EMP has a really good taste, and yes you can smoke it in EARLY morning without any problems (it leaves no side-effects on sensitive stomachs). It has a good smell ( I have washed the tin with water and soap about two months ago and it still has a pleasant smell!).

Haven't try too many kinds of pipe tobacco yet, so my evaluation might be due to lack of choices.

Many say that absence makes the heart grow fonder. Since I am reviewing this while smoking what little EMP I have left, I guess it could taint my review. I have always loved the Dunhill blends, especially EMP. It leads with wonderful Orientals with the Virginia's and Latakia playing great supporting roles. EMP has a subtle sweetness with a "leathery, toasty" taste. I find Red Rapparee as my new "go to" in this category. EMP will sadly be missed. Like many folks, I have sent a note of protest to BAT. Hopefully they will sell the blend to another manufacturer.

I am not in the "English" stuff, but this is tolerable to me. It is realy "light" for an early pipe as its name states. I can sense that is a true quality tobacco but only for the "English tobacco" lovers. Perhaps my rating is prejudiced while I smoke exclusively aromatics and this is the reason that I have no right to critise its strange aroma.

Wow! With 195 reviews already posted, I doubt another one is going to sway anybody in either direction, but this is a tobacco I have to comment on. Perfectly named, Early Morning Pipe washes across the tongue with an immediate toasty, nutty flavor. Sweet and complex the first third of the bowl, it develops some spice as it progresses. The balance is amazing: all of the elements work together at once, yet one can change the character of the smoke by changing the draw. My bowl started very cool, but it will burn hot and harsh if pulled too strongly upon. Still, there is definitely room to play in this blend. Fun to smoke, and tasty as hell.

Whoa, whoa...hang on. Just hang on for a minute. I have to respond to all the good reviews of this blend. This tobacco is just downright wierd. Wierd taste. Wierd room note. Too expensive. And call me half-committed to pipesmoking, but the last thing I really want to do is smoke a pipe early in the morning. This was definitely a let down.

EMP is a wonderful light Balkan. It smells like leather in the tin and is the perfect combination of Bright and Red Virginia tobacco with Orientals and Latakia. I would classify it as a Balkan rather than an English tobacco as the Orientals are emphasized over the Latakia. I enjoy stronger Balkan and English blends, but eventually always come back to EMP and am never disappointed. I hope this Dunhill blend is reinstated in America soon.

Another classic Dunhill blend that has disapeared!! EMP is one of my all time favorites. I started smokit EMP about 20 years ago. I love full streanghth tobacos and was a little taken aback when I saw the medium-miled rating. This is the blend that made me quit smoking cigarettes and opened the door to the joy of pipe smoking. There is nothing out there even close to this blend INHO.

Please, Please, PLEASE join me and contact British American Tobaco (BAT) and demand that they either manufacture all of Dunhill Pipe Tobaccos or sell the rights to someone who will. It is insanity to let this and other Dunhill pipe tobacco blends die out. Shame on you BAT!!!!

Not a lightweight, but not a knockout either. I consider EMP more than a light English because it has good strength and enough complexity to keep it very interesting. In fact, while most tobaccos seem to get stronger and a bit harsher as they burn down, EMP seems to get richer and toastier. I typically don't like a lot of that Oriental tang in my smoke, but this one is so well balanced that it works beautifully.

First tried it in a meer and was completely unimpressed. The Orientals came through too strongly for my tastes. I more prefer smoky Latakia flavors. But in my broken-in Nording freehand it shines! The tang is mellowed, the flavors meld more smoothly, and the slight smokiness provides some lip-smacking goodness.

To me, this is a sipping tobacco. Unlike some English blends that require a bit more heat, this one responds well to some slow and gentle TLC. But why do I keep calling it English? By definition this is supposed to be a Balkan, I guess, due to its high Oriental content.

Looking forward to taste testing this as it ages. Ought to be mighty fine in a year or three...

Overall, this beccy burns evenly with no tongue bite. Sweetness is nice and not too overwhelming.

For me a great allday-smoke. Highly recommended for pipesmokers entering the world of english-blends for the first time. Since you won't get a heavy latakia-punch like other english-blends. Tobacco has perfect moisture. Burns excellent. The sidestream of this tobacco is wonderful. Gentle sweet. I don't know why, but everytime i smoke EMP the image of bacon and sweet honey comes into my mind.

*update* 9/24/2009 this stuff is getting better and better with every bowl i smoke. Fantastic. I enjoy it in the morning as much as i do enjoy it in the evening. Every puff reveals a different taste...sweet, oriental, mystic, subtle smokiness of latakia in the background. i like this blend...case closed.

People have called this monochromatic, and I can't really disagree - though the interplay between the orientals and virginias, while subtle, seems to me to be perfectly harmonious. This is a tobacco that has always lived in the nose for me -- not sure if that makes any sense -- but the sidestream smoke is just delicious, sort of a naturally sweet, mild toasty natural Virginia goodness (always reminded me a bit of burnt marshamallows) coupled with an Oriental pungency that I never seem to tire of. There are just enough other hints of flavor from the other tobaccos to keep things interesting. I can be a bit bitey if smoked too quickly. I preferred the bulk Orlik to the Murray's in this one -- but have only sampled one tin of Murray's, so perhaps it wasn't a representative sample.

It may well be that absense makes the heart grow fonder. Hopefully rumors are true, and I'll have an opportunity to test this tobacco again later in the year.

