Gauntleys-Christmas 2015. I normally smoke natural blends but adore the decadence of the Christmas specials!
Firstly, there is no way this is a simple ready rubbed blend. In the pouch there's some shag cuts, some ribbons, a few long twig like pieces and one or two that could be broken flakes.
It smells very aromatic. The strongest addition is an alcoholic berry one. The rest mix into one as it seems to have had a myriad of additions included.
There looks like there are a few different tobaccos included. Some golden Virginia, brown Burley and jet black Cavendish and they're all of a good moistness.
Once lit it reminds me why I enjoy the Christmas blends so much, it's a deep, charismatic flavour.
The topping is pretty heavy so this hides some of the nuances from the tobacco; the main taste is very Christmas like!!
I can pick out some form of alcohol, maybe a fruit flavoured rum? There's a good fondant sweetness, a chocolate creaminess and a strange clove addition....Strange as it actually works well.
I don't get much nicotine from this. I can't see that being a problem though as if you're relaxing with this and a glass or two you'd probably not be asking for much N!
I think this is a good festive smoke. The only reason it doesn't score full marks is I currently have a Peterson Christmas edition in my rotation and, for me, they set the precedent in festive blends!
