| I have to agree with most of the reviews here: if you have a choice, get Capt. Black White (or regular). It tastes better. This feels just lighter in every way. Also, like most people say, smoke it slowly and gently or it will cause tongue bite. Still, it's not the worst I have smoked, so I Somewhat Recommend it.

| This was the 3rd pouch I tried out of the Captain Black line and I must say I am satisfied with everything about this. Opening the pouch of ribbon cut tobacco you get a nice smell that resembles I hint of vanilla and gives a realistic preview to how it tastes. It has a hint of vanilla taste with some Mildley sweet undertones from the Golden cavendish. That reminds me this blend is 100% golden cavendish and nothing but. It packs nice and burns fine it's not a hot smoke so it's fine in my book. Room note is nice most smokers but some people (women) have told me it smells like cigas but screw them this tobacco to me couldn't smell better.
This tobacco seems to have the most flavor out of the lot of Captain Black pouches so if you don't care about the room note pick up this but if you want a happy medium of a good room note without much sacifrice in flavor then stick to Captain Black White.

| I'm not quite sure what it is about this one, but I particularly don't like it. Whereas the White and Royal initially grab my attention with their over-the-top casing, the Gold never even made a good first impression. The vanilla-ey-ness comes across as almost as chemical-fruity. Stick with the White blend if you insist on Captain Black.

| An oldie and a fair one. This is used when ever you are in need and all you can find is a drug store that has Captain Black. I'm sure that it works out well for a beginner, helps ease into the pipe experience. All and all it wasn't an unpleasant smoke but it wasn't noteworthy either. I would say for a beginner try it for someone that smokes more then once or twice a week move on.

| This was the first pipe tobacco i ever smoked. The day after i turned 18 i got a horrible pipe and this tobacco. I don't know if the pipe is to blame but i absolutely hated this tobacco. At first it was ok then i found a real tobacconist and got a house aromatic that made me detest cb. It is the only tobacco to ever give me tounge bite. Has no flavor. The only reason for the second star is the nice smell and the small possibility that the horrid pipe had anything to do with it. I may have smoked it in a cob as well tho. All i know is i hated it enough to throw the rest of the 8 dollar bag away after about. Five or six bowls

| Was feeling nostalgic and decided to pick up a pouch of this stuff.
The flavoring is something like vanilla?sugar cookie dough or (insert something sweet here). It was a wonder that it any pouch aroma at all, because like most (if not any) drug store tobaccos they have been sitting there for a long time, and in some cases a VERY long time. Wouldn't surprise me that a box of these pouches have been passed around store to store only selling a few each time through the years. May be possible that the last person to buy a pouch from that crate/shipment was your grandfather. SO take heed and be wary of 'pouched' tobaccos and instead reach for tinned/canned ones.
Despite this stuff being almost too dry to save, it came back well once put into a tobacco pouch with a button humidifier. With that said, maybe the flavor was destroyed from age and tobacco gone stale. I tried it anyway, and got through a couple pipe-fulls. The taste was fairly flat, not as bad as some (IRC THREE STAR BLUE) but the tongue bite would not let me enjoy this stuff no matter how hard I tried. Tongue bite is something to be expected from aromatics, Captain Black, and most drug store brands yet this didn't have anything going on that would make the bite bearable (such as Capt'n Black White's AMAZING room note and OK flavor)
How pipesmokers could possibly let loose a beginner on these aromatics is beyond me, its borderline sadistic.
(come to think, if I didn't like someone I'd tell them to smoke this stuff first and say something along the lines of: "this is the best beginner blend, if you cant deal then don't smoke a pipe".. Not sure if I've met someone that I hate that much and wants to start smoking a pipe)
Just stay away from this one, or any Captain Black's tobacco save for the white---and with the 'white' only smoke if you love aromatics, and are experienced enough to avoid the tongue bite and or tolerate it.

| Out of the pouch, Capt. Black Gold is steeped in Vanilla maybe not as much as the White version, but not as defined either. The vanilla here smells more like a Vanilla cookie or cake batter, but there’s something more artificial in the pouch aroma with this version. Like the White version, there is no discernable aroma of tobacco from the pouch.
Packs and burns OK. Careful puffing helps the bite somewhat.
Very mild, quite sweet, vanilla fades significantly as the smoke progresses. Chemical taste is worse than Capt. Black White, and this stuff coats the mouth with some unidentified substance - not pleasant. Simple flavor - not unpleasant at first - goes downhill pretty quickly. Mild notes of clove, burning paper, even plastic, creep in halfway down the bowl. Room note is OK, but not as pronounced or as pleasant as CB White. Seems to get sweeter near the end.
If you are in a pinch, broke, or cheap as hell. Stick with Capt. Black White. The Gold blend is not worth messing with at any price. However, good or bad, life’s too short for drugstore tobacco. Support your local (or online) tobacconist, and do yourself a favor.

