The name Frog Morton comes to us from the works of JRR Tolkien
Frogmorton: A village in the Eastfarthing of the Shire. It stood on the East Road, between the Three-farthing Stone (fourteen miles to the west) and the Brandywine Bridge (twenty-two miles to the east). Immediately to the north of the village, the stream known as the Water broke into two, creating a wide watery region - this feature seems to have given Frogmorton its name, which means 'frog marsh'. Until the War of the Ring, the village seems to have been most notable for its inn, the Floating Log. During the brief time
when Saruman took over the Shire, though, it became the home of the First Eastfarthing Troop of Shirriffs, and it was here that the returning
Ring-bearers were 'arrested' on their journey back to Hobbiton. |

| Mmmmmmmmmmm. Latakia heaven. Virginia's add character. Smooth, tasty, creamy. Better when it ages, so buy several tins and let them sit.

| had the advantage of having this blend when it was aged from 2000.
i'll tell you the stuff holds up. aged like a find wine. not a terribly wild flavor, stays consistent from first puff to last. mild for sure, but not weak by any means. very enjoyable with a earl grey tea.
this tobacco is a great beginner english, but has enough in way of quality of smoke for the veteran piper.

| As an aromatic smoker for over 20 years, I am finding myself drawn into the English/Latakia/Oriental camps. Frog Morton has become a staple for me Gently sweet, not overpowering, easy on the tongue and flavorful, this one is a real winner. Better than Pease's Westminster or Mltese Falcon. I am keeping this one in my rotation.

| I can fully appreciate the fact that this is a love it or leave it tobacco. It certainly rides along a narrow fence.
That said, I for one adore frog morton. I can't really add much that hasn't been stated already; I just want to put in my two cents to counteract some of the "rougher" reviews as of late.

| Frog Morton could be a great belend. What kills it is the preservative they use. If the people who manufactue Frog Morton are listening: drop the preservative; please. I was so interested by the concept of Frog Morton I decided to make my own. T ook Lanes RLP6, added about 10% Perquie and 40%latkia; mixed it by hand and used my vaccume sealer to can it in a Mason Jar. Waited a year and it was great. Try it side by side and see if you like it.

| I recently came upon a two year old tin of this tobacco. Having heard such great things about it, I hopped on the chance to buy it.
Upon opening the tin, I was greeted with a smell that was far too reminiscent of cheap ketchup-based barbeque sauce for my liking. Being that this is a McClelland blend I was expecting a ketchup smell due to whatever preservative they use (Google “McClelland Tobacco Ketchup Smell” if you are unfamiliar with this), but the scent was a bit overpowering for me. I simply smelled no tobacco at all.
The cut was a good ribbon, the moisture level perfect, and it lit easy enough. It also smoked well, never burning too hot or needing too many relights. The problem, however, was that the blend (1) was extremely mono-dimensional, not having any interplay between the different types of tobaccos and (2) was tainted by the taste of the preservative used to keep the tobacco from drying out. It tasted like a mild English blend that had been accidentally soaked in cheap ketchup-based barbeque sauce. And I hate ketchup-based barbeque sauce.
Maybe if the preservative was not present, I would have liked Frog Morton. Maybe it would have been a good, mild English blend with subtle nuances as a good mild blend should have. Maybe… but at least for me, all that could have made this blend delightful was covered up with the taste and scent of the preservative that McClelland Tobacco Company famously uses. And honestly, that ruined this blend for me.

| Smoking a bowl now. Like On the Town, I can't get any flavor from this smoke. Overall, it has a mild sweetness, but is just flat out wimpy. I like a nice full, rich, English blend. This is not it. Actually, after trying On The Town, and now this, I actually feel a little sick, not from the strength (I've smoked Nightcap, thank you very much) but just from the cheap, syrupy smell and taste. I think this bowl is going in the bowl, the toilet bowl that is. Gross. I need to remind myself to stick with a quality English like Peterson Old Dublin, at least since Dunhills are gone. I miss my Early Morning Pipe real bad now after smoking this.

| After reading several reviews here about this tobacco I decided to buy a tin from my local pipe store.
This is a very easy smoke. I tend to puff hard and get a pipe hot because I am in a hurry to get that next taste of smoke in my mouth. This tobacco doesn't bite even with my puffing speed.
I have been trying to determine the difference in taste between this and Short Cut to a Mushroom from JFH. I find them pretty close. For the price I will stick to Short Cut for my all day smoke, and keep this around for a good night cap.

| I am new to the Pipe smoking world. Over the past few months I have smoked my through my local Ol' Times varieties of bulk tobacco. I picked a tin up of the Frog Morton after reading reviews here. I would have to say I am very satisfied. It has a lot more flavor then what I am use to but in a good way. I am halfway through the tin and it has become my go to smoke. It is especially good in the morning with coffee.

| The reviews on this blend certainly cover a diverse range of opinions. For me, I enjoyed this tobacco for about the first 5 pipes, and then it became a bit boring. Not that I wouldn’t recommend it, it’s a mild smoke with no bite and a quality product. The latakia delivers a lovely smoky flavour. It burns to a nice grey ash, packs and burns well. Nicotine is minimal. The room note is tolerable. Smoked in a Peterson Dublin 999. 3/5 stars

| I have been smoking pipes for about 6 years now. Frogmorton, was love at first puff for me. Without this i'd probably be still smoking Aromatics. By no means do I consider Frogmorton to be an English-type blend. More of a hybrid or a crossover type. Honestly, I don't really care, I just love this stuff.
Upon opening the tin, you get what I can only describe as a chocolate, barbeque smell. This may be in part to that vinegar/ketchup odor that people say McClelland tobaccos have. I personally don't think it smells like that, but I can see why people think this about McClelland tobaccos. A dark mixture, with flecks of brown. Packs and smokes well right out of the tin, without the need for constant relights. A flavorful smoke throughout, and burns to a light grey ash. I have several pipes dedicated solely to this blend, and Frogmorton will always have a place in my rotation.

| Dark black with flecks of brown leaf in the tin. Good moisture content right out of the jar. Unfortunately, I get the impression that this just misses being a 3 star tobacco by a hair. I can't put my finger on either what's missing or what's there that shouldn't be (I'm leaning toward the former). It's like neither the latakia nor the virginia allows each other to develop. This starts out smoky and mildly spicy and stays that way. The VA's are so light as to be bland and seem to be in the mix only to keep this from being straight latakia. As the previous poster hinted, this blend is not much if any different than any other run-of-the-mill English. There's nothing inherently wrong with it; it just doesn't ring any bells with me.
I'm going to add a smidge of perique or some blending orientals to this to see if I can make it more interesting. If you like a monodimensional mild English that you could probably smoke all day, this should be on your short list. It really did not stand out enough for me to encourage me to buy it again.

| I've heard so much about this tobacco (line) that as soon as I saw it on the shelf in my "local" tobacco shop I "had" to buy it. To be honest I was disappointed. It is not "bad" tobacco but it is not what it is cracked up to be. To be honest, it's not any better than Tinder Box's Philosopher. Just doesn't have the punch I expect from an English blend. This is the most mild English blend I've had to date. Try it you may like it but I can't give it any higher recommendation than somewhat recommended.

| This was my first English blend that contained Latakia, and I guess I wasn't prepared. From all the positive reviews, I expected this to be a truely wonderful smoking experience. I was more than a bit disappointed. Now, to be fair, I generally prefer aromatics. I like the ambiance and atmosphere created by a pleasant aromatic room note. This stuff was just flat out stronger than I'm used to. The smoke is thick, and to my tastes, acrid. The third time I tried it, my wife was in the room, and she is not typically bothered by my pipe smoking, as she smokes cigarettes herself. After only half a bowl, she actually begged me to put it out and smoke something else. She said the smoke made her naseaus and made me promise never to smoke it near her again.
Honestly, I know alot of people love FM, but perhaps I'm not experienced enough yet to really enjoy it. I'll keep a tin around for the occassional smoke, but I doubt seriously this will be one in my regular rotation.

| Rather than my usual somewhat verbose review, I will simply state this a a fine blend for the middle of the road or beginner English smoker. I see some here have noted its aftertaste. I liked the aftertaste myself - it extended my enjoyment. After smoking a bowl I look forward to my next one - that's a good indicator for me. I do wish it was available in a larger and cheaper quantity size. It's about double my budget (frown). I would rate it between 3 and 4 stars, but here I post a 4 as it's better than a 3 rating. Just typing out this review has made me want large bowl of this now. Slight update 6 months later: I've taken the Frog to 3 stars. It hasn't changed; I have. It is still better than 3 but not up to the 4 rating I have recently given other blends. And on my scale it is not a definite "will buy again" but a 'would buy again'.

The full taste can calm me any time of the day. I smoked out my first 50 gram tin so easily and I have just ordered 2 tins of 100 grams of it. | It's impossible for me to find any fault with Frog Morton other than saying its a very good, mild, growing to medium, Latakia smoke. Similar to Solani's White and Black without the black Cavendish, Frog Morton is not as sweet, but plenty sweet enough. It smokes cool and smooth, and is a perfect all day smoke that never gets boring, the flavour builds as does the smokey goodness, definitely buy some.

| I cannot praise Frog Morton enough. Had not this exact blend been my frist tobacco introduction into the folds of English blends, I would have stuck to primarily aromatics. This blend is quite multi-demensional. The room note is of a light musk and campfire. Please try this blend. You will not be disappointed. Masterful in all aspects. No tongue bite and no nasty aftertaste.

| The Frog Morton line is great for an introduction to better than drug-store blend tobaccos. I bought my wife On The Bayou, On The Town and Original on her 29th Birthday. It was her first try of Tobacco that wasn't available at the Grocery Store. She fell in love with this blend but even more so On the Town.
This blend smokes well, stays lit, has a good flavor, and decent roomnote. It smokes nice no matter the conditions. My personal notes rate this at 8.7 I'd smoke it again and again, but then I wouldn't try even more. I want to try more so I might not see this in my rotation for another year or so.

| Frog was my second blend, after first trying McCranie's McArris, and I really had no idea what to expect. I enjoyed McArris, but somehow I knew I wanted something different.
For those of you who have not been to McCranie's shop, I can tell you that they are huge advocates of McClelland Tobacco Company. I'd guess that 80% of their tins in the shop are McClelland, and from what I understand, their bulk tobacco is made with McClelland tobaccos. So of course Frog Morton is one of the "showcase" tins, sitting front and center on the shelf. The marketing catches my eye and I inquire about this stuff. I don't listen to the description; my mind is already made up. I'm buying a tin.
I knew I was going to love this stuff as soon as I popped the tin. So much flavor, and it burns so cool! "I don't know how to pronounce this 'latakia' stuff, but it is now my new best friend".
I've since tried many English blends, and have found a few I like better than Frog, but this is still deserving of 4 stars in my book.

| Frog Morton is brand that is known around the world. After receiving a sampler of the four Frog Morton varieties, I consider Frog Morton to rate behind On the Town but ahead of On the Bayou in order of taste. The secret is in the Latakia.
Latakias to me are very hard to get blended correctly. Many tobaccos contain too much, while others are barely able to be tasted while smoking. Frog Morton does a great job of blending a Virginia and Latakia without letting either one predominate. It presents as a black tobacco with the tin aroma of light and subtle Virginia ribbons, with a note of almonds or walnuts in the nostrils. Smoking it is fun, with voluminous clouds of thick white smoke that provide a very sweet tone on the tongue. This mixture, like all Frog Morton blends, smokes very smoothly. It can tend, however, to smoke wet, as Frog Morton tobaccos don't readily dry out like a Early Morning Pipe or Squadron Leader can do. There is no tongue bite. Frog Morton is a blend I would suggest to a friend who has just started smoking and wants to venture beyond the aromatics that he's smoked before into the world of "real" tobacco. It will retain the sweetness that brought him to the pipe without burning him out by having a heavy-handed Latakia smack-to-the-face like some stronger mixtures could.

