| I had to give this popular smoke a try after hearing and reading so much about it.
First impressions were a bit intimidating, the perique burnt my nose and I could not get past the tongue bite. So I tried again and again until I figured out the correct dryness and level of rubbing the stuff out. After that this smoke showed its true colors.
Great va/per that sets a good standards for all others to be judged against. Will buy again.

| This is certainly a tasty VaPer blend. Half the fun packing your pipe with the cool coins. Not without a nicotine kick, this is a good after dinner blend to aid digestion. I will certainly aquire more of this tasty treat.

| I actually will refrain, for once, on writing ad nauseum about this one, because it's undoubtedly all been said. Classy look, classy scent, classy smoke. I don't find the Perique heavy handed at all, just a pleasant role player in this blend. This is also one of the few VA flakes I've found I strongly prefer to fold and stuff. So, with no quibbles to note, I haven't an issue with this being called royalty in the realm of vapers.
Four stars.

| Part of the whole thing with pipe tobacco is appreciating the history of the blend. Of course it helps if the smoking experience measures up as well. This one hits on both counts. The Perique adds just the right amount of spice to the Virginias and makes for a pleasurable smoke. Sometimes I reach a point I'm ready for the pipe to be finished, with this one I was disappointed once it was gone. The spiceness of the bowl seems to change over the course of the smoke adding interest. It burns well and has no bite. This will remain a part of my regular rotation.

| Now this is much better than Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls!
As where Duhill's Rolls are light to medium brown, Escudo is medium dark brown. As where Duhill smells of grassy VA with a hint of sweeteness, Escudo smells of plums, dates, and matured VAs.
As where Dunhill is definitively on the sweet side, and burns sowewhat properly, Escudo is more on the spicy side and burns well and evenly.
As where you search for any plum or peppery taste and strength from the Perique in Duhill, Escudo will unveil it. Far from as present as Haddo's Delight or Fillmore, this is Perique in small dose, just the way I like it.
As where in Duhill, the VA dominate all the way with its sweet side, Escudo tastes of well matured VAs, dates, tobacco and plum.
Recommended.

| This is my first review, so here goes...
I am primarily an English/Balkan fan, and so it's somewhat odd that my first review should be of a VaPer. However, just having finished a bowl, it seemed like a good time to start. I smoked this in an oversized Sevket Gezer meerschaum and I have to say it was wonderful. I didn't rub out the flakes, they had already fallen apart somewhat in the mason jar that I am using for storage. Instead I wadded up a large plug (probably two coils worth) and stuffed it upside down into the bowl. I followed through with two more plugs totaling about another coils worth. After two charring lights it burned down without further relights. That's unusual for me.
At the start it was mellow and sweet with plenty of thick white smoke. I couldn't really detect much perique at first, but the virginias were sweet and subtle with no bite or tanginess that can sometimes plague my sensitive tongue. As the bowl progressed I could detect an increasing spiciness from the perique and a slight tingle that was quite pleasant. By about the last third of the bowl the nicotine made itself known (I'm sensitive to that too), but it was easily controlled by slowing down my puffing. The spiciness built to the end but never dominated.
This blend makes me want to explore more flakes in large bowls. Giving it a 4 star rating means I will almost certainly be buying more. There are so many great blends available that there seems little point smoking anything less than 4 stars.
A very refined tobacco that benefits from some attention being paid to get the most out of it. Highly recommended.

| One word comes to mind, elegant. Those disks look and smell enticing and are beautifully presented. The taste is slightly sweet and tangy with the characteristic plum and spicy flavor from the Perique. A full bodied and superbly balanced tobacco that burns to a white ash. I tried this in a new Blatter Mini Prince pipe and it was an aristocratic experience that made up for all the misses and near misses when trying new mixtures.

