Hearth & Home Delta Days

(3.40)
Delta Days is a first for H&H - a Virginia/Perique/Burley blend. We've combined matured red Virginia with a toasty sweetness with wonderful, rich mahogany Burley and a hearty amount of Perique. The Burley gives it more body and richness than typical Virginia/Perique blend, but it's smooth enough to be an all-day tobacco for those who enjoy something a bit bolder.
Notes: Introduced in 2015. Due to pending regulations, this blend is discontinued.

The mahogany Burley dominates this blend and imparts a woody taste, with rough edges that are smoothed a little by the sweet Virginia. The Perique brings both dark fruit and peppery sensations to the mix. I find a tinge of "Burley bitters" -- but that's not altogether bad here. Overall there is a lack of balance, but it is nonetheless interesting. Smoke volume and body are excellent. I can't work up 3-star enthusiasm for this blend, but VaPer lovers who occasionally crave a Burley-forward smoke should try it.

BTW, the "Blend Type" should be classified as "American", not VaPer.

Bold is the key word here. Bold but not overpowering. The red Virginia is a little spicy sweet, the burley adds a lot of body and the perique is plummy pepper in flavor. All blended together very harmoniously. Definitely a great after dinner smoke. This blend has won a place in my tobacco rotation. Highly recommended.

Hearth & Home - Delta Days (Signature).

I always enjoy a decent VaPer or Balkan to begin my 'Smoking Day' with. This is as good a blend as there is for that spot!

As you can see here Delta' is constructed of medium size, mostly brown ribbons, with a few lighter/darker pieces. Although it smells earthy there's a notable 'twang' of Perique in the aroma. The moisture's in keeping with a decent bulk blend: perfect.

The smoke? A smashing start to the day! There's plenty of chaetophorous, rugged Burley, a hefty punch of Perique, and a little sweet Virginia; this imparts a touch of 'calmness' to the blend! It isn't the slowest where the burn's concerned, albeit the smoke is only medium in temperature. Bite? Not me!

Nicotine: above medium. Room-note: not the worst.

Delta Days? As you might gather, I'm a definite fan! Highly recommended:

Four stars.

3/28/2019 - update

Original review was based on smoking the blend from a cob - several days ago I thought since it is primarily a virginia based blend to try it out in a chimney style pipe. Oh man what a difference - night & day. First half of bowl I taste the sweetness of the virginia, but the second half and things suddenly change - the rich nutty flavor of the burley and the peppery pirque shines. The perique maintains a strong presence all the way to the end. Just fantastic stuff - and way more complex when smoked in the proper style pipe. In this case and old Caminetto from the early '70's. The chimney style pipe changes the burning characteristics of the tobacco which in turn changes the taste.

So then, I've updated my review to highly recommended.

Taking a break from VaPer blends over the winter I've been smoking burley / virginia / perique blends such as Old Joe Krantz, Old Joe Krantz white and Haunted Bookshop - all of which I enjoy a lot and are all predominately burley blends.

Up front comment - this is a really strange blend.

Recently while shopping on Pipe & Cigars.com I ran across Delta Days and decided to give it a try - ordered 2 ounces. I've gone through about 12 bowls prior to this review.

The bag note has a very pungent smell of virginia. It arrived a little on the moist side - so I dried out about 1/2 ounce for a day. First off I got instant tongue bite telling me this is predominantly a virginia blend (high sugar level). The smell of perique (which I do like) is slightly noticeable and totally overpowered the burley. Quite an unusual bag note.

The first half of the bowl tastes / smells like a Va. but without the usual 'sweetness' - there is even some harshness. Then the perique comes out - that musty, earthy taste / smell and the nutty, chocolate taste / smell of the burley - both of which remained until the end of the smoke and sort of rounded out the sharp edges of this blend - but only a little.

The blend smokes cool, burns slow, requires several re-lights and smokes to a dry white ash.

To me this is a very unusual blend - certainly far different from any of the C&D blends with similar ingredients. I can't see it as a "go to" blend. It's very rough. Certainly not one I would buy again. It's almost as if the various ingredients don't compliment one another and shouldn't be blended together. Finally I might add that this is not an inexpensive blend at over $45 for 16 ounces or more $$$ for a lesser quantity.

Like the description by Hearth & Home says - "this is a first for our brand" referring to it being a Va / Burley / Perique blend - and in my opinion one that needs to be tweaked a little more to round out the rough edges.

Initially I found the blend sort of boring, but after a few days it started to grow on me. It is a rich tobacco taste, occasionally the burley comes through strong, other puffs have that spicy perique flavor. This is the tobacco I reach for when I don't want sweet and I don't want Latakia. It sits next to my tub of Prince Albert and jar of c&d bayou night for my "straight tobacco" moods. not a daily smoke but it ends up in my pipe a few times a week
