend)

(2.00)
Translated description from the German website: The name of Burley's Best (Friend) already hints towards it having a decent amount of burley in it. When opening the bag, you'll notice the different tobaccos and their cuts. There's bright, loose Virginia, ready rubbed components, dark tobacco fibers, brown-olive tobacco cuts, some fine cut curly slices, and coarse cut, reddish-brown burley. Here we are dealing with a colorful mix of Virginias, Kentucky, perique and burley.

I re-visited this today, so I'm writing a new review on it.

Burley´s Best Friend has a delightful look. It has everything in it, ribbons, ready-rubbed, Curly-Cuts...very intriguing and interesting. Colors are mainly medium- t dark-brown with few bright speckles in it. The coins are cut very thinly (like all Motzek Curly-Cut coins) and are a joy to handle, especially for me as a Curly Cut fan. Small coins, about the size of a penny.

The scent from the bag is woodsy, cedar-like, a bit nutty, has some spice in it and very little sweetness in the back. I was expecting this to be more on the chocolaty, Burley-ish side, but it's very woodsy and Motzeks description of "cedar-wood" is very apt. It also has some dark-chocolate notes to it (70-80% cocoa chocolate).

Various packing methods are available, and it's a joy to experiment with them. Find your own preferences. Mine is ribbons and ready-rubbed in the bottom, a coin, more loose tobacco, a coin and top it with some more loose/ready-rubbed. Like this I get all of the flavors out of it.

Comes perfectly conditioned and doesn't need any drying time, as it comes slightly "crispy" right away.

On first light instantly spoils you with very cedar-woody aroma, that's underscored with a gentle nuttiness and minor dark chocolate notes. The cedar and nuttiness form a base, which is consistent throughout the smoke and the dark-chocolate aroma intesifies a bit as you progress. It has some spicy, but not overwhelmingly, yet enough to keep me satisfyied. Slightly peppery, very tobacco-y. The Perique sports a minor fruitiness and some sourness to balance the "dark" character of the mixture. Virginias adding some sweetness, but really just a touch. A "roasted" quality quickly joins this beautiful melange of most natural flavors to make it even more interesting.

A lot of things going on in this blend! Very deep, very complex, but never overwhelming. You could also puff this while not taking your mind on it and get a delightful smoke. Yet I prefer taking your time and concentration to really delve into this "artistic" blend.

Top-notch blend, of which I'll get more as soon as possible. Burley- and Kentucky-enthusiasts will love this for it's most natural, tart and intense flavors. But I feel also smokers of the English-style will like this as a spicy, woodsy change of pace inbetween their Latakia mixtures.

4/4 stars for a skillfully blended, artistically mixture that's unlike anything I have ever smoked. If you're expecting "a simple Burley-forward" blend, you'll be surprised how complex and rich in flavors a Burley/kentucky blend can be!

**Update:** After having this blend stored for several months in a mason jar the flavor(s)/flavor profile has dramatically changed, if not to say: The flavors are lost! (This one has this odd fructouse-ish sweetness, that drowns all the other flavors) I've noticed the same phenomenon (that quite baffles me..) with several other Motzek/TAK blends. A pity, as I have 200-400g of several TAK-Blends jarred up.. half of which I had to dump in the trash, as they taste totally different.. some of them are fructous-ish sweet, nothing else.. some have lost their flavors and are "flat"... some turned sour... sorry, but I'll have to downrate and recommend: If you smoke this within a short period of time (1-4 months) this is just fine and a wonderful Burley Cake that lacks competition in Germany imho.... but sadly this 'flaw', the loss/dramatically change of aroma/flavors foreces me to downrate..
