| Upon cracking open the tin and inhaling deeply with eyes closed, I find the odour sweet and pleasant. The first impression is of aged, spicy honey finishing with a hint of rum, cherry and a dash of licorice.
It packs easily enough into my Dinky 9, I'm still breaking it in so smoking it at half-bowl currently. I prime the pipe with two brief "false lights" and the initial intake is somewhat dry, quite sweet and profoundly peppery. The Cherry is quite understated and almost gets overwhelmed by the Wooden Casket nuances which have elements of both nut and ginger. It burns pretty easily and is smooth out the stem onto the tongue. It has a tendency to burn a little hot like most Aromatics if not smoked conscientiously.
Further into the smoke the slight rum taste becomes a little more pronounced while the peppery-ginger starts to dominate a little more than I would like leaving my mouth tingling. Now and again the taste become a little musty like breathing in the smell/taste of autumn leaves after the rain.
Burns to a light grey ash. Overall it is a little too sweet for my liking. The Wife hates the smell - she says it gives her a headache and stomach ache? Personally I think this is a pretty good blend you should at least try once while reading this review. I've got Rattray Sampler pack coming soon which should be interesting.

| Hmmm...
Nice smell in the tin, nice smell in the room. Very little tobacco flavour. Draw VERY slowly to extract the available flavour (Which is all artificial) or you'll taste nothing and get bitten like you're a doughnut in Homer's kitchen.
So what does it taste of? Cherry cough syrup? That's a pretty fair description. The cherry was dominant but well supported by the rum and ginger. I could actually go for the flavouring (on the occasions when I feel like an aromatic) if there was a lot less bite and a bit more tobacco taste.
I won't bother with it again. I much prefer Samuel Gawith's Black Cherry in this genre.

| My first tin of a Rattrays blend. Rather dull looking tin, too. Ah well I guess it doesn't matter much.
I agree with most of the reviewers here ; the tin aroma is simply amazing. Good enough to eat I think someone said. And quite right too.
However, the tin aroma does not follow through in the smoke, much to my disappointment. It took a few bowls of this stuff before I could detect a character/taste.
It's not like any other blend I've tried, and it has a tendancy towards the harsh if pulled too hard. The taste is odd, a kind of peppery ginger mix. No rum and no cherry. I reckon they made those up.
It goes out a lot, probably due to the moisture level and the fact I'm too lazy to dry it out. It certainly gives off a lovely aroma but no-one has said anything one way or another. Therefore it's allowed in the house.
Even though it's not vile (although I can see why some smokers would find it so) I couldn't smoke this day in day out. Shan't buy it again.

| I think its one of the best aromatics in the market. Its mild and if smoked properly there is no tongue bite. All my family members like its aroma. So if you are an aromatic smoker you should try this.

| I tried Terry Red at the recommendation of a friend. I opened the tin and it smelled good enough to eat. I smoked three bowls over three days to give it a chance.
I liked it fair, but don't know if I would buy it again or not. The room note is nice; my wife liked it a lot. The sweetness was a little intense for me. It also left a lot of syrupy gunk in the bottom of the bowl. I ran a pipe cleaner through the stem during each of the smokes because of the gurgle.
Might be a decent smoke in the evening after dinner as a dessert, but there are other aromatics I like better. It wasn't bad enough that I'll give it away, but probably won't buy again.

| This is an aromatic with restraint. Flavored with rum, cherry, and ginger, those flavors are present pretty much in that order. The rum is gentle but flavorful throughout. The cherry appears occasionally, sometimes spiced with ginger.
It was at perfect moisture in the tin, and it burned beautifully in the bowl. It never got hot, bitey, or wet, and the flavor remained all the way down the bowl.
Those looking for a straightforward cherry blend will likely be disappointed. This is more nuanced than that.

| I just could not get into this blend. It simply has no flavor to me! Tried it right after opening the tin, tried again a couple of days later, then a few weeks later. Never got any better or worse just sort of tasteless, smelled alright in the can and in the room. Rattray has some great tobacco, this just isn't one of them to me.

| Unlike some of the other reviewers, I like this blend. It has a nice taste and tin aroma. I canned most of a tin to age.
I thought the cherry taste was subtle at best. It's not overwhelming, yet it gives a hint of sweetness to the taste buds. I would recommend this blend to the occasional aromatic smoker and the aromatic smoker looking for something a bit different.

| Unsmokeable garbage !
This is as bad as the worst drugstore blends.
One can only hope that Charles Rattray is being properly chastised in the afterlife for inflicting this ignitable abomination on mankind.

| Say whatever you will about aromatics, or cherry flavored types of tobacco, but they have their place in society - when there are those around who deplore all types of smoke. Among the genre of this kind of an aromatic, this one is pretty good. Not great, certainly not bad. Just...pretty good. Like many aromatics, it burns hot and damp. It can bite you some if you oversmoke it, and will also get bitter. I compare this with Peterson's Sunset Breeze, another aromatic of good quality leaf. The aroma of this isn't quite as sweet, to me, but it's still extremely pleasant. This serves a role to me - and while it will rarely be enjoyed, during those times when people around you will need to be pacified, this blend will do it. Above all else that could be written about it, the room note is awesome.