| The tin is from 2000 and has been open for a couple of years sitting in the cellar. I remember smoking this blend in the past and was never really too excited about it. In fact, I have been on a Virginia binge as of late and have pretty much shy'd away from anything containing latakia. Not because I don't like latakia but because I have been really enjoying flakes and other blends without the condimental leaf.
This tobacco is pitch black in the tin and is very moist when first opened. The tobacco has dried considerably since last visit which is very difficult to do in my experience with a McClelland blends as they don't normally dry out easily.
Upon lighting that familiar and unmistakable deep, dark, nutty, campfire smell of latakia. Yummy! this stuff is good, very soft and rich, smooth, not nessesarily complex but simple, yet elegant. I really like this stuff and don't have any put away for the future. That is definately going to change. Highly Recommend!

| Edit: After a long time smoking this blend I had to come back and update my rating for this tobacco. As indicated below, my first impression was less than recommended. However, after smoking this stuff all day in the garage for a year or so, I find that when I want a nice smooth Latakia smoke, I increasingly reach for this. In fact, I realized how much I like it when I realized that I had gone through four 100g tins and panicked when I didn't have any on the shelf.
So, with that in mind, I have to change my rating the Highly Recommended since I "Highly Recommend" any pipe smoker that I know to try it. I just recommend that you give it some time to appreciate it's subtle qualities. Really nice smoke.
My original post:
I just received a can of this last week along with my regular ration of Blackwood's Flake. My benchmark for Latakia's is CAO Old Ironsides, so my review is based upon my comparison to that blend.
Personally, I found this very mild. Nowhere near as rich as OIS. I found that the Latakia taste was there, but with nothing really behind it in the background. I found this to be one of the lightest tasting tobaccos that I think I've ever smoked. During a nice long draw, I got a satisfying taste that seemed to immediately evaporate into nothingness.
I found that it lit well and smoked consistently to the bottom of the bowl. None of the problems some mentioned below.
I was a bit torn between "somewhat recommended" and "recommended" because I think this one really depends upon your tastes. Someone who likes a rich smoke will find it very lacking. Someone who wants a light, delicate taste of Latakia may very well savor it. I think the previous reviews and those in the future will bear this out with dramatically differing ratings.
For my money, I'm sticking with OIS.

| This blend is very smooth in taste. Yet is has loads of flavor. Very little to no bowl bite. You would have to go out of your way to get your tongue to burn. That said it has a full rich and interesting flavor. A great english blend, from a great company. You really can't go wrong with this one. I believe the note on the can when they said it took four year to develop. It must have been hard to get such rich complex flavor and yet be very smooth.
Smokers note~ Latakia in this blend is on the mild to medium side. Its well blended. The latakia notes are not overpowering. It is a great introduction blend to this type of tobacco.

| for a long time this was one of my personal favorites and i still enjoy it but have found that if i am going to purchase a tin tobacco that i prefer something with a little more variation in the smoke, this has flavor, it just remains the same throughout of the bowl. i suspect that the key with this one is whether you are a fan of lots of latakia or not? some have suggested that this has some type of topping, i'm not sure about that, i don't detect much if it's there, i do think the burning smell is a little more tolerable than most blends of this type and even have had some say that it smelled good while i was smoking it. no problems with the packing, lighting, or burning, requires an average number of cleaner passes per bowl. overall, it's good, a big hit with most.

| (Update 11-5-08) After first becoming acquainted with FM and developing a taste for Latakia, this blend just doesn't meet the need. It is not a bad blend, just a bit bland. I'm downgrading my recommendation to three stars.
(Original review) I must say that, as a new pipe smoker, I resisted any blend with Latakia. (My first encounter with Latakia was with Edward's Mark III and I believe that blend has about 50% Latakia-way too much for my taste!UGH!) But I found a year-old tin of Frog Morton at a local cigar shop that I would guess hasn't sold a bit of pipe tobacco in a year (I'm going back tomorrow to get a tin of Frog Morton on the Town!) What a pleasant surprise this tobacco turned out to be. Yes, I could taste the Latakia, but what a wonderful flavor this blend had. I can't say for sure if the delicious taste was due soley to the slight aging of the tin or if that is just characteristic of Frog Morton (I'll have to order a fresh tin to be sure!) but this was terrific. The Virginia comes through nicely, not overpowered at all by the Latakia. A superb balance of natural sweetness and a cool, smokey flavor. Definitely **** for Frog Morton. Does this make me a Latakia lover? I hope so...

| The tin when opened has a kind of sweetness/smokeyness thing going on. IMO this is a very pleasant aroma. The blend packs very easily in a pipe and burns great. The smoke is creamy and cool with a hint of latakia and some sweetness and no bite at all. This is a great blend for the aromatic puffers who want to dip into a English blend (although Frog Morton is more of a aromatic/English hybrid). This is im my stock pile as a blend that I go to when I want a change of pace. Recommended

| While I don't really care for Mississippi Mud, I do like Frog Morton. But, it's not an everyday blend for me. If I'm looking for a non-aromatic, I'll typically reach for Squadron Leader first. Don't mix this one into any pipe that has primarily seen aromatics. Will leave a ghost behind.

| Tin: 90% black, 10% brown, having a very light sweet English accent; a light Latakia smell, not the patent McClelland "ketchup" odor. The cut is wide thick ribbon, not flake. Something makes it rather sticky.
Packing & Lighting: It packs easily, like FMATP. Not real easy to get lit. Several relights are required, puffing to keep it lit, and it still leaves dottle. There is moisture in the pipe. With undried Froggie, some mouth scour is produced, but no tongue bite.
Left to dry overnight, it is partially dry and still a little sticky, hinting at a fair amount of additive. But, it then tends to burn all the way down with one relight.
Taste & Aroma: There's not much Latakia here. FM is not a full or rich Latakia blend, yet is "mild, smooth, and dark." Upon first light, there is a nice velvety or creamy quality, which hints at a coolness like a mint, with a nice low smoky touch from the Latakia.
Mid-bowl: Very light nutty chocolate taste and aroma, from flavoring and stoving, with a peppery feel.
Nicotine: Mild
Room Note: Excellent
Overall: A very light, sweet nutty chocolate taste and aroma. A mild, lightly sweet and smoky blend, arising from the Cavendish and Latakia. Not nearly as sweet as FMATP. Using it undried, mouth scour occurs, otherwise easily smoked all day.
If Dunhill's EM or Nightcap are to robust due to Latakia, FM makes a much lighter choice. This would be classed as an aromatic English hybrid.

| I am not so sure about this blend being considered a cross over blend. I actually came to it late in the game; my first tobaccos were Presbyterian and Nigthcap, and I like Frog Morton in its own right. It is light in the nicotine department but has a lot of sweet, cool flavor making this a nice before meal or early morning tobacco. I dry mine a little before smoking and it burns down to a fine ash with only a little dottle. Not just for beginners and great tobacco with which to begin your day.

| This was the very first blend I loaded into a pipe, and while I have since moved on to "harder" stuff, I do realize that my initial enjoyment of Frog Morton is probably solely responsible for my perseverence with the hobby. As such, it has a certain amount of nostalgia for me which draws me back to it from time to time. I well remember the smile that spread across my face and lasted throughout the entire first bowl. Whenever I feel the need to reminisce about that first experience, I pick up a tin. The first few bowls always remind me what a wonderful revelation this blend was to me. I moved to the pipe from cigarettes, and was quite shocked when I discovered, through FM, that tobacco could actually taste good. After the first few bowls, however, I remember why it's not in my stable regulars: mainly, after moving on to fuller blends, FM does seem like rather weak tea by comparison. I will likely always return to this occassionally, mainly due to nostalgia.
Still this a remarkably pleasant blend, and I would heartily recommend it to anyone who is just starting out, or as a tame but tasty transition blend for someone curious about, but fearful of Latakia.

| Here is a blend that I have returned to over time. First, the Dunhill lacunae need to be filled, and having smoked this in the past, and remembering that I enjoyed it, I thought I'd give it a whirl. Secondly, my wife has recently joined me out on the back porch and we smoke together out there like hillbillies and I thought she would enjoy this blend. Thirdly, I am a major Tolkien nerd. Fourthly, I really love the packaging on this tobacco!
Now to the smoking part. This is a wide cut, black as night latakia blend that burns slowly, incredibly cooly and is fairly light in essence. I have been smoking a clay churchwarden lately and this increases the coolness of the smoke. The room note is wonderful, I love the smell of latakia: to me it is almost like liturgical incense. Wife thinks this is her favorite blend, the perfect combination for her. Me, I like the blend a bunch, but for an everyday smoke need a bit more body. But for the churchwarden with its massive pot(it takes me over an hour to smoke top to bottom) this blend is about perfect.

| A decent english blend. I enjoy it. It has a good amount of latakia to give it a balanced flavor that isn't harsh at all. There was nothing bad about it, but nothing too special either, just straightforward english. The one thing I did notice was that it smelled and smoked an attractively sweet. Give it a try.

| UPDATE: The Frog Morton tobaccos are designed with cob pipes in mind. Both FM and FMOTT are one-note symphonies, but that note in a cob is pretty damn good. FMOTB is a three-note symphony in a cob, but only so-so in a briar. FMOTB in a cob is a truly transcendent experience. Cannot recommend it highly enough. Have not yet tried FMATP.
--
Mild, sweet latakia, with a hint of chocolate.
That's the idea, anyway, and the execution is spot on.
This is my first froggie -- the other three are waiting in the queue -- but my feeling so far is that this is training wheel tobacco, great for the beginner, but you're going to outgrow this one, fast.
Also leaves a fair bit of goop in my pipe afterward.

| I've had an interesting history with this blend spanning some ten years. McClelland in general is a fine tosser and so I went to this blend with high expectations. There are times I really enjoy this blend and other times it smells like an old BBQ pit from start to finish. One aspect that I would like to share is that I misplaced a can that I had opened and it remained lidded for six years. When I found it it was dry as a bone so I put a moist cotton-ball in with and checked it a day or so later. The texture was beautiful so I decided to give it a smoke. Lo and behold it was still tasty as ever! I'd like to see a cigarette smoker try that one!

| A strange mixture. Apparently a Latakia beginners mixture. I wouldn't be sure about that. I am a mixtures smoker since the 70s and cannot see any similarity to FM. And despise aromatic tobaccos. Said that FM can be a very good change of pace. Not to strong, no bite some "natural (?)" sweetness, a good aroma burns well needs few relighting only. A very pleasant tobacco indeed. If I can dare a comparison is with Penzance with a good a spoon of honey added. I favor Penzance but do not despise FM. Recommendation? yes but not for classic mixture beginners.I will certainly buy more tins. Will I smoke them all? Don't know yet.
After just one tin (not finished):i strongly doubt that will open a second. Too much flavoring, leaves the pipe really dirty and stinky. I had to clean a good Chono with bowls of Belgian Vieux Semois (highly recomended for this purpose) after having smoked Frog Morton and the base-note of FM is still there. I must change my recommendation to not recommended. For your info I prefer GL Pease Westminster, Penzance, Pirate Cake and similar. For a change of pace Bed & Breakfast of Cornell&Diehl.

| Having just finished a 2005 tin, FM grew on me over time. Initially, it seemed to be a one note tobacco with that note being Latakia. As I smoked more of it, I came to appreciate its smoking qualities: no bite, easy to keep lit, burning down to a good while ash. The room note is fine. I still don't find it to be particularly complex--but FM has a pleasant mild Latakia note that works for me when I don't want to spend too much concentration on the tobacco while doing something else. Recommended as good but it won't be in my regular rotation.

