I liked this stuff when I first picked up the habit. It's available everywhere, so that's a plus. It was all I smoked for a while. I would recommend this to anybody new who would like to try out the pipe experience. Your taste will change with time, but The Captain is a good place to start. He's raided all of the drug stores, supermarkets, tobacco shops--a true pirate!

I will start off by admitting that I don't like, and I generally don't smoke aromatics. Yet, I think, for what this is, it's three-star tobacco.

Since taking up the pipe, starting with a pile of aromatics, and then trying a decent English blend and realizing that all my aromatics tasted excessively cased and harsh, and tended to bite my tongue, I've left them alone. Now, a couple of years ago, I was in a tobacco shop in a not-so-great part of Minneapolis, just to see what they had. They had copious quantities of the typical "drug store" blends, and I was uninterested. Not wanting to arouse the ire of the shopkeeper or his mates, however, who didn't look so savory, I decided that discretion was the better part of valor, and I bought a pouch of the nearest thing at hand, which was Captain Black. I never even opened it, just threw it onto the lower shelf of my tobacco hoard, and it's been through three moves with me since then. Today, I found it, and decided to give it a try.

Opening the pouch reveals tobacco that is still nicely moist, a good smoking consistency. This attests to the longevity of the humectant used, since I doubt Lane ever designed this pouch with aging prospects in mind. It's a pretty good consistency, with a few stems and tougher pieces, and the smell is of classic vanilla aromatic. Packing and lighting are both simple and straightforward.

The tobacco burns very nicely, and surprisingly, smokes very nicely as well. I could detect a little bit of a chemical tang in the first couple of puffs, but that disappeared quickly, and it provided me with a cool, flavorful (for what it is) smoke.

I think I can see why this tobacco is so popular. It has a very mild flavor, of tobacco and vanilla -not enough tobacco to be offensive to someone who wants to smoke an ice cream cone, but not enough cloying flavor to make the smoke unpalatable. Really, it's almost possible to forget you're smoking anything at all. The flavor is very light, and the aftertaste in the mouth is very light too, and not at all unpleasant. These characteristics would make this tobacco ideal for an all- day smoke for someone who had to use their hands and couldn't fuss and fiddle with their pipe every thirty seconds, and who likewise couldn't afford to be distracted by tongue bite or an overly complex flavor profile. One could get one's nicotine fix in pipe form without having to actually taste the tobacco. Hence, it's no surprise to me that this is very much a mass-market smoke.

It would also be very good for theatrical circumstances, when one really wants to be seen smoking the pipe. It's quite tolerant of heavy puffing without developing fangs, it sends up voluminous clouds of creamy white smoke, and it leaves a most delicious room note. Smoking this in a pipe with a wide-open draw, it was relatively-quickly reduced to naught but medium-grey ash. Would I go out of my way to purchase Captain Black in the future? No. However, it could prove useful to keep a pouch of the stuff around, and if I'd started off smoking this, I might have a better opinion of aromatics overall. I am envisioning using it in some blending experiments, to see if the lack of flavor with a pleasant room note might be useful in making heavy latakia blends less stinky, while not unduly mucking up their flavors. Can't hurt to try, right?

A tobacco that I would really like to get into but just can not. I remember my grandfathers smoking this and walking past a table with that plastic pouch resting there and thinking how cool, how distinguished how old school, i loved it. Well, fast forwarding to present and having tried capt. black, I feel its just too mild not enough tobacco flavor not enough kick to relax and just plain not enough of what i consider a pipe tobacco worth smoking, I will of course finish off the pouch and reminisce of those old folks with there shiny capt. black pouches resting on coffee tables.

CBW was my first experience with pipe tobaccos. After smoking my fair share of other blends I believe a review is finally in order.

Upon opening the pouch I detect a very sweet aroma, a strong casing somewhere between vanilla and mild whisky, with little tobacco scent. The toby is very moist straight from the pouch, almost too moist. After a few bowls I had to let it dry with the pouch open for a few hours.

It packs and lights reasonably well, although the smoke lacks body and the casing flavor is hardly noticeable after the first few puffs. The room note and smoke aroma is delicious, reminiscent of a bakery and toasting marshmallows - there is something unnaturally good about it.

If you want a crowd pleasing aroma then this is a winner, but due to the lack of flavor I find it somewhat dissatisfying. One other note on this blend, I find it consistently turns into a soggy mess by the time I near the end, so I advise against smoking it to the bottom.

I tried this tobacco just the other day for the first time. The room note is excellent but as far as taste goes,it just isn't there. Completely undetectable. Not just of the flavoring, but also of the tobacco. I need that tobacco flavor in a brand. It was as if I were puffing on an empty bowl but still getting smoke. I even smoked it in several different pipes including a cob, but that didn't make the slightest bit of difference. I gave this two stars and the only reason I gave it an extra star was because of it's very pleasant room note and aroma.

The brand does have a few redeeming qualities however. I would strongly recommend this tobacco to anyone new to pipe smoking and/or someone who has no prior experience with smoking tobacco in general. It also would be ideal for anyone smoking at say a family gathering or event, and is very unlikely to be offensive to anyone odor wise. This blend would also be suitable for blending.

