| Upon opening the tin you will find long, dark and moist flakes of pure Virginian tobacco. I had to leave a couple of flakes out to dry if there was going to be any chance of keeping it lit. Not a problem, but I like to smoke my baccy pretty much right out of the tin.
I'll keep it simple as it's a simple tobacco. The aroma is deep and rich, the taste mild and mellow. What a lovely, no nonsense tobacco.
Although I prefer more complex and interesting mixtures (Frog Morton, Erinmore Flake) I did really appreciate the authenticity of this flake. Recommended.

| I bought this last month with a tin of SG's Grousemoor that was to be a birthday present I bought with money I had received from my brother. I wish I had chosen this as the present instead.
I always like to have a good whiff of a packet when I first open it and this one proved a leafy, oaky aroma with bizarre hints of green tea and raspberries. Good stuff so far. Packing and lighting, well, I always find these a bit of a pain when it comes to flakes, though that's probably down to me not taking due care and attention in my lust to get cracking with my smoke.
The smoke itself is knock out stuff. The flavour mixes a little oakiness with a good meaty flavour, almost that of a decent steak. The only mistake I made with this was packing my first pipeful to the brim and really had problems finishing it off due to the strength. Having seen the error of my ways, however, I have since filled the pipe half full, more than ample for a ruddy good smoke. The room note is nothing memorable but the lack of any tonguebite more than makes up.
On the whole, it is a little too strong, too potent, to be a regular fixture in my pipe but there is no doubt in my mind that this is an excellent quality tobacco that I am perfectly happy smoke when it is to hand.

| Full Virginia Flake, what's there to be said that already hasn't? Hmm...Well here's one for you. STOP HORDING THIS SHIT YOU DUMB A- HOLES!. Don't you realize that most of you will be dead by the time you actually smoke one third of your tobacco? And then what huh? Your spoiled kids aren't going to be fighting over ownership of your old stinky tobacco when you're dead, no, they'll go for the house. Maybe the car, what kind of car do you drive? If it's a nice car that still has a lot of value, hmm, ok so the kids would fight over the house and the car after they stick you in the ground. Then what, your one kid that none of his siblings like (probably has some kind of mental dysfunction) will be stuck with it. And God knows what he's going to do with it after you're rotting. Maybe toss in some grass and smoke one for Papa. How degrading!!!!! This is an excellent tobacco that you'd rather spend money on and throw away than give someone else a chance to enjoy it. You're tobacco will outlive you. If I knew who you were, I'd form a FVF rescue and break into your house and steal your shit. Let it be enjoyed.

| Well-fermentated flake. Worth a try but this will not serve as my daily blend. Probably because I smoke it with a V-shape bowl and did not find a way to master it.
For me this blend just produces too much oil during the smoke, a little disappointed.

| wow, this is nectar of the gods! the best tasting tobabacco I have ever experienced. I have smoked a pipe on and off for many years,However and unfortunately I have become a heavy roll up smoker!(the stress of postmodern living!)and want to stop inhaling the foul paper! I have found most pipe tobaccos unsatisfying - until now! I didn't realise what an experience a quality pipe tobacco could be - surely it doesn't get more delicious than this. Seems quite strong in the N department so I'm not sure it would be suitable for all day smoking - time will tell. A must try - super smooth with no bite and a nutty chocolatety flavour - a masterpiece in my opinion. Even though it was very moist straight from the tin - resembling moist cake -it burnt beautifully.

| "No one ever had the rainbow honey; until they had the rain" Jim Croce was right. This stuff frustrated this novice to no end. Mr. G's FVF did not behave like my MacBaren flake(s). So I left the tin open and kept it under the reading lamp for a while. My gummy, unwieldy flake now aquired the consistancy of "turkey-jerky" if there is such a thing. Not to be defeated, I laid out a generous sheet of parchment and proceeded to "rub" & "rub" and well you get the picture. Back in the can she went, exiled to the back of the shelf. After a month, this stuff was as dry as Moses' bagel. Then an epiphany; (pay attention fellow novices) Place the SGFVF in a quart size freezer bag, take the smooth end of the meat tenderizer your MIL gave the wife and beat the stuff choosing anything or anyone to think of as you do it. Now, here's the crucial step; put one of those nickle size humidor disks in the bag, get all the air out as you roll up and seal the bag and come back tomorrow. This stuff is heaven. I think FVF may even bite less than Clunee. In the end, I'd give it four stars were it not for the work it took to get it to three. Cheers.

| The description says it all. An excellent straight Virginia. It doesn't bite, smokes well, taste very pleasant in the Virginia hay/grassy arena, with just the faintest toasted/chocolate note on the end of a puff. This is a fine smoke but It doesn't match a true blending masterpiece such as Solani's Silver Flake. Silver flake is a 4 star. This is a 3 star for me.

