I really enjoy this blend. I've had my tin of it for a year and just opened it today and tried it for the first time. I really liked the aroma it had in the tin and found it to still be a little damp so I took out a bowls worth and let it dry a little before I loaded it. When I lit it and took the first puff I was in heaven. I like the full flavor and the smokey, peppery bite I got from it on my tounge. After smoking it for about 5 minuets I had to set my pipe down because the nicotine kick crept up on me and kicked my in the head. I thought I was gonna have to take a nap but I wasn't upset. Mid way I noticed a nice sweet and sour taste with a kick of peppery bite. You gotta sip on it though or you'll go reeling it's got a nicotine kick but not like C&D's Night Train. I really enjoyed my fist experience with this tobacco. It burns well and has a great flavor from start to finnish. It's good for relaxing with a cup of coffee or a glass of whiskey. It's a good Va/Per but I don't know about an all day smoke.

Mostly Red Virginia and perique, smoked on a peterson canadian and a CAO meerschaum. is sweet and peppery for most the smoke, it will bite if is push hard like any other virginia. Is it an all day smoke? well that depends how nicotine you like in your blends because this one packs a punch but nothing that will leave you lightheaded smokes better in mid size to large bowl in my opinion.

This one is a winner in the VAPER categorie.

For me this is hearty blend which I like. I love packing this stuff in a large pipe with one match you get a big puff of white smoke like from your rifle. Good tobacco taste with the right stuff in the perique department just enough to make you kill anything in your nose and like it. And the price is right!

When I first opened a recently-sealed mason jar of this stuff (I bought 4oz, but couldn't wait to try it - so it isn't aged), I noticed a weird and wonderful aroma kind of like fresh peat and a hint of vinegar. I know others have mentioned the vinegar smell, and it is there, but it goes away on lighting and there is no vinegar flavor I can tell. [EDIT: As I progress through my supply I notice this smell basically goes away after the first few bowls, so I recommend leaving the tin or jar open for a little bit when you first unpack it.]

It packed very well, and lit easily. It burns evenly and smoothly, with no tongue bite. The nicotine in this is stronger than what I usually have been smoking, a VA flake, which I assume comes from the perique. The perique is not so pronounced as some VA/Per I have tried, which is good since I enjoy the spiciness and depth of the Per without being so overpowering (although it is strong...)

The first 1/3 bowl was odd, with a definite earthy taste, but as the bowl burnt down it mellowed into a truly enjoyable experience. The tobacco burns quickly, but not hot, which is interesting. In fact, it is one of the cooler burning blends I have tried.

All in all, if you like VA/Per blends but want a rich flavor without being dominated by the perique, I recommend this blend heartily.

EDIT: This has become one of my favorite blends. I don't get tired of it.

Another really fine blend from C&D. There is a subtle sweetness from the Virginias that is almost (but not quite) overshadowed by the Perique. I like Bayou Morning in a medium size briar or cob and my favorite time to smoke it is in the morning. The Perique is kind of a wake-me-up, much like a good cup of coffee. This is a bit of a tamer version of Haddo's in strength and nicotine content. Bob and Craig, you done good! Four stars.

Update Oct. '07- Aging has caused the flavors of the VA and Perique to meld, making a mellower blend than the original. Whether this is good or bad depends on the taste buds of each individual smoker. Personally I liked it as there are plenty of VA/Pers with a stout Perique presence. When I speak of those, I'm talking about something like Bayou Night. I like both genres and I also like the fact that C&D makes them both available. BM is still a four star blend.

A little swampy smelling, and very earthy. If you like the peaty end of the spectrum, this may be for you.

The red stoved Virginia and the perique were of high quality and offered a mild and very enjoyable smoke. The tin that I tried had aged about a year half before I broke the seal. I will definitely buy a few more tins and set a few of them back to age for 3 years.