This is a great eye-opener, but works all through the day as well. Mild and sweet, somewhat astringent. Can be complex if you want it to be, but equally good for casual puffing. Like most (all?) Dunhill's it's potent in nicotine and flavour. Still, of the Dunhill range it's on the lower end of the scale. Very good stuff.

Very decent light English blend. If I had to stick with only one Dunhill English blend it woul be My Mix 965, but this one is also worth in the bowl of my pipe when I am in the mood for a lighter version of it. The problem is that recently I tend to preffer zestier and tastier fuller latkia blends. I would recommend this though to any aromatic or new pipe smoker that wants to start indulging into the journey of fine English blends. No, do not start with Night Cap. Cheers.

Let me put my bias out in the open and upfront: If a blend is going to contain latakia, it must either contain enough to drive the blend OR the other tobaccos must be flavorful enough to pick up the slack. Otherwise, what you have is a bland, dull tobacco blend. Such is the case here. I realize this is supposed to be light and mild, as a "first smoke of the day" but this blend would put me back to sleep. I find little going on here, other than a possible palate cleansing to separate two bowls of zestier tobacco blends. This was a Murray's era tin, by the way.

Ok, another bias - I'm no huge fan of Dunhill tobaccos as a rule. If they came back only with Elizabethan and 965, I would not miss the others at all. There's nothing really wrong with them but there's not much to recommend them, either. This one appears an afterthought - as though they decided they simply HAD to offset the heaviness of Nightcap (another uninspiring blend) with something wimpy and bland. There's red virginia in here??? They covered it up nicely, but how and with what?? Nothing asserts itself here.

Finally, some objectivity! My biases aren't necessarily yours. A lot of people like this and if you enjoy light, mild balkan blends, you should definitely give this a spin. Hopefully you like it more than I did. I'm packaging up what's left of my tin and shipping it off to a friend who enjoys it.

(Orlik) Not much to add here... Latakia is present (no more then 10%, although still not sure if Syrian or Cyprian kind) and virginias must be good quality. However, this blend is dominated by the orientals (which are of a balanced variety between spicy and tangy - not monotonous at all).

I'm still to smoke it on the cold days, but so far it's a great balkan/oriental smoke under the hot sun.

(some british online stores refer Erinmore Balkan Mixture as a good replacement for EMP... I disagree. Erinmore BM is much fuller and spicier. Although I find EBM a great blend, it is not a close match to EMP)

Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe is my favorite pipe tobacco and IT IS RETURNING---BUT NOT IN AUGUST,2009 as I had been told earlier; There is legal rangling between B.A.T and C.A.O.(i.e., how much is C.A.O. going to pay R.J.R. Reynolds for using the Dunhill Name)--which will delay the re-introduction for some months. C.A.O hopes to start before the end of the year.Unfortunately, in my opinion, the E.M.P. matches don't match very well-Cornel and Diehle's GOOD MORNING-is only 80 % of E.M.P. In my approx 2 year quest to find a substitute for E.M.P., I found several blends that were ALMOST as good, but NEVER EQUAL-- to E.M.P. They are the 3 excellent Rattrays blends-Reserve #7, Red Raparree, and Professional mixture;the King Charles mixture by Germain is excellent; McCleland mixture #1 is very good and close to E.M.P. with a tad less flavor; and at a distance from these, are Skiff and Squadron Leader. THE GREAT NEWS IS--IT IS BACK And it will be made by Orlik, who made it for some years after Murray quit. The bad news is we will have to wait some more time. I will update this if/when new info is available. Note--I recently tried McClelland #925--which is advertised as a Dunhill 965 replacement--while in fact it is much closer to E.M.P. In my opinion, 925 is currently the CLOSEST approximation to E.M.P. extant. UPDATE: I recently tried Cornel and Diehl's Star of the East--this is another tobacco that stongly resembles E.M.P.--a light english with good flavor. But still not as good.

EMP has been around for a long time and has changed several times, according to who is making it for Dunhill. The original was pure ambrosia; later iterations varied. The best of it is as fine a mild or light English as there is, it is still near the top of my list. The sweet aged Virginias are round and mellow. The orientals are lightly spiced and fragrant. There is an unknown ( to me at least) that adds a wine-like quality that lingers on the pallet for some time. I understand it has become hard ( if not impossible) to find in some areas. If you can't find it or are not happy with the present form of it, try the Altadis matching substitute. It is not bad.

The tin I purchased is marked Made in UK. Upon opening it, a pungy aroma of iodine, sea salt, mint, then musty earth, smoke, tar and leather. Instant recollection of an Islay malt. An aquired taste perhaps, but I aquired it by spending many hours in the company of 16 year old Lagavulin. Smoking it produces more subtle aromas in the same notes. Pleasant for the smoker, but maybe it won't win accolades from the second hand smokers in the room (unless they happen to be scotch aficionados). Perfect humidity for a cool smoke. Not at all what I expected from an 'early morning' blend. I have to agree with the reviewer who thought of it as an 'end of a long night'. Great smoke nonetheless.

Update: I bought two more tins, but did not get the same pleasure smoking them. They were noticeably drier and even re- humidifying them did not restore the flavor. Seems a bit of a lottery, so I am downgrading this to two stars from four.