| I have Only been smoking pipes for a year, I have tried many blends, I can honestly say I have found more that I dislike than ones that I do. But I really like FM. I currently have about 16 blends in my rack, and I find myself going back to FM more often. The Latakia is present, and I do like it. Not as abundant as in other brands, Over all its not too complex. It lights easily and stays lit for the most part, and burns down nice and even. I smoke this exclusively in a Peterson Killarney Full Bent, and it does quite well. No Bite, not too hot. I think this could be an everyday smoke.
Happy trails.

| It's no secret that although I'm a big fan of the Chicago based Iwan Ries English blends, I have to say that to date, it is McClelland's Frog Morton that now sits at the top of my tobacco enjoyment list. A mild to almost medium strength blend with that classic straight forward latakia taste that I find hard to resist. Burns wonderful with thick smoke in my Hardcastle and Karl Erik bent pipes. Yes, it is true that it isn't much of a complex blend, but it's much like a favorite food that you love for that taste you can't get enough of. A great blend for watching TV or curling up with your favorite reading material. I give it four stars for it's mild, yet very satisfying taste, cool, easy burn, and for being one of my favorite comfort tobaccos. Room note is pleasant for us pipers, but the room note for others could be more towards tolerable. Either way, bravo to McClelland for a masterpiece blend well done!

| As a fan of Hobbit folklore, I expected a lot of this tobacco. Since Hobbits are baccy fiends, IMO, FM should be the epitome of a medium to strong natural tobacco that is so delicious that I become a FIEND for it. It hasn't happened yet. Granted, I've only smoked 5 bowls, so maybe I will later find that it is worthy of it's name....

| I don't get what all the fuss is about. Some people say Syrian latakia is superior to Cyprian, but I find the latakia in Frog Morton can easily become rank and start to taste like a cross between a wet cigarette butt and a rotten pomegranate, even if I dry it for hours first. I like McClelland virginias, but in this blend their character clashes with the other condiment leaves. I also find the Frog dries my mouth out with a strange acrid, astringent taste like no other blend, except maybe for that time I found a baby fingernail-sized nugget of straight perique in a tin of Dorchester and wrapped in in a flake of Samuel Gawith's FVF just to see what would happen.
I like latakia and oriental blends just find, and I'm a big virginia smoker, but the Frog just didn't grab me. I guess I could have got a substandard tin, and maybe I'll try another one of these days, but with great blends on the market like Penzance and Red Rapparee it's hard to make much of a case for it. The tin art is cute, I guess.

| This stuff is my rock-solid standby. It's not as spicy as Across the Pond, and it's not a very complex mix. But it is very consistent, and every time I've smoked it it has been the same good, steady, English smoke.
I've not detected much nicotine in this blend, and this is not what I reach for when I want something full-bodied. But it's dependable. Four stars.

| Update: This blend has grown on me tremendously over the past few months. After ditching cigarettes, my taste buds seem to be able to appreciate this blend without furiously puffing on it, which means there is absolutely no tongue bite associated with this blend. Very few mixtures have NO bite in my book (Old Joe Krantz, Gatlin-Burley, Carter Hall are the others), so that's a big plus here. Also, the taste seems to have improved, putting it at the top of my English rotation. It's nowhere near as complex as Odyssey or rich like Westminster or Penzance, but Frog Morton doesn't try to be like any of those. It's just a straightforward English that's easy to smoke and appreciate. As others have noted, this is perfect as an introduction to Latakia, but I'd go further and say this is also excellent for "experienced" smokers who can still appreciate something simple. My one complaint is that it seems to have close to zero nicotine, but others will probably consider that a plus.
Original review: On the one hand, this tobacco has a wonderful flavor and (for a latakia-based blend) a pretty good aroma. On the other, it's FAR too mild for me. Although this blend seems to be "bite free" for many smokers, I've roasted my tongue on it several times because the flavor is so weak that I end up puffing far too hard in the vain hope of actually getting a full-bodied taste from it. Also, there are far too many humectants (or something) on this leaf -- I've had one tin open for more than three months now and it's still overly moist. To be fair, though, I'll again emphasize how pleasant the taste is. The VAs are top-notch and possess a lot of sweetness, and the latakia is quite smooth. I mixed some FM with some burley and the batch is currently aging. Hopefully, the burley will give this tobacco enough "kick" to be satisfying while preserving something of the original taste. This is probably good for those who are just beginning to sample latakia and/or don't like much in the way of nicotine.

| This is a great tobacco blend, if you let it age and dry out a bit, that helps the vinegar smell. The VA's become a bit sweet and the Cavendish take on a a somewhat nutty flavor, there is also a slight chocolate flavor. It is a bit gooey at the bottom of the pipe but it is easily overlooked. This blend is very similar to bulk 5110, some even think it is the same. This is my least favorite Frog Morton blend, but I will say that a modest Frog is better than most.

| This is a great tobacco. After opening the tin you are treated to a slightly vinegary aroma (The standard McClelland ketchup smell, I guess). When the vinegar smell subsides, I find the aroma of this to be quite pleasant, perhaps a bit rich.
This is an outstanding tobacco for those who find aromatics a bit too sweet and English blends a bit strong. It bridges the gap well, and always smokes well in nearly any pipe, with sewage pipes being the exception, not that I've tried it, but i could imagine that tasting rather awful.
This blend is also not too strong so it is good for an all day smoke and won't bring those around you to tears or argument. I highly recommend this blend, especially to people who can't decide on their favorite style of pipe tobacco.

| It's always amazing to me the wild swings of opinion in rating pipe tobacco blends. Some say too much latakia, others not enough. I guess I fall into the latter category. I like the blend, it just seems mild and lacking in the latakia kick I was hoping for. I normally like a Balkan mixture and have yet to find a blend that overpowers with latakia!
All that said, this was a nice early, or first pipe smoke...mild and ready to go right out of the tin, no drying needed - at least for me.
Aromatic smokers may want to try this as an adventure into English, or latakia though?

| Frog Morton was my first experience with a Latakia blend. As so many new pipe smokers I started out with the mild aromatics and quickly became bored of them. I decided to try FM because of the reviews stating that it is a good transition from aromatics to "English" tobaccos. The tin aroma was that of old shoe leather and I was a bit apprehensive to say the least. The first bowl full was a less than pleasant experience as I struggled to get through it. I don't think I was prepared for the overbearing Latakia. Long story short, I set the tin aside for a week or so and then decided to give it another go. This time it was a totally different story. I really enjoyed the smoke and my overall thought was, "Wow, this is really good tobacco." Every bowl full since has been even better than the last. There's nothing I can add to the numerous reviews regarding the taste and quality of FM. I do however concur that this is a nice transition for the aromatic smoker and can attest to that aspect. FM is now my favorite tobacco to date and I look forward to trying the other FM blends. I would imagine that FM also serves as a stepping stone to fuller and more complex tobaccos as my palate matures which may contribute to a lot of the lesser ratings by the more experienced smokers.

| 12/16/2007 - As a new pipe smoker my inexperience seems to get the best of me. I tend to smoke fast which doesn't bode well with most tobacco blends I've tried. Tongue bite is no friend of mine.
As a result I began reading reviews; particulary tobaccos that have been reviewed the most and contained descriptions of little to no bite.
I came across the Frog - who could resist a pipe smoking frog sitting on a log enjoying this Virginia/Latakia blend? I purchased a tin locally and couldn't wait to try it.
The aroma from the newly opened tin smelled thick of bar-b-que sauce - yes bar-b-que sauce. The first bowl smoked fairly smooth and cool. Room note had hints of soapiness that did not easily offend family.
Since this is my first Latakia blend I have nothing to compare it to other than to say it is a mild, somewhat slow burning, and a cool smoke. Most importantly no tongue bite. The last third of the bowl smokes the smoothest and with the fullest flavor in my opinion.
Based on other reviews and my own experience, this may be a good choice for those liking a Virginia/Latakia blend, however, it is not an everyday smoke for me. Once a week is a nice change of pace.

| From the first time I started dabbling in pipes 15 years ago, I always loved the smell of latakia, but I have never liked the taste of the bulk latakia blends at the local shops. Call me a light-weight. After settling in on Virginias and not trying a latakia for 10 years I started reading some reviews of the Frog, I decided to give it a whirl just to branch out. Boy howdy am I glad I did! After my mule brought a tin for me, I couldn?t wait to pop it open. The smell was fantastic, but doubts still lingered? Would it just knock me out? Well upon the first light, it sure did, but in the best way possible! I can honestly say, this is one of the best balanced blends I?ve ever had. The latakia is ever present, but is harmonized so nicely with the Virginias. It burns nicely and is really cool compared to some of my favorite VA blends. Try as I might, I can?t get the Frog to bite. If you?ve been considering dabbling in latakias, Frog Morton is the one to try first.

| I had a love hate relationship with Frog Morton. I appreciated it's qualities of leaving little to no tongue bite, the unique pleasant taste, and a roomnote that is at least tolerable to non-smokers. I could not get over the low nicotine strength.
Well, I have changed. Apparently nicotine is not really good for me. A visit to the hospital confirmed the fact. I have cut down on the amount of smoking and strength of tobacco. I can really appreciate Frog Morton now. Frog Morton is a great tobacco. It truly is an all day blend. I recommend it to any sensible smoker, who doesn't need nicotine shot.
Well done; I will stick with the Frogs.

| This is yet another success by McClelland. They seem to be able to take any mixture and keep it from biting. This is extremely important to me and my smoking tastes. If it bites, even partially, I won't smoke it - period.
The Frog does not bite and has a wonderful spice/incense aroma that is best enjoyed with the the "nasal taste" rather than the tounge.
Latakia takes center stage but doesn't dominate. The virginia compliments well imparting a little "grassyness" though not in an unpleasant way.
This is very similar to Black Watch by ThePiperoom.com, which I similar to the Frog.
The two blends have ever so slight a topping, though Frog's topping is stronger than Black Watch and has more "spice" to it - but I like the spice.
All in all the Frog is a winner. Defintely worth a try for any pipe smoker from aromatic to English fans.
This blend is a modern classic. Well done McClelland

| This is the first of the FM series that I tried and I found this to be an excellent blend. There is little to no tongue bite and the aroma is very pleasing, even to my wife. This burns down to a nice white ash at the bottom of the bowl and has a very agreeable taste all the way to the finish.

| My first experience with the venerable Frog, from a two year old tin, which required a day of drying before smoking.
Much has been already said about this modern classic, so I'll refrain from trying to re-invent the wheel. Suffice it to say, this is one fine 'baccy.

| After reading so many good things about this blend I knew I wanted to give this a shot. I was just at my local tobacco shop, though not one in the chain I go to often at all, and was excited to see the frog morton and quickly put down my 8 bucks for a tin.
I like the flavor, nice amount of Latakia, but realize this blend is not for me. I kept thinking "where is the smoke?" There is truly no appreciable volume of smoke, and it just does not satiate my palate....it lacks the fullness and richness I really go for.