One imagines a Bayou Morning filled with much swatting of varieties of mosquitos so often in fact it would prevent a man from really enjoying the pipe itself. Sadly were it the namesake Bayou Morning that he was smoking as the blend isn't bad at all.

The tin note is not extraordinarily fragrant as many of my favorite VA VA/perique blends are, but the Virginia and perique is unmistakable. The note is light, sweet, organic, and fun.

In the pipe and lit the flavor and balance is modestly balanced and the perique content lends to the sweet VA profile. All and all a pedestrian blend for me that is a decent smoke that doesn't fatigue the palate. I see no fireworks as this is not a complex blend but a fine smoke indeed.

Smoked at 8 months after sealed storage.

There are lots of Virginia Perique blends to choose from including a few bulk blends like this one. Among the choices, Bayou Morning is good but not exceptional. Not much of the classic Virginia sweetness is present and there is a bit more Perique than I like. The aroma has a vinegar smell even when dry but is not noticable in the smoke.

If you prefer a ribbon-cut to a broken flake and like your Virginia zipped up with Perique's tartness and punch rather than in a cased Danish style, this may be one for you since it has a nice even cut and no humectants or obvious casing.

On initial presentation, Bayou Morning extends a simple invitation. The silky ribbony texture, a mellow, sweet-and-sour pouch aroma suggestive of dried fruit, forecast a flavorful experience, and that's what you get. Nothing fancy. Good, sweet virginias with a little spiciness from the perique. Steady, even burning with no harshness or bite. Not the driest smoke I've ever had, it always seemed to finish out with a wet dottle at the end, but no problem. The delicious flavor easily makes up for it. I could smoke this exclusively, were I so inclined.

This is some good vaper blend,I bought a pouch of this stuff and wished I could buy more . The aroma is a fig plum with a weak weak weak ketchup aroma. I lit it and the virginia was sweet and the perique was in the back ground and very consistant.

For me it is a mild vaper compared to Louisana red from pipes and cigars as far as I know so far but a high quality tobac. I am going to buy more soon probably half lb. since I am still trying vapers . very recommended.

Like the other Runowski blends I've tried, Bayou Morning is strong, simple and full of natural tobacco flavor. No frills, just pure relatively unadultered American tobacco. Brash and boisterous Virginias smattered with peppery Louisiana Perique hit the palate like a 5 locomotive freight train until it fades, chugging and clanking into the distance, at the bottom of the bowl. Some might call that monochromatic but I call it a damned good smoke. While I too like my share of heady English blends, this stuff never fails to satisfy. Along with Old Joe Krantz and Haunted Bookshop, Bayou Morning has earned a spot in my all day rotation. I look forward to trying more of Bob's blends, as those I've tried so far have been right up my alley.

A good tobacco, neither powerful as Dunhill Navy Rolls or Three Nuns, nor tasteful as Treasures of Ireland Limerick, but this is something you can smoke everyday and feel comfortable with. All in all it's a light blend considering its components, and never boring because the Perique jumps in and out throughout the bowl.

For now, BM is my VAPER of choice. It's different from the tinned flake version in that the virginias are not stoved. The perique makes it's presence known from the first light just about all the way to the end. If one were to mix Briar Fox and perqiue one could come close to BM. This favorite of mine is fantastic as the first morning smoke with a cup of coffee. Escudo has nothing on this wonderful VAPER. I will always have some on hand.

One of the first tins I bought as a new pipe smoker was Bayou Morning Flake. To this day, out of the twenty or so tins I've smoked, that remains my favorite. I decided to go bulk because I found a website offering the 067 Bayou Morning at 16oz for $25, and I figured the ribbon cut would be mostly familiar to the flake.

I was entirely wrong on that count. The taste here is less sweet and more earthy, which was noticeable from the aroma the moment I opened the package. Although I much rather prefer Haddo's and Escudo's, you should keep in mind that I've only been smoking for a few months now--so my palette likely prefers the more sugary taste of Virginias.