*This is for the post-2004 version* This tobacco will forever remind me of the morning after I stayed on a traincar in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was the most comfortable hotel room I ever stayed in; even if it was a small cramped space, it made you feel closer to the people around you. After a good night's sleep, I stepped out of the traincar early the next morning and lit up this tobacco in a meerschaum pipe. (EDIT: I was told that it was an English blend, but have recently learned there is no Latakia: this is a Balkan blend. No wonder I loved it so much.). The room note is surprisingly tolerable compared to many English blends; most smell pretty naff after a few minutes, while this one smells nice. It has a lot of Orientals in it that give it a nice taste. I have had many English blends with great reviews, such as Penzance, Commonwealth, Pirate Kake, and Star Of The East, and this one has to be my favourite. The main reason is that this is such a great all day smoke. While Pirate Kake is a decent tobacco that should be smoked to enjoy the flavour, this one can be enjoyed and inhaled easily. Its consistant ability to give a great flavour in the morning after you wake up makes it one of my favourites.

By the way, does anyone know what the heck is happening with Dunhill? Is their stuff still available in the UK or the EU?

Being mine the review no. 170... I just add a couple of things.

First: the Orlik version just needed long seasoning. I'm smoking the second half of a tin bought a couple of years ago. I clearly remember I found EMP very flat smoking upon opening, and thinking what the hell was happening to the Dunhill line ... going completely lost; now it's round and has a medium tang and strength, which I just enjoy.

Second: EMP has quite little to do with first bowl in the early morning... it's an all-day english smoke. This is what I'm thinking now, as I did with the pre-Murray EMP.

I never had a chance to try Murray's EMP but I like the Dunhill version very much.

As always with my experience with Dunhill Tobaccos, opening the tin reveals well prepared, high quality tobacco with no stems to be found. A newly opened tin might have a slightly higher moisture content but it still packs and lights well even at first and as I smoke through a tin this balances out rather quickly without having to purposefully dry it.

Early Morning Pipe, as the name implies, is a good tobacco to start the day with as it is relatively mellow and mild compared to some other English tobaccos I have tried. It is flavorful with a slight tanginess such as you see in Dunhill's My Mixture 965 but not nearly as strong. It burns cool with no bite which is as you would expect with a non-flavored tobacco but again this is another good reason it has merits as a tobacco to start the day with. Even though it is on the milder side, it still packs enough of a punch to be satisfying on the nicotine side of things.

The room note is also as you would expect with an English tobacco in that it will probably only be appreciated by a smoker. That said, the room note is not as strong as seen with some other, more robust, English tobaccos.

EMP is one of my "go to" tobaccos, and I do not restrict it only to the early AM! It is a nice tobacco to switch in if you have been smoking an aromatic and want to go to something without any bite and also want to keep things on the mild side.

-----------------

Bottom line: An English on the mild side; no bite; still packs a good kick; a very pleasant smoke

Early Morning Pipe is a fine example of a light English that is well suited as a tasty smoke while reading the paper or having a cup of coffee. It's latakia is not overwhelming and so it makes for a decent, simple smoke in any weather and at any time.

One reviewer mentioned Samuel Gawith's Skiff as being in the same genre and I agree. I would rate Skiff a little higher, as it seems a little less bitter-although EMP was by no means unpleasently bitter.

Recently I purchased 2 oz of Early Morning Pipe-Dunhill Match from pipesandcigars.com This seems fairly close to the original-although I do not intend on breaking the seal on my last tin of Murray's vintage to experiment with it quite yet. I will upate this review with continued smoking of the substitute and of the original when I can get my hands on more.

Early Morning Pipe is my go-to blend for early morning smokes. I have a morning ritual of a good breakfast, followed by a little Baily's Irish Cream in my coffee and some of Dunhill's EMP in my corncob. It has sustained me for almost a year now, and I have to say that although I can't get my tins anymore, the substitution-in-bulk offered by pipesandcigars.com is passingly similar. Enough to keep me in my morning ritual, anyway.

Early Morning Pipe presents as a very mild, smooth Oriental and Latakia blend. It smokes extremely cool with no tongue bite noted. The thing I like best about this tobacco is how it pairs with coffee...the flavors of the tobacco are subtle and soft, and the palate is not overwhelmed at the start of the day. The tin aroma is nice and crisp, suggestive of things to come. I always noted an earthy note in the smoke that I attribute to the Latakias, which are present without being too forward in the mouth and nose. The room note is everything a good pipe tobacco should be, not too strong but letting one know that a pipe and not another form of tobacco has been smoked. I highly recommend that anybody who finds a dusty old tin in the back of his local tobacconist's shop (since it's not made in tins anymore) crack this one open and smoke it post haste. Or, simply send it to me instead.

okay, i didn't want to throw it out, so i tried "saving it" by baking it at c. 80 C for 3 hours. most times, the effect is limited in time, but it proved a very fine idea with this one. just about every aspect of the aroma was enhanced, and i've found myself really enjoying the remaining 2/3 of the tin. the virginia has mellowed and deepened, the orientals shine, and the room aroma is a lot more intense!

i'll leave the 2 tins in my cellar to age for a couple years, as that will almost certainly make for an even better experience than the baked tin. as it is: upped to 4 stars.

original review, 04/09/2008:

this is the orlik version.

a very clean tasting, and a very mild blend, bordering on bland. it must indeed be for those who wake up very slowly, and it could be smoked while you're asleep. there's almost nothing in the taste to note, just some virginia sweetness, a little more oriental, and, let's be fair, a teeny amount of latakia.

nice quality, but boring. wonder how i'll get through my two tins. perhaps adding a dose of perique, some full virginia flake and a healthy amount of syrian latakia can do the trick. or perhaps i'll use it for ryo.

