Motzek Tom's Dark Twist

(3.86)
The dark side of power. 50% dark fired Kentucky and 50% perique provide rich aroma and powerful spice. Still gentle and mild, almost velvety. Very rich, but never aggressive. Hand-spun and carefully baked for flavoring.
Notes: Comes in pouches of 100 grams, and [your] experience may vary from the pouch to pouch.

Toms Dark Twist is THE best tobacco I've had so far. Not one of them...THE best! I'm crazy about this tobacco.

As mentioned before the smell from the bag is like dung of body odors, especially when the tobacco gets a bit warm in the bag. Don't let that scare you! I've learnd if a tobacco smells bad, it will taste insanely good. Thats a rule to me so far!

The twist has lovely apperance, is hand-made from a bunch of rather young guys in Kiel, Germany. They offer a selection of tobaccos, that no-one offers anywhere. At least I don't know any other blend thats 50%/50% Kentucky & Perique. Or blends with 40% perique, a range of twists, plugs, crumble cakes and a bunch of curls. Which other pipe tobaccco company makes a selection like this? This is unique, innovative and foremost creative as hell! This is what the pipe market in Germany was missing, this is what stands out inbetween countless blends which are soul-less and mass-productions. They told me they only produce small batches of 10-15kg per blend. And every one of those blends is unique as it could be, hand crafted!

After a bit of drying time, the tobacco is rather easy to light and no hard work to keep lit, even tho some re-lights are needed.

Toms Dark Twist has a taste unlike any other blend. 50% Perique accompanied by 50% Kentucky. Thats it...And that's what it tastes like! Deep, woodsy notes of dark fired Kentucky with a few cigar-ish notes. Rich fermented taste of the Perique with a good amount of spice & pepper. Also a whiff fruit is to be noticed, that rounds the tobacco.

The taste is a bit inconsistent, as flavours may vary depending on how you pack it. The twist has black leafs on the outside and a brighter, medium brown core with lighter dots. But that's part of the experience. Flavours vary while getting through the bowl and keep the smoke from being one-dimensional or boring. It's always interesting and the range of flavours it offers is surprisingly and pleasuring.

Chapeau! THIS is tobacco to the true nature of tobacco. No fancy stuff, just honest, bold tobacco with bewitching flavours that will be a pleasure to any pipe smoker who likes a stronger and spicy tobacco.

4/4 stars! I'd give 10 if I could!

The rope looks beautiful. Darker leaves outside and brighter inside. The covering leaves sometimes a full leaf of Burley Kentucky tobacco. The rope is quite dense, it is easy to cut thin coins with a sharp knife and rub them by hand. The moisture level is quite high, requires a bit of drying before smoke. The smell is earthy, woody, leathery, with a hint of raisins and figs in the background. Once it is dried a bit, it is easy to pack and light. For me, the Kentucky dominates in the taste. Also, the nicotine level is quite high, but not overwhelming even without filter. The taste is very complex, you can discover new notes after each smoke. Gives a fair amount of smoke as well. At the last third of the bowl the peppery taste of Perique shows itself, giving a nice frame to the whole bowl. Leaves a fine white ash. Highly recommended after a big meal with a glass of Syrah. Not for beginners.

Presentation is beautiful. A twist more than an inch thick featuring everything from blackish brown to golden.

The smell of the tobacco is very strong. It ranges from dung to body odors and you need to have an iron will to investigate further.

There's a live broadcast of a Korean car brand on Fox 10 and I don't care. I just had a bowl of this blessing.

I prepared this tobacco by cutting a slice off, then again cutting it into cubes and then rubbed it out. There was a cover leaf hanging off, very dark, so I assume it must have been pure Perique. This I ripped apart and mixed it into the bowl. Lighting was easy; I think it can take a tighter packing. Relights were necessary.

Enter the taste; this is a man's 'baccy for sure. Smoky, sometimes also cigar-leaf like Kentucky, always accompanied then yielding and taking back the foreground to and from the peppery and immensely tasty Perique.

For lovers of strong tobacco, this could be the pinnacle of blending. You must try this. You must also fasten your seat belts for the nicotine ride.

