I've been through almost an entire tin of this tobacco now and I have to say I've enjoyed it. Being of Irish heritage, I'm a sucker for whisky and this blend has just the right flavor of it. It burns pretty evenly and not too quickly. The aroma is well received by those I've smoked it around. Surely worth a go if you like whisky.

Opened the tin at the same time as Irish Oak and Sherlock Holmes in order to work my way through Peterson's Traditional Blends. My favourite tobacco's now are BBF, Flake Medallions and Holker Twist. Still searching for 'my' Latakia blend.

Basicly I smoke these Traditional Blends when I cannot decide what to smoke, be it in the morning as first pipe of the day or in the evening as first pipe before or after dinner.

All three fulfill this role admirably and Irish Whiskey to this date is the only Whiskey flavored blend I like. Mainly because the flavor -after the tin has been opened a month- is very unobtrusive but jus enough to endear it to me as a change from the other 'traditionals'.

Recommended to try and taste for yourself..

I found it sticks with you for hours, despite what you eat or drink. A nice night time smoke, makes you a little hungry not that is a bad thing. Also a strang bite that is rather pleasant on the tounge. Burns a little quick when dry, but goes out if to wet. I cannot seem to find a happy middle for it. A good tobacco that i would buy again and let it age about a year.

Notes on my first bowl: I opened the tin, had a sniff, as is my custom, and thought 'yep, smells like a Peterson blend'. A lot of their tobaccos smell remarkably similar, despite different casings and tobaccos being used. I'm no stranger to Peterson, it being all I could get for quite a while, and I currently have sunset breeze, luxury blend, gold blend, university flake, 3Ps and Irish oak under my belt. I was surprised to hear of so many reviewers likening this to University flake, as I found the two completely different. UF was horrible. Smoked harsh, unpleasant tobacco flavour, chemical casing, extremely damp and hard to keep lit (I dried it to a crisp, and that made it hold it's glow, but infinitely worsened the bite). IW was mild, too damp out of the tin (as all Petersons are), casing was present, but hard to find and define (french inhaling brought it out the most, as you would expect). I'm currently drying some, which should improve the flavour and ability to light, and as there was no bite either on the tongue or the throat that shouldn't be an issue. It left a slightly odd taste in my mouth, not unpleasant, but not what I would call desirable. The nicotine content was almost undetectable, as I have just come off a series of serious plugs (Warrior, Mick McQuaid, Yachtsman, 3Ps, Condor and others), but to the light smoker it should certainly satisfy. Good quality tobacco, as is the norm for Peterson, and a fairly natural tasting casing, which is sometimes where they can fall short. Room not was pleasant, my house-mate commented that it was certainly more of a tobacco smell than the casing. Relit twice (the drying should stop that, plus I cut my plug extremely fine and pack tight, so I'm used to an inextinguishable bowl), a little goop at the bottom, though the dottle wasn't terrible (again, I'm drying it). I have high hopes for this blend once I've had my way with it, and I may do an edit to update you all. €17.50 for 50 grams, which is horribly expensive but usual for Peterson.

IW is not what I thought it would be when I ordered the tin. I was excited to try it, popped the seal and loaded a bowl in a cob to test. Nothing.

It burned ok and needed a bit of drying which I attempted several different ways. One method was to let the tin dry open for a few minutes (up to an hour). A second attempt occurred by placing a bowl full on a piece of paper to allow it to room dry for about 30 minutes. Finally I put a small amount in the microwave and tried that in a bowl as well.

Lights were fine after drying and I may have tasted a mild coffee to chocolate flavor but absolutely no whiskey flavor. IW burned hot when thoroughly dried (a la microwave).

In an attempt to raise the aroma I mixed with some of the CB - White (an opened pouch remained in my humidor) to give a bit better aroma, but that didn't help it either. No bad aroma - its just missing as far as I can tell. Overall IW is unremarkable. Save your money for a Jamesons instead of buying the IW

I really did not enjoy this blend. It seemed too artificial; not just because it's an aromatic, as there are some aromatics that I really like.

I smoked it straight out of the tin, and after letting it dry. I was really hoping to like it. But for whatever reason, I disliked the taste. This just did not agree with me.

Govern Yourself Accordingly.

This is my favorite cased Burley ever. I smoke it regularly.

It is very important that you let this tobacco dry out extensively before smoking it (3-4 weeks)because it is not lightly flavored with Irish Whiskey but rather heavily flavored with it. If you do not let it dry you will go through a negative experience.

Smoked carefully and with skill - meaning not pushed but smoked slowly, this mixture is very rewarding. The tobacco is bold, rich, sweet and has a nice level of nicotine.

The dark Kentucky is awesome.

I agree that the tin needs a bit of drying out when purchased, but I still enjoyed the first smoke right away. The whiskey flavour is very subtle, but the blend is great. After trying most of the Peterson blends, for me this is at the top alongside the University, and is great experience when enjoyed with a tumbler of Jameson neat.

A very pleasant mild aromatic with no tongue bite and cool burn. Like all Peterson tobaccos, the base leaves are top quality, and the mild casing only adds sweetness and a liquor taste to a smoke dominated by burley and complemented by Virginias and Kentucky.

One of the best whiskey aromatics around, probably only surpassed by Sweet Dublin. Not artificial like the MacBaren aro's, and actually a stronger blend than you would expect for a such.

This tobacco fails miserably. This is my first Peterson and I can say that I am very disappointed. Dry and weak smelling in the tin. There is no whiskey smell in this blend, none. This has an odd tin smell, almost like someone with stinky feet took off their shoes. Dank and unbecoming. The smell makes me NOT want to smoke this blend. The flavor matches the smell. Odd and uninviting. Do not waste your money on this. If you want to try this wait till you meet a schmuck like me and ask me for my tin, I would be happy to get rid of this trash.