Ive smoked mostly Dunhill tobaccos for years. I think the folks at Orlik are trying their damnedest to successfully re-create the Dunhill recipes. I say this because, yes, I find the Orlik's satisfying. You would think finding a US distributor should be easier than nailing the recipes. In comparison with Pease's Embarcadero and Solomon's Presbyterian, Early Morning Pipe is my preference. So, to avoid a cyber lynching allow me to explain. Embarcadero and Presbyterian are great tobaccos that on any given day I would gladly purchase and smoke. I'm just partial to EMP's toasty Virginians, and its lively strength, particularly in the morning. Sweeter than Embarcadero and spicier than Presbyterian, EMP is perfect to me. DGT with Embarcadero is a great treat, but from pouch to briar and fire, Early Morning Pipe takes home the cup.

I may be fortunate in not having tried the English version of this esteemed tobacco, I have two unopened tins in my collection and one open tin of the EU rendition. I have been tempted to open a tin of the English, just to compare the two, but I live in dread that I may fall in love with a blend now gone.

So this review is based on the EU offering which is a light Latakia blend with a reasonable amount of flavour for an early morning smoke, I say reasonable as my taste still leans towards a more straight virginia for the first pipe, usually a Sam Gawith Golden Glow or Astley's 55 Elizabethen.

For the Latakia lover, who for whatever reason, has not had a long and loving afair with the real EMP, this may yet suffice to start the day before moving on to something like Squadron Leader. Alas, IMHO, this is just a mild Latakia blend, may pick up another tin in a few months time, wouldn't refuse a bowl if offered (assuming I didn't have any tobacco on me) but certainly not enough to write home about. Two Stars

UPDATE January 6th 2009

I have to upgrade this, even though no longer available here in England, due to the fact that IMHO, Sam Gawith's Skiff Mixture is about as close as you can get to EMP, and with the colder weather (it's about -4C right now) I tend to be smoking a lot more Latakia's and as I'm tending to start the day with Skiff, which I rated as 4 Stars, it seems only fair that due respect should be paid to EMP

A beautiful short ribbon of mixed colors with an occasional olive strand. Packs and burns very well, with but a little time needed to dry before smoking.

Among oriental-forward English blends EMP stands out as mild with a tangy and sometimes earthy core of musty orientals supported, although not consistently, by understated virginias. The finish, while tending towards the alkaline, is short and crisp. Blindly tasted, beyond the expected effects of tin age this reviewer noted no discernible difference between the recent Danish production (Orlik) and the older Irish production (Murray's).

EMP is a standard oriental-forward English which is dependable, predictable, and nothing special - this being, perhaps, its most charming quality.

While I can't find any strong fault with this baccy, I can't find anything with it to get excited about.

Came a little too dry, Packed and lit easily, but doesn't stay lit well. Taste seemed a little fruity to start out, went bland by the half way mark and got a little nippy close to the bottom with a slight bitterness creeping in. The Virginias were there until about half way down and then there was no obvious distinction of any particular tobacco.

My overall impression is of blandness. According to some of the glowing reviews below, maybe I had a bad batch but, I can't really recommend this above 2 stars.

I found this blend to be utterly flat and boring. The problem is that nothing here blends at all. There's no interplay of flavors, no point-counterpoint balance. It seems to be just a bunch of weed thrown together and sold in a pretty tin.

I'm not done with Dunhill yet, but I'll never buy another Dunhill blended in the EU. There's some UK still to be found in the odd tobacco shop in your nearest mid-sized town.

If this was the first of the kind I had tasted, I would have written a better review. It contains a good dose of nicotine. It has a honey, mild taste of Virginia, which is enriched with a good quality oriental. There is no way I can smoke it in the morning. Maybe late in the evening.

EMP is mild without being bland. The light hand with the latakia really lets you taste the other tobaccos that are in the mix. It is well suited for the first pipe of the day, but I also find it excellent for any time I don't want alot of nicotine or want my mouth to taste like a BBQ for the rest of the day/night. All throughout the bowl the taste is uniform without being unsatisfying. I like to take a large, full pipe of it on walks at night because it stays lit without a fuss and I can enjoy what I am doing without having to always play with my pipe. There is very little bite even though at times my puffing gets syncronized with my pace. The tobacco burns to a fine white ash and does require some tamping in order to keep a nice light. I like to smoke fuller English mixtures like British Woods, Renaissance, and Blackpoint. However when I want something more toned down I reach for EMP. As stated most eloquently by FiveRings, "The easiest Dunhill blend to smoke . EMP doesn't offend your senses, your mouth, or your mind . Very smooth Oriental and Latakia presence . Elegance and subtlety." EMP will stay in my cabinet for some time to come.

***UPDATE*** I recently picked up a new tin of EMP. The only thing that I need to change in my review is to echo previous comments about the nicotine content being markedly higher. Due to this I have to downgrade my recommendation from 4 stars to 3. I will only be smoking this in smaller bowls and on a full stomach.

****UPDATE**** I went back to EMP after a long absence. I have to say that the new stuff is definitely not as good as EMP of yesterday. It starts off OK, but then the tast and room note reminds me off strong cigarettes or, even worse, bad cigars. I have to downgrade this further to 2 stars, maybe even 1 1/2.

The change between old and new versions in most Dunhill blends is so drastic that my procedure in rating Dunhill tobaccos is the following:

When I tried only the old or the new version, I describe and rate it as I tasted it, making it clear which version I refer to.

When I tried both, I rate the new one, but in the comments I try to compare them. So the one star rating refers in this case to the new one.

Now the comments for both versions:

Murray: It was very good. Collect if you find.