This is definately a lataka lovers mixture to say the least. It smokes dry and has a somewhat pleasant taste, but it is not one of my favorite blends. The aroma is not a crowd pleaser until you put it out. Good quality tobacco though.

| This was one of my initial entries into latakia. I have since moved on to many others, but I like this blend a lot. It is my 2nd favorite "frog" next to FMATP. I have a tin of FMOTB but have not tried it as yet. I have not tried FMOTT yet either, but I have tried the bulk 5110 and did not really care for it a lot.

| Hud said: "Cool, smoky, flavorful? Yes" and he is absolutely right. Frog Morton burns nice and cool, and I haven't been able to make it bite yet. I love it! It has a full, yet not strong, flavor that is rich and creamy. I recall it producing volumes of smoke when my tin was new, but I have since let it dry out (I'm not a constant smoker) and the smoke volume has decreased. The most recognizable characteristic of Frog Morton, to me, is the tin aroma, which reminds me of the creosote treated telephone poles planted in my back yard when I was younger.
I love aromatics, but one review at this website suggested I give Frog Morton a try - I'm glad I did. It is quite a nice non-aromatic for those of us aromatic smokers out there. A welcomed change of pace for me.

| Frog Morton is a cool, smooth and satisfying blend. It has the character of an English mixture, but is lighter and sweeter than a lot of the other Virginia/Latakia blends out there; for that reason, I enjoy Frog Morton the most in warmer weather, when my usual fuller, stronger English mixtures are a bit too heavy. There's a pleasant interplay between the Virginia and Latakia here; neither seems to dominate. There are delicate notes of brown sugar and maple in the flavor, and as Frog Morton ages a little, I detect a bit of maple in the tin aroma as well. Frog Morton is a little on the sweet side to be an all-day, everyday smoke for me. It might be a good "starter" English mixture for those more accustomed to flavored aromatics, and, as I already noted, it's an outstanding warm-weather English blend. The high quality is typical of McClelland tobaccos, though it is a bit moist straight out of a fresh tin; a little drying-time is recommended. At the proper moisture level, Frog Morton is an effortless smoke requiring few relights. The room note doesn't seem to raise as many objections as do most English mixtures. Love it or hate it, the artwork on the tin does set Frog Morton apart from the other tobacco cans on the shelf-- it is different.

| When Frog came out I quickly bought a tin, mainly for the tin art. Once I opened the tin and gave it a test run I was won over. Frog is one of my cycle tobaccos, meaning I'll smoke this for a while and then smoke something else for a while, always keeping some on hand for the swing back. This is a dark tobacco mixture in the tin and comes a little over damp. McClelland has adjusted Frog's humidity downward over time, I find it about right today meaning it comes "fresh" but it still needs a little air out. This is a coarse, soft tobacco, thats easy to load. Light, tamp, relight and be prepared for a smoky room. It is great outdoors. For me the Latakia and Virginia are balanced pretty well. But that means that you have to find some enjoyment in Latakia. For me, the Virginias never dominate the smoke but just seem to keep the smoke balanced and interesting. For me it is lightly tart and a little creamy. The wisps of smoke off the rim have a smell of charred wood which I find enjoyable. I have tried to puff as hard as possible to get a bite from this blend and failed. I tend to smoke Frog in medium sized bowls.

| Well. I suppose I could review this blend and compare it to Nightcap, or Penzance, or Old Ironsides, or Pirate Cake but why? Sheesh, smoke what you like, for what it is. Not for what it isn't. A powerhouse of flavors, deep in complexity? No. Cool, smoky, flavorful? Yes, Frogmorton is all of those. A great intoduction to the taste of latakia, very straightforward with absolutely no bite no matter how much of a puffer you are. The only complaint is the moisture out of the tin.

| 10/28/2004:I am going four stars on this one even though I am not completely taken with this one. It may be the only English style mixture I could sneak by the wife without her protesting the "stink" of my clothes. McClellands 2015 really got her protesting and if I can't smoke that and be in the same house this Frog Morton will due as a compromise solution. I will update this review later if this too is shot down! Anyway this is a good blend if you don't mind a little "nougatty" aromatic presence in your English. Your tongue kind of does do a "doubletake" on first puff, but hang in there don't dump it yet! It does taste a bit more traditional as the smoke progresses. I think this may grow on me as long as I don't smoke a straight English or Balkan immediately afterward.
11/16/2006 Update: An excellent introduction to blends that include Latakia. No longer in my rotation.

| After my experience with Nightcap by Dunhill, I didn't think I'd find a latakia that I could appreciate. I WAS WRONG! Frog Morton has revived my taste buds. Easy to light and burns so well in almost every pipe I've put it in. And with little to no bite. It has a bold flavor which reminds me of a tea that I love, Lapsang Souchong (a peat-smoked tea), and in fact, they compliment each other nicely. Room note was pretty decent for a latakia (resident room-note expert said it was ok for in-house smoking :-) ). Flavor had a nice consistency from start to finish, which I find to be a little unusual for most tobaccos. I'll get this one again, for sure.

| Being a huge fan of Tolkien, the name of this one captured my imagination straight away as I sat down in my mind's eye next to Gandalf and Bilbo and lit a relaxing bowl in the cool evening breeze. (Okay, the pipe smoking frog on the tin and the venerable McClelland name helped too.) :P
Reading the description on the tin, I expected something on the order of a Balkan blend, or at least a medium English rich in Latakia . What I was presented with upon tin opening fragrance and first light was an English/ aromatic crossover. This is the tobacco I expected Iwan Ries 'Three Star Blue' to be like, based on R.C.H's description in 'The Ultimate Pipe Book' which it most certainly is not. That however is another story and review so let's get back to the Frog....
I agree with those who say that this one tastes like it smells in the tin. There's Latakia in there but it is sweetened and takes a back seat to the Cavendish component with which it's blended. Is that chocolate or mocha I taste? I'm convinced it's the latter. I find this blend difficult to keep lit in a way which is similar to Tinder Box's 'Philosopher' which leads me to believe it may have a humectant as well. The ash of the two are almost identical with the tell tale black bits left by incomplete combustion. Bystanders have remarked that it smells good compared to my usual afternoon smoke (Dunhill 965) so a pleasant room note can be expected if that's a consideration for ya.
I don't hate this tobacco by any means but I won't be writing any purple prose about it either. It's just not my cup of tea, or bowl of weede as it were.
Somewhat recommended but it won't be a repeat by this pipier at least.

| I am a dedicated smoker of the Frog. I use this as my all day smoke. I find that it keeps fresh in its can for long periods. This being the case I keep several cans open wherever I smoke: garage, car, office, rec room, etc. I think the Frog is the perfect blend for me. Taste is very satisfying over the entire day. It is a dark Latakia taste that I enjoy. I never have nicotine problems with the Frog. The tobacco lights well, and stays lit to the bottom of the bowl. This also means that the tobacco smokes dry and has no gurgle. I enjoy some tobaccos that are stronger than Frog, and some that are milder. But I always return to the Frog for real enjoyment. New pipes are always broken in with the Frog as I find that it does not unduly flavor the pipe so as to spoil the pipe for other blends.
Update: 7/25/06. It has been almost 4 years since I posted my notes on the Frog. I still enjoy it very much and fairly often. I continue to try other blends, and from time to time smoke much more of the other blends than I smoke the Frog. But, I always come back to the Frog when I get tired of the others, or when they start to disappoint me. The Frog has become my "old faithful" and when I need to re-adjust my taste in Tobacco, or just sit back and enjoy a smoke, it is time for a Frog. Always satisfying, always a good smoke.

| This is maybe a solid 2.5 - it's just a little too sicky sweet for my tastes really. It's not bad - it smokes real well, not too hard to light (might want to let a bowlfull air out a bit before lighting up if you just got the tin, though).
It's generally OK but like I said - a little too sicky sweet for me. I had to pick up a tin to see what the fuss was about - heard so much about it - but overall I think that Penzance is my true blue as far as blends strong in latakia go.
The side stream smoke is, however, quite pleasant on the nostrils. A 2 star rating might be rather harsh. Perhaps by the time I finish off this tin my mind will change (I've only smoked about six bowls of the stuff, suppose my review should be taken with a grain of salt.)

| A very fine blend I found Frog Morton to be indeed!!
I first tried this a few months back at a friends house. He had numerous fine tobaccos (mostly of the Dunhill brand) and then Frog Morton. I first tried some Early Morning Pipe, and the flavor in it somewhat resembled that of a burn pile. Lastly, I tried the Frog and at first it gave off an almost soap flavored taste. After I got it nice and burnt inside, it gave a very rewarding flavor. It almost tastes like that of the India "beedie" cigarettes after you smoke it a while. The flavor to me is still unknown, but to say the least I love it.I'd liek to shake the man's hand that made it.
Frog Morton was my first experience with Latakia as well. I'd like to find more brands (although in my area fine tins are limited) with this fine weed in to enjoy.
I went several months searching in pallor until I found a can of Frog Morton myself. I ended up having to travel about 60 miles to a far away mall to get it. I then ended up paying $14.25 for 100 grams, but a great graduation present to say the least

| I'm kind of the English traitor, as I do love both Englishes and aromatics. However, I think this does balance out my opinions of different tobaccos. When I go for English, I definitely go for this one or its brother "On the town." The aroma upon opening the tin is very smoky, like you walked past an old house at night in the country with a roaring fire inside. The moisture content is a little bit much, but I'd certainly must have it more moist than too dry as it can always dry out. I'd recommend doing that a bit. This tobacco ages very well, too. When you go out and buy it, (not IF, mind you), buy two and stick one in the basement somewhere where you'll forget about it for a year or so. It's well worth it.
As far as taste goes, I find it tastes very much like it smells, which is a beautiful thing to find in pipe tobaccos. This tobacco tastes and smells exactly as I would want a smoky English to taste. Very smoky, but also slightly sweet from the VAs present. It burns slow, and in a well broken-in pipe it will burn all the way down. This is definitely the blend I go to for a walk in the woods on a cool day. I'd highly recommend smoking it with a cup of Lapsang Suchon tea, which is a very smoky tasting chinese black tea.
Bottom line, you owe it to yourself to keep a tin or so of this around. Get on it quick and stop wasting precious smoking time.

| I remember my first tin of Frog Morton . I was new to Latikia, I think Crowning achievement was my first of this type and FM was next in line. It was January and my passion for the leathery taste of the new tobacco was at a peak. I smoked three tins of this in a row and I remember thinking I would never smoke anything else ! But by the fourth tin something strange happened. It was a though I had become immune. Suddenly it seemed bland and I decided to move on and I have never returned. I think I just over dosed on this very monochromatic blend but it was nice while it lasted. If you have never tried it you should , it?s still a very good memory for me.

| A mild to medium tasting blend made of quality virginia and latakia. Although it is not really my cup of tea since I mostly enjoy straight virginia but no doubt a quality blend. Recommended.

| First, this is a blend that will definitely have to be purchased over and over and over again. Frog Morton is without a doubt awesome.
Upon opening the can one does not receive the original "ketchup" odor that you usually get with McClelland blends. Instead you are greeted with a wonderful aroma of Latakia. The blend is not heavy but you definitely notice it. If you do not life Early Morning or Nightcap by Dunhill, try Frog Morton, the Latakia is not near as heavy in odor.
The tobacco will burn a wonderful light grey color, and the smoke will just pour. This blend, no matter the size of bowl you are using, does not require a lot of relights. When you need to relight just graze the flame. For some reason this is just an ?easy? blend to smoke.
The taste that one receives is a very cool one, in a way almost like a mint. There is no ?mint? taste, it?s just that cool. There is not a single bit of tongue bite no matter how you smoke it. The room will be filled with a pleasant odor, not like an aromatic, but still very pleasant to be around.
This is the first in the Frog Morton series, and I imagine that the others will be just as good, if not better.

| A sweetened dark concoction that will not bite, no matter how you smoke it. This is definitely not a Va. flake, that certainly must have been a typo. The only recommendation I can think of is that it will burn in a pipe, and doesn't bite. It just doesn't suit me.

