| It was the same as another dunhill called early morning pipe at taste and there is not much taste in this blend. The tin aroma also was the same as EMP. I am a latakia smoker but didnt taste latakia at this blend maybe a little bit?!
But its a good tobacco for me cuz here is hard to fine a non aromatic tobaccos. I bought 3 tin of this, its somewhat boring BTW.

| Positives: Smokes cool, burns exceptionally well, very creamy, is a two star tobacco if smoked in the morning.
Negatives: There is little to no flavor. The latakia and cavendish are only slightly detectable in fleeting moments. If this mixture is smoked first thing in the morning then it is easier for your taste buds to pick up the flavors, but it is still not enough to keep your attention. To be frank I got bored smoking this, because it lacked flavor so badly, and about half way through the tin I tossed it all out. It just wasn't worth it.

| As I opened the tin and loaded the first bowl in a Peterson's churchwarden I was totally anticipating the experience and... Yes... At first I liked it quite a lot, but then, bowl after bowl I began to feel something wrong about it... like if something was totally missing.
As I smoke it I notice how the tobacco seems to be totally lacking of any "bottom note"... Like if it was disembodied.
I think it is a very harsh blend and, to quote some other review, the more I smoke it, the less I like it.

| I like 965, and I find myself reaching for it more frequently, especially after dinner as a night cap (instead of NightCap). It pairs well with amber spirits or a robust ale, and I wish I could smoke it indoors in my study next to a fireplace with a Cognac in hand, which is the image that this conjures, but alas, times have changed. My first impressions of the blend were lukewarm, but the more I've smoked it, the more I like it. It does contain Cavendish, which is the blend's signature, and I think that's what polarizes its admirers from its detractors. To me, it adds some mildly sweet creaminess to the Latakia's smokiness and holds everything together well.
It's definitely worth a try, especially given its legendary status as a definitive English mixture. I think Orlik has done a great job with these Dunhill blends, and I think they hold their own in a crowded category, even when compared to the offerings of contemporary blenders, such as GL Pease. I enjoy the Old School stuff, and it seems to me that many other houses aim to duplicate this one. As with all Dunhills, you'll get a relaxing dose of nicotine, too.

| I purchased my tin about a year ago, had a few bowls , was unimpressed , and cellared it away. I just reopened the tin and was initially delighted with the new results. Good balance between the latakia and Orientals. I found a sour/sweet component and savory smoky Oriental taste. No bite easy to pack and light and it burned to a clean gray ash. I was really surprised at all the poor reviews, but maybe people are stuck on comparing this to the Murray blender rather than taking this for what was. I continued to smoke this off and on for the next few days but my interest slowly faded. The more I smoked this, the less I liked it, it was stuck in "no man's land" , it wasn't sweet, it wasn't a strong Latakia and the Orientals were stuck in the background. It was boring, and yes it does grate at the roof of my mouth. I don't think I have any reason to buy this again. I now see why all the poor reviews
Updated 2/4/12 I don't give out a lot of 1 star reviews since I usually only buy 3 &4 star reviews from this site, but I just threw out the remaining 1/2 a tin of this blend. This really is harsh without the flavor. There are some tobaccos that I will put up with some harshness if the flavour is there, but this doesn't have the flavor. Boring , flavourless, harsh, it gets the single star of "unsmokable"!

| Can you get more traditional than 965? This tobacco is a legend in its own right, and any pipe enthusiast worth his salt has tried this blend, and I am sure many have some tins of this in the cellar.
Dunhill 965 is the earl grey tea of the pipe world. It almost defines a pipe tobacco genre. It has been around for a long time and when you recommend an english blend for somebody to try for most this one would be on the list. It's wonderful legacy aside this blend is good but I feel there is much better on the market today. I feel that blenders like GL Pease have taken this wonderful template and gone above and beyond.
Don't rush this, it can bite. A little uncharacteristic for this type of leaf but it happens. This is a sipper as it tends to get a little hot and the flavors are not as good. There is cavendish in there so there is a slightly sweet undertone, which sometimes I dig and sometimes it turns me off.
Whether this is as good, or better, or worse than the Murrays version or the dunhill version I cant say. This review is on a orlik produced tin.