Orlik: Low grade, almost disgusting. Avoid.

I had never tried this blend by Murray, only the current version. OK 4 tins purchased, 2 different sellers. My first tin upon opening was barely moist. I rolled a few pinches between my fingers onto a plate and let it sit 10 minutes before filling the bowl of a new Savinelli. Grabbed for the lighter, empty! After a 10 minute treasure hunt, I came back with a few matches. It only took one. I finished the whole bowl in one sitting. I think the flavor came out in the second half. Not hot, no bite, just very smooth. I was happy with it. I fininshed the tin in 4 or 5 days, smoking my normal blend in between. It was a touch mild and seemed perfect as an "Early Morning Pipe." I figured I would do just that, smoke the second tin as just a starter pipe of the day. It is not too light in the morning, just a little. This tin had the exact same characteristics as the first. When I got to the 3rd tin, purchased at the same location as the first 2, I was shocked how "WET" the tobac was! I immediately thought I had better order a 4th tin in case this one takes a while to dry out. I did just that. 5 or so day's, it was here. I opened it and found it in between the first 2 and the 3rd in moistness. They all smelled the same but wow, what a difference in moisture between them. It took me 40 minutes each time to dry enough to smoke, and several matches per smoke. That is my only gripe: inconsistancy. I think it is a mild tobac anyone could enjoy, the Orientals are light and never overpower Virginia's. I have tobaccos I like more, but this is a good starter for English style tobacco. It is much milder in taste with a pleasant room note - My kids hate the smell.....

Though I have little experience with Orientals, this blend is possibly my favorite of those I currently have 'in stock'. I will without doubt keep some quantity of this on hand regularly.

EMP is a cool-burning blend that I enjoy immensely. It has little bite when smoked at even a moderate pace, and has a nice nicotine level that is not overpowering, but not absent. The smoke is rich and smooth, and it is very easy to light and then keep lit. It burns to a fine ash, evenly and consistently.

The flavor is mildly sweet, but not aromatic, making it a nice change of pace from my usual straight VA and English blends. The light use of Orientals gives it a tasty, slightly peppery flavor that rolls off the tongue.

Whether you are used to Drug Store blends or high quality English blends, there is something for everyone to enjoy in this tobacco.

UPDATE: I apparently have a tin of EMP that dates back before Dunhill began using Orlik as their blender. By all accounts, the newer version (which says made in EU, not UK) is somewhat worse than the pre-Orlik version, perhaps 3 stars instead of 4.

EMP is a unique smoking experience as it contains all of the elements of what should be a strong blend, yet Murray's was able to pull back on the throttle just enough to give the smoker an "English" experience without being obtrusive.

I really enjoy this tobacco, its a lovely way to start the day. Either with a cup of Lapsang Souchong after breakfast (not coffee, that would drown the subtleties of the flavour), or out for an early walk in the fields with a mist still hanging, fresh cool air makes tobacco taste so much better... I imagine a frosty morning would be ideal for enjoying this. The lemon Virginias give this a piquant tang, quite mouthwatering, that really does wake up my tastebuds in the morning, and a sweetness, also from red Virginias that complements this. The sourish, musty spice of the orientals backs this up, fills out the taste, makes it very satisfying. The latakia, if there is any, is applied sparingly, I believe there is some fired tobacco here, there's just a little smokiness, very pleasant.

I have a tin blended in the UK, so I can't comment on the batches by Orlik (although the tin itself is the same shape as the Orlik tins, so perhaps it was blended by Orlik). Whoever mixed it, I'm very satisfied. In my stash I have a really old tin of it, I cant wait to get into that stuff...

Highly recomended.

-----------------UPDATE----------------------------------------

I just broke into the old tin of it, I presume blended by Dunhill: it's one of the old ones with a painted lid. LOVELY! Much the same as the newer tin I'd had, but seems somehow more balanced, the flavours are better integrated. I don't want to bash whoever produced the other tin, this stuff could just be better off for ageing, but this is rather more elegant, more refined. All of those flavours I'd enjoyed are still there, but it's harder to pick the smells of different components apart. Smokes smooth, very smooth, and it is indeed a delicate tasting mixture. Perfect smoke to start the day with.

This is currently my Virginia du jour having recently replaced Bell's Three Nuns. Being new to pipe smoking and having immersed myself in the reviews on this website I just had to try a Dunhill blend didn't I.

First impressions are the attractive packaging - ruffled paper inside the tin with a cardboard cover. Bit disappointed that the tin label was just a sticker and not printed on like back in the day but I guess it's for cost purposes.

Tobacco has a nice aroma in the tin but on lighting has a distinctly musty taste that I find hard to describe. In all honesty the first three bowlfuls of this didn't impress me at all but something just then seemed to click and now I love this tobacco - great taste, good burn and no bite - but only if smoked with respect I find.

I think the name is a bit irrelevant however. Maybe this was an "early morning" mild blend in the 1950s when everyone was smoking Capstan untipped cigarettes but nowadays it surely must be seen as a proper full strength tobacco. With that in mind it is plenty sufficient for me, I was going to also try Dunhill 965 and Light Flake but if they're stronger than EMP I won't be bothering.

The one bad point is the room note. Nothing remarkable when you're actually smoking it but, even worse - when you come back to it 10 minutes later it smells of stale fags ie the pub after a heavy night! Still, I smoke in the garage so no big deal.

This tobacco is very much a "slow burner" in that it grows on you. Recommended if you like virginias.

While it may be a decent smoke for a beginner or for an aromatic smoker looking to make explore the world of English blends, EMP falls short in my book.

