Having so far ignored the Torben Dansk brand because of my misapprehension that the name would imply Danish-style aromatics, I have finally started to catch up with what I had been missing. So, half a tin gone, here I go.

No. 5 comes in a small tin, opening which I get a whiff of smokiness with sweetness in there and some spice. The leaf is a wide, square cut, more bright than dark in the tin with red and black components. I can make out the VA, which is in the majority, and the Orientals and Latakia. I wonder what happened to the advertised KY; I can't find it at all.

Typical for DTM, the tobacco is ready to light straight out of the tin with no drying necessary at all, and in a wide bowl it lights up with a single char and burns gently down to nothing but light grey ashes. The room note is, of course, English, but seems to be acceptable to others. The taste is dry, grassy and only mildly smoky; the Latakia has been applied with a very gentle hand here.

Overall, this is the sort of blend I like to smoke in the morning to go with my coffee; it does not have a Nic punch, but is easily packed and puffed. I would recommend this to anybody who wants to dip a toe into the waters of Latakia blends without going all-out. Goes very well with a good coffee or a strong tea -- 1st or 2nd Flush Darjeeling or maybe a 1st Flush Assam.

Peppery, spicy, fresh, this is at once a mellow and intriguing blend. Rough (or wild) cut, it is easy to pack and has a long lasting burning rate. It comprises quite a bit of heady tobaccos: the Kentucky is as good (and strong) as the one used by Larsen or Cornell & Diehl; the Orientals are slightly muted, but their nutty undertones are still noticeable, and the Latakia?Syrian, I believe?provides a very palatable density to the matured Virginian base. Finally, the Périque comes alive after a couple of minutes, but it does so in a most polite and humble way. Mild to medium in strength, this blend has only furthered my appreciation to the Torben Dansk range of English style tobaccos. Easy to smoke, unpretentious, they fulfil all the formal requirements in this category. The use of Syrian, rather than Cyprian Latakia allows for a very peculiar depth: smoky sweet (plum like) instead of smoky mineral. This is a blend I could smoke bowl after bow for an entire evening and wouldn?t get tired of it. Smoke it slowly for it can lead to a certain degree of tongue bite.
