This blend reminds me of honeydew virginia laced with lots of vanilla, smells great smoked, and unsmoked, tastes great but burns hot be careful!

I bought the bulk blend of the Cup O Joes, 16 oz of Captain Black Gold, so don't think this is the same as the tin or pack of CBG from stores. However the blend from Cup O Joes is super, very mild, ribbon cut, pleasant aroma, very litle bite, hardly any moisture residue. Right now it is my favorite smoking tobacco as i can smoke it all day without tiring of it. Slight nutty taste.

To me, it is the second best blend in Captain Black (white is the best).

I've tried Captain Black Gold in both carbon filter and steel filter pipes. Carbon filter pipes work better than steel filter pipes with CBG as it is wetter than unflavored tobacco; however, I did not find real obstacles in smoking it with steel filters. It is is finely cut, it burns well and leaves but little dottle in the bowl. It tastes good and has a good aroma.

To add a little pleasure to your pipe smoking you may want to add a little whiskey to it (like wetting--not soaking-- a piece of cotton with whiskey and fixing it to the inside of the cover of the tobacco jar with some something like a buckle) and keep the jar tightly closed in a dark place. The next day Captain Black Gold would gain much better quality. In case you find that your CBG got wetter than it is, leave the jar open in fresh air (but not in direct sunlight) for a short time or until you get the level of wetness that suits your smoking.

In the absence of a more expensive tobaccos, White and Gold Captain Black are my alternatives.

My Captain Black Gold came in a very fine ribbon cut. I love the look of it. It reminds me of the old fashioned paper easter grass, the really fine cut kind that hangs together when you take it out. This blend's taste is comparable to W. O. Larsen Old Fashioned (possibly better) and is cheaper by the ounce. It tastes as creamy as it smells, without being goopy or wet. Kind of a Chocholate and vanilla base. Beautiful. One of the best aromatics anyone could buy. I recomend buying the tin, not the pouch.

Like Manischewitz wine, this tobacco is not great, but not bad. It does it's job, is available everywhere, and is over priced for the quality you get. If you are looking for a distinct Vanilla flavored tobacco, look elsewhere, this would be too mild for a vanilla lover. Was a decent smoke when I started out, not a biter, but is a bit bland for my tastes now.

I agree with most reviewers; this is a pleasant mild blend, although without a strong character, good for beginners or when you're smoking a lot, or when only the drugstores & supermarkets are open. One of the best of the brand-name tobaccos I have tried, although it leans more toward Virgina than Burley which I prefer. The vanilla flavouring is not overdone IMHO.

This also a good blending tobacco to stretch your supply of a more expensive blend. I have made my own "Morning Mix" from this tobacco plus plain Burley, mild Syrian, and a touch of black Cavendish; perfect for the first pipe of the day.

** NOTE to Site Maintenance: as other reviewers have commented, this is (at least in Canada) a shag (fine long-cut), not a broken-flake cut as stated in the Summary.

This one is my first contact with the world of pipes. The kiosk owner recommended this to me as the most suitable for the new beginner... But due to my inexperience I permit it to give strong tongue bites. This happened because it is a very moist blend and it needs to get dried first. After that, I mixed it with Skandinavik Mixture just to enhance the aroma and the result (for my inexperience) was delightful but “burning”. I mixed two low quality blends just to get the nicest (so far) room note. Captain Black Gold has a rich Vanilla aroma, has no black Cavendish flakes inside and I cannot recommend it anymore, unless it’s impossible to find something else to put in your pipe… If you are a Vanilla fan, try instead Stanwell's Vanilla, it just Rules!

I don't have the years of experience that many smokers on this site have, but I now know enough to stay away from this crap. yechh!

Update: ok ok, in all fairness I tried this straight out of the bag the first time I smoked it (Bad idea). Let this stuff dry for about a week in a glass jar and it's fairly decent. I puffed it slowly in a longer churchwarden-style pipe and got a very nice maple taste with hints of honey and almonds. toward the end of the bowl it almost got too sweet like a pure cane sugar, sadly I cannot get this stuff to finish off dry...

I truly enjoyed this smoke, i have been stuck on CBW and have not been to apprehensive to try anything else based on other reviews i have read. However, I was yet again in Rite Aid and they had it and i just had to try. I was actually impressed. I thought it was going to be harsh with lots of bite. not the case!