This was my first English blend, and I wasn't awfully impressed. Some time has elapsed now, and I find that it is much "flatter" than the bright tastes and casings on some of the aromatics that I've smoked, and not nearly as rich and complex as the Virginia blends I prefer...at times it tasted "dirty."

The smoke itself is cool, slow, and managable. Very easy to control this tobacco and to puff at the temperature and pace of one's particular choosing. This is what makes it a good intro tobacco.

As far as aroma, its less offending than many of the stronger Englishes out there, although does come off as a bit "stale" to those non-smokers who are used to associating pipe smoking with their grandfather's aromatics.

As far as flavor is concerned, it is quite mild. This is your basic English stripped of all the "extras." Its light, you can taste the oriental tobaccos, but they definitely don't stand out like one might hope. In once sense, its a good thing that neither the VAs or the Orientals stand out, because it means that they blend into a cohesive smoke. In another sense, it means the smoke can be boring and monotonous, with no high points popping out at times.

As the name implies, its a good first smoke to ease into one's day, or a good last smoke if you're looking to wind down with something mild. If you're not looking for something special, sweet, rich, bold, or complex this will get you though (although there are better smokes for that job...squadron leader, for example).

I guess one way to put it is that its a good smoke for those who would smoke it...I wouldn't consider myself one who would smoke it. Reading some other reviews, it doesn't seem like a *bad* blend, but one that in no way suits my taste. In light of its simple nature, and the fact that there are a number of similar blends that are yet a bit better, I don't think that I'd recommend this blend.

When blenders change, like in the case of Dunhill, I try hard to give the benefit of the doubt, and evaluate the newer blends on their own merits. Sadly, I just find this lacking, with little to remind us of its former glory except how the tin looks.

I was given a tin of this and now understand why it has lasted so many years. On the plus side it will not bite so puff away. It looks nice in the tin. It packs and light easy and is consistant to the last puff. As I've heard the earlier versions were much better, as I never had the pleasure, I cannot comment except to say , Wish I had! I have been trying out the Orlik made Dunhills - in bulk as well as from tins. The bulk Nightcap and My Mixture 965 are passable blends in their own rights, but vastly inferior to the original products. How shall June tell the glory that went with May ...

Early Morning Pipe was never the light weight blend that its name might have suggested. It was a medium strength blend suitable for all day smoking, with the Dunhill virtues of impeccable ingredients expertly blended for a rich taste and a rich aroma. The Orlik made blend smells the same as the Murray version on opening the tin. In the pipe it lacks some of the roundness and the fullness of the original. There is a certain raw edge to the smoke which detracts from the usual Dunhill finesse. It may be a function of age, because the blend does promise much to the nose.

I have kept tins of EMP, NC, SMMedium and MM 965 for revisiting in six months or so in the hope they will improve.

Back in my college days I took up the pipe. I went through the usual stuff available to one with little or no funds available. The Carter Halls, The Chery Blends, and of course the venerable Prince Albert. Remembering the wonderful aromas from my grandfathers pipe I thought boy did he suffer alot just for the aroma. Well eventually I gave it up. Many years later I decided to try again, dropping in the local tobacco shop I picked up a nice Dr. Grabo, and a few ounce of the shops blend of a very nice aromatic. Needless to say I was very much impressed with it. Then I found another shop a few miles away and decided to see what was out there. To my great surprise there was a young man who basically took me by the hand and led me to the promised land of pipe smoking. Starting me out with Mc Clelland 5100, some Bob's Chocolate, Orlik's Golden Slices and finally to Early Morning Pipe. NOw it is here that I must admit he is not fond of the English type Blends and gave me a bit of a warning that they aren't for everyone. After the first few bowls I was in full agreemant with him. Not willing to give up just yet I had a pipe that had smoke horribly with the other brands I smoked, giving this pipe a thorough cleaning and some time to settle. I found a treasure, This particular pipe and EMP seemed to be made for each other. There were hints of sweetness and the Latakia of which I have become fond of. It has become my early morning pipe. Mind you for me , (who is a reformed cigarette smoker and occasional cigar smoker), it packs a heady wallop if I am not paying attention to it. I must say next to the 5100, this is my favorite blend. Recommended to all who would love to try and English blend.

This new Dunhill Early Morning tastes like a typical Danish tobacco. It no longer has that Dunhill feel, taste or quality. It has a very specific Danish type taste and somewhat a cigarette taste. Perhaps Orlick will get better but so far ,presuming they are working from the old recipe, they are doing something wrong. The Murray's Dunhill was one of my favorite tobaccos. This is my personal favorite of the venerable Dunhill products. In my book, there aren't enough blends on the market that focus primarily on oriental tobaccos without adding heaps of latakia (GLP's Cairo is a notable exception). Although EMP contains latakia, it's a relatively minor amount and you can really focus your attention on the other flavors. As the blend's name suggests, I mainly smoke this in the morning, especially if I'm wanting a decent jolt of nicotine to wake up. As with most Dunhill products, the tobacco quality is superb and it burns well. I'm not fond of the odd, musty taste that seems to accompany Dunhill blends, but it's far less prominent here than in other mixtures. Recommended.