| I had first smoked 965 in the mid 90s, and quite liked it. Upon first smoking this Orlik version, I was rather disappointed. The tobacco seemed to lack the depth of flavor I remembered. This impression remained for about five different bowls from different pipes. I then decided to empty the tin into a jar and let it sit for about three weeks. When I came back to this tobacco it was an entirely different blend. The depth of flavor and toastiness that I remembered had returned. Though I still believe the old incarnation of this tobacco was richer, this current blend is still quite good.
Soli Deo gloria.

| So many pipe tobacco being produced by orlik, after sometime you start to notice similarities (and in some cases exact match/clone)
orlik bull's eye / davidoff flake medallions / luxury bullseye flake
escudo / dunhill de luxe navy rolls
orlik golden sliced / dunhill flake
erinmore balkan mixture / dunhill early morning pipe
and finally
dunhill my mixture 965 / davidoff royalty
I have no idea about previous offerings by dunhill or by murrays but my experiences with orlik made blends tells me; with their massive pipe tobacco production they are opting for the easy way out. Lets say I will start my own brand and choose Orlik as my blender. I'm sure they will arrange something similar to EMP, LM, NC, Flake, 965 in couple of days by changing the ratios in casings, adding a pinch more latakia or using a little more orientals etc.
So.. why should the pipe smoker of today buy the overpriced davidoff flake medallions if they can buy orlik bull's eye for less? or luxury bullseye in bulk for almost half the price. Same goes with golden sliced and dunhill flake, and/or 965/royalty. Those subtile nuances among these blends don't leave enough room to distinguish itselves for the experienced pipe smokers of old. That guy who claims he has been smoking pipes since 1912 and smoked thousand+12 tins of dunhill --well, looking at today's production-- he's probably right, that these new ones are nowhere near the old ones. It's so obvious now we're smoking a duplicate of the previous duplicates which made for clone companies. The problem is now the original and the duplicate, they all are in the same market, at the same time, just with different brand names, different tin art but either same or very similar content.
As I said I have no idea about the old 965, but the one I'm smoking right now, the one blended by orlik, it's so very similar to davidoff royalty. Well maybe not as creamy as royalty but the tin scent, the aftertaste, even the dryness you feel in your mouth after you smoke a full bowl.. 965 bites a bit more, a bit younger, a bit citrusy.. and I wonder, when Davidoff executives went to Orlik in hopes of something similar to Dunhill blends, did they ever consider, a day would come and they would be no more dunhill clones but the dunhill would be clone of theirs/others.
Since Royalty is one of my favorites and I rate it highly, 965 will get 3 out of 4. If I was smoking since 1912 then I would probably rate it 1 out of 4. Good for me and good for Orlik that I'm not over 100 years old *cough* will you be kind enough to pass the oxygen tank dear? Thank you.. *cough more*

| Orientals and latakia in perfect balance, held together nicely with the cavendish. Not too much of anything: mildly sweet, herbal, smoky, floral, Lady N. This is the first tobacco I have ever had physical cravings for. Maybe its the crack casing...
Update: after a number of excellent tins, I was disappointed to smoke one which had almost none of the characteristics I mentioned before. It was flat and boring, and indishinguishable from the tin of Standard Mixture I bought at the same time. Hopefully this was a one off situation. Sorry MM965, you lose a star, and that star goes to your London cousin.

| I feel a little guilty giving this a three-star rating, as my honest opinion places it at about 2.5. I've only been smoking a pipe for about 10 years, so I don't know the ins and outs of brand & blend changes; regardless, this was my first pipe tobacco and remains one that I usually keep on hand.
MM965 is like a warm, soft-bottomed lake in utterly flat and boring country - good for swimming, a little muddy, comfortable, and heimlich in itself, but with no scenery to speak of. Or maybe like a plump, attractive nurse or schoolteacher; always nice to have in your life, but neither exciting nor challenging nor ornamental. It is utterly standard; I will never complain if it's in my briar, but I go elsewhere for entertainment.

