| Nearly sickly sweet, tastes of vanilla and the head of cheap (chemical)whisky. No - or at least undectable amounts of nicotene. I can see why it's recommended to beginners, it's ready for a smoke out of the pouch, doesn't burn hot nor bite and smells good.
I won't be buying another pouch though.

| This was one of the first tobaccos I actually learned to smoke properly. First few tries with others produced a lot of bite. This one smokes cool and is good for beginners. I buy this at the Food Loin in town, but it does not smoke like it's cheap(around $4). Taste is very sweet. Lights and stays lit easily but bottom ends up sopping wet and won't burn. Mix in some fresh tobacco and it should relight.

| The first tobacco I ever smoked. I still enjoy the taste. Not my absolute favorite tobacco anymore, but once might have been. Just a good ol' standby smoke, that I rotate in every couple of days just to mix it up a bit. Easy to find at almost any store. Certainly when the "Apocalypse" hits on 12/21/12, this may be the only tobacco you'll be able to find easily. I've tried other Captain Black blends but don't care for them as much as the white.

| I signed up for an account just to leave my review. How this has 3 out of 4 stars is beyond me. It is a complete dud. Rather than stuffing it in my pipe, I may pour this stuff in my wife's potpourri dish; or perhaps sprinkle it on my son's birthday cake. Perhaps I shouldn't go from smoking Nightcap to smoking a pure aromatic like Captain Black White. In either case, this stuff ain't for me. (I'm a newbie, too!)

| If you want to smoke a pipe for others pleasure or just so you can be seen smoking a pipe then this is the tobacco for you. Zero flavour. Smells awesome when someone else is smoking it. It is also a very cool and dry smoke with no bite. It is the most fake smoking experience I have had to date. I think even those cheap toy bubble pipes would offer more smoking pleasure :)
If you are a beginner give it a shot. If your looking for a nice tobacco to bulk up on and enjoy regularly bypass for sure. Try some boswells or hiland cigars black gold.
BTW @ Mr. Bentley, how could something be undetectable and obnoxious at the same time? lol

| Nothing I can say about the good Captain is going to break any new ground, but I will say this. This is the stuff that stays in my travel pouch. I always have this trusty and reliable blend with me at all times. Is smooth and cool outta a cheap cob. When I first started the hobby I was close to giving up as the first few experiences werent that great. But I gave the Captain Black pouch I saw at my local Rite Aid a shot and enjoyed it.

| Captain Black White:
I wasn't crazy about it, but I never was fond of aromatics.
Having said that, this blend is not the worst aromatic blend I've tried. Paladin Black Cherry gets that distinction. Nor is CB White the worst OTC blend I've tried. Velvet gets the nod, there.
I agree with MagnusMaximus' excellent review: for what it is, Captain Black is fine. Certainly comparable with many other higher-priced aros I've tried from Boswell, for example.
If you like aromatics, chances are you'll like this blend.
I won't buy it again. If I want to smoke something sweet, I'll smoke Classic Burley Kake.

| An American friend suggested I try this as a change from my usual non-aromatic English/Balkan and Virginia blends. He smokes aromatics and swears by it.
I was a little wary, because I've always disliked aromatics, but gave it a try.
What can I say? It's "tobacco" for people who don't like tobacco. It's like the "aromas" you can get for the "electronic pipes" that produce a mist of nicotine and assorted chemical-laden fake flavours, only without the nicotine or flavouring. If this were music it would be played in elevators.
Quite pointless.

| I am comparing this to only other aromatics I have smoked. Not as sweet as CB Gold, but a nice smoke and good if you want more tobacco taste vs. CB Gold. Also, my wife loves the aroma of this vs. other aromatics by far. Tastes how it smells. Nice mild and tastey smoke that smells great.

| I just finished smoking this entire pouch over the last few weeks. I found this to be a please smoke, I enjoyed it and its taste and others in the room enjoyed the smell as well.
However I did find that it was very moist and I had to relight a couple of times. (this may have just been my bad packing) I did find that if you puff to much it will bite a bit.
Overall for a mild pleasant smoke I do recommend it.

