After a little exploration into the world of flakes, I stumbled upon this blend. The tin note was more of an earthy sweetness, like black coffee with sugar. Once I lit it, my mouth was filled with flavor. Very spicy, the fire cured flavor really kicked in. The nicotine kick was strong and even made me hiccup. I resembled a strong, dark cigar like the Camacho Corojo. I rubbed it out the second time I smoke it and that really tamed it. The intensity backed off to reveal an earthy, smoky flavor.

Tin note: earthy, sweet

Room note: burning ass

Taste: wonderfully rich and full. Not a lot of complexity, but really enjoyable.

Overall: Wonderful outside smoke. I enjoy it with a black coffee or with Guinness. Nothing else really can stand up to the flavor. At $20/tin at my local B&M, this is definitely an occassional treat, though. It is a nice change-up from my normal MacBaren Navy Flake, that's for sure!

PIF is a masterpiece of VA/BU, strong, well aged dark BU and DFK being dominant.

Not a crowd pleaser by all means, this is a real man`s tobacco with a rich, creamy and refined taste to it.

Steer far away from this flake if a bit of nicotine makes you dizzy, because PIF contains a generous dose of it.

Very strong and satisfying on its own. Similar in strength and composition to Condor and Coniston Cut Plug, but with a much lighter scent.

My favourite way to smoke Irish Flake is to peel off a few long thin strips, and fold it into some Mac Baren Virginia No. 1. No need to mix - just combine and insert into the bowl using the air-pocket method. A proportion of 20% Irish Flake seems just about right.

The result is superb. Similar to Mac Baren Dark Twist, but more flavourful. You can adjust the proportion of Irish Flake to the strength desired. The Virginia No. 1 is an excellent carrier, providing a harmonious base of natural sweetness.

Bought a tin of this a few years ago, smoked a few bowls and was favorably impressed but not smitten. Packaging and preparation, as with all peterson products, was perfect. Seemed somewhat harsh and "young" as some petersons blends can be. Definately a strong tobacco with a hearty N kick to it. I put the half tin away for a while (? two years?) and re-explored a bowl tonight. It had dried nicely to that pliable without crunching level. I thoroughly rubbed it out and packed it into a smallish full bent no-name 6mm filter pipe. Initial light was easy, a nice hit of virginia flavor which soon led into a nice combination of burley nuttiness with the occasional whisp of virginia sweetness. No topdressing or flavoring detected, only a bit of (pleasant) grassy fragrance from the virginia. At times it's almost cigarrish in flavor, which was enjoyable to me. I had to put the bowl down a few times and give it a rest because of cottonmouth from the nicotine (I'm a RYO cig smoker and former dipper too, so I'm no wuss when it comes to nicotine- this stuff is pretty potent). All in all, not a bad blend, especially after some aging and drying. A little one dimensional as some of the reviewers have stated- not much development occurs during the bowl, it just kind of gives up at the end with a rather dissapointing burley "brash" like an OTC burley. Burning qualities of my properly aged and dried sample were superb.

I think it's certainly a high quality and well thought out blend and would certainly recommend it as a "touchstone" for all those looking to experience such a tobacco or to expand their smoking horizons.

Definately on par with 1792 flake and some of the Gawith ropes as far as the nicotine content and I would say that this may be a good (although expensive!) blend for those trying to transiton from cigs or cigars to the pipe as it will certainly satisfy a nicotine jones...

I must admit to not being a fan of this tobacco. The nicotine content doesn't bother me (in fact it's one of the positives of this blend). I just found the smoke to be harsh and one-dimensional in flavor. I would recommend it's cousin, University Flake, as a more interesting and no less bold tobacco. There are far tastier flakes out there. But for fans of this style, Irish Flake is obviously the Holy Grail.

Picked this up from a local tobacco shop. Before this i had only smoked the odd assortment of OTC Burley's. People had raved about the nicotine content in this blend. Well i suspect that was a challenge so i bought a tin.

