Upon opening this tin I was greeted by a godawful smell that made my stomach turn. OK, I have just pointed out everything that I found bad about this blend, because upon lighting it I was in heaven. The good thing is that this is about the least important thing to me so long as the smell doesn't carry over and with IF, it doesn't.

My first experience with flakes was entertaining. I am not sure I am even rubbing it properly, but it smokes fine all the way down upon first light so I must be doing an adequate job. I feel the sweetness of the VAs and, quite out of character for the leaf, I get no real tongue irritation.

The Nic is strong, but this only adds to this one for me. I am a fairly new smoker about six months and it is not too strong for me. I highly recommend this to anyone as it has jumped up to one of my favorites after only two bowls. I do not smoke this at work, however, thinking it might make me a bit counterproductive. I also could not imagine this as an all day smoke as it might put into a coma, but what a treat for a nightcap when I just want to sit and watch the tube. I may review this after more bowls if anything changes.

As a recent pipe smoker I have been having a great time trying different tobacco blends. This is my first flake and also my first review. I have smoked about half of the tin so far and I am loving it. This is a great full bodied, straight tasting tobacco, no flavoring added that I can tell. I have read a few reviews all recommending some drying time with this blend but I gotta say I enjoy it more right out of the tin. It takes a light easily and stays lit without much problem. It packs quite a nicotine punch so be prepared. Overall I highly recommend this blend.

This is a good no nonsense flake. It smokes cool and the taste is great especially once you get into the 2nd third of the bowl. The flavors develop more after the first 1/3 of the bowl . I always smoke this in a smaller (group 3 or 4) pipe due to the fact that the nicotine is high in this blend. I recommend this blend!

I have smoked this twice now with mixed results. The first time was only a quarter bowl in my new Peterson Aran pipe! I folded then rubbed a slice and may have packed the bowl a little too tight due to the excitement of new tobacco and pipe. Because of my reluctance to repack the first bowl in my new pipe the tobacco burned very hot and was very hard to draw off, which made the nicotine kick me right in the head! The flavor reminded me of Peterson Irish Oak but brighter and fuller. The next smoke lasted much longer as I packed my cheap Italian brier that is well broken in. I experimented with cubing a slice and a half then lighting rubbing it. It packed very well this way and stayed lit Forever! The draw was much easier this time around making me feel less like an asthmatic. The first three quarters of the bowl burned even and with consistent favor. Unfortunately the last bit of the bowl may have been slightly to dry and burned very hot. I was to greedy and did not want to put down a bowl which had been lit only once (char light not included). By the time I finished the bowl I was dizzy with nicotine! Maybe I should have had more to eat before a full bowl. Despite both bowls ending on a low note, the flavor was excellent and entirely worth the wait of cubing and drying it. I will enjoy finishing off this tin, though only a slice at a time, it's good to know your limits!

Geat tabak. Packaged true to the taste of the classy gent. Smokey and sweet with a strength that compounds exponentially as the cherry sinks to its fine powdery demise. If you are not a fan of perique or english this is for you. It would pair well with a nice peaty islay single malt following a robust meal of gamefowl and legumes finished with a slice of punkin' pie. Certainly not for the faint of heart as it packs a substancial dollop of nic. Be warned. I prefer a churchwarden with a descent cone cake to level out the nic kick and the long stem to avoid the juice. A drop of tea frop this flake will surely send your tastebuds a packin! This is a definite staple for my cellar. Thank you Merci and Diolch.

This was the first pipe tobacco that TRULY blew me away. It was also my first flake tobacco. Perhaps, it was the flake genre, perhaps it was Irish Flake itself.

At any rate, from the first of the bowl to the last, I was captivated. I have never tasted anything like this before. This was one of the most refined tastes I have experienced. I have tried other Peterson blends (e.g., Old Dublin and Irish Oak), and I like them very much. This flake, however, is in a class all its own. In terms of taste, overall experience, and nic, Irish Flake satisfies more than any other.

I hear folks talk about smoking pipe tobacco down to a "fine white ash" with "no relights". That had never happened to me ---- until I smoked IF. It was probably a combination of the slow burn of the flake AND my appreciation and savoring of this flake.

HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommended.

This is exactly what I hoped this tobacco would be! I was looking for a strong and intense tobacco and after reading the reviews on this site, I decided to try a tin.

When you open the tin you can smell the strength from the dark flakes. As with other Peterson blends, the contents is a little moist for my liking, but it is easy to leave out to dry it for a couple of hours. The flakes break up well if you choose to rub them out, although they are a little hard to light if you prefer to roll your flakes and place them in the bowl whole.

This blend produces a full taste with a good hit of nicotine. Even a very gentle draw can produce an impressive cloud of thick smoke. The taste, to me, remains consistent through the bowl although the strength does increase if smoked in a straight sided bowl.

This makes for a very satisfying evening smoke and if you are looking for a stronger flavor then I would recommend trying this blend/

My original review is shown here (below for reference).Just would like to add that this is a gorgeous flake. My early experience still holds true but it seems, that the number of positive comments shows how popular the little tin of delight really is. A full cured flavour and a rich smoke. Great for end of the day reflection. Like all good pipe tobacco, don't rush it -take it easy and you get a wholesome and wonderfully enjoyable time.

Earlier review below....