| You know the phrase "Garbage in; garbage out"? I think this is what started that expression, because this is definitely garbage.
Why not just fill your pipe with imaginary tobacco, instead of spending your money on this crap? The effects would be the same- i.e. zero taste and absolutely no nicotine. The only way you can tell that you are smoking it, is by seeing the smoke.
The one advantage the Captain has over imaginary tobacco, is that it smells nice- but the aroma quickly becomes obnoxious and then eventually, undetectable.
I hate to see people recommending this as a tobacco for beginners. I had tried this 30 years ago, in my late teens- along with a few other drug-store tobaccos, and quickly concluded that there was no point in smoking a pipe, as I got absolutely nothing from it, except for seeing some smoke in the air.
That experience turned me off of pipe-smoking for 30 years! But thanks to the internet, I am now an educated smoker, and gave the pipe another try- this time, starting out with some good English blends, and some of the stronger stuff, like Irish Flake and 1792- and now, I see what pipe-smoking is all about, and am loving it.
If your 3 year-old wants to take up pipe-smoking, that is something Captain Black MIGHT be good for....
Another reviewer said it best, and I defer to him: "It's tobacco for people who don't like tobacco"!

| This is my favorite tobacco. My uncle has smoked this daily for as long as I can remember, so I have a lot of great childhood memories tied to the aroma of this blend. The smell of this tobacco when you first open it is pure bliss. Great room note, good taste, no bite. Perfect for beginners.

| The quintessential starter tobacco, and in my case the very first pipe tobacco I ever had. Extremely mild, no strength at all, but a nice enough flavor when it pokes its head out. Very smooth vanilla taste, room note and pouch scent. My daily smoke when I have it around. It isn't something you miss, but it isn't something you want to run out of. It can range anywhere from bone dry to moist when you first open the pouch, but as long as it's not brittle to the point of crumbling to dust, it won't bite nearly at all.
3/4 stars because while it's king of the drugstore brands, once it leaves OTC-land, nearly every other tobacco on the market kicks its tail.

| I finally finished the big tub I purchased in November, a day or two before rifle season started. I had just started smoking a pipe a month and a half earlier when bow season started. Had a pouch of this and thought it didn't get any better than this. After trying some other blends my interest started to fade.
Eventually it became too sweet, and taking the advice of someone below, I mixed with Carter Hall and this became my hunting staple for deer season 2011. I am happy to be through with it, however, and look forward to smoking something different this year in the tree. I will not repurchase this as I have discovered some aromatics that I enjoy more than this.
I will say somewhat recommended and only to a beginner who does not know where to start, but once the direction is found. You notice the chemical taste and a cloying odor that even a long shower has difficulty displacing.

| I was packing for my vacation and did not have the room to take a jar of tobacco with me so I went out a bought some capt. Black. I usually smoke a lot of the petersons tobaccos and I was unsure how good a drug store tobacco would be but I love my pipe so I packed a bowl and was very pleased with the smell and taste of this tobacco . It stayed lit and I really didn't have to tamp it too often. It has a nice cool smoke and little bite ( slow draws are the key) . It also has a very nice room note too. I totally recommend giving this a try at least . I think this found its way into my tobacco collection/horde

| Captain Black is truly an aromatic tobacco blend. The pouch aroma is top notch with its vanilla whiskey smell. In my opinon, this tobacco sometimes gets a bad rap because it is an OVER THE COUNTER tobacco. Captain black burns clean and stays lit for most of the bowl, and the sweet smell of vanilla and whiskey comes through at once. It burns cool and has a sweet taste of vanilla and whiskey if smoked slowly (which is the key to really enjoying this blend). I have had nothing but great reviews on the room note. This blend is a must for ANYONE who enjoys a good aromatic tobacco.

| Very Nice aroma in pouch. Perfectly moist in pouch. Lights good and burns evenly. Smokes pretty smooth and has a nice mild to medium taste. The room note seems to be very pleasant. I've smoked this continuously since I've purchased this pouch. I have found it has some bite, but not bad. Burns at a good temperature and seems to stay lit most of the time. I am very pleased with this tobacco and would recommend any other pipe smoker to give it a smoke. Will definitely be buying it again.

| Captain Black "white" is my main smoke on a day to day basis. I should note that I have briar and corn cob pipes in my collection and for reasons I do not know this tobacco is excellent in a cob but just ok in a briar. Non smokers love the smell of this tobacco, and it will stay lit for the whole bowl with some tamping from time to time.