The Flakes really nice and this was my first experience with flake. Makes me want to eat the flake rather then smoke it.

The flake is just big enough to fold and stuff in to a MM Missouri Pride. It also works really well rubbed out but i believe there is a reason why they make flakes and that tobacco should be smoked as such.

I took 1/4 of the tin and decided i would smoke that and i jarred up the rest for aging. I ended up rubbing some of it out for blending and found that blending it with anything just took away flavor and ended up a bland mixture rather then just toning it down.

It smells like a mixture of pepper, boot leather, aftershave and cigars. Your quintessential dad smell.

To no surprise it takes the same as well but with more of an earthy taste. Although at the it soon began to taste a bit ashy. The blend itself is very hash and leaves a frog in my throat.

Well i finally cracked open the jar and smoked some of this. It had been aging for a little over 6 months. Let me just say its a major improvement.

This blend was a great smoke despite its problems but with just 6 months sitting in the back of my closet and this stuff becomes flawless.

The flavor profile has completely changed. Its very much similar to a maduro cigar. Although not as smooth as a fine cigar it still has a bit of a harsh feeling but its tolerable and some hot tea alleviates this completely.

Smoking is can be a bit temperamental at first. Rubbing the flake out solves this issue. But once you get the flake lit it stays lit for a long while.

This tobacco is the epitome of fine pipe tobacco. Its not tobacco you smoke while mowing the lawn. Its not "Lets clean out the garage" tobacco. This is the type of tobacco that you sit down with a good drink, a good book or some other form of passive entertainment.

A nice full body tobacco. As a long time pipe smoker I dont get the N kick. I do detect a flavor but couldnt put my finger on it Ive been smoking this tobacco for many years and I never get tired of it. If you havnt tried it pick up a tin it will be a tobacco in which you judge others by. Its a powerhouse so go easy and enjoy the ride.

This is a great tobak. Without a doubt it is strong, flavorful and meant to be smoked slowly. I think it is easily my favorite tobak. This is a really well balanced tobak.

A wonderful, nuanced and full blend from the people at Peterson who clearly know their trade. I don't know if this is actually flavored with anything but to me, in the jar, it smells slightly like cinnamon. Great, pure Virginia / Burley flavor in a format that is perfection itself in a neat, uniform flake but oh so strong. If you like nicotine, be sure to take this one for a ride but be sure your seatbelt is fastened first. By my gauge this blend is fully equivalent in strength to Samuel Gawith 1792 and only the stout of heart need apply. If you approach without respect you WILL lose your lunch - you have been warned. The stuff of legends.

My review could largely echo sirchud68's below. This is one of those blends that has an almost mythic reputation, and like sirchud68 I was underwhelmed by that first bowl. And, also like him, I felt each bowl brought a bit more interest. And, to top off our similarities, I too discovered that it went well with assam. (I didn't, however, put a tin in the cellar to age... not a bad idea though.)

Yes, it is very strong. Indeed, I think it's the only flake that has succeeded in making me hiccup with every bowl. But the taste grew on me, and I came to like it very much, reaching an understanding of its reputation. It's got a strong, natural, earthy-woodsy flavor with a hint of sweetness that kept me coming back for more; I even came to enjoy its rough-around-the-edges quality. I discovered it's also a good blender for giving some flavorful kick to its more genteel cousins.

A classic for good reason, but not the pinnacle for me. Yet I'm sure I will revisit this again in the future.

I'm not going to lie. I have anticipated trying this blend for a very long time and upon smoking my first bowl was kind of disappointed. What was all the fuss about? Ok, it's a bit strong, then what? But, as any good reviewer should do, I smoked my way through the tin before making a judgement. Each bowl brought a bit more intrest. A nice robust earthiness that is quite enjoyable once you acclimate to it. I have a tin I plan to put some age on, as I believe I will enjoy it much more. So, yes, I.F. is a strong tobacco and really good with an Assam tea. I'll have to wait and see if it gets better with age. If you like strong flakes, give it a try.

