| Oh yes, pipers, this is by far an incredible blend. The tin I smoke from has exactly a year on it, and the taste has gotten sweeter, spicier, and a tad more enjoyable than the newer tins I've smoked up until this point. The perique is consistently flavorful from top to bottom. An absolute classic delight. Wish the bowl would never end.

| There is a reason why this tobacco is reviewed so often and reviewed with such praise. Escudo may be the king of the Vapers. I think the key as Red stated before me, is balence. A little sweet, a little spicy and no dominate player. Since there isn't much to add, I would just like to point out that after reviewing the A&C production side by side with the Stokkebye, blender to blender, the taste remains the same. Often attempted in the tobacco world but seldom happens. If I could note one very slight difference, the A&C was a touch sweeter, but that was most likely due to the age on the tin. Highly Recommended!

| Hey fellers, Red here. If you are looking for a classically blended Va/Per you won't go wrong trying out a 50g tin of Escudo Navy De Luxe. Unlike most things on our heathen planet, it's famous for a reason. And that reason is....Balance. Naturally sweet North Carolina Virginias moderated, cooled, and subtly 'sexed up' by a well executed percentage of spicy Perique. An excellent introduction Va/Per and a daily smoke the world over. Bravo.
4 Stars.

| I tried the bulk version first, which was horrible. Just another proof that bulk versions are not always the same tobacco...
The tinned version was pretty good, nice and spicy. I enjoyed it.

| Absolutely delicious! Moisture is perfect. One and a half coins are the perfect size for a bowl. I take the whole coin and roll it over the half coin, like a scroll or a burrito. It fits right in the pipe. Then I tamp and light. This blend is bursting with flavor. Sweet, exotic, aluring, with a hint of pepper. I could smoke this all day.

| As a big Va/Per fan, I have been dying to try this blend for a long time. Davidoff's Flake Medallions is my favorite blend, and I heard so much about this that I really wanted to give it a go.
And finally, here we are.
"A choice & unique blend, scientifically manufactured"
For some reason, that brought up images of Resident Evil. Anyway, onto the tobacco.
Packaged just how I expected it to be. Flakes are very nice, moisture is perfect, and they are easy to handle. I always rub out my flakes these days, for me it just tends to improve the flavor and burning qualities.
Packed easily, and took to a flame well. Light, tamp, light and you're off to Va/Per heaven, basically.
This stuff just explodes with flavor, and God I love it. The Perique in it is more dominant than in Flake Medallions, which is what I really wanted, anyway. The Virginia's are smooth, and the Perique in it is very nicely executed. Nice and peppery, and quite addicting!
It smokes cool and slow, and burns all the way to the very end with little to no effort. Taste does not go bad near the end. It actually develops really nicely mid bowl. Peppery, yet smooth, with just the right amount of nicotine.
While I'm not sure if I like it more than Flake Medallions, it is just an extremely high quality tobacco which tastes fantastic.

| I am not sure if this is my favorite VaPer, but I do really like it. My only complaint is that it has been a bit dry for my liking. Not the highest quality tobacco on the market, but there is a reason that so many people buy it.

| 6-24-10: I finally had a chance to try this blend last night. It seems to be one of the all time greats, so I had to give it a go. I was a little apprehensive b/c I tend to have a bad reaction to blends with perique. The perique in this blend however did not bother me at all.
I fully rubbed out Navy Deluxe. It lights easier than most tobaccos. It truly did burn down to a fine white ash. I had no trouble smoking it all the way to the bottom.
This blend got a little hot for me at first, but it cooled down after I took it a little easier. The taste was very natural. Not overly sharp as I find some virginias to be. The somoke did not have a tremendous amount of flavor. I smoked this in a Peterson XL02. At the very end of this larger bowl, the nicotine hit me a little harder than I like, but I tend to stick with very mild (in the nicotine dept.) tobaccos.
Overall, I do recommend this blend. Especially if you are not crazy about perique, but would like to gain some more experience with it. I will not be adding this to my rotation, but it is certainly a quality smoke.

| For me this is one of the easiest flakes to prepare and smoke, moisture from the tin is perfect. I smoke either fully rubbed out or just fold / crush a coin and good to go. Smokes very cool , very well behaved. Notes of figs and raisins- a little spice. I find this in the milder, mid - range of VP's with SG St. James flake being more to the extreme in terms of spice, and having PS Luxury bulls eye flake at the other end- only a little spice.. So for me this is the most balanced VP I have had so far. I consider a all day smoke. As I travel often for work this is also perfect as tin keeps moisture correct- even in hot climates, easy to prepare , pack and smoke on the run.

| This has become my favorite of the moment. For a tobacco to remain a favorite for more then 2 months is saying something. I usually can not tolerate virginias. This, however, doesn't cause any damage, more so, I can really enjoy the tobacco flovors in the mix. I didn't know I like perique until I tried this.
I don't have the discerning palette of some of the connoisseurs on this site. It tastes great. I simple fold the coins into the bowl. It stays lit. It may be just about the perfect tobacco.
I'm looking for 5 pound tins. I guess I like it.