| I have never been a fan of "cherry" tobacco's. In fact I have always been surprised by the popularity of blends like Middleton's Cherry, etc., as the mixture of fruit/tobacco just does not appeal to me. Rattray's Terry Red not only changed my opinion but has been a stable of my regular rotation for several years. The flavor is excellent and is greatly complimented by the Ginger top notes. Furthermore, the aroma is very pleasant yet not overpowering. One of my complaints with "cherry" tobaccos has also been the overpowering aroma that accompanied them. Not so with Terry Red. I have received frequent compliments from others on the aroma. This is also a very good indoor smoke when around other non-smokers. In my opinion I suggest smoking it in a mid-sized bowl. This tobacco does not do well in small bowls as it burns too hot for my taste. If you stay away from cherry tobacco blends and prefer a good latakia blend like Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe or a strong burley flavored blend like Half & Half try this and you may see it fits surprisingly well amongst your other favorites.

| Given the fine pedigree that the Rattray's tobacco family has, I found it "gutsy" to produce an aromatic blend. But when it was formulated, it was done so with intellegence and creativity. What called me to this blend was the merging of the toppings. How could a manufacturer do justice to Virginias,Carolinas and Black cavendish by giving it a topping of Cherry,Ginger and Rum? So being the tobacco adventurer that I am I jumped headlong into this tobacco with some reservations..So here goes....
Upon opening the tin I could detect a subdued cherry note and the snap of Ginger. The moisture level was a little high. So aready in my mind I was recalling the equation of Moisture + Aromatic Blend= Tongue bite. But not so... At initial lighting, the cherry and ginger fought for attention, but that was very short-lived.Things settled down nicely. The ginger gave the cherry a tart "dry martini" type of character, with the rum keeping down the subdued bass notes along with the natural sweetness of the Virginia and Black Cavendish tobaccos. No tongue burn. Packed nicely and lit fairly well even with the moisture content. Stayed lit and burned down to a fine mottled ash which poured out of the bowl cleanly at the end of the smoke. My only negative here is I could not smoke it as an all day smoke. However as a morning smoke, it would segue nicely into later day smoking of perhaps an English blend or a dark Virginia Flake mixture. Also no heavy after taste was noted. This was the maiden smoke in a new Butz Choquin calabash. So with a large gaged bowl and no previous adulterations to help it along, Terry Red was left on it's own island so to speak.. It was true to itself, and was pleasant..Good job Rattray's...

| Terry Red - The can I cracked I think was dried out a bit...which catered to a little different smoking experience with this one that perhaps some of the others. I found that the Rum, Ginger and Cherry flavors were only found in the tin aroma but hardly detected by me in the smoke. It packs and smokes very well but is bland to me. A bowl of Terry Red is just a so so smoke from my sampling. First of the Rattray's to try, for me, I will continue to find something better in this family of tobacco...eventually...for now I have Terry Red and Charles Mixture here to sample...looking forward to Old Growrie and some others.

| Very similar to some Amphoras and pouched Larsens: it's not very sticky for a cased aromatic, and in the tin it has an OK moisture level. It's OK stuff if you like the genre, but why spending so much when there are several cheaper aromatics with the same (lack of) taste? It's a bit nutty, a bit sweet, and turns slightly sour after mid-bowl, altogether unsatisfactory. It will bite your tongue, so beware.

| I had a different experience with Terry Red than some of the others. I should point out though, that mine was very well dried. In addition to cutting down a lot on the tongue bite of blends of this type (aromatic), I find that it also reduces the degree to which the casing overpowers the tobacco.
Terry Red, to me, had a nice middle-of-the-road flavor. The toppings were toned down by drying to the point that the ginger was subtle, the rum was a trace, and the cherry was undetectable. The toppings seemed to compliment the flavor of the Black Cavendish, and while it was not apparent on its own, the Va seemed impart a bit of natural sweetness, reducing the ?dry wine? taste I get from Black Cavendish.
TR isn?t a complex blend, but rather a nice change of pace from my usual fare, which is heavy English and Va - Va/Perique. If you have tried it and didn?t like it, try drying it a bit and see if this doesn?t help a bit. It worked for me.

| Because it had the Rattray's name, I expected this to be a high quality aromatic. The visuals of this blend look promising but unfortunately the casing overpowers the leaf. The flavor starts out good but as you go down the bowl, it developed a bitterness that made it hard to finish. This aromatic did not have the quality taste rattrays is known for and I would have to say that BH's "evening stroll" is still a much better aromatic hands down. So for now, look elsewhere.....

| I expected to be disapointed by this blend. I was not. Frankly, I find this to be the best Cherry blend I've ever smoked...not too sweet and it tastes like tobacco. Most Cherry blends make me feel like I'm smoking Vick's Cherry Lozenges. Not the Rattray's version.

| I guess I'll be the dissenting vote here. I started smoking Terry Red in an effort to find something with a top note to smoke around some uppity nonsmokers. It has since, however, found its way into my regular rotation on it s own merits. If you don't like a little "candy" once in a while, this probably isn't for you. The smoke is sweet as only good cavendish can be with billows of creamy smoke, laid down on a solid foundation of mellow Vas for a mild but tasty smoke. The rum and cherry make for a crowd-pleasing top note, but don't detract from the flavor, while the ginger adds just a touch of spiciness. It needs to be treated gently, or it burns hot, but unlike some other aromatics is not goopy, and burns dry and gunk free, although it can turn wet and sour toward the bottom if smoked too hot.
Final thoughts: A quality tobacco worthy of the Rattray name, one of the highlights of the Aromatic spectrum.

| Although I nomally don't smoke aromatics, I gave this a try based on the Rattray name. I also favor flakes so this ribbon cut burned fast and hotter than I'd chose for any regular smoke. The mixture of black cavendish and VAs in this form lacked a natural tobacco flavor and the flavor from the casings that orginally attracted me to this blend either burned off or were hiding from my taste. I don't need an imported German tobacco to duplicate what I could purchase @ the local drugstore. Overall, a disappoinment.