The perique is well proportioned, it lights and burns quite easy and smooth, and is clearly a product of quality. Any smoker with an interest in VA/Perique blends should definitely give this a shot.

But to be honest, it isn't what I was expecting, and I'm getting a bit tired of it all. I've been smoking this stuff religiously now for about two weeks--three to four bowls a day and it seems I'll never quite get done. I guess I was too ambitious..but still, for the price that I paid for this quality blend, I'm more than happy at the results.

This is my first attempt on a Cornell & Diehl blend. I am very fond of Vapers such as Escudo and Elizabethan, and thought therefore I'd try some American stuff. This is very good and very non-British/European..

The unusual cut makes the tobacco hard to prepare and quite difficult to light up, but when that's done, the tobacco burns very slowly and develops deep, musty and dark sub-notes.

It is not very complex. Compared to English Vapers which are much more delicate with their high notes, Bayou is more masculine and rough. The absence of artificial humectants makes C&D appealing to me. This is a nice change of pace for me, and I will be exploring the C&D line some more.

Update: 05/16/05. While cooking on the grill I popped the mason jar lid on a year old store of Bayou Morning. This has become an amazingly rich, flavorful, nutty and spicey blend. All cigarette and "thin" tobacco taste is lost to deep and bright flavors. I never had the pleasure of the original Escudo but descriptions of that seem to coincide with the layers of sweet, nutty, and spiced flavors here.

I decided to welcome the first day of summer, 2004, with my first smoke of Bayou Morning. This mix is about a month old now, and I have more aging.

I agree with others that upon loading the pipe, the appearance and aroma seem rather staid. Not the hallmark blast of grassy stewed figs that most perique/VA blends exude.

Upon lighting, there was a slightly sour/bland note. Not promising, I thought. I suspected I had perhaps either gotten a bad batch or stored my sample improperly.

No chance. The smoke soon began pouring out the flavor and aroma of manly man tobacco graced by natural sweetness and just a touch of pepper. It is a supple smoke that awakens the palate. Very few "morning blends" have ended up being so for me. This one, I *could* see as an AM bowl. Not harsh or strong. Halfway through the Perique kicks up but is still flavorful vs. damaging. This weed never once bit or gurgled. SMOOTH.

What amazes me about the world of the pipe is that so many variations on very similar base ingredients can be had. While still VA/Perique, this is markedly differnt from Stratford, Dorchester, 3 Friars, Redwood, and even a powerhouse like Haddo's. This fills that niche for all those who want a very straight forward VA/P smoke without the "refinement" of the UK offerings yet without the devestating strength of perique powerhouse brews.

While I personally may not smoke it all the time (just due to my unfocused tastes), I give it 4 stars due to the quality of ingredients and strength of their composition.

Bayou Morning is good morning, noon and night. Comes ready to smoke in a ribbon cut that is easy to pack and burns well.

The first portion of the smoke is piquant and zesty, as the bright VA and perique sing out their tart, spicy flavors. After a good ash layer is formed, the stoved component adds a mellow sweetness to blend with the now fruity perique and light VA?s zest.

This smooth blend of flavors continues until near the end of the bowl, when the perique overcomes the VA?s and emits a deep stewed fruity flavor to finish the smoke. Very enjoyable finish.

Really good VA/perique with just the right amount of perique spice and virginia flavor. This blend is one of the lightest in terms of perique and would make a good introductory choice for the uninitiated.

I had a similar experience to SaltySailor, i.e., the first several puffs were great then this blend took a turn south for me. It may have been too much perique and not a heavy ?nic hit.? I gave it a fair chance but the story was the same in several pipes on different days. I found it grew harsh and spicy and it drowned out the pleasurable taste that I experienced in the first several puffs. My palate did not care for what may have been an excess of perique in my sample. If you like perique this is for you, not me.

I rate this tobacco 5.0 out of 10