| I am in the process of going back to some of my old favorite tobaccos that I have stored away. This review concerns a four year old can of Frog Morton. This blend used to be a regular in my rotation a couple of years ago. I had to give this a try to see if I wanted to include it in my lineup again. Except for Squadron Leader, I usually reserve my English blends for the evening. Frog Morton was one, if we can call it an English blend (?), that I enjoyed any time of the day. I now find my all day smokes to be either Squadron Leader, Stratford, or Barbary Coast. Somehow Frog Morton just can't get me to jump like it used to. I would finish my day with something like Dunhill's My Mixture 965 at that time. I might be primed for the Latakia with Froggy, but I could really enjoy it in 965 late in the day. Well, 965 isn't in my regular line up anymore, either. I will occasionally pop a tin of the old Dunhill stuff now and then, for a treat. My evenings are usually spent with Durbar, Nightcap,Esoterica's Penzance, Balkan Sasieni, or, if I would like a Virginia/Perique blend...Haddo's Delight. Frog Morton is a great all day smoke, however. It doesn't overpower you. It's great to hand to a piper who want to make the switch from aromatics to English blends. Some will stay within this "pergatory" of tobacco styles, but others will move in another direction to satify their tastes. I moved on. Even a can as old as mine doesn't excite me even if it burns cool and dry without a hitch. If you are a new English smoker I would give this a four star rating. It won't challenge you. Well, it doesn't challenge me, either. I'll step my rating down a notch to three stars simply because Frog Morton doesn't offer me the complexity that I am looking for. I didn't spend my time describing the experience of smoking Frog Morton because so many others have so well. Still, I would recommend that all who haven't tried Frog Morton should give it a whirl.

| When I first tired Frog Morton, I hated it. But, I kept smoking the tin I had, and now, about six ounces later, this has become my favorite tobacco. I wonder if those who have given it a bad rating, just need to develop a taste for it, as I had to? Or maybe not; maybe they just didn't like it, which is okay, too. As Mark Twain put it, "A difference of opinion is what makes horse races." But this tastes and smells like tobacco to me. It's a slow-burning blend with Virginia smoothing out the Latakia and adding a touch of sweetness. I can't fathom why I didn't like it at first, but I'm now on my third tin and it's become a twice-a-day pleasure. It stays lit, gives me a nice ash for a cake, and not much of a nicotine kick, so I can smoke it at the end of the day. If only they would design a better tin.

| This was also my first Latakia and I have enjoyed it since. Its a nice slightly sweet slightly smokey blend that easy to smoke, pack, and keep lit. I tend to prefer this blend in colder weather and will keep it around for the winter. Not that it gets that cold here in S. Florida! But it just doesn't smoke right on 90+ days :)

| Revised 07-16-2005
I recently opened a tin I had stashed away 3 years ago and decided to revisit this "amphibious" blend. My initial impression was that the humectant was very noticable in the tin and also in the first third of the bowl when smoking. I have a soft spot for this blend because it was the first latakia blend I tried after deciding to venture outside the aromatic domain. But, even so, I am afraid I can't seem to enjoy this blend like I used to. The latakia in this blend is of the cyprian variety which is less complex than the syrian type as well as a tad softer and sweeter. The VA in this is of the matured variety which is also not as spicy or bitey as some of the other VA's in the McClelland line-up. Overall this is a Latakia blend with training wheels. I suppose it is a good place to start and may even use this blend as my older son's first pipe when he turns 18. As for myself, the FMAP is now my favorite in the series.

| This was the first Latakia blend that I tried. Prior to this selection, I had smoked some virginias and virginia/burley mixtures, and I had seemed to find them lacking in flavor. I was doing some research, and decided that this blend would be a good first venture into the world of Latakia. I must say that I was, and still am, pleasantly satisfied with this Latakia/Virginia blend. It seems to pack enough flavor and strength to be a good smoke for most occasions. My wife prefers that I smoke it outside, due to the slightly strong room note, because she prefers the aromatics. I would recommend this blend to anyone who wants a good first Latakia.

i have to agree.i swear while i was smoking it,i got the taste of chocolate now and then.i`m not saying thats a bad thing, just not expected from an english blend.i would recommend this blend to someone who`s changing over from aromatics to english blends,it would be a good transition blend.i wish mccelland would bring out a bulk blend of the frogs.i would buy pounds of fmott.i will keep smoking my fmott, and cellar the rest of the fm for another day. p.s. i love the tin art.

| As numerous reviewers have said, Frog Morton is a great cross-over blends from aromatics:
If you've been smoking aromatic burley blends flavored with Elmer's Glue or melted Saran Wrap, and are looking for a Latakia-based blend with the same flavoring, you'll really enjoy Frog Morton. The gummy, melted plastic taste comes through clearly, with a nice low smokey note from the Latakia.
Based on its reviews and my experience with other McClelland blends, I was very eager to try Frog Morton. Well, I've tried it, and it's hands-down the worst tobacco I've ever put in a pipe.
As others have said, this is a "love it or hate it" tobacco. I agree.

| I was lucky that a friend of mine payed a visit to New-York a week ago, so I could lay my hands on some tobacco's, that are not available in Belgium.
Frog Morton is a very seductive Latakia-blend, but it lacks the complexity of London Mixture or Nightcap. In contrast to the overwhelming scent, the taste is very mild and discrete. A tobacco for quiet evenings, not asking too much attention but simply present as the blackbird singing on the roof.
I love it, but you musn't expect sensations that it can't give.
So 2 stars or 3 ? A bit difficult, but as giving stars means that you also have a certain responsability towards others .... (the recommendation ....) I stick to 2, because there is always a change that some would be disappointed about the lack of character.

| In my reviews, I have never used the word 'mellow' to describe a tobacco--until now. McClelland's Frog Morton, my final stop in this anuran series, is initially a mellow smoke. With that said, it is nothing special and 'mellow' as a descriptive is not actually favourable. The appearance of this weed is mostly dark leaf (the curious moist quality of which reminds me of the general quality of many aromatics). About half way through the bowl, the mellowness fades and is replaced by a peppery flavour that is nauseating. I have tried Frog Morton in different pipes (large and small) with the same sickening results. Conclusively, I am not fond of the 'Frog Morton' series even now finding 'on the Town' much less enjoyable than my initial review indicated. I suppose that I will try this again (if only in the form of Hartwell's Chesdin Mixture that I hear is Frog Morton relabelled). This is realistically a one-star tobacco, but in comparison to the rest of the series it is a tad better than 'on the Bayou' hence the two stars (even though I cannot, in good consciousness, recommend it).

| First encountered this blend from a stranger on a lone path in the northern part of the midwest. A quiet fellow, he didn't say much, but the aroma coming from his pipe said enough. He offered me a bowl and one for the road, and I searched for a tin immediately upon arriving at my destination four days later. A homegrown vintage of delicious Virginia leaf varieties mixed with Latakias that can't be beat. The texture may seem a little moist, but it burns well. Somehow, this mixture retains its perfect moisture level for long periods of time. Though it may not be the absolute best Latakia blend, it is in my top five based on the cost to quality ratio of this fine tobacco.

| Frog Morton is one of those tobaccos which sets a standard for a type. Many have tried to copy it, a few have succeeded, but it still stands as a unique type of English blend. It is rich in Latakia but the main flavor is high-quality Virginia. It has a light topping and sweetener that is so well integrated that many smokers don't even realize it (indeed, many argue strenuously that no topping or sweetener is present). It is easy going, doesn't bite, has ample flavor and decent complexity. It has also given birth to three additional blends, which to my taste improve on a good thing.

| I started with the Frog Morton spin offs and not the original product. I didn?t expect this one to be as great as Across the Pond or On the Town, but was I proved wrong. This has the more characteristic McClelland Worcestershire aroma in the tin, but the taste and burn are exceptional. The Frog, as I am finding out, is a magnificent critter in all its manifestations.
The leaf is dark stoved Virginia in thick cut ribbons and rubbed out flakes with a nice background of Latakia. The smoke is cool and even, with one charring light usually enough to keep the whole thing going for about an hour of pure smoking delight. The room note is heavenly, and the Latakia, while evident, takes its part gently in the background without crowding out any of the other players. The taste develops and gets better as the bowl progresses. At times the warm & toasty Virginias stand out, but not for long, because the Latakia rears its head to provide curiosity to the nose and palate. This is a tobacco I could smoke all day. The only reason I don?t is that I would run out of the tin in a couple days and have to rush right down to the store to buy another.
I take back all the nasty things I?ve said about McClelland and its barbeque tin aroma throughout the years. When I first tried them, I was too young and foolish to appreciate the quality and magnificence of its pedigree. Frog is a must try for every pipe smoker. Even though taste is such a personal thing, I can?t imagine anyone not liking it, especially those new to non-aromatic English blends. While so many tobaccos are overrated, Frog Morton truly deserves all its accolades.
As for all the embarrassment about the chintzy tin art and the 3rd grade level froggy illustrations, get over it! Okay, so it?s not a visual masterpiece, and it?s a bit on the cutesy side. Is there no room for a bit of playfulness? Besides, it?s the contents that count, and the Frog never disappoints.

| This is a nice Latakia blend, wih a certain sweetness that some say comes from casing and others say is a function of aging. In either case, IMHO this is a well-crafted, easy-to-smoke blend. | I don't usually like light english blends: even when I would like an all day latakia mixture, I really can't stand those mild products with little latakia, lots of cavendish and little taste. I find stuff like Old Dublin, Celebrated Sovereign and Highland Targe extremely boring, and I downright despise these blends. You can understand how my hopes for Frog Morton were extremely low... and that's where I was pleasantly surprised! I won't digress long on the characteristics of this blend, as many other reviews here pointed them out precisely. The only difference is that I don't find it exceedingly moist. As soon as you light it up, you are welcomed by a thick smoke which nonetheless is not overwhelming, and has a rich velvety, creamy, quality. The Latakia is clearly present, but nicely rounded and integrated into the other ingredients in a perfect whole. You can feel its smokiness, but wrapped in a soft sweetness that never fails to caress tongue and palate. Sometimes you can almost feel chocolate notes, and a refreshing effect: I doubt there is menthol as someone hinted, anyway. Surely a merit of the processing (stoving?) more than of the ingredients or flavoring agents. You can hardly feel a harsh note, something that goes out of the chorus: it is a truly beautifully integrated whole. Sometimes you can get the impression that it lacks in body (especially in some pipes, even from the same brand: I have smoked it in three Dunhills from different years, one Savinelli and one Castello, and the taste was best in a Dunhill bruyere from the early '80s). It does indeed, but the taste is nice nonetheless. It is somewhat reminiscent of the orange-topped Ashton Type 2 in cut and flavor, but better. As an all-day smoke, it doesn't tire the mouth and never cloys, yet providing more satisfaction than I can get from other lighter latakia mixtures: it won't become anyway an all-day, every-day blend for me. That's because it does become very soon boring (and the initial impression of sweetness is reduced once you get used to it) if not alternated with some stronger/different blends (and it certainly won't replace the equally sweet but tastier Mephisto or London Mixture in my rotation). Anyway, it's what actually comes closer to my idea of a fine lighter latakia mixture, and to be honest I finished my tin in a matter of few days!

| After a nice steak dinner with a good Merlot, I opened my first tin of Frog Morton to sample what others had such widely varying views on. I noted a black, oily, flake with a few light specs, and a gentle aroma of Latakia. Upon lighting up, however, my taste buds tingled with what I can only describe as a "rich" flavor. It reminded me of my first sip of Lagavullin...loaded with smoky peat, and my favorite single malt to this day. The Frog smoked cool, and surprisingly stayed lit longer than expected, although reliights became more frequent farther into the bowl. This is my third English blend, and while I really liked Rennaisance, this seems richer at the moment. I have been smoking Mel Feldman's Civil War earlier today while breaking in a new pipe, so I swithced to a Meerschaum to try this. Whatever the reason, this was the perfect after dinner flavor...rich and satisfying, to me. I will be looking forward to more of the same. UPDATE: I have finished my first tin of Frog Morton, and ordered more. I have tried this in several pipes, and enjoyed the consistent result in each. It continues to deliver a mild, consistent flavor without being harsh or bitey. Having sampled several English blends, this one continues to deliver for me, and I highly recommend it.

| Having read from ASP that this is a good beginner English, I decided to give it a try. I'd already fallen in love with Nightcap, switching from Blue Note and Celtic Mist, so I'd already developed a taste for latakia, but I thought a milder, less "present" blend as far as room note, might be good for me to use around my friends.
SO, I popped the tin open. Now a few other reviewers here have said that they didn't notice the traditional ketchup smell that McClelland is famous for in this blend. I did. I thought I'd knocked over a bottle of it, based on the smell. Still, that's not always a bad smell, so I went ahead and packed some in.
It was wet, at least to my preferences. Even so, smoking it wasn't a problem, and it did burn fairly cleanly. The problem was that darned ketchup smell had transferred to the smoke. Worse still, it really hit as an aftertaste.
So, if I was trying to crossover to an English blend, and this was the first one I'd tried, I'd have given up.
Since the first pipeful I've tried it a few more times, and let it dry, and I'm still unimpressed.

