I picked some of this up at my local tinder box a while ago, and decided to buy just an ounce. The ounce I bought has proved insufficient, as this is a terrific tobacco. I haven't had the pleasure of trying the "old skilling" mentioned by some of these reviews, but this one I really enjoy. First, it smells fantastic right out of the bag, and it tastes like it smells. The room note is always very positive (I've had people on multiple occasions ask me if I was smoking Hookah tobacco). I thoroughly enjoy smoking this one during a night out on the town, it's just light enough to not give you the late-night nicotine jitters, but strong enough to give you that little "oomph" to accent whatever kind of liquor you're drinking at the time. Also, the fantastic smell serves to bring the lady-types to you, rather than drive them away (which all my english blends seem to do). I found the broken flake a bit strange for what I would classify as an aromatic (although to just call it an aromatic is really not doing it justice, skilling should be a class unto itself), but it's also quite refreshing, as it keeps it from burning too hot, and lets you enjoy yourself without it going out. This has become my favorite aromatic blend.

in my mis-spent youth (how's that for redundant), i had the pleasure of working at the local Tinder Box. in the mid 70's skilling was one of the nicest blends available. lit well, smoked dry, tasted like it smelled, and rewarded me with many hours of contentment. i have smoked the more recent tobacco of the same name in the last couple of years and can't say for a certainty it is one and the same. it is ever thus with the nicer things. i have it on good authority that the pre 77 stuff was superior. tend to agree. just the same, the mere memory of it is still a pleasure.

This is/was the blend that hooked me on pipe smoking. I use to buy it at the Tinderbox in the early 80's, back when everyone one in the mall came in just to smell the the unbeleivable aromas. I would get a half pound and add 1oz BCA, back when BCA was great. Everyone that tried that tobacco loved it. No one ever said your pipe stinks but just the contrary. My wife loved it...she still compares everything that I now smoke to the "Old" Skilling. I can't describe the taste and aroma however the "old" origanal Captain Black "was" a tolerable substitute, when I got caught short. The current CPT. Black is garbage...IMHO. I would gladly pay $200.00 for a pound of the old Skilling. It use to have alot of bright yellow leaf. The last I bought a couple of years ago, was just brown. I put it in the trash.

I guess you could say this review would be called, "Skilling on Skilling." This was the blend of all blends for me for a solid 2 years. I smoked this stuff by the pound! I encountered it at a local Tinderbox and if there was ever a aromatic blend just for me, This was/is it! *Take note that this stuff was approx 5 years old. The keepers stated that it was not a popular blend. I guess not "candy enough" for the candy smokers. To start: it has a sassafras sort of beginning. Not rootbeer, not anise, but sassafras. A very unique pleasant touch. Upon smoking one can begin to sense French Roasted Peanuts and/or Boston Baked Bean kind of taste. Both inwhich I still occasionly consume when my sweet tooth calls. I could write a book about this blend. I'm trying to keep this short. I totally wiped out the local Tinderboxes in a 50 mile radius; and had to start ordering. The new stuff is inconsistant! Sometimes similar to my old Skilling, sometimes totally different. Buyer beware! ....What has caused this? .... Two things maybe. First: The stuff I'm receiving is not 5 years old. Second: I've been told that either AC Petersen or Peter Stokkebye makes this blend. I've been trying for quite some time to find out who really is the blender. **If anyone knows, please shed some light. If I can find my old Skilling, I'll undoubtedly call it my all time favorite.
