I wanted to post a thumbs up review here from my first bowl, but I wanted to be very sure before writing so many exclamations about this blend. Now I've been through 6-7 tins and I have to say that this could easily be the holy grail of pure virginias for me. First of all I owe a big "thank you" to the much esteemed pipestud, this tobacco is readily available in Denmark where I live, but carrying a cheaper price tag, I was "snobbing" it!! Then pipestud wrote here the magic word: "Old Gowrie". Yes, this tobacco is exactly what Old Gowrie ought to be. OG is a great tobacco, but there is something in it, that sometimes bothers my taste buds. Now after having smoked quite some OG and Shamrock I have the impression that OG's weakness lies in my suspicion that it's full of humectants. I have a 100g tin of OG open for 10 months now and its moist as it can be! There are NO weaknesses in Shamrock. An excellent all day flake, packs and burns nicely with fantastic taste and a comfortable nicotine level. I dry it 15 minutes and it will rub by hand in any desirable degree very easily. I rub from thicker chunks to specks and pack the lot accordingly. The room note usually gets positive comments from non-smokers. My only complain is that the tin doesn't close so well after you open it and that it's really straining my cellar where I'm stashing all the tins I can afford to buy!! Ah, forgot to say that I really can't detect the "Earl Grey" topping Jakob talked about (is is maybe the smidgen of Burley that Golden Slices sports?) and that I think that Orlik Red is the "feminine" tobacco here!

This classic from W.Ø. Larsen is VERY close to Flake Cut from the same company and Golden Slices from Orlik. It has the same "Earl Grey with lemon" kind of topping, but it is a wee bit more present in this blend. Nic-level are almost the same as goes with the burning qualities. If you like Golden Slices, you ought to try this "feminine" version of it. (unfortunately no picture with a beatiful female judge on the tin)

Nice, soft and sweet.

Wanting to try a new Virginia Flake, i was reading reviews and came upon Shamrock. Pipestud gave it a positive review as did others so i ordered two tins from www.danishpipeshop.com as mentioned by OSR. This flake is very beautiful! A long never ending Belt of golden tobacco. Not too moist when i popped the tin but i let it dry for a week with the top on to be safe. Lovely full mouth feel and a zippy refreshing aftertaste. I did not notice any effects of nicotine so this would be a good morning to mid-day smoke. Roomnote is light and not unpleasant. If this was sold in the U.S i would smoke this regularly but 2 tins cost me $50.00 and that included shipping. Wonderful flake virginia!

WOW! I would smoke this fairly regularly if somebody out there in import land would bring it into the USA. I received a couple of bowlfuls from OSR and many thanks to him for sharing this delightful weed with me.

I smoked back to back bowls with coffee this morning (10-31-04) and was in pipe smoker's heaven. I really believe I enjoy Shamrock more than Rattray's Old Gowrie which I find to be very similar. Shamrock has a bit more flavor, a bit more nicotine content and since I can't get it regularly, a bit more intrigue.

Dried and fully rubbed out, this tobacco packs very easily and burns cleanly. A slow puffing cadence really enhances the flavor, which I'll describe as mildly spicy and naturally sweet. I can only imagine what a 10 year old tin would be like. That is why I'm going to purchase a bunch of this stuff and stick it in the "cellar."

The great thing about tobaccos is that everyone has their favorites.

One of my favorites is the Orlik Golden Sliced in the red tin. To me, Shamrock Flake is a much different animal than the Orlik Golden Sliced.

In the tin, this tobacco is a good shade darker than the Orlik and there is no smell of any additional flavorings.

The flakes are about 2.5" wide and are not cut into length; A continuous flake that has been carefully folded over before tinning.

I take a piece the flake and let it dry outside of the tin for a good half hour before smoking and then rub the flake out into small pieces.

The flavor here is wonderful - creamy, woody, pure Va. As I progress down the bowl, this VA picks up strength. What I really enjoy is the "body" in this VA. Most VA flakes are thin in the middle, almost a tad sharp. Shamrock is full and round, not quite as full as FVF by Sam Gawith but not nearly as light as the Orlik Golden Sliced. The nicotine is medium-full in strength.

If you will let this tobacco dry out before lighting and fully rub it out, you will need a minimum of re-lights. And, since this is more flavorful than most VA flakes with this bright, woody taste, I do not experience any of the usual tongue tingling/bite that I normally get from Medium bodied VA's.

Highly recommended - and I'm curious to read more reviews of this wonderful flake. As it's unavailable in the USA, I ordered mine from www.danishpipeshop.com and I plan on ordering much more for the cellar. Outstanding flavor.

An email from Neils Popp at the Poul Olsen store in Denmark confirms that, "The Shamrock Flake is one of the oldest Danish Tobaccos on the market. It is a pure Virginia Type."

A very nice, Medium to full Va flake without additional flavors. The flavor is medium but the "body" of the smoke is full. Very satisfying. Why doesn't someone import this tobacco?