A year later and I still crave this candy once in a great while, though I rarely keep it around at this point. The Hostess Fruit Pie and Yodels of the tobacco world? I often wonder why I've bothered to smoke it, half way through...but I keep going back for more...
And that tin I bought a year ago...still moist... *shiver*
-----------
After the many reviews of Frog Morton, I had to give this classic a shot. Ok the Tolkien thing sold me too. Good show McClelland...I don't part easily with my hard or ill gotten cash.
I can see why it is so popular. I have come to think of it as "English Light"? A good break when you don't want drug store sweetness or the punch of the heavier blends.
I love the earthy tones and smell upon opening the can. A bit of muddiness to the texture (twigs and all) and yes, the weird worscester sauce smell. It does conjure up Shire-esque visions though I suspect the hobbits would want something a bit stronger and sweeter (more on Dark Twist later...)
My first smoke of Frog Morton enraptured me. I thought... *This* is it! I was sure I'd cast aside both the drug store brands and the stronger non-aromatics for this as a regular treat. The taste was so completely different than most of the other tobaccos I've tried (which admittedly aren't a whole lot).
The wetness and getting the right amount of drying time frustrated me a bit but I think it has for the most part aired itself out. For the claims of no bite - this little b@*&ard bit me good once or twice...but perhaps it is the new pipe and my relative inexperience with pipes.
Even two weeks later it can still be a bit uncooperative as far as gurgle and relights, but that could also be me. For the most part though it will burn clear to the bottom and leave a decent ash with a bit of persistence. Fantastic white smoke. Lots of it.
I just took about a 1/4 pipefull with me while getting my car lubed. It lasted until I returned 30 minutes later (so much for 10 minute oil changes). Considering I look like a Hell's Angel compared to most of the upscale locals - my smoking this down in a hand-cut freeform bent pipe on a bench outside of the Mr Good Lube must have been a sight.
Is that casing bubble gum? For some weird reason that keeps coming to mind but not in a bad way. I enjoy the casing and the room note. It is very fruity but not at all overbearing. Very little tobacco taste comes through and I don't get a hit/rush off of this (my first bowl of Highland Targe did infact leave me with the feeling that a Highlander had kicked me down the stairs).
It is pleasant and light with the underlay of the English smokiness. I am sure friends would enjoy it around a campfire or dining room and that itself may make it worth keeping some on hand.
I have found that as the smoking of this has continued I have found it to become slightly more boring. Unlike Deep Hollow which I still can pop in and smoke with some excitement.
Frog Morton will likely come into my rotation again - and I do recommend it to those seeking an "English Lite" type mixture, but for now I will probably step onto another tobacco road, and see where my feet (or perhaps tongue and mouth) carry me.

| Like many people, the Frog served as my introduction to the world of Latakia mixtures. And a nice, smooth, hand-holding kind of introduction it is. It always provides a smooth smoke with a sweet, unnamable aroma to it. I have since come to enjoy more traditional English mixtures without the cavendish that is so prominent in the Frog, but I still keep some of this (or one of its close relatives) on hand for a change of pace. I have also used it to convert aromatic smokers to English smokers.
I have found that I like to sometimes mix the frog with more traditional English mixtures like Squadron Leader or EMP; these tend to liven up the Frog, while the Frog tends to mellow out these blends a bit. Frog Morton is a must-try for all pipe-smokers, I would argue, especially those wanting to move from aromatic blends to English blends without a significant shock to their system.

| October-2003. Frog Morton. Delicious latakia, with a depth of flavour that does not overpower at all.The Virginia remains more in the back-ground and enhances this blend perfectly.Highly enjoyable and does not bite. Pleasant all the way to the bottom of the bowl, without leaving any bitterness at all. Lights very easily, great to smoke and only requires the occasional tamp. My favourite Frog so far.Highly reccomended. 8 out of 10.

| I decided to try FM, based on the reviews here, as I do enjoy a latakia / Virginia combo, but I will make this short and sweet.. I tried FM in three different pipes, and on every attempt, the center of my tongue went absolutely numb for as long as an hour. Is there glycol in the casing, I wonder. I have never experienced this with a tobacco before, and after the third pipeful, I threw out the can. There are just too many excellent latakia / Virginia blends out there to replace this, ... this ... well you get the idea.

| I bought Frog Morton to try on the strength of some of the reviews above. Many people whose taste has guided me to very pleasant tobaccos have said that they like this blend. I do not. I am actually shocked at the divergence of opinion on this tobacco. De gustibus non disputandum, I guess.
On opening the tin, the tobacco is faintly damp and quite sticky. After it dries a little, it lights easily and smokes evenly. There is no bite at all, no matter how hard you puff. These are the good things about Frog Morton.
The taste has been called monochromatic by other reviewers and that is fair. But, I have seen many monochrome photos that I admire and enjoy looking at. Not so this stuff. The taste of Frog Morton is boring. It is like a latakia-spiked candy bar, sweet and sticky to the end. I will spend my time in the future with tobaccos that taste like tobacco, not with this stuff. If you enjoy Frog Morton, please go ahead. I won't be competing with you for the last tin of this on the shelf, that's for sure.

| Upon opening the tin I noticed the smell of vinegar. Then when I put my nose closer, I smelled latakia, and not much else. The tobacco is in long strands, so it was a bit of trouble to pack. Nothing terrible however. It was a bit moist, but it fired up just fine. It has a strong, smokey, slightly sweet flavor, with hints of chocolate. No bite whatsoever. It has a very mild nicotine strength. The flavor is a bit monochromatic to me. Towards the end of the bowl I notice the vinegar smell in the room note, as well as the smoke. I will finish the tin I have, but this stuff is just too plain for me.
Addendum: I have smoked this one a while now, and it has all the charm of vinegar soaked charcoal. Smoking it is a bit like kissing the bottom of my barbeque grill...

Several months later and still love it. Try McClelland 5110 as it's Frogs budget minded cousin Toad. Maybe a little less latikia that Frog.

| This a good latakia blend when I am in the mood for something smokey, simple and sweet. It burns cool and is monochromatic in flavor. While it is not a complex blend it does have a good flavor and I like to smoke this occasionally when I study or read. Something to smoke that I dont have to concentrate on to get its potential. A good occasional smoke.

| With all this fuss about Frog Morton on this site I had to go out and get a tin last night. Frankly, I was very frightened by the results.
My first thought when I got to look at the label was, "Geez,..did somebody find this drawing at a craft fair?" I mean--take a look at the label close up. This DOES NOT look like it was drawn by a professional illustrator for the label of a major pipe tobacco manufacturer. It looks more like something you might find hanging in your Grandma's kitchen. Even the type is messed up--I've seen secretaries make better layouts in PowerPoint. In fact, the label is so unbelievably silly looking that after staring at it for a few minutes at Tinderbox I actually felt a little foolish purchasing a tin.
An awkward transaction took place:
"Um, pardon me sales person, but I'll pass on the nice Dunhill tobaccos you've been showing me, instead I'll take the tobacco in the shitty label that looks like it was drawn by a third grader."
"Uh huh yes, the one with the retarded frog on it"
"No, I'm not into Lord of the Rings, Hobbits, or wizards or anything like that. I just want to try the tobacco in the painfully ugly can"
"No, I don't need a Churchwarden pipe to go with it! Please, just put the tin in the bag before somebody sees me."
After rushing from the store, finally free of what was becoming a horrifying exercise in bad taste, I went to my car and relaxed for a few moments. I tentatively poked and sniffed at the innards of the can.
"Hmmm,.. smells like latikia and virginia. Allright, that seems safe enough--can't be too bad I suppose".
Feeling a bit reassured, I packed a pipeful of Frog Morton. It was then that the true inner evil revealed itself. After smoking but half a bowl, I immediately felt the urge to play D&D. Please Lord, help me!
Even worse, I had to fight off the unholy desire to return to Tinderbox and purchase a knobby cane and one of those God-forsaken Danish pipes carved freehand from a hunk of drift wood.
I went home and lay on the couch until the urge passed. Thankfully it did pass, however I know there are many others who get caught up in the Frog Morton web, unable to break free.
Yes, pipes are treacherous business--never doubt it. Those with questionable taste should just stay away. You could end up like one of those crusty old coots polluting the atmosphere with Prince Albert Cherry Vanilla. Or worse, you could end up with the insane desire to place Boris Vallejo "Lady Demon" posters on the wall, watch reruns of Doctor Who, and attend renaissance fairs while dressed as a druid--all while smoking a clay pipe full of Frog Morton and thinking of yourself as "colorfull." (Shudder)

| The tobacco must be aired, both to dissipate the McClelland trademark odor, and to lessen the moisture level. As I spread the tobacco to dry, I see a mostly black blend (50%+) with browns ranging from very dark to medium tan (and in this particular 100g tin, a piece of oak plywood 3/8" long, and piece of paper barred with red ink, each of which were chopped into the blend, odd!)
The tobacco lights easily and burns cleanly, not overly smokey. I can't say that I detect a casing as I smoke this blend in a Savinelli de Luxe Milano, a KS Dublin. I have just finished and ejected a very proper dry ash from the bottom of the bowl. "It took Frog Morton four years to perfect..." I wonder if the goal was a specific blend of bygone years....
The question in my mind is the Black Tobacco. The blend does not smoke or taste like a Heavy Latakia. It is far more balanced than a visual inspection would lead one to believe. I think that this blend presents itself as a Balkan: smooth and cool, spicy and woodsy. The Balkan and English smoker should enjoy testing this blend. No disappoints.

| Frog Morton, one of McClelland's better offerings, is rather mild for a latakia blend and has a strong aroma in the tin. Once lit, however, it reveals itself to be a mellow smoke with a tolerable room odor. As with all tobaccos, I would urge the smoker to have several bowls of this before drawing any final conclusions.

| Ah, lads, the Frog is a fine smoke. Just enough of the latakia to suit me taste, along with a semi-sweet chocolate flavor. This one never offends me wife (the fine Irish lass that she is) and is suitable to smoke around others. Being a lover of aromatics for years, the Frog helped introduce me to the great english blends. I would highly recommend this tobacco as a good crossover.

| I picked up a tin of the original after having tried Frog Morton on the Town (and having liked that blend a great deal), but this one left me a bit unsatisfied. The lack of oriental that is used in FMOTT may have been it, as I feel that added a lot to the blend, and without it this one seems to come off a little flat. It's not a bad smoke by any means, but it isn't one of my favorites either; I'll probably keep it around as a change-of-pace smoke but I doubt I'll buy another tin once I run out.

| Not much more needs to be said about the Frog, all the bases have been covered. Tins of this blend have been in my tobacco cupboard since I first tried it. I must agree that some drying time may be a good idea, but it still loads and lights easily enough as is. The interplay of the sweet/smoky tastes and the no-bite factor are just a couple of this blends charms. I still have about 5 tins that are dated late 90's and it's almost time to open another one. IMHO, FWIW, this is the best of the Frogs, and one of the better English blends out there. Works for me.