That said, and without being a conoisseur of english mixes, I liked this tobacco but I was not as impressed as I hoped, after hearing all the rave comments on this tobacco, i was a bit underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, It's a solid quality tobacco that has a great full flavor (IMHO, I know that for some of you, calling EMP STRONG makes me a pussy boy) By the aroma and taste I can see some latakia, some ppl say there isn't any at all, but I disagree, it's stronger than what I expected, not schocking but still pretty strong. I'd recommend it as a way of crossing over from aromatics to english type tobbacos. love the tin aroma though. Good, but not great, let's see in a couple of weeks if I change my opinion. Early Morning Pipe has been a longtime favorite of mine, going back to my college days when I first smoked a pipe. It was one of the first "high-class" tobaccos I tried back then (as opposed to the low-priced aromatics I got at the corner drugstore), and I've been enjoying it ever since. It's sort of like an old friend, always dependable, and I find even the artwork on the tin is welcoming and comforting. I like most of the Dunhill mixtures-- Nightcap and Aperitif being my top favorites. When I want something a little less potent, it's often EMP that I reach for. It starts off with that great woodsy and smoky tin aroma, and continues with a pleasingly complex flavor-- just challenging enough to the palate to make things interesting, there's a nice interplay among the Orientals and Virginias. The Virginias here are rather less sweet than they are in some mixtures, but the EMP is nicely balanced. The room note isn't unpleasant-- I'd call it "properly English;" it doesn't hang as heavy in the air as Nightcap's aroma does. I just finished my first tin of Orlik-blended EMP, and they seem to be maintaining the Dunhill formula fairly faithfully. It does seem to have a little more of a nicotine kick than it used to though, and the ribbon cut is a little more raggedy than it was when Dunhill stil produced it themselves. EMP remains a good, reliable medium English blend.

EMP hasa nice varigated color of light to dark. Aroma has a topping similar to Irish Mist. The tobacco is a bit moist and needs to be dried out for about an hour. Upon light you're presented with a sweet almost burnt marshmello and spice flavor that turns bitter and leathery. Nice smoky undertones though. There is a fair amount of nicotine punch for a bowl in the morning which is when I've sampled this. The acrid, leather flavor remains constant to the bottom of the bowl. Early Morning Pipe is my overall favorite tobacco. I don't know if the 115th review of this great tobacco is going to add any startling new insights, but here goes:

There is *just* enough Oriental in it to artistically weave a very pleasant cardamom / cumin flavor into the smoke, but it's emphatically not dominant, not on-top. This blend comes by this subtle flavor naturally. It is not a cased or aromatic tobacco. This tobacco is delicious, smooth, and very satisfying.

This could very easily be an all day smoke. It's definitely an everyday smoke for me. I like heavy English blends and the various VA incarnations very much, but I don't think that every smoke needs to be an epic encounter with a big, dramatic flavor. EMP is my go-to blend and I expect it always will be.

The tobacco was soft and broke easily, making the filling of my pipe a quick and simple procedure. Hastily, I ducked out onto my verandah to savour this renowned smoke.

EMP is delightful. It is not as strong as some other latakia blends, making it a pleasure to smoke prior to the day beginning. It has a slightly sweet aftertaste, but not so sweet as to unfavourably colour my appreciation of the pipe. I do not like aromatics, favouring instead the enjoyable strength of real tobacco flavouring. I was not disappointed.

The pipe required very few relights, which was surprising considering the size of the bowl that I was smoking. As the pipe burned the taste became stronger, leaving me wanting more once the final third was smoked. I would recommend this to anybody who appreciates a stronger tobacco but who is nonetheless looking for something a little milder to start their day.

This was the first pipe tobacco I ever smoked. I began my continuing journey through the world of pipes and tobacco with EMP in 1994. For whatever reason, I never returned to this blend until just recently.

This is a great blend for a new pipe smoker in my opinion as well as deserving of its status as a favorite by so many seasoned veterans. Because I enjoyed this so much as my first tobacco, I bypassed the usual early indoctrination through aromatics and postponed my enjoyment of that type of blend until much later in my hobby when I could appreciate them. I think one of the main reasons people are predjudiced against aromatics is that's what they burn their mouth on when they take up the pipe so they associate them with pain and/or categorize them for the beginner only.

In any case, a more natural English type blend like EMP lets a new pipe smoker know what tobacco tastes like, and does so in a gentle way. I wouldn't introduce someone who's never had an adult beverage to whiskey by serving them some rotgut cheap immitation, or even worse, something disasterous like Southern Comfort, nor would I introduce them to wine with a 4 pack of Bartles and James - they'd get a nice single malt or a Pinot Noir, with a little coaching on how to make the most of it. But I digress.

What Cragganmore is to single malts, EMP is to pipe tobacco. The stoved Virginias provide a slightly sweet and full base while the orientals provide just enough spice. The result is a smooth rich satisfying smoke without any rough edges that packs and burns nicely. If you light this up looking for a latakia bomb you'll be disappointed. I think of it more as a Virginia blend with a little oriental leaf to add fullness and complexity. The condimental leaf is just that. Don't let the name fool you into thinking this is some sort of sawed-off or diluted immitation of something else. It's a fine blend in its own right that meets all reasonable expectations. Highly Recommended - four stars.

There is not much that I can add to discussions of its flavor or strength, besides that I would consider this a good "bridge" blend for those trying to get into English style blends. It made a good transition blend for me, and at the time I was a pretty strong aromatics smoker.

I will probably finish off what little I have left in the tin and then move on to slightly stronger fair. But I think that everyone who hasn't given it a chance should. Its quite good.

How someone would wanna want it in the early morning is beyond me, but it was after work, so I packed the only pipe I had available right then (a chacom neat prince) even though I'd been smoking aromatics in it earlier...

