This is a good blend. Let it get dry, if you try to smoke it straight from a new tin, then it will smoke wet, hot, and bite your tounge. I have had this tin open for several months, and it is nearing its end.

When I first smoked this blend, it was way too moist. It didnt smoke well, and tasted tart.

However, now that its got a bit of age and time to dry out it has developed into something very nice. The latakia aspect is there, but it is really a sweet smoke. It is similar to early morning pipe, but with a much sweeter flavor. It also has a bit of a fresh hay taste and smell that is quite nice. The orientals are also pretty dominant in the flavor.

The blend is a well balanced mild english blend. It has a lot of flavor, but none of the flavors are very powerful like in heavier english blends.

Worth a try!

I've been smoking a pipe seriously (paying attention to what I'm doing)and frequently for only 2 months but casually and infrequently for several years.

Pipe: smooth un-decorated Meerschaum ("Warrior" artist Tekin) Brand new pipe, first bowl.

Tin was 2 weeks old having been opened several times.

Bites a little but not paralyzingly when getting the char going on the way to the initial tamping. And again when re-lighting in the middle of the bowl.

Had to relight 4 times through out.

Mild is, as mild does.

Nutty, bit of fruit(like dried apple), not sweet. A very pleasant, dry and uneventful smoke.

Doesn't demand allot of attention other than keeping it lit so Id probably enjoy this mid day while reading or focused on some distracting activity.

Keeping it in stock.

Known as Standard Mixture Mellow this blend is a very nice English Mixture.... I appreciate it a lot since it has a mellow taste... very nice for any pipe smoker, mainly those ones who enjoy soft tobaccos. Give it a try if you didn't smoke it yet... :D

Even after 7 years in the tin, it still looks and smells new and fresh upon opening. The Oriental leaf is prominent, the Latakia present but not dominant, and the sweet Virginia provides an excellent foundation. It is an excellent English.

As others have noted, it bites if smoked vigorously. Nicotine dose is moderate.

Overall, an excellent smoke, an all-day English, but not a Nirvana experience.

Update, January 2013: I purchased a tin of the new stuff and thought it would be fun to compare and contrast Murray's versus Orlik's.

To begin, the tin note of the Murray's is classic English: Orientals with a touch of Latakia. Orlik's in the tin is much stronger smelling, sour/acidic and fruity. And the new Mellow blend has more bright orange color to the blend.

I suspect that Orlik has added a little sugar-water topping that makes their version a little more moist and causes a little more tongue-bite. But by mid- bowl the bite has disappeared from both versions.

I smoked both in identical small acorn briars, alternating between the two. They both paired well with my glass of Laphroiag. It was a wonderful experience, a great indulgence.

I could nit-pick and say that the Murray's is more 'mild' and the Orlik's less 'mellow.' Perhaps the older stuff has a broader flavor range. But really, the main difference was that the Murray's tin was 7 years older. I suspect that with age, I would not be able to tell them apart. Smoking them separately, I felt a tad more nicotine with Orlik's, earning the name 'Mellow.' But they are both still in the moderate range of Vitamin N.

Overall, I think Orlik nailed it and has faithfully reproduced this blend.

If mild is what you want, this is a decent place to go. It can bite slightly if you puff too fast. There's not a ton of complexity, but it's not designed to give you that. I'd say it's more for those starting on English blends, so don't expect the latakia or the orientals to hit you between the eyes. If you have to add stronger elements to enjoy it, you've bought the wrong tobacco. I like it when I want something light, but need a little latakia in my life. This will do that for you. Take it for what it's supposed to be and you won't be disappointed.

This is a very mild ... er, I guess now that's "mellow," blend. I think this would be a good blend if an aromatics smoker wanted to get a hint of what an English-style blend is like. If you've been away from pipe smoking for a while, this is a fine blend to get you back into the hobby. So I recommend it for those purposes.

Govern Yourself Accordingly.

Recommended for 'light' smokers, only. I cannot imagine that *this* is Standard Mixture medium's toned down version! It's very light, yogurtish, actually unnoticable. Yet, the tobaccos used here are first class. Added a pinch of Nightcap and a good pinch of 965 to give it a bit more life. Probably won't buy this again, though it is not bad, just too mild for my taste. 2.5 of 5.

This blend just isn't doing it for me. I understand it is supposed to be light, but it is almost nonexistent. I feel like I am wasting time when I am smoking this, rather than enjoying the experience. I muscled through my 2 oz. in 3 months and will not replace. I do give it two stars for the quality of leaf and absence of any chemicals that I can detect and I can see that some people do like it. So YMMV, and probably will.

Having assigned the likes of TBS and it's imposter B.Sasieni to the ash heap, and having found little to love about My Mix.' 965, Standard Mixture Mellow fits quite nicely into the middle of my day. I don't think that this Latakia light blend will ever replace London Mixture, but there are times when even my revered DLM can spoil things for my night of reverie with my beloved Nightcap. Good stuff not a world beater by any means, but good. Next order, I'll try what is now marketed as plain-old Standard Mixture which I'm told is really SM Medium. While we're at it Mr. editor; how about getting rid of the "Mild" assignation, the EU killed the use of that word long ago, it's Mellow!