| Frog Morton, a member of McClelland?s Craftsbury collection, is considered an all day English smoking tobacco.
The pouch aroma is full, smooth, and rich with a smoky-sweet fragrance. This blends satisfying aroma foreshadows a well-aged and well-married tobacco blend. The Frog Morton blend utilizes, Virginia, Oriental, and Latakia tobaccos; with the majority of the composition being that of Latakia. Although considered by most to be an English blend, Frog Morton probably includes a slight casing of some sort.
Frog Morton has a beautiful ribbon cut of black and brown colored tobaccos, which are sparsely peppered with specks of yellow. This blend is quite moist yet not to the degree in which it would impart a residue upon the fingers when handled. This blend packs readily.
The initial lighting is performed easily and without an issue. A second light is rarely needed with this tobacco. The smoking aroma is smooth and pleasant enough considering this is a heavily Latakia ladened blend.
The strength of this tobacco is medium with a medium-mild taste. Frog Morton blend, simply stated, has no bite whatsoever. This unique characteristic aids in defining the blend as an all day smoke.
In closing, the Frog Morton blend is a dear favorite of mine and I always ensure that I have at least a pipe jar of it on hand.

| This is one of those "love/hate" blends.
One thing I'll say about the Frog is that I cannot ever get it to bite my tongue, no matter how hard I puff on it.
Whomever called this a pressed flake is way off.... The closest thing to Frog in bulk is Lane's HGL.
Lots of latakia here with (what I taste to be) a molasses type flavoring.
If you have a friend that smokes Captain Black who wants a good introduction to English Style blends then the Frog is for them.
I'd never hesitate to smoke this tobacco because it has body, it's creamy and smokes well all the way down. Is it for a purist? Probably NOT.

| Others have commented on this being a hybrid aromatic/english blend. Try as I might, I have a hard time placing this in the aromatic camp. Certainly not at all like Cross-Eyed Cricket (thank goodness) or even Mephisto in that regard. It is a bit sweeter than a traditional english, but not terribly so. I do not understand how it offends in that regard. I had smoked a good deal of FM before I heard it was a closet aromatic, and I never would have guessed. As Granma would say, "and Froggie seemed like such a nice boy...".
The cut makes it easy to handle, and once dried out a bit (OK, quite a bit) it packs and smokes well. The virginias, if that is what they are, are of a fairly dark nature and almost look like brown cavendish.
This blend is mild, especially considering the percentage of dark flakes in the sample that would lead one to believe that this was a latakia-laden blend. Not so. A little disappointing in that regard. the smoke is kind of, well, watery. It does gain in strength near the bottom of the bowl, but also gets kind of steamy, too, even when dried out. Why must McC be so heavy-handed with the moisture? And did you ever wonder why this stuff never molds, being so moist? Cigars certainly do. Humectants must be at play here, or maybe even more insidious chemicals... Hey, what IS that McC katsup smell, anyway?
At any rate, I would have to say that overall I prefer Frog on the Town and Frog on the Bayou to the original Frogmorton, in that these last two hold my interest a bit more than FM. Still, I will always keep FM around. It is like a good friend who's conversation can become tiring after while, but who makes a good occasional companion for old times sake.

| I just don't get it. Either you like English blends, or you don't. I have heard this blend called a "cross over blend" for those who want to try Latakia. I'm not one to avoid a blend that uses Latakia to spice things up a bit. But, when you take it, and place a casing on it, and try to pass yourself off as an English blend, then I have a problem. I know that McClellend itself does not call it an English blend, but it seems that many people who come into my local tobacconist ask for it as an English blend. I think that whoever first blended Frog Morton, did so in an attempt to have the best of both worlds. Aromatic, and English. However as with all compromises, you get something that just does not work. This tobacco does not work. Because of the heavy use of Latakia, and flavor casing, you get two tastes competing for your pallet. I love English blends, and I like aromatics, just don't mix em. I think I could get better results by mixing Captain Black, with Old Ironsides, but why would I want too?

Should I feel a little jaded and the Balkan Sobranie would be a bit to aggresive. A real Sunday morning smoke for me. As for the topping oft mentioned could'nt really notice it accept for the moisture level so it must be their in the mix, but this blend is the smoothest balkan you are likely to find. Great for breaking in a new pipe.

| I understand that every tabac manufacturer seems to feel obligated to offer some type of crossover blend in order to win new fans or entreat those back who may have moved on. Frog Morton is one of those blends. It is, in a word, singular, most unrelentingly so. I have heard it being compared to blending latakia, which is not far off. It doesn't bite, it stays lit(once suitably dried) and its aroma is mild and pleasant, even to those who are non-smokers. Yet, it is so one-dimensional that after a few bowls, my patience ceases and I desire something with more panache, strength or just plain "anything" to grab my attentions. Really, this could be called "Latakia Lite", or a "Diet Tobacco", as LSS says. NB-after all the above, I still smoke this occasionally.

| This is the first Latakia blend that I can stand. Whatever aromatic there is in this is overwhelmed by the Latakia taste, but this blend manages to transform that moldy burlap sack taste of Latakia into something much more palatable. If you are a big fan of English blends then you will probably find it perfumy. If you are an aromatic smoker you will find it musty. I think it's a tobacco that a lot of people could put up with but I don't imagine it being anyone's favorite. Take this with a great big grain of salt. Latakia is a punishment tobacco for me.
Later thoughts: I've been smoking Latakia containing blends a little longer now and have come to really like Latakia. Frog Morton is an excellent middle of the road Latakia blend. Latakia does dominate the flavor but the smoke is sweetened by it's Virginias and whatever topping they use. I can now see this being a favorite for lots of people including me ;)

| I finally got around to trying this famous blend, and wow, what a treat! It truly deserves the mantle of "ALL Day English" more than any other blend. Although I usually keep 965 around as my all day blend, this may very well replace it. Although not a terribly complex smoke, this helps to make it an all day-er, since I leave that to Penzance or Nightcap. During the day I want a tasty, full-flavored blend that I don't have to concentrate on. This stuff has full flavor in spades! It has rich creamy smoke with a sweet smokiness that never develops into anything else but goodness. In fact if you sat down and really tried to concentrate on it, you would probably tire of it quickly. It is extremely forgiving as well- never any tongue bite no matter how preoccupied you get and forget good smoke technique. This also makes it a great smoke to recommend to newbies who want to start getting into english blends. An instant Classic in my book!

| The Frog was my first venture into tobacco in a can and away from the stuff you find in jars. It was also my first taste of latakia.
I love it. It is the yard stick by which I measure all other tobaccos - Do I like it more than The Frog, or less than The Frog?
In the tin, it has a great woodsy campfire smell that kept me going muzzle down in there until I was able to get it home for a try. I think I inhaled a few small pieces.
It is consistent throughout the bowl and really fairly dry, especially when compared to the awfull, heavily cased blends in the jars.
It smokes especially well in my Nording Freehand, nearly as good in the Barling and in an old Yves St. Claude. It does not do too well in a real cheap pipe (made in Italy is the only marking) that has been rather ruthlessly smoked.

| So what, I thought, could frogs possibly know about tobacco. If Frog Morton is typical then they must know something. Though this is only the third English blend that I've tried, I still feel like I can say with great confidence this stuff is AMAZING! When you open the tin, you are met with a soft oiley-looking ribbon with an absolutely wonderful aroma. When you light it up, the smoke is like velvet. It burns well, it's cool, it has no tongue bite, amazing flavor... what more can you ask for?
The smoke in this does seem almost too cool which makes me wonder if perhaps one of its secrets is a little menthol in the casing. Anyway, my plan is to always have at least one tin of this around. It may not be easy being green, but this stuff sure makes it worthwhile.

| I( feel like the pariah here. I just don't get the fascination with FM. I have tried it several times and find it monochromatic and (ducking) quite boring. Yes, it is a fair latakia blend but there are so many others out there that are superior to this. Every time I smoked this I found my tongue would become numb. Could it be a chemical reaction to a different body chemistry? Sure. Will I buy any more of this? Nope.

| McClelland Frog Morton
An exceptionally dark, rich and full Latakia mixture designed for those who desires really satisfying Latakia flavor but want a tobacco soft enough to smoke any time of day. It took Frog Morton four years to perfect this unique blend designed for smoking in quiet serenity, and he considers it to be his proudest achievement.
Mostly Dark tobaccos with some Medium colored tobaccos , Strong Latakia Scent, with a background of Virginias, rough cut and perfect moisture level.
Packed Easily in my Italian Bent Apple, Lit easy with a Rich aroma, and tamped down nicely, light grey ash. Had to relight once or twice to keep lit.
I was surprised by this tobacco, not that it was great, but rather that it had a sweet taste on the tongue, it was smoky and sweet all at the smae time, my wife said it is strong but not entirely unpleasent, Reminded her a little bit of a campfire. This is the best i have had as of yet and will be in my regular rotation from here on out.
I give it a 5 out of 5 Superior!!

| This is one of my favorite blends it smokes cool for me and has a wonderful taste. I can't smoke it all the time but every other day is great. It is a great transitional smoke from Aromatic! If you have not tried this you ought to.

| Froggie is popular with the latakia crowd because it is almost biteless and subdued in its palate sensory projection.
If you eat a plate of straight latakia, you might get more in your system than what Froggie delivers in a pipe. But as for me, I'll pass on this sweetened overcooked latakia stew.

| Although Frog Morton seems to be fully disected in the previous reviews, I thought I'd put in my two cents worth. First, my love of Frog Morton on the Town was the prompt in the purchase of Frog Morton.
The blend was simply delicious. Slightly milder (and less body) than "the town". As a fairly new pipe smoker, I really appreciated both the coolness and quantity of the smoke. I just love a tobacco that produces heavy smoke. The flavor was mild yet satisfing. Can't place the casing (nor can I on "the town"). Both have just enough of something sweet.
In a nutshell, Frog Morton has probably become my all day smoke. I enjoyed it very much. I'll keep some "Frog Morton on the Town" and "Renaissance" around when I'm looking for a little more body. Also recently purchased some "Squadron Leader" that I've yet to try. Stay tuned.

| Frog Morton is a good choice for the smoker just starting with English blends because it just can't seem to bite, is nice and mild, has a bit of sweetness to it. I suspect most smokers won't stay with it in the long run, though, as they find blends with more interesting flavors and complexity. I have never been able to get this stuff to dry out, so even though it never bites, it is always goopy and prone to gurgle. This blend is also so mild that I often smoke a bowl and think OK, that was good, now I want to smoke some pipe tobacco. There may not even be any nicotine in this stuff, I don't know. In summary, good as a first English, but not any kind of benchmark.

| I'll admit my bias towards "the Frog" straightaway: this is one of my all-time favorites! For those who don't know, the Frog is a "hybrid" blend: you can't call it an English, nor can you call it an aromatic. It has a full taste, but is not harsh and never bites. It is very moist out of the can: let it sit open for a few days before smoking.
Perhaps it's my sentimentality, but this was the very first premium tobacco I ever smoked. Prior to the Frog, I smoked the drug store varieties (sad but true). Whenever I am in an enclosed public space, I smoke the Frog, non-smokers seem to like it. After sampling many different premium blends, I still keep coming back to the Frog.
For those unfamiliar with the McClelland brand, there is something of an urban legand circulating amongst the pipe community: that ketchup and/or vinegar is somehow involved in the manufacture. When you initially open a can of any of their tinned blends, the faint (but distinct) odor of ketchup can be detected. I live in St. Louis (McC is located in Kansas City), perhaps I'll pay a visit to finally put the debate to rest!

| One of the beauties of Frog Morton is it's simplicity. You can really taste the "nuttiness" of the Latakia and, as others have stated, it's darned-near impossible to get this stuff to bite.
Moisture was not a problem for me (as was for others reviewing above), and the understated nature of the flavor of this blend is somehow comforting.
I'd compare Frog Morton to certain women I know. It's not the long-legged, wild blonde in the red Porsche. It's more like the sweet, demure young lady in your Sunday school class. Sometimes you just appreciate the simple things more.

