W.O. Larsen Limited Edition 2016

(3.75)
For 2016 W.O. Larsen presents a striking new mixture. A base of deep mahogany coloured Virginia with just the right amount of black cavendish and Oriental to add spice and sweetness. A finishing touch of vanilla, coconut, caramel and coffee are introduced making the blend a remarkable composition.

W. O. Larsen - Limited Edition 2016.

This is a blend that works well, VERY well, but there is however one huge problem for me: opening the tins inner pouch! I've never encountered a seal that's so hard to break L.O.L!

Anyway, I didn't know (like a few fellow reviewers) if this collaboration of ingredients would be good or not. As it goes, it's one of the better aromatic blends I've piped. Although the casing's fairly heavy, it's not claggy, I get quite an even split between the ingredients: the coffee and caramel go together impeccably, with the coconut adding an exotic twist. The vanilla's omnipresent throughout a bowl, it works like the building blocks for the added taste: nothing flash, but a firm foundation.

This would be a perfect blend for those with a sweet tooth who don't like fruity blends.

Highly recommended.

This is a well-balanced aromatic tobacco. It is definitely sweet, and the top dressing is prominent, but it is no sloppy mess. In the tin, I was struck by how much this made me think of an Almond Joy candy bar. If you like coconut (which I do), you will find this one interesting.

The smoke is light and pleasant. The underlying tobaccos are not terribly distinctive or assertive, but I never got the impression that they were merely a delivery mechanism for flavorings.

Interestingly, over subsequent smokes, my first impression of the blend went from "wow coconut" to "wow caramel." I'm not sure if it was the top dressing dissipating, or if it was environmental, or if it was just all in my head, but it is noteworthy in a style of tobacco that typically doesn't change its tune.

I have only a three bowl sample from our pipe club in which to base my opinion of the new Limited Edition 2016 from W.O. Larsen. At first appearance, it easy to tell that it a “higher end” aromatic with quality tobaccos and a lovely smell that’s good enough to eat. Although the flavor profile is different, the appearance made me immediately think of Sillem’s Red or Green. Breathing through the unlit pipe it is coffee all the way. As aromatics go, it is pretty dry to the touch, always a good sign. I didn’t think that coffee & Vanilla along with coconut would work well together, but they do. The coffee and vanilla remain fairly constant and the coconut wafts in and out nicely. The coconut shows a greater presence as the bowl progresses. It burns dry, leaving no goop at the end of the bowl. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying the others in the Limited Edition series, but now I wish that I had. The 2016 is a pleasant aromatic that is worth the extra cost and the tin is pretty darn nice too!

Belgian Waffles covered in all natural Canadian maple syrup, toasted pecans, toasted coconut, with a cup of black coffee. A wonderful breakfast blend.

Smokes slow and cool. The flavor heightens along the bowl, and leaves no gunk in the heel. This stuff is absolutely great as is true with all Larsen blends.

A box of W.Ø.Larsen Edition 2016 was literally pressed to me in addition to a couple of other dessert blends, promising me a good discount for it, and I gave in. After all, I do occasionally smoke Danish blends, though I prefer the limited edition from Peterson for that matter. So I picked up a hundred-gram box, brought it home, and tossed it on a shelf somewhere. A couple of months later, looking for some new dessert, I stumbled across it and opened it. Of course, the tobacco, not being packaged hermetically, had completely dried out, and I poured it into the jar to moisten it. The appearance of the tobacco is a fairly typical mixture of Virginia, Burley and Cavendish, cut in a neat ribbon. Over the years, the Virginia has darkened, and the blend has become a fairly uniform mixture of reddish-brown color with flecks of almost black cavendish. A couple more weeks later the tobacco had sufficiently moistened, and I decided to try it, opened the jar and stuck my nose in it.

What awaited me was absolutely amazing, very powerful, bright and complex bouquet, consisting of cocoa beans, coffee, some nuts (I can certainly feel coconut, almond and hazelnut), vanilla and caramel. The tobacco wants to be baked, sliced and eaten like a Christmas cake. If you manage to get through this topping, a little deeper prunes, dark raisins, and a note of freshly baked bun become noticeable. For some reason, I smelled rum, although rum is not listed as a flavoring. Even the fact that the tobacco was in a bag that was not vacuum sealed, and therefore dried up in six years, and then was restored, did not affect the persistence of this bouquet.

Taste: the characteristic bread-and-hay and quite sweet Virginia note with a slight citrus flavor is heavily seasoned by the nutty, woody flavor of the Burley, which is additionally powered by the nutty topping, and therefore seems to have more Burley in the mix than it actually does. Cavendish adds a wine note and a taste of dark dried fruits. Caramel and a distinctive coffee note are present as well. The strength of the tobacco tends to be minimal, and the taste of the blend provokes you to take deeper puffs. At the same time the tobacco smokes hot enough and stiff, overheating it tends to bite your tongue, so you should be patient while enjoying it. Closer to the middle of the pipe the topping almost disappears, the tobacco becomes much softer, the taste begins to match what is meant by "classic Danish blends" - sweetish Virginia-Cavendish with small amount of burley. Nevertheless, the coffee-caramel note remains in the tobacco almost to the end. The tobacco burns into a dark gray ash of a fairly large fraction, not leaving moisture in the pipe (however, the latter is probably my merit - I did not let the tobacco get too wet during restoration). The aftertaste is coffee and hazelnut with a woody hint, quite persistent.

The smoke has a nutty coffee note with a hint of vanilla. Light and extremely pleasant, it is not uncomfortable for those around you.

Bottom line? An extremely light dessert blend that smells and tastes very pleasantly. Of course, fans of classic tobacco blends with natural flavors will not appreciate this. In my opinion, the creators overdosed the topping - if six years of drying in a tin couldn't kill it, I can imagine how strong the fragrance of a fresh mix was. On the downside, I can include the stiffness of the tobacco in the first third of the pipe and demanding to the smoking regime. In general, all of the above applies to any of W.Ø.Larsen's flavor blends. If you are able to smoke them slowly and easily, and you like flavors with an unexpected combination, you can fully enjoy any of those tins of W.Ø.Larsen limited edition that come to hand.