| Undecided on this one . My first few smokes from the tin were delicious - a yummy nutty quality to the smoke and a rich aftertaste . As I progressed through the tin however I found it became a bit bland. I certainly dont thinks its as good a blend as EMP . It took me over 2 months to get through the tin in the end and that probably says something. I also found it lacked any real nicotine kick . Room note is less than spectacular . I would love to have a tin of the old Murrays to compare this too. In general I am a big fan of Orlik blends but I feel they may just be missing something here. Its seems to lack any real oriental depth . Not bad but I dont think I would buy this again. London Mixture is up next for me so I shall see how that compares.

| My opinion is based on 4 bowls of this all in one day.
I must say I did not expect what I got. I really thought this was a blend similar to Midnight Ride or Squadron Leader, but nowhere near. It is somewhat harsh and very strong to me, a fist with a big "N" on it popped out of the bowl punched me in the face.
Latakia is minimal. Cavendish is not sweet. Orientals rule here. It is extremely cigarette like. Room note is also VERY cigarette like, and it lingers. My wife told me it wreaks of rally bad cigarettes. I agree. I don't know why so many like this blend, maybe ex-cigarette smokers.
I did not have a chance to try the original blend from the past. But I know that this one is horrid. Not at all pipe tobacco like aroma.
After about 20 puffs, there is some discomfort in the back of the throat.
I would not recommend this blend unless you are trying to quit cigarettes and moving to pipes, then you will feel right at home.
Again this thread reaffirms my theory that pipe reviews are useless. You have to try things on your own and make an opinion.

| I have only smoked this blend a few times, but I could not help posting a review about this stuff because I am so taken by it.
Amazing, amazing smoke. two words: SMOOTH and CREAMY.
This blend is soooo creamy. It must be the combination of the orientals and the cavendish, or maybe it's just the cavendish. I taste some faint resemblence between this and Boswell's Northwoods, and I notice that both blends use cavendish in them, so that could be it. Latakia and orientals get along just well enough to create a delicious balance of smokiness and sweetness... mmmmm.
Behaves well: minimal tongue bite, burns beautifully, and produces a nice light grey ash with a darker gray smoke.
It's just good, good, good. Probably going to spend my autumn and winter with this stuff.
Also, in reguards to the room note, to my senses, it smells wonderful: sweet and smokey (maybe a weight on the sweet side), but I know that people tend to think that latakia blends smell bad, so I went with the "pleasant to tolerable" as opposed to just the "pleasant."
Get some, you won't regret it.

| A bit disappointed with this one.
Very similar in appearance to its brothers LM and SMM. Unfortunately for this mixture I find those two blends much smoother. MM965 seems to sting my tongue a little. Not tongue bite, but just an unpleasant tang which LM and SMM do not seem to have.
I still found it smokeable though, and my problems may be associated with an additional strength, or most likely, my body chemistry(?)
A medium/full bodied camp fire/leathery English mixture with a bit of a sting in the tail (for me anyway)
By all accounts it was better in the old days. But then wasn't everything?!

| I'm not a friend of many words. It's too stressful for the readers. I have a simple additional pattern for all tobaccos like this:
I rank for this tobacco:
taste on the tongue - 4,0
flavor of smoke - 5,0
staying power (of taste) - 5,0
pain the tongue - 3,5
glow(down)behavior - 5,0
Filter necessary - now
from 1 (very bad) to 6 (excellent)

| with 31 years experience of pipe smoking i find this blend is not the same as the original when produced by dunhill.the whole smoke seems to be bland,i must say that dunhill london mixture is a far better smoke, more sharper and taste.another blend i find much better than this is erinmore balkan mixture, well worth a try.also when i was in london called into the dunhill shop and spoke to marc burrows who used to do the hand blends.he told me that 965 was the nearest you would get to the old babys bottom blend.i will not buy this anymore.