| This has to be the standard by which all VaPers are judged. It comes perfectly arranged in flake wheels that I find it takes about 1 2/3 wheels to fill a pipe. The tobacco burns perfectly with no gurgle, no bite and the perfect balance of Virginia and Perique. A very satisfying smoke, that I have enjoyed anytime of the day. I do like to change off Vapers between Escudo, Dunbar and St James Flake, as each has a slightly different flavor . I would say that Escudo sits in the middle, a slightly bitter/sour rasin taste , SJF is the smoothest and has the Virginia out front while Dunbar has the Perique. All three fail the " Wife Test" , as she hates the smell of Perique, oh well! I find that many of the mail order places run sales on Escudo from time to time, so I stock up then. This is a must have tobacco if you are into VaPers. Try these in a cob, they really sing.

| well, i finally got my tin of escudo. as a relatively new pipe smoker, i've been dabbling in VaPer's early in my smoking life and so far so good. i recently reviewed st james wood and now it's time for this apparently hallowed VaPer.
what surprised me the most about my first bowl was that it was much more subtle than i expected, after reading all the posts i thought i was going to get knocked over the head and wake up in tobacco heaven. what i got was elegance, balance, and amazing smokeability. yes, a VaPer with elegance. this is quality tobacco and the people who make this know exactly the way to blend the right leaf and extract from them the flavours they want. the perique is snappy and peppery but never overbearing while the sweetness of the Va comes through for support lest the perique feels like it wants to take over. all the components of this blend are in synch.
pack your pipe with these beautifully cut coins and enjoy. no bite, not even a nibble. a bit of a nic hit, but i can live with that.

| My can is marked Alfred Petersen so I have know idea how long I've had it. I find this to be a tasty tobacco with a good Nic hit! Reminds me a bit of 1792 flake at mid bowl, because the flavor gets richer. Just roll some coins into the bowl with some shredded pieces on the top to help get it going. It smokes cool even when puffed hard, get a tin and try yourself! Assuming it hasn't changed with the take over.

| Ah … Perique. Tin opens to the familiar tang of aging cheddar cheese, on top of sweet dried fruit notes, warmed mushroom earthiness, and malty grains and sweet grass of aged Virginia. A VaPer blend heavy on the “Per”. Heady aroma but still well balanced. If you are a VaPer fan, this tin aroma should have your mind reeling and your mouth watering. If you don‘t like Perique, you probably shouldn‘t open this tin at all.
Fold and stuff. (Remember if you rub it too much, you’re playing with it.) Lights well, burns like a champ. Minimal relights get you to a fine ash finish.
Burning the Virginia gives us yeasty, grain sweetness of baked tasties, and grassy flavors with those dusty hay loft notes. The Perique holds it’s own, peppery, earthy, sour tastes balance the sweet Virginia. Since we “taste” Perique mostly with our nose rather than our tongue, Try “heading” the smoke like a fine cigar. (Without inhaling, fill the mouth with smoke, then push it up through the sinuses and slowly out the nose.) This showcases the quality of this delicious Perique, by pushing it to the foreground. This is a definite favorite, the best VaPer I‘ve had so far.

| The only way to truly appreciate this hallowed tobacco is to try any number of crappy VA/PER blends, and then smoke this. I think you will notice three differences. First, this has more flavor, and is a more well rounded smoke overall (I am not including blends which include cavendish. While I love that mixture, I think the addition of cavendish adds a component of sweetness and flavor which makes such a blend something different than a straighter VA/PER. For great blends in this category, try Davidoff's Flake Medallions or Hermit's Honor Blend). Second, this burns very easily and evenly, without becoming hot or grassy. Third, and perhaps most importantly, this is a very cool smoke (meaning no bite) for any VA blend. No amount of flavor can make a blend enjoyable if it is shredding your tongue the whole time.
With respect to the flavor, I, unlike some others, do not find this to be particularly sweet. The virginias do give it some sweetness, but nothing unusual or more than average. The perique is well balanced, and this does not seem to be super spicy. I would describe it as smooth, medium bodied smoke with a little spice and sweetness to be found in rich tobacco flavor. It is richer and more flavorful than Dunhill Navy Rolls, for example. The perique is noticeable in the room note, but not in a harsh way, and overall my impression is one of harmony.
With respect to the burn characteristics, what is really notable is that you can accomplish relights without increasing the level of bite, something that is often not the case. Of course, it burns so easily, and cooly, that I was surprised when I reached the bottom of the bowl.
This is an example of one of those rare blends which does everything right. It is not going to overwhelm you with flavor or nicotine, but everything is in balance, like the finest cigars (but not the taste, lest you be misled), and you do not have to fight it during your smoking session. This is an extraordinarily satisfying smoke, and should be considered an essential non-latakia blend to have in your arsenal. It really is that good.