Smell in bag is great, color is wonderful, packed loosely( which made for a better smoke)

the taste was mild and not a lot like CBW, but some hints of vanilla and i tasted a little bit of a trail mix flavor (which i wasn't expecting at all), but the taste of the tobacco was definitely present, some vitamin N kick in it. I smoked it slowly and got almost no bite. Room note is not bad, doesn't smell as great as CBW, but still smells quite nice.

had a hard time keeping it lit at the bottom of the bowl, but other than that it stayed lit through almost the whole bowl. The bowl surprising didn't get too hot, unlike CBW which burns the hell out of my fingers.

Doesn't get four because I've had better, but for a beginner or on a budget, TRY it. its not to shabby!

(addition) I would recommend not drinking anything carbonated after or during this smoke, your mouth mite feel a harsh bite. I would also recommend not mixing with this blend, it isn't very satisfying.

Very pretty gold color. Hotter than the sun and burns the toung. The flavoring is SUGER and a lot of it. I is by far the Inferno of pipe tobaccos. Stay away from it unless you like it (-:

Greetings Fellow Pipers from the Banks of the Ouachita,

I am reviewing a 3-year of pouch of CB Gold that I found in an old Swisher Sweet box that I used to stash some pipe sundries. I was running out of my other more "serious" leaf, and thought I'd give it another try before dropping some coin on a new blend.

To my surprise, the leaf was still moist enough to pass the Charmin Test (squeezable with no breakage), and perhaps the incidental aging caused it to improve in performance.

The pouch aroma hits you in the honker like a teenager's cologne after his first shave...its obvious its an aromatic but not memorable in that after a couple of days I don't even remember what aroma it was. It was pronounces but pleasant.

Packed fine and stayed lit for me. I did get slightly bit by this bowl, but I am finding that may be caused by the pipe I am using as it burned wet. But I do seem to remember relegating this pouch to a drawer after getting mouth-raped by this stuff a couple of years ago. I would therefore classify this as a tempormental leaf as the problems may be the resulting combination of the piper, the pipe & the choice of pipe weed.

I'll recommend this to a beginner whose looking to experiment without denting the budget. I have not tried other CB labels, and may not ever as I am not intrigued to delve further into the brand. I'm happy at this drug store price point with Prince Albert, which trumps GB in my opinion in Price-to-Value ratio. Give it a try if your a floater, thats what makes this a hobby.

Without Me Its Just SOME,

AWE

My favorite Captain Black. I seem to remember it was good for blending (in small amounts). Also the only Cap'n with whom I could stay on board for the entire voyage. If I get this brand again, when I am on vacation and out of tobacco and can only find a drug or grocery store, it will be this blend, unless they have Prince Albert or Half & Half. I have some White and Royal lying around and try them once in a blue moon, but can never finish the bowl. I have to either jump ship, or mutiny and throw the captain overboard. Too goopy. This one is the least goopy, to me anyway.

1-29-11 Not so bad, really. A discussion on a pipe forum made me want to try it again, and it is not so bad. Not so bad (I will reiterate), but there are better.

I like the taste of this tobacco, how it lights, and the aroma. The problem I have is that it really bites my tongue. I'll put it away for a while, but it seems like it bites more each time I smoke it.

If you are not thinking of your health and if you are smoking just to smell good, like a sweetshop, here you go! Lots of chemicals and sweet bonbons awaiting for you.

This version of CB lacks a bit of taste and aroma when compared to the original white version. It does not have black cavendish on it, only golden cavendish tobaccos - burley based stuff. It is pretty mild and light but lacks the enjoyment the white version brings. Even so, this blend is much more decent than many other drugstore blends out there and it is IMO an OK smoke. Casing is not as strong here and a tobacco nutiness can be perceived if you smoke gently. Nevertheless I will not be buying it again... too bland...

Only previously trying CB White before, I was curious to see how the Gold differed, and you can definitely tell a difference. Someone stated below that CB Gold was more of a real tobacco flavor whereas CB White tastes like cheap vanilla ice cream IMO. So I have to say that I did enjoy this more than CB White, but I'm not gonna go buy a tin of it. My pouch was rather dry upon opening, so I might experiment with adding some moisture to see if it brings out any more flavor. Smoked in a briar, I puffed pretty steady and no bite and smoke was nice and cool. Flavor was sweet but not overbearing, and there was more hints of real tobacco flavor coming through. Cheers.

Having stepped away from pipe smoking for a year or two, I (foolishly)favored expediency over quality and went to a local gas station to acquire what I thought was tobacco but, unbeknownst to me, turned out to be what tasted like a harsh blend of wood chips and shredded underwear. Having tried Captain Black white in my younger years, I thought that the gold variety would be a step-up...but it was not the case.