| Just a natural, English tobacco. Very easy in smoking, much easier than Best Brown Flake. Taste - a bit different than BBF, more flat I think. It's also a bit stronger than BBF. If you want to start smoking natural Virginias - I think it's a right choice.

| Beautiful balance of top quality Va leaf. A bit moist right out of the tin, but the rewards of this smoke are unmatched by anything out there. If there is a tobacco today that deserves a legendary status that will be talked about for years to come with out question its SG FVF!!!!

| This is THE pipe tobacco that calls to me in my sleep. It is great any time of day or night. Goes with everything and in any situation. Highest quality leaf aged to perfection. Recently purchased tins have been very moist, however, so a great deal of patience in the form of drying time is necessary before lighting up. I couldn't wait last night after a very long week and was punished severely with relights too numerous to count. Even though the burn was very irregular and rather hot, there was absolutely zero bite. The flavors are typical of high-class Virginia: raisins, figs, grassy, and slightly herbal. Develops in intensity during second half of bowl. A classic and staple in my rotation.

| What else can be said about this that hasn't already. This was my first straight virginia flake. At first it was a little strong with my regular heavy puffing routine, but after I slowed down it really grew on me. I orderd a pound of it this winter and really enjoyed every bit of it. My only complaint is that I wish I would have orderd more since now I can't find it anywhere. Good Stuff, wish I had more.

| Unfortunately, I was unable to achieve the nirvana that most smokers have experienced with this blend. One reason may be the strength, which is beyond my limits. It also requires a lot of preparation and can be very finicky. The leaf used is exceptional, but there are other flakes that are better suited to my tastes.
Update: I mixed this 50-50 with Best Brown and found that both blends benefit from this union.
Update 2: I finally got the hang of this blend. Let it dry overnight in a large bowl. Then rubbed it out thoroughly. Well worth the effort. A delicious and cool smoking blend.

| Assuming a smoke preceded by all the necessary care and patience (SG flakes demand a good deal of foreplay), this is a blend that deserves all the accolades that it receives. It is a classic and a masterpiece.

| My first review on here, hello everybody. I am comparing this highly-rated Virginia to another highly-rated virginia, namely Dunhill Virginia Flake, which is actually the only other pure virginia tobacco I have smoked so far. I have put this review in the Dunhill section also.
I have only been smoking a pipe regularly for about three months having first purchased my old Duncan Delta filter pipe 37 years ago at the tender age of 16. At that time I dabbled with Clan (as you would expect, what a disappointment when that lovely sweet room-smell wasn't replicated in my nose when smoking the stuff), Holland House, Three Nuns, St. Bruno, Erinmore Flake, and Tetley's loose tea when skint, only once. It has been used on and off over the years for the smoking of various herbs legal and otherwise and has now returned to its intended use as an incinerator of fine tobaccos.
Here we go then for my first simple comparison of two virginia heavyweights. The big picture for me is that the Dunhill Flake is much sweeter and milder than the Gawith's. It is better presented in smaller more regular flakes and is overall much more delicate, or dainty. This presentation in a smaller tin, full of smaller flakes, gives an impression that in comparison to the Gawith product in its larger tin full of big rough meaty flakes, you are being short-sold. Not being a sad enough person to weigh the net contents, I cannot confirm this and I am sure the effect is purely one of perception.
The Gawith flake is much moister in the tin and I find that it does need to be dried for an hour or so before smoking to avoid your pipe gurgling, tongue bite and bitterness. The Dunhill requires less drying and you have to work it hard to get any tongue-bite.
The Dunhill in the tin smells much sweeter and milder although the Gawith smells more complex and fruity, like dried apricot and raisin. Not yet possessing the olfactory skills of other reviewers I am not able to offer any more elaborate distinctions once the tobacco is alight.
Both tobaccos are highly enjoyable smokes. Of the two I prefer the Dunhill.

| FVF is not a Va flake, it's THE Va flake. Pure Va tobacco and nothing else. Moisture level at the opening is optimal, don't bother drying it out. The packing I suggest rubbing it out but not so much, because it burns anyway for the excellent quality of the tobacco. Although FVF is not for flake novices, it must be tried.
I think that FVF and Capstan are two of the best Va's in the market.

| My bulk FVF was a bit wet and more than a little green tasting. I was a bit disappointed. Fast forward a few months..A bit of aging and suitable dry and now i get the FVF thing. A very nice Virginia. Now it's a battle between GLP Union Square and FVF. The sort of dilemma i like.