| Appearance: Very dark leaf throughout, with little variation from dark brown to almost dead black. Looks like Black Cavendish and Latakia, nothing else. Right from the can, it was more moist than I like. It showed no tendency to dry out in the air.
Aroma: Very smoky and somewhat sweet. I could not determine what aroma what present, but it is definitely an aromatic crossover.
Packing: Best done with a light touch, or it will not burn.
Lighting: Took flame well enough when packed properly, nohing unusual.
Initial flavor: Just like the aroma, the Latakia predominates, with a sweet background. Because of the flavoring, I don?t taste any Virginia or Turkish.
Mid-bowl: The flavor does not vary as I progress hrough the bowl. Monochromatic is one word word for it, BORING is another. It does smoke dry and cool, though.
Finish: Still boring, leaves a dry ash but also leaves its aoma in the pipe.
Summary: If you are looking for a crossover, then it would be worth a try. The quality is there, but it is just not my style.

| Ahh the Frog. Oft lauded and disparaged, this is a whose reputation preceeds itself. As a McClelland blend it is decidedly lacking in that unusual aroma known as the "ketchup" smell so often found in their tins.
Does anyone really know what that smell is?
That aside this is a truly dark blend. There is probably only 10-20% lighter tobacco in the tin. The tin aroma is of much latakia, little or no virginia, and the possibility of some light casing. It is also a very moist blend. Some prefer to dry it out. I myself like a wetter blend than others so I just pack it a little more losely.
The taste upon lighting is one of a large yet somehow medium flavoured latakia. The smoke is copious yet as one other reviewer noted it is also a smoke of little body.
As you work through the bowl, the taste and aroma are fairly consistent and uncluttered. There is a light flavour that is reminiscent of chocolate here, but just barely. The ash is clean in the end.
This is a blend that you do not have to think about, just enjoy and puff away. There is no bite at all, it is one of the coolest smokes I have seen. A bit monochromatic for some, but a joy for latakia lovers and those seeking an uncompromising smoke. Highly recomended

| Frog Morton is very one demensional it SCREAMS LATAKIA. For a latakia lover this isn't a bad thing. Because it doesn't have much complexity to it, it makes a great afternoon, mow the yard, kind of smoke. This isn't a tobacco for your heavy contemplating at the end of the day. A great SIMPLE latakia smoke, which isn't all that easy to find.

| Most would agree 965 is the current standard by which English blends are measured. Frog Morton, then, is the first step in an appreciation of 965 for those long confined to the aisles of WalMart and the Sisyphean task of continually besmirching pipes with BananaFudgeMangoCherry aromatic blends. At the same time both smokey and sweet, it is a wonderful transition from a summer spent smoking sweet Virginias to colder months that call for Latakia. Its entirely bite-free nature makes it a wonderful smoke for the beginner, and, while not as nuanced as some blends, the returning veteran can always find something delightful upon lighting up. Smooth, mild, mellow, and entirely uncomplicated.

| I would have to generally agree with most of the reviews listed here for Frog Morton. It is an extremely smooth and light English blend with hardly any tendency towards bite. However, for my taste, it is too mild. I do not mean mild in taste, but I do mean mild in sensory perception. I can taste the ingredients, but I can't feel the smoke in my mouth. It is like biting into a steak that feels like a marshmallow. It is like eating without the need to chew. It appears to be completely nicotine free if that is possible. My tin was fairly dry, but it still took many relights to reach the bottom of the bowl. All that being said, I can see where this would be perfect for the first time trial of an English blend, or for one attempting to switch from aromatics to non aromatics.. It won't knock you out, but it will give you the beginning of the taste of an English mixture. It would come in handy if one desired to smoke after and while having tongue bite. I do feel that once one becomes accustomed to a more stout English mixture, one would not find this as satisfying or fulfilling in comparison.

Tin Aroma: dusky, but with sweet overtones.
Physical Characteristics: a fine ribbon cut of mostly oily black pieces, with a ribbon of something slightly lighter, here and there. Packs easily. VERY moist. I let it sit opened for several hours before even attempting to smoke it, and have since found that opening the tin upon purchase and then going back in a week or so to smoke it yields the best results for me.
First Light: Yum. This is a good mellow English blend, in the best sense of the word. Strong Latakia flavor, but not overpowering. The Virginias are in evidence, but sublimated to the Latakia and Orientals, so no complaints from me. I will definately be smoking a good bit of this in the future.
Notes: Like a good virginia, and unlike a lot of English blends, the flavor at the bottom of the bowl is the real treat here. The flavor during the last third of the bowl is bursting with duskiness, and is as smooth and thick as a good single malt. The first two thirds of the bowl are extremely pleasant as well, sweet and with a decidely 'earthy', smoky flavor, the flavor that draws me back to 'English' blends over and over again. A bit lighter in texture than it's cousin, Frog Morton on the Town, and the two of them, alternated bowl for bowl, provide me with a full day of english smoking pleasure. I can see recommending this blend to aromatic smokers who are interested in sampling a good english blend. There is the faintest hint of a topping of some kind, though for the life of me, I can't pin down exactly what it is.

| I saw this a couple years back at a tobacconist and thought, isn't that a cute can - the frog in a smoking jacket, vest, and bow time smoking.
I just had to get some. A couple tins later, and the tin is still cute. The tobacco in the can is an entirely different matter. I usually pour the contents out on wax paper to sit overnight to help remove some of the moisture content - as I do with all the McClelland tinned blends I buy. This seems to give it a fairly smokable state. Then I return it to the tin. I returned to this tin, opened 12/00 after not having a bowl of it since opening it then. In the tin, it is predominantly black with some dark and light brown strips for highlights - a short cavendish cut. The aroma is predominantly Latakia with a hint of sweetness - oh yeah, and the distinctive tinned McClelland Worchestershire/Ketchup smell.
It packs well, and takes to match quickly. I like this because it is predictable - sweet, smoky, Latakia. There are also the underlying hints of Virginias throughout. It has the flavors of a fuller bodied Latakia blend, but has none of the heaviness. It is light and effervescent - very enjoyable. Some have said that it is cased, if so, it doesn't give that appearance to me. Yes, it has that nutty sweet flavor, but it is just well aged unsweetened brown Cavendish, Virginia and Latakia. You can tell this has been aged for a bit to get the smooth, rounded flavors that flow together so well on the palate. For some reason, it is also not as offensive as some Latakia blends can be to the bystander. This is wonderful middle of the road Latakia blend, it makes one feel comfortable.

| This was one of my very first latakia/VA blends, and I'm glad that it was. Its flavor is very nice, very rich, and one that I can definately see turning the aromatic smoker onto more rich, delicate mixtures of finer tobaccos. As one pops the top, the delicious aroma almost fills the room. I find no hint of the infamous "McClelland's Stench" about this blend, and thats quite a blessing. However, like most every other McC blend in the universe, it is perpetually moist. One might like to leave the tin open for about an hour before dipping in to fill a pipe, but honestly, I love this stuff so much that the extra moisture doesn't bother me at all. The packing is nice and easy because of the small cuts of tobacco. As flame hits the top, a wonderful flavor imparts itself to the user, and because of the moisture, generally manages to extinguish itself within a minute. This is just as well, so I tamp and relight. Again, this is a very -very- moist tobacco. Relights are frequent at the top of the bowl, but as you finish the first 3rd, become almost nonexistant. This is a fairly one-dimensional smoke, but it is a wonderful flavored one-dimensional smoke. The richness of the latakia and is well managed by the snappy sweetness of virginia, and somehow, this blend smokes very COOL. I honestly have no idea how they manage, but the smoke's temperature seems almost cold to the tongue, either way, its definately interesting. The flavor stays constant down the bowl, but never loses its charm. I heartily recommend this tobacco to all pipesmokers to try at least once. Not everyone will like it, of course, but I find it a delightful smoke for all times of the day. Oh yeah, and it has a Frog smoking on the front.

| When I made the big switch from Cigars to Pipes in early 97, this tobacco was my 'holy grail'. Though I've probably only smoked it once or twice in the last two years, it will always have a special place in my heart and there will always be a tin in my cellar - hell, I could probably keep an open tin in the cellar as this stuff stays moist forever.
I digress, the blend itself is another English/Aromatic hybrid. It has a wonderful tin aroma which translates well into the taste of the tobacco itself. The Frog, as it is affectionatley called by at least one other person , is a very smooth, mild and fragrant tasting blend. The latakia is not domineering as it often is in english blends and the casing (some sort of alcohol I'd imagine) is mysterious and intriguing. Though I have found many more enjoyable and complicated blends since first smoking the Frog, I am impressed with the burning qualities of this tobacco. It burns very cool, it's very mellow and rather enjoyable. It's not terribly complicated but that adds to it's charm somehow. It's a great tobacco for the english smoker who wants something different, and a great tobacco for an aromatic smoker who's feeling adventurous. Over all a wonderful tobacco with a well deserved fanbase.

| This is clearly my favorite McClelland blend, and most likely my favorite English all-day smoke. Mellow and smooth, I find that I don't need to be careful at all with this blend; it is among the most tongue-bite-free tobaccos I've ever tried. On opening the tin, the odor is clearly that of a full English blend: *I* like it, but some may not. The tobacco is moist-looking and dark black, with a small percentage of lighter brown flecks here and there. It packs well and lights easily, despite the apparently high level of moisture. I choose a 1/2 bent Peterson with a P-lip for the first test of this blend, a pipe that works well for me with Latakia mixes in general. The first third of the bowl is very enjoyable; the Latakia is very strong but not overwhelming, and the smoke is totally cool, thick, and mellow. The other tobacco present is not totally drowned out, but still plays only a secondary role to that of the nutty, rich Latakia. Be warned, however, that non-smokers in the room may not appreciate the strong Latakia smell! In the second third, the high moisture catches up with me a bit, and I need to use a pipe cleaner in the stem once or twice. The same rich, cool smoke is there, however, and the flavor is mild but complex, as with the first third. In the last third, the moisture remains present, and the very bottom of the bowl is tough to keep lit because of it. I really want to, though! The smoke is just as cool and flavorful right to the bottom. I probably smoke more of this blend than any other. If you enjoy a rich, flavorful, yet cool English blend, this is the one for you. The only complaint I have is with the moisture, and that may be a problem only with this particular pipe. Regardless, the taste makes fighting to the very bottom of the bowl worth it. UPDATE: I've found that, if I leave the tin open for several weeks, the moisture problems gradually improve a great deal. The pipe selection also seems to have an effect; the Peterson gurgled worse than several of my other pipes.

This tobacco seems to be a latakia/aromatic hybrid. It definitely has latakia, and a fair bit of it at that, and also seems to have a light casing (chocolate?). The result is an easy-smoking crossover blend that will likely appeal to both hardcore english smokers and aromatic fans alike.
It is a slow, cool smoker, although there is a tendency to wetness towards the bottom of the bowl (probably due to the casing), making this perfect for a meerschaum or calabash, and indeed it responds very well to such treatment. I've smoked it in my Peterson system and Falcon with poor results, but then I rarely get good results from any "system" pipe.
The taste is smoky but seems to lack that latakia nuttiness that is present in so many other english blends, possibly because this tobacco seems to be less "stemmy" than other latakia blends, although in compensation this blend has a more forward chocolatey flavor than most Cyprian latakia blends, whether this is because of the casing I can't tell.
The room aroma is medium strength, and from observer's reports it seems that the aroma is similar to the taste. At any rate, it doesn't seem to raise many objections.

| A perfect cross-over blend for those looking to begin enjoying Latakia. The Latakia is married with an aromatic flavoring to arrive at a pleasant mix of smokey and sweet. Providing very little bite, this is a good all-day smoke.
