The Crater Mixture No. 1 is a mixture [of] vigorously spicy Virginia/burley flake with some black cavendish. A splendid tobacco for the later hours of the day.

The Virginia is moderately spicy with a little tart and tangy citrus and hay/grass as the lead component. The spice kind of gives it a feel of perique without the other aspects that perique has to offer. The burley is toasty, a little nutty, woody and earthy along with a minor molasses note in a support role. The unsweetened black cavendish offers some mild sugar to smooth out the blend. Has a mild nic-hit. Won’t bite, and has no harsh or dull spots. The strength is mild, and the taste is just a shade beyond that. A well balanced blend with less complexity than expected or as implied by my description. The flake is mildly moist and easily broken apart to fit your packing preference. Burns at a moderate pace, cool, clean and smooth with a consistent taste. Requires fewer relights than your average flake, and leaves virtually no dampness in the bowl. The after taste is pleasant, but short lived, and the room note is pleasant as well. A mild, all day smoke that lacks flavor depth and body, but does okay as a work and play smoke. Two and a half stars out of four.

For lovers of virginia flake this one is a some what decent match . The virginia rules the day here but the burley gives it that extra little snap .The black cavendish does add sweetness . The tin note is mild but earthy in the way that virginia can be . After the char lite I noted the sweet , all be it too sweet ,taste of the Virginias. Although the tobaccos used seem to be high grade this one is a little too sweet for my taste , though others might like that . It is so beautiful in the tin that one might not want to disturb it .Can be used as a wake up smoke and as a go to all through the day . It do not at all like the cut of the flake , it being thick and difficult to rub out , leaving big chucks that get in the way of the burn .This is the type of tobacco that needs to be puffed slowly to achieve it's base sweetness . Put it in glass as soon as you open it as with all other HU tobaccos .