| Room note is very nice. You'll get compliments from just about anyone. But if thats why yer smoking a pipe then you shouldn't be smoking a pipe.
First off i cannot reccomend this for a new smoker unless they like pepper tongue (not tongue bite) A new smoker will tend to try and puff this out like a chimeny and ruin their palate. Its considered an armoatic and armomatics are just not a good place to start. (read reviews on Carter Hall if you are a new smoker having a bad start) Then get some Carter hall.
If you are moving into cheap frills, drugstore aromatics then knock yerself out. Enjoy your pepper tongue. There are a ton of better aromatics out there to cut your teeth on besides this.
I'm sorry to Capt Black tobacco company, I just cannot recomment this blend and brand and I think with your international success and reputation as producing a cheap armoatic line then I think you have the experience to do much better and get back into the real pipe tobacco competition.

| I got a can of this from a fellow pipe smoker for Christmas. He knew that I loved Captain Black, but he didn't know which blend. I've been smoking on CB Gold for the past several weeks and I must say that it is a pretty good blend. Out of the can, Gold contains a good about of moisture. The cut is ribbon and it packs well with any method. The tobacco looks to be a predominately Virginia blend, with a little bit of Cavandish tobacco throughout. It takes well to a match and doesn't bite, even if you abuse it. But, for best results for flavor, sip it. For the first two-thirds of the bowl, CB Gold is sweeter than White. Down on the last third, it starts to lose its steam and the flavor gradually dissapears. The bowl will probably girgle some throughout, but it is nothing that a little sitting time won't cure. Although Captain Black Gold is really good, it still won't replace the regular. For all CB and aromatic smokers, stick with the white label and let this one compliment your rotation.

Most drugstore blend are good for new pipe smokers every now and then i like to smoke Captain or prince albert or sail just go back to my roots.

| Aaaaarrrrrgggghhhh... No offense intended to those of you who like this stuff but it is the absolute worst blend I've ever smoked. It's like smoking incense and it's even worse than Paladin. It is sticky in the pouch and it leaves globs of tarry goop in the bottom of pipe bowls. It tastes similar to the way coconut scented suntan lotion smells which would be alright if it brought visions of poolside bikini clad beauties to mind but the cloying artificial taste (of the tobacco - not the bikinis) gags me. If curiosity compels you to try it, use a cheap cob. It ghosts briar for a long time. Maybe the other Captain Black blends are better but I will never try them. If you buy some of this wretched crap I suggest you throw the "tobacco" away and smoke the pouch it came in.

| My favorite pipe tobacco of all time !!! I loved the smell of it as a kid, and I love looking at it and smoking it now. It is the most consistent pipe tobacco I know of in terms of all aspects you may think of.
The color is uniformly a beautiful bright yellow gold all through. The cut is so perfect, it is a beautiful medium ribbon cut with nice fairly long elegant lacy strands, and I never ever find even the smallest or thinnest stem in this premium blend. Wow !!! I can stare and marvel at this beautifully perfect tobacco for minutes. And it's moisture is just right.
The smell is perfect right out of the pouch. It is not too much, nor not too little. Just right ! The aroma is bright, modestly sweet, perfectly perfumed with some warm yet uplifting and energizing mellow honeyfruit, all welcoming and embracing.
Lighting is amazing. It is instant and even intuitive in a sense, like driving a BMW. I never light more than twice, I usually light just a little bit once and it quickly just takes off. Wow !
The smoke smells perfectly marvelous and is nice and thick white. It smells modestly sweet, mellow, fruity, and golden all in one. The taste is superb...perfect. I get this instant stimulation and energization in my mouth right when I light this stuff. It is like this pleasant widespread vibration...somewhat of a tingle. Never any tongue bite or heat. The more I puff, the better it gets, the more the body builds up into this nice thick creamy white mellow smoke, and the more I can taste. There is so much potential in this blend. There is this widespread fullness of an everpleasing and ever so present and well centralized taste of modestly sweet and just enough fruity and honey oaty gold tobacco, the great core and ever emanating essence of this great blend. Furthermore, you can actually pick up more and more complexity too. I can do whatever I want with this blend, I can sip on it and it will stay lit forever, or I can smoke it like an intake system of an F1 car and get a nice big plume of super full bodied delicious mellow sweet golden tobacco goodness. Surprisingly, this blend never gets hot, nasty, sour, or bitey.
Captain Black Gold is the best and most dynamic pipe tobacco ever !!!

| This stuff smells wonderful, unfortunately it lacks where taste is concerned. I'm not really a big aromatics guy, so this was okay. Tongue bite comes easily with this tobacco and it will leave your bowl and step wet with moisture. Let it dry a bit, or just make sure you clean well after smoking this stuff.
