The burley and Kentucky burley combine to provide a lot of nuttiness, earth, some molasses with a little cocoa and a touch of wood. The strength and taste levels are just past the center of mild to medium. The nic-hit is mild. Won’t bite, but fast puffing may get you a cigarette note, and possibly a slight rough edge. Burns fairly cool and a little slow with a clean, uncomplicated, consistent flavor. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires a few relights. Has a pleasant after taste. Can be an all day smoke or even a mixer if you so choose. Three and a half stars.

I like the simplicity of FGT 51. It is burley. Plain and simple. There's the nuttiness in abundance and I found it a fairly smooth smoke.

The main problem I had is trying to keep the pipe going. Because FGT 51 doesn't stay lit. If you puff harder to keep it going, it becomes hotter than the fires of Dis. And who likes that? If you keep your puffing at a sedate pace, you're constantly relighting and who wants to be doing that all the time?

So I made an 80-20 mix of FGT 51 and Maryland. That significantly improved the burn quality and maybe added a hint of sweetness, but also kept the burley taste.

As a blend by itself, I'd say this is probably better suited for blending, than puffing away an afternoon. Adding the Maryland, now I can go for a walk and not have to stop every five feet to relight my pipe.

It is a tasty mixture -- especially if you love burley. I'm not crazy about burley, but I like the nuttiness and fairly soft smoke I got for half a bowl. So, to my mind, it was worth trying to fix the scorching in the second half of the bowl. And that 20% Maryland addition seems to have done the trick.

By itself, I'd say 2 stars. With the Maryland (which is an easy fix) 3 stars.