This is a great tobacco! It reminds me of the marvelous Lambert and Butler "Warlock Flake" of 40+ years ago - a taste I have not been able to find again since the regrettable demise of Warlock. I have smoked black Irish twist almost exclusively for decades - first as Gallaher's Irish roll, and then, when production of that tobacco ceased, I used to order thick black twist from England. Now, of course, it is possible to find both Samuel Gawith and Gawith Hoggarth twist in the U.S. For those who love the depth of full flavor released when smoking twist tobacco, "Irish Flake" will prove to be an enjoyable occasional alternative.

The Irish Flake tin clause “recommended for the experienced pipe smoker” must be read as “with an extremely high nicotine tolerance”, because this weed packs a gigantic vitamin N dosage. I think it may be possible to have a real nicotine overdose with this one, so be careful. As with the rest of the tin description, it really tastes like “unspoiled tobacco”, which could be great experience for some smokers. In this direction, I think the taste of this flake its great: very dark, pungent, earthy and with some superb woodsy-sweet virgininan notes. The only fault (in my opinion, obviously), as I have mentioned, is the nicotine level. To put this matter on perspective, suppose that, in a 1-10 scale for strength, 1792 Flake gets a 6, and Irish Flake gets 11

"True to the pure, unspoiled tobacco taste", I agree with this descripition, It's not a soft and round flake of virginia, instead is woodsy and dry in taste (not in consistence), for certain aspects it remember me the italian kentucky, maybe is the presence of a genuine burley base. Powerfull and natural, for an afterdinner smoking time I suggest, better if rubbed, don't use pipes with large bowls because become heavy not much in strenght but surely in the taste. When you open the tin the smell remeber something between cinnamon and farthing, but the taste reveal all but sweetness.

Type: Virginia flake, natural full ; Contents: Virgina light, virginia dark, burley (air cured, flue cured and dark fired) ; Cut: Flake, little and thin slices ; Humidity: Wet and takes a long time to dry (and is better fresh) ; Lighting: Not hard, maybe sometime a couple of attempts are needed, also it burns slow ; Pipe recommended: bent, bowl medium size, a Peterson fits marvelously.

I chose a meduim sized Dr.G pipe to try this tobacco out with. I took a single flake and rubbed it out and packed the pipe a little loosely. It fired right up without any need to false light. At first the taste was what I expected. Just a good straight tobacco flavor. I began sipping it slowly and discovered that the flavor impoves as the bowl progresses. The strong nicotine becomes evident rather quickly. This might turn off some smokers, I don't have any problem with it at all. Midway through the smoke I allow it to go out and rest a few minutes before relighting. When I did pick it back up I was surprised that it tasted even better after relighting. I don't quite understand this, but it is clearly richer and tastier. From top to bottom of the bowl, this is a very enjoyable smoke for me. Anyone that enjoys a straight tobacco flavor should give this one a try. I'm adding it to my rotation.

I also bought this primarily because of the Peterson name and Irish in the title. I love this stuff. It is smooth and creamy with subtle flavors. I like the clean tobacco flavor and the nicotine levels. The taste has almost a dark honey flavor that I can't quite put my tongue on, but is there all the way to the bottom of the bowl.

I like smoking flake tobaccos, from the look and feel of the flakes to the preparation, to cool flavors of the smoke. I smoke this in a medium dublin so one flake folded in thirds fills the bowl just right. I do have to relight often but says more about my inexperience and smoking style than the tobacco. This will bite you if you buff away like a freight train but sipped it will reward your patience. I'm at the end of my first tin and will be stopping to purchase another tin as soon as possible.

I could have this and SG Grousemoor as my only pipe tobacco and would be completely happy. Fortunately, they don't have to be, and there are so many more waiting to be tried.

Happy smoking.
