Another outstanding offering when the Dunhill blends were made by Murray's - I've never sampled an original, Dunhill England Standard Mixture Mild. The Latakia and Orientals play peek-a-boo through the rich Red Virginia leaf employed. All components compliment each other in a way that I didn't really find to be mild as the blend was like eating a Porterhouse Steak.
A fine, almost shag cut mixture that is very pungent with a very fermented smell. The taste is mostly of creosote and there is nothing subtle or mild about this tobacco. Very smoky and somehow bitter, the nicotine level is not mild at all but it does have a slow burn and some classic ''incense" aroma. Tobacco quality is ''old school Dunhill'' great as expected, this tin was made by Murray & Sons. The Latakia is very present and one has to ask how it tasted 20+ years ago. An after lunch or evening smoke for a journeyman pipe smoker but not an everyday one for me.
This is a perfectly balanced English blend. I never tried the re-release Standard Mixture Mellow and so I can't make a comparison. But this one (the old one mild) is really a classic Dunhill mixture. Not properly a mild blend, taste and strength are medium. Latakia is well present and tasty, Virginia and Orientals are excellent. A perfect balance of flavors. Absolutely for English mixtures lovers. In my personal rating system (from 1 to 10) my score is 8 and three stars.