| Perique is a dangerous thing. A very little goes a long way, and a lot can be the smoking equivalent of hot sauce. I usually steer clear of the stuff. But last week I met the great pipemaker Erik Nording, who has produced beautiful Danish pipes for over fifty years. I wanted to know his favorite blends. He mentioned his Beagle blend in the Hunter Series by McClelland. He also raved about Escudo as perhaps his all-time favorite. Over the years, I always passed it up because of the mere mention of perique in its ingredients. But one cannot ignore the great Erik Nording. After smoking several tins, I am a believer. This is an extremely high quality Virginia with just enough perique to add a touch of spice and prevent monotony. A natural sweetness comes through from the Virginias. The word "Escudo" means a Spanish coin and, sure enough, the blend is presented in coins which can be gently folded into the pipe for a smooth smoke, enjoyable anytime in any season. It looks a lot like the old Three Nuns but, oh so much softer on the palatte. This is a VaPer blend that can please anyone with a respect for fine tobacco. A little pricey, but darn well worth it.

| Escudo is THE vaper by which all others are judged and for good reason. This one hits all the right notes both high and low. The presentation is beautiful, and the coins can be smoked as is or rubbed out. The tin note is not anything exceptional in my opinion, but as soon as the flame hits the tobacco...heaven.
The flavors are what you would expect to find in a vaper. Coffee, toast, bread baking, sweet spices, sweet grassiness, fruity, lightly pepperery, and very complex when sipped slowly. The virginias here are top quality and reveal the true magic that lies in those leaves when blended properly.
The strength is a solid medium, and can drift to the strong borderline if your cadence gets a bit rushed. No tongue bite. NONE. Smooth and flavorful from first light to the bottom of the bowl. Moisture is just a bit more than I like from the tin, but easily remedied with a few moments of air time. DGT works well with this one and you get a bit of the toasted marshmellow flavor after the relight.
Fantastic blend in all repects. Four solid stars. Cheers.

| Escudos Navy… Looks like luxury bullseye flake without the Cavendish core, by the same company. I found too much overlap in the taste between these two tobaccos, to justify paying over twice the price for Escudo, I also found the preique leading the show in Escudo, with the Virginias buried in its spice, while luxury bullseye is just the opposite, the perique is just there, and compliments the Virginias, something I prefer. So which is best is your decision, but I did want point out one of the reasons I find this stuff less than stellar.
After several bowls of Escudo end to end, I found the next tobacco in my daily rotation, now lost some of its delicate flavors, a price I’m not willing to pay, because of too much Perique (spice) in my last smoke. I guess it’s just me, but preique has a flavor deadening effect on my taste buds, and a little goes a looong way. So for that reason, I prefer others. Bottom line, I forked out ten bucks plus S/H for a Virginia flake, not a tobascco flake, am I asking to much for at least a dominant Virginia, I don’t find that in Escudo. Guess I'll try some aging and see what happens. For what it is, 2.5 stars. My personal rating, 2/5
Addendum… This tobacco 50/50 with PS Luxury twist, addresses my complaint nicely.