I smoke and review a lot of tobaccos, but I always return to Dunhill as it’s my main brand of choice, Murray’s for some and Orlik for others. Standard Mixture Mild (Mellow), is one that I just can’t seem to latch onto. Most Dunhill blends have a nice kick from Lady N and the tobacco is always of high quality and that is the case with SMM. It’s the blend itself that just doesn’t work. The flavors are simply too flat. It burns cleanly, packs easily blah, blah, blah, but in a word, it’s boring. This review is based on my only two remaining tins of the Murray’s incarnation. The age on the tins hasn’t added much to the flavor. I have purchased two new Orlik tins and when I finally open one, I will update the review if warranted.

This review is of the Orlik version.

I like mild (or "mellow") light English tobaccos as a first pipe of the day and SMM fits that bill. The Latakia is very much in the background. The Orientals are forward with some nice sweetness from the Virginias. In all, SMM is a nice blend in this category, burning to a fine ash and smoking cool. I'm putting some more away from cellaring. Recommended.

I'm not a real English blend smoker but I do have a number of tins of various English-style mixtures that I crack open from time to time. Usually I find them overly spicy in the mouth and suffocating but this one is different, seems to me.

Other reviewers have already written about the blend's name change to Standard Mixture Mellow rather than Mild. Whether "mellow" or "mild" this blend suits my taste a little better than some of the heavier blends. The tin aroma is subtly English in character, the taste spicy but not overpowering, and the room note is a nice, warm campfire aroma that doesn't overstay its welcome.

And, I suppose we could all grouse about the loss of the old Murray's days, but there's probably no going back now and we simply have to decide whether we can tolerate the current Dunhill offerings or change to something else. (But, God! Wasn't that Baby's Bottom a treat?)

I like Dunhill mixtures, too. They are all quality tobaccos. SM Mellow is one English blend I will add to my regular rotation.

This is a beautiful mixture by Dunhill. I bought it on a whim. I found the mixture to be quite relaxing, instantaneously creating a moment of reflection when I hadn't asked for one. The aftertaste is something to behold. Since I have been enjoying stronger blends recently, this really was a nice break from flame thrower blends.

I note that the tin description has changed to: "A Mellow Blend of Virginia and Turkish Tobaccos - Soft Delicate Flavor"

Not having smoked any Dunhill Standard Mixture before I can't say that this is the old "Mild" or another blend entirely. However, after my dismal experience with the current MM965, I held little hope for this when I cracked the tin (only a week ago); it looked too similar to that impostor. However, one whiff of the tobacco contained therein piqued my interest. This smelled like a Dunnie - and for more like the classic 965 than the new 965 does (even if it doesn't purport to be like it.)

Lighting up I noted the similar flavor to the current 965, but here rather than being overwhelming to the point of rudeness the experience was very pleasurable. If this had been in my 965 tin I might complain it had changed but I would still like it. The Latakia here, while still the same as in 965, is in greater quantity and that I do appreciate. This is tasty, almost addictive. The Orientals are noticeable to the eye and on the tongue.

I bought the only tin I could find and it is dwindling quickly.

I almost hesitated to give this four stars as I have yet to crack my tin of Standard Mixture, but it does deserve it. I will buy more, if any shows up.

UPDATE: 10/10/12 My second tin of this was disappointingly different and NOT in a good way. This one was horribly astringent and very bitey - something I rarely encounter. I would lower the rating to two stars but an average would really be three.

As a comparatively new pipe smoker and one who is trying to venture out from the aromatics and aromatic/English blends, I find this one a nice move toward real English tobaccos. The tin note is a bit weak and just a wee bit sour. The thin ribbon cut packed well in my narrow bowl (11/16”), and burned without more than two relights to the bottom. Mild mannered all the way, starting out thin…spicier in the middle and a bit peppery toward the end where I heard a gurgle or two and the bowl got a little hotter than I like it, but that’s probably due the fact that I was trying to draw enough to get some real flavor out of it. I think it’s a great introduction to English blends and is now one of my favorites.

I find this a bit too mild for my liking, even EMP and Skiff are stronger than this (on the Lat side).

I got to try this with the re-introduction of Dunhill blends in England, and I bought this without looking at the contents. That done, it does pack and light easily and burns all the way down without a messy dottle. For someone trying Latakia / English blends for the first time, this might be a winner. Vitamin N content is almost negligable which for me is another dissapointment, on the plus side, a good quality leaf is used (or IMHO, wasted) but still two stars as previously stated, good for those starting out on Latakia or English forrays.

I smoked Dunhill Standard Mild for years. It's now called Standard Mellow. I find the new tobacco to be very good. The ribbon cut is a little thinner now and the color isn't quite as light yellow. I've only smoked three bowls, but find it be be of a high quality. I used to also smoke EMP because it was available in bulk and I love it. I have a new tin of that and will probably get that in bulk if it becomes available. I like to stick to one tobacco as a rule. If I switch around, I lose my ability to savor the subtle qualities of the milder English blends. Standard Mild/Mellow is subtle, but very tasty and easy on the tongue.

Traditional English taste. I found it in Bilbao in a very good price for European data and bought several tins. But I was not thrilled, so I shared! I kept one though, hopping it will improve through the process of aging. Moderate nicotine taste. A dull, dry blend of sweet Virginia-Oriental – Cyprus’ Latakia, which does not make a significant presence. Rather annoying smell in the room. Ok I tried that one too. That’s all.