I love the taste of this stuff. The only problem I have is keeping it lit after 3/4 the way down. I don't really smell the whiskey, either. Still and all I love it. Maybe it's my inexperiance but I had no problem with keeping Irish Oak lit (which I love as well.) This tobacco will give you a little buzz for sure, which I like. So far I've really enjoyed all Peterson's tobacco I've tried. I'm looking to get my hands on Irish Flake next.

Irish Whiskey by Peterson (K&K current production) has been a very pleasant surprise.

It belongs to the list of the tobaccos in the British/Irish vein, opposed the the several Danish aromatics of the same brand (what the heck do Danish aros have to do with Peterson ?). It's place in the scale seems just in between of Sherlock Holmes and University Flake.

It comes moist in the tin, but not to the point of being unsmokable. I find it to be a perfect balance between flue & fire cured tobacco (the new tin calls tobacco from Africa, Brasil, India and Italy) and the whiskey favouring is very unobtrusive but melting the components and imparting a nice smokey-sweet aroma.

The body is just perfect, and leaves you always wanting another bowl. The strength never overwhelming, even IW is not the one for the first bowl in the morning. The smoke is creamy, never aggressive to the tongue or the palate.

A bit pricey but worth having in normal rotation.

I bought this tobacco in Moscow on 27/01/2009. I entered a shop, I bough pipe cleaner and in order not to run out of smoke I also bought a tin of Irish Whiskey Peterson. This trip was a total disaster, even the smoke. As soon as I went to the hotel, I opened it and in the beginning I liked the whiskey perfume that emerged. The tobacco was very thinly cut and too humid. I easily filled the bowl, but lighted it with difficulty. The perfumes that I was expecting, did not come out. Burley gave out its bitterness and Virginia a tonque bite (I am to blaim in this, because I smoked it moist and in a rush). From nicotine? Enough up to too much. The perfume in the room passes unnoticed, which is good.

Conclusion: I tryed an other smoke, wrote my review and in 2-3 months I will have forgotten that I tryed it. I hope to also forget a possible re-order. Only Connoisseur's Choice is wht I like from Peterson after all.

Needs attention while smoking. With a slow and controlled puffing it may satisfy you and keep the nicotine kick at the limits. Has a steady and cool burning.

I personally will choose something different with less additional flavoring. This is not for my taste.

I really enjoyed this tobacco and it has the distinction of being the first aromatic blend I would buy again.

I totally agree with the other reviews that suggest letting the tobacco breathe a bit before you are able to enjoy it. When first opened, the casing is so concentrated it does not smell at all like whiskey . The smell is like some kind of industrial cleaner and the first few bowls tasted like (I imagine) the stuff the Luftwaffe used to fuel the Me-163.

However, after opening and closing the can for several bowls, the flavor mellowed to the point where I could detect the whisky in the tin. At one point it smelled more like a scotch with a hint of peat. Lit up, the taste was strong and unique with a slight whiskey taste. I'm new to pipes and have found I prefer English/Balkan blends. Irish Whisky is strong and tasty like the English blends I've tried but less complex in flavor.

I especially enjoyed Irish Whiskey compared to the sweet aromatics I have been trying (and also enjoying) since I started with pipes in 12/08. Previously, I smoked cigars for ten years.

I truely enjoyed this blend it was well worht the money and sadly didn't last very long, my wife loved it after some dry time. I can't say it was steller fresh but it really really benefitted from some drying.

It burns nice and even, it draws smooth with no bite, it is suited for inside by the fire or outside by the ice fishing hole. It can be smoked in a car without being overly powerful and offensive. My wife and me agree on my Personal notes which have this as an 8.2 for good quality.

Will it work its way back into my rotation, perhaps only time will tell.

Scottish Steve 02/16/2009 Medium to Strong Medium to Strong Medium Tolerable somewhat recommended
For some reason, no-one in Glasgow, Scotland seems to want to sell my style of pipe tobacco - I can't get any DNRs anywhere now my local specialist shop's shut down, so have been limited to Peterson's University Flake as the nearest I can get so far. The place I buy it from insists on stocking all these cheap and nasty pouches of god-knows-what and refuses to get ANY Dunhill tobaccos in, "in case it doesn't sell". It truly is a sad time for a city that was practically built on tobacco trading. ANYWAY... I decided to try PIW as an alt to PUF. I'm definitely a Va/Per man, which is annoying as there are so many good ones out there and I'm limited to a pathetic selection. At first, I was really impressed by the tin aroma of PIW. It smelled rich and fermented and lovely. I later realised this was a con. First light tastes adulterated and artifical, then it settles down and in the middle of the bowl, for about 15% of the smoke, there's a rich, dark succulence I really like. But the truth is, this isn't a clean or honest smoke. It burns too quick, is subject to goo in the btm of the bowl, and no matter how slowly or carefully its smoked, its a bit nippy and hot. It feels like a botched attempt at a great idea. Anyone out there know any real tobaccos in this style?

This one really took a long time to creep up on me. I opened the tin in fall of 2006, found the smell rather overwhelming but gave it a few tries. I really did not like it at all. There was no taste or aroma of whiskey that I could identify, but some other very strong flavor that actually made me feel queasy. It's not the nicotine as I don't get that effect with Brown Rope, Kendal Dark Shag, etc. I finally gave up on it and put it in the humidor, periodically going back to it and liking it better as it aired-out. Since then I have tried and enjoyed Irish Flake, and having come to like that tobacco I found the taste of Irish Whiskey to be to my liking, as well. At this point most of the strong aroma has passed, and now I can actually detect the irish whiskey. It is a good change of pace for Irish Flake and I think I will likely always want to have some of this on hand.