| Escudo Navy Delux, a wonderful cake- or pressed-tobacco, cut from cigar-like rolls, presents a delicious (almost edible!) golden red spun coin wafer, that can be folded directly into a pipe - I use two such wafers for a Dunhill Group 4 black shell billiard 4112# - or, if preferred, teased or cut apart on the provided cicular cardboard insert for perhaps easier pipe loading, is really one of my all time favorite Virginia / Perique blends.
Either way it packs well, smokes slowly, without needing a preliminary dry, and the sweetness of the Virginias, grown in NC and VA, provides for, IMOH, one of the most satisfying smokes ever. The best Va/Per blend in current production. Not to be missed.
Something I noticed about these pressed or Flake Va/Per tobaccos is that they smoke better in smaller pipes. I do flake tobaccos in billiards and chimneys, rather then Dublins, Apples etc. There is such a thing as a "Flake Pipe", and these things, as I recall, are rather small pipes of traditional forms. Seems like pressed or flaked tobaccos burn hotter and wetter if not tamped down to lower the burning temperature. In any event, the best is for the last when you get down to the bottoms of the bowl and just sip the smoke ever so slightly, then the true flavors REALLY come through. Does any else see it this way?
Having gone through some cans now, I can say that I will definitely be stocking up on more for the basement. Too bad its not available in bulk, but someone said on one of these threads, don't remember which, that Peter Stokkebye Bulk Luxury Navy Flake, which is available in bulk, is pretty damn close to Escudo. Does anyone out there think this is so?
This tobacco blend has been in continuous production since 1870 and I can see why!!

| I've just finished a tin of this tobacco and I thought I might share my impressions.
It's beautiful packaged unwrapped reveals remarkably thin cut coins that are just gorgeous. I love this kind of cut anyway, also being partial to pressed flake tobacco. Both are convenient to carry around and they look sharp.
The mix of perique here is spot on, lending itself a nice color to the coin as well as filling the tin with fig notes and other dried dark fruits.
The coins are easy to rub out and fill up. I didn't find the tobacco prone to burn too hot or bite, nor did it leave behind much dottle. It's really a consistent smoke, from top to bottom.
I think the high opinion of Escudo Navy Deluxe can be found in the taste. It's rich without overreaching itself. It's sweet enough for those moments that deserve a sweet smoke, but it's so pleasant and subtle that it can be smoked in every day-part like any sturdy Virginian.
I would recommend this tobacco to any smoker, whether they be novice, amateur or expert. But don't take my word for it. This is so highly recommended by so many smoker's; trust your fellows, I say!

| I just tried this cake tobacco for the first time. When I opened the tin I loved the smell. Very rich and fruity! Easy to load and light, in fact it stayed lit quite nicely. Was able to get large amounts rich smoke that smelled pleasant that tasted fantastic. It wasn't too heavy or spicy. Sweet, creamy, delicious!! Spectacular smoke!!
I got a small bit of tongue bite, but that might have been from my heavy draws from excitement.
Since I have smoked this two more times, it is quickly becoming my favorite tobacco...
Even after trying Davidoff's Flake Medallions these are still my favorite. I have a few tins stored up....

| I have been regulated to smoking only Virginia Flakes in the house when me lady is home. When she isn't home, I will smoke a cat turd if that is my fancy. That said; Escudo is the only perique blend, that I like, that I can slip by her with a well placed non-truth. She hates the smell of perique and I love the taste of it. Its a match made in heaven. As for this lovely blend, it is the benchmark of a fine Vapor. Upon opening a new tin, as for all blends in my rotation, I transfer tobacco to A mason jar because tobacco ages better at a moistness that I do not like to smoke it at. I will dry a bowls worth of Escudo for 15 minutes before rubbing out and loading. A great tobacco. Earlier descriptions on this page have covered anything else you need to know.

| escudo old time tobacco continues at it's best. This was a favorite of sasieni. Time travel comes to my mind every time I rub it out and smoke it. Funny its about the only virginia blend I can smoke due to the heat, I am a furious puffer, but I due love the fact that it is still made the old way. I like perique tobacco and I like the fact that it also is soaked in plum juice!

| I was in Denver this week on business and stopped at Edward's Pipe Shop on South Broadway. What a great shop with a fine selection of tined tobaccos. I had a nice visit with the lady behind the counter, the wife of the husband/wife team that own the store. It gave one hope as we visited about the taxes and government policies killing shops like this. The hope came in the people's revolt that's coming (even in a liberal Mecca like Denver)that will kick the crap out of the nanny state. Now that's hope & change we can believe in! But I digress. I spotted a tin of Escudo and thought I would give this great old spun Virginia/Perique a try once again. It's been years since I last smoked it, but is as good as I remember. It's a very tasty VA/PER blend. The balance between the two is wonderful. I let it dry slightly, rubbed it lightly and fired it up in a #4 size Astley Rhodesian. It never bites or burns hot, no matter how hard I puff. It is complex in its interplay between the sweetness of VA and the spice of Perique. For VA/PER lovers, this one is a must.

| What else can be said about this wondrous blend. This is one of the best VA/Pers out there. The disc's are a thing to behold and smell almost bread-like. I usually just fold a couple and stuff them in the pipe. It lights quite easily and burns nicely right down the bowl. There is a good dose of perique to be had here so newbies to VA/Per's might want to start out with something with a little less in it. For me, the level of perique is pure heaven and makes sweet music with the quality virginias. A sublime smoke that everyone should try at least once. 4 solid stars.