Don't make the mistake and think that this is just some Irish Flake with Perique or some Black XX rip-off. This tobacco should be as known to the world as them for its own right!

This is a crazy blend, it shouldn't work, but it does. 50% Dark Fired Kentucky and 50% Perique. That's all. Apparently there is some baking involved, however the first taste is pretty close to Toscano cigars which are 100% Dark Fired (Italian and American). I love Toscano cigars!

From then on it's a warp, a journey. An eyewatering blast of nicotine and BIG flavours. No sweetness. Tons of pepper, wood, some BBQ smoke, hints of cigar - Toscano - and a weird metallic taste which I haven't tasted before, like sucking on a coin.

The retrohale is like breathing fire. Ears ringing, hiccups - the very first time I get hiccups, and I used to chain smoke, I've used snus, cigars and several pipe blends considered strong. This is stronger than 1792 flake, miles stronger than Old Dark Fired (no Virginia or the MacBaren process to temper the DFK with the twist), stronger than brown and black Gawith ropes, as well as stronger than Rustica.

So is it good? For me it shot up my top 5 with the first bowl, and I've had 5 bowls so far (one per day, it really keeps you full). I don't even know how to describe it in more detail, I kind of got lost in the bowl, and it was my smallest bowl. Cool and long smoking. The room note...would probably scare thieves away!

Took the plunge and ordered a death star's worth from TAK.. Which was quite an act of trust some ways as you need to do a bank transfer...

Arrived promptly a week ago and I've waited to do a review, and very much considered not doing one... To keep it to myself..

TDT was the first one I went for, cutting off a couple of slices.. Packing what seemed to be entire tobacco leaves into the bowl and lighting up. Seemed almost like an act of desecration as the twist itself is so beautiful to behold, and smell. Admittedly the first rope I've ever bought but...

Burns very cool, though is a pain in the whatnot as requires many relights... But tastes divine.

I thought I'd found my perfect tobacco with Nightcap though I now save my TDT for the sort of situations that nightcap is meant to be for. Late at night or as a special treat. Tastiest tobacco i've ever tried, quite a nicotine hit though sometimes feels like a hit per light as keeping it going can be a puff fest, though maybe I'm not drying it out properly first. Can be harsh on first light or subsequent but only for the first draw.

Taste wise it is thick, leathery, spicy and cool... I'm sure those with better palettes will detect plums, raisins and whatnot but to me it is exactly what I think strong tobacco should be.

I also bought Latakia revival, which is far tastier but a little less vic N than nightcap, Kieler Foerde, black gold and received a sample of moizo cake. All excellent in different ways.

Will be ordering more that's for sure. When Condor get's high stars on here one wonders what the limits of the rating system is but this is my absolute farourite and compared to the 1 1/2 packs of such which haven't been touched in a month it is food of the gods.

This is a wonderful tobacco.50% dark fired kentucky and 50% perique to the mix. Heaven! The moisture is high, so when you cut the rope be sure to let it dry at least for one hour. But then...when you light you are welcomed by a fantastic, full taste. Almost cigar-like. This is a strong blend undoubtedly, so if you are nicotine sensitive be sure to smoke it after a meal. The taste is full too, so you will want to smoke it after a meal anyway! Also, the company states that this is a natural tobacco without anything added, so thats an extra point. Also for such a heavy blend, the room note is not offensive at all. Overall, one of the best -if not the best- tobaccos I had the chance to enjoy.

I ordered Tom`s Dark Twist a few weeks before. As I got it I was happy about the nice looking, but a bit sad about the wet condition of the Twist. My first pipe I smoked was not really a great smoking pleasure. I decided to put it a few weeks beside to dry it a bit. Now, the Twist is a bit dryer and it burns very a well. It´s a strong Perique/Kentucky blend with a great taste. The sweetness and fruitness of the Perique is well balanced to the Kentucky leaf. A very well made twist, I like it more than the Lakeland twists, but for the daily smoke too strong. I would give it 3 stars because the twist was too wet and the taste is not soo complex I would wish.