I first tried this a couple of years ago and it's become a reliable tobacco in my rotation. For those who are new to pipe tobacco don't be discouraged by some of these reviews but do be mindful that this is a nice strong tobacco and you don't need a large bowl unless you intend to make you head swim! This gets strong as you go and is a slow burn flake that can taste peppery and I hav never experienced tongue nip. I suggest that you smoke this as an afternoon tobacco. I don't smoke in the mornings anyway as my down time is with my pipe. So, this is a fine tobacco. A strong flavour but satisfying and distinctive. I recommend but I personally don't smoke this as a frequent bac as I like a milder regular (eg: Petersons University Flake or St Bruno etc).

Go for it!

When I first smoked this I had a cold and it changed the strength of this flake. I could not feel the full strength or the nicotine until I smoked a second time. This is the strongest pipe tobacco I have smoked so far. That being said compared to a strong cigar it is still average to mild. After some experimentation I have settle on a combination folded and rubbed method for packing the pipe. At first this tobacco as a hint of sweetness to it that I did not expect. It is very pleasant. It then moves into a more traditional tobacco taste, very peaty and figgy. Kind of like fermented fruit. It then becomes stronger and I can almost taste the nicotine and a blending of tobacco leaves. I love this stuff. It is my favorite so far. It is also my first flake and I am excited to try more of them. Any one have any other suggestions?

I bought a tin of this based on reviews here and having smoked several bowls of it I am now writing my review.

Purchased at a local B&M in an older (small) tin. Packed appearance is very neat flakes, as another reviewer noted, like very dark, oversized sticks of chewing gum. Tin aroma...dark (brown/black), slightly smoky, definitive tobacco aroma. Flakes separate easily for preparation. I don't "fold & stuff"...rubbed out a single flake and allowed to dry for 30 minutes as flakes are a bit moist (even as my tin is several months old now the flakes are drier, but still need a little drying out). I have been moving away from larger bowled pipes and for the last year or so concentrating on Grp. 2-3 bowls. Packed in a straight billiard (very solid Grp. 3) and lit with a Zippo pipe lighter - took flame fairly well, needed a touch up here and there. First quarter of bowl can be a little misleading with this tobak...you get a hint of Virginia flavor and very muted sweetness and some smoke from the Kentucky but starts quite mild. Second quarter the strength and body begin to show up. The sweetness fades and the smoke comes forward (without overwhelming or being bitter). Note that the first half bowl has taken 40 minutes to smoke...this tobak ran a bit hot from time to time (with little to no bite though, took on a somewhat acrid quality instead) and I let the pipe cool. DGT'd for a day+ and just finished second half of the bowl...sort of like hitting pause while watching a movie - picked up exactly where I left off, full, strong, but never got hot. There is a nice nic thump to be had here, but not overwhelming. I recommend this for smaller to mid-sized pipes as it is a slow burner and a full-strength blend (could easily see this being overwhelming in a Grp. 5+ pipe). I really enjoy this blend and will be adding tins to my cellar as funds permit.

I would have to say when I was looking into this flake I thot to my self it can't be that strong............ boy was I wrong haha

This tobacco smells really good fills the room with a good aroma but it is way to strong for me I love alot of cigars but this is to much if you love strong stuff I would say grab a tin of this

It's not so strong if you rub it out or mix some Sherlock Holmes by Peterson it is actually quite nice

i give it a 3 out of 10 cause it smells good but don't let my opinion make you not try this tobacco because everyone is different

Excellent flake tobacco with some nicotine thump, but not over the top IMHO. This is coming from a guy who smokes Old Joe Krantz with Maduro leaf added for good measure. Pleasing flavor for the lover of real tobacco taste with natural smokey sweetness. If you have smoked Kendal Kentucky by G&H you will understand where I'm coming from. I would suggest separating 1 OR 2 flakes into approx. 1/8" strips and folding in half with the tips pointing upwards (this seems to work best for me) "Satisfying", is the one word I would use to describe this tobacco. Probably best enjoyed after a meal. This has come to be one of my favorite flakes.

PIF is definitively not for the beginner in the world of pipe smoking. This tobacco is not refined, complex or subtle by all means. When I opened the tin, the dark narrow flakes displayed a strong DFK smell that cleared off my sinuses.I could not perceive anything else besides that strong, smoky aroma. When smoked, it tingles the mouth and the throat, but not to a point where it is unpleasant or incommodating. This, my friends, is brute, sheer force of tobacco that tastes nothing else than pure, dark, smoky tobaccos with a punch of nicotine that will keep you going for a long, long time. The last third revealed sweet tones from the VAs. I smoke it only in my Bulldog, into which I can only load one flake at a time. Anymore would probably be overkill. Go very easy with this one...

Im fairly new to smoking pipe tobacco. Iv been smoking aromatics starting out but asked the owner of my local b&m what would be a strong smoke packed full of nicotine for a transition from 2 pack of cigarettes a day to the pipe. he recommended Peterson irish flake and I'm taking to his recommendation well. Ive only had one cig today compared to my usual 2 packs. The taste of the Irish Flake is very nice and the way it makes my nasal passage and mouth tingle is exactly what I was looking for. I'm saying Good bye to marlboro and hello to the new rewarding world of pipes.

Update- this got boring quick but it will be alright to keep around for some other time.

The first thing that strikes you is the tidy presentation of these flakes. The flakes are small and look like pefectly formed brown sticks of slightly thick chewing gum, perfect for folding and stuffing.

I think the presentaion was even better in the narrower tins, but the new flatter tins seem to contain the same flakes.

Although often slightly moist, the flakes light easily and you are rewarded with a tobacco that is deliciously sweet with a hint of pepper.

There are stronger tasting tobaccos out there, but they rarely offer the same levels of interest and complexity. For me, this is an essential tobacco.