Hate to give such a classic brand such a low rating, but 2 stars it is.

After having a right old moan about not being able to get Captain Black in the UK I actually got some from Germany, followed by the other two blends as a swap from a kind chap in the USA.

Was it worth busting a gut to lay hands on ?

Well, yes and no.

It's what I call a 'friendly' blend. What I mean by this is although it isn't a major player in the aromatics field in terms of taste and room note, I find myself reaching again and again for this stuff in between my pipe rotation.

It isn't a sickly chemical brew like some or a nasty biter like some of McBaren's horrors.

Yet there is something about it that draws you. Whether it's that slightly sweet caramel taste or the easy load straight from the pouch I'm not sure.

I've heard it likened to McBaren's Seven Seas blend, and I have to say it is very similar. That's true ; this isn't a million miles away.

I thought I might get bored of this blend but I'm halfway through the pack and still returning for a bowlful.

It's something of a favourite on here and now I can see why, without really nailing down the reason.

It should be interesting to see what the other blends in this range are like.

If you are a UK smoker and want to try this blend you won't be disappointed if you manage to track this blend down. If you can't then buy Seven Seas.

If you smoke aromatics you should love this one. The aroma is fantastic. Marshmallow, and maybe vanilla? I haven't had the opportunity to smell this from someone else's pipe yet. Burns very nice and even. I've never had to relight with this tobacco. On the down side It's tasteless. It costs a little too much where I'm from, about seven bucks, and there is some bite to it if you're not careful. I might buy it again if I'm feeling nostalgic. Id definitely give it a four in the aroma department, but I need to taste something.

Don't let anyone scare you into the idea that drug store tobaccos are all bad. Now, there are some really bad ones out there, but Captain Black White has earned itself a place on my list of decent tobaccos. I don't find myself buying a pouch every week, or even every month, but when I just want a good, sweet, simple smoke, this stuff is just fine.

This blend burns very well... I hardly ever have to relight, and it generally stays even throughout the whole smoke. The room note is very sweet, but I find myself getting a little woozy from the sweetness after smoking for too long, so I don't smoke this one unless I don't have anything else.

Like I said, don't let anyone tell you that all drug store tobacco is bad. It's all about what you like, and if you are a new pipe smoker, I think you may like this one.

Well what can be said about this blend that hasn't already been said. Good Bad or Indifferent This blend is an American Classic. It should be called Captain America. After smoking all the other top shelf blends of many differnt tin and bulk type latakia, Oriental Turkish, Flake and Shag ect. It is always good to come home to a blend that has been good since I was a kid.

It is my belief that this is one of those tobaccos that every pipe smoker should try at least once. For a drug store tobacco (and no, let me make this clear, I am NOT a "purist") it truly is a pleasant surprise. The wonderfully sweet smell of rich, black cavendish is just as delightful in the pouch as it is in the pipe. Room note is equally pleasant. Taste, however, is less than to be desired. And, in my opinion, the nicotine content is relatively weak. Other than that, an all-in-all decent smoke. Give it a try!

Tis the holiday seasonand and the Better/Half asked me to find a pleasant tobacco that would'nt be objectionable to the folks who dont find the room-note of my English/Balkan blends that I Love to smoke, as we make are rounds to holiday gatherings. So I figured what the hell and grabed a pouch CBW when I went out the other day. My Pops smoked this stuff by the tub full when it hit the market back in the 70's and I loved the room-note when I was a kid, Mom also never had anything bad to say about CBW. I think I may have smoked a pouch or two at the begining of my pipe smoking career back in the mid-late 80's until I was turned on to english blends in the early 90's. Now to get back to CBW I fired up a pipe-full this morning with my Cup O Joe and when the Better/Half got half way to the kitchen she was asking what is that "Wonderful" smell was, so CBW has passed the room-note test. Taste wise? well it's CBW I find it as a mild aromatic with some tobaco flavor. I like the way the burly peeks it's head out every once in awhile. I guess Pops knew a good thing after all. If your looking for a smoke that wont offend those around you pick up a pouch. You can find this stuff just about anywhere that sells tobacco hell you may even make a few friends who dont even smoke, and at about 5 bucks for a pouch there will be No Harm / No Foul if you dont care for it.

I wanted to like this. I really did. After three bowls I decided it just wasn't for me. The other reviewers are right about the chemical taste and it being cheap tobacco. The smell in the pouch (the pouch was about perfect on moisture content, by the way) was awesome. Wife said the room note was okay, but I've smoked better.

I've been looking for the pipe tobacco that my grandfather used to smoke...it smelled like he was smoking whipped cream. When I smelled in the pouch I thought this might have been it, but alas, no. If you're used to premium tobacco I wouldn't recommend this.

4 stars because despite its cheap price, this tobacco is simply good. Milder than other expensive aromatics like Sweet Vanilla, but it also costs half the price! The White pouch has nothing to share with some danish or vanilla-flavoured blends: flavour is wonderful, and taste too. The only defect is : too mild. But hey, it makes it also an all day smoke for the same reason. It will not ruin your pipe, leaving no strange aromas in there. Well done, Captain.
