The tobacco was originally GL Pease "Tribute", a special blend of red, lemon and stoved red Virginia , perique and toasted Cavendish.
Notes: Manufactured under this name in 2002 until at least 2003, when it was discontinued until it resurfaced under the name "First Responders". The ship this series was named for was decommissioned in 2011, about the time First Responders came out.

Predominately dark in color, wider ribbons with the same smell of mustiness and dark chocolate as the original Tribute. I only know the history that was stated on the tin - that this is the same recipe as Pease's Tribute, which was a limited edition. C&D now calls this blend "First Responders". I picked up this tin dirt cheap.

I compared this head-to-head with GLP Tribute of the same vintage and found them essentially identical in taste. This is a deep and earthy Virginia blend that eschews any semblance of citrus or tang, and particularly sweetness. There is the slightest hint of sweet in the flavor but it's fleeting and it's more of a light nut sweetness. I find that interesting in a Virginia blend that also contains toasted Cavendish. The perique was neither peppery nor fruity and was really only noticeable in the snork as a dark spice that just barely balanced out the earthiness. Without snorking, the perique was MIA for the most part. As with Tribute and First Responders, this blend rewards the snorker. Even so, I find it good but far from great. I still have some Tribute but I rarely smoke it and I haven't bought any FR since my first tin. Pease probably knew something C&D does not. 🙂