I stuffed my pipe using the "Frank" method (for the first time, it was interesting - and good) with Dunhill Early Morning Pipe. Had a brisk walk outdoors while smoking it. Far from optimal circumstances to judge a new tobacco I gather...

First charring, tamping, recharring, retamping, and then the tobacco was lit and stayed lit all the way down. First impression was a leathery, almost oily smoke but this soon disappearred as I provoked the pipe with some fast puffs. It burnt easy enough(which was one of my concerns about the "Frank" method) and gave a cool dry smoke. The taste was a bit sour, all the way through but at the same time sweet and remarcably dry almost woolen. Dunhill's (Orlick) Early Morning Pipe has the least amount of nicotine of any Dunhill blend that I have smoked. Unfortunately, that fact did not help this pitiful weed. Indeed, the stuff looks fine. It is a pleasant earthy-coloured ribbon cut. It smells unremarkable in the tin--essence of rolling tobacco. I did my best to smoke this stuff but I only found that it made my pipe too hot, my wife retch, my throat sore, and my mouth shrivel. The part about my wife I certainly can get by, but the room note even made me ill. In a word, Early Morning Pipe is dreadful. I could barely smoke this appalling rubbish. A colleague of mine smokes cigarettes and occasionally a pipe. He enjoys Early Morning Pipe. Like I mentioned with Peterson's Irish Oak, this might prove well as a transitional smoke for those looking to make the switch from cigarettes to pipes. Admittedly, by mid-bowl Early Morning Pipe improved slightly by a mellowing of the harshness. Still, I will not smoke it again. Indeed, if I had to begin every morning with this foul weed I would eventually end up jumping off a bridge by afternoon. This is the 100th review of Early Morning Pipe to date.

I have often spoken up for a more restrained expression of English blends in the past. A via media, to use the Anglican term, is what I think best sought when dealing with bright Virginias and the always temperamental Latakia. Here is a mixture that has rather fallen short, though not by adulterating the smoking experience with a massive and pretentious quantity of Latakia.

Perhaps I am never again to be fully satisfied with an English blend, but even the more restrained approach taken with Early Morning Pipe, for me, fails to deliver. Upon lighting up one is titillated with the musky tang found in so many other fine Dunhill English blends. This is not to be the lasting or predominate flavor, however. The smoke very soon gives way to a mundane note of bland, hollow blonde Virginia that tastes like poplar wood smells like when it is burning. Perhaps one or two more times that true English flavor will reassert itself, but again it is not to last.

For my part, I will always reach for a far stouter and heavier tobacco to have with my tea in the morning, and do not generally understand the sentiment that lead to the formulation of Early Morning Pipe. It would seem that the experience I have had smoking this is similar to what others have described when experiencing what they perceive as the uninspired blandness of Dunhill's Elizabethan Mixture. Elizabethan happens to be among my favorites and I will be sure to take it over Early Morning Pipe any day.

Late production EMP is strong in nicotine (Paddy is right), light in Latakia and zesty and subtle in orientals and VAs. Supply is drying up , so this review is mainly for "posterity", and I've not had the Orlik bulk, if there is such a thing. The 5lb bulk packs are (or used to be, I should say) labled made in the UK, so the whether or not the bulk was made by Lane or Murray's should never have been an issue. It should go without saying that I don't find this too light or too weak in either flavor or stength but it is better in a big pipe. I agree EMP has suffered less than any of the other Dunny Englishes over time, varying mainly in nicotine kick (seems to have gotten stronger) while maintaing the same nutty, subtle taste. My flavoring rating refers to Latakia and oriental presence.

Pretty mild stuff this is. Nothing exciting, but it is a relatively enjoyable smoke nonetheless. Compared to many of Dunhill's stronger English blends, the Orientals in EMP seem to have a more dominant role. Unfortunately, they aren't flavorful enough to carry the blend, leaving EMP with a relatively anticlimactic quality that vexes me to some degree. Dunhill's next step up, 965, is about as mild an English blend as I can enjoy and therefore EMP simply tends to fall off my radar. However, like the rest of the Dunhill English line, it is a quality blend that smokes well. Perhaps those lilylivered types that are put off by the potency of the other Dunhills might enjoy this lightweight treat quite a bit. As for me, there are greater rewards to be had in fuller English blends.

While EMP doesn't supply the croaking green nicotine roller-coaster of 965 or the deep intensity of Durbar, it does provide a more refined and subtle approach to the English blend, and is probably my favorite of the current Dunhill selections I've tried.

EMP isn't simply a bland cousin to 965; I am able to detect more subtle and interesting notes in EMP while I find that 965 can almost blast the senses out of register at times.

Moisture content is perfect out of the tin, and to be honest, drying out too much has never been a problem as I cannot leave a tin unfinished for very long. I usually buy EMP two tins at a time, and they never last as long as they should.

And no clue as to why Alfred thought this should be an "early morning" blend; I sometimes smoke this all day and enjoy the first, last, and every bowl in between.

Don't let the name discourage you from trying this blend----this may be the Dunhill you've been looking for.

For many years I was a Balkan Sobranie man. I used to tend to be, let's get technical here, apollonian in approach, rather than dionysian. That means I was looking for the one best, rather than delighting in trying many and enjoying the variety. But when your favourite tobacco disappears, what's to do? When BS went west, so did I in another sense, moving from the UK to Canada, and there I moved on to an aromatic (I know, chalk and cheese) blended by a tobacconist in Toronto. When that business went bust I quit smoking for five years. Now I'm dabbling in pipes again, and finding that EMP is rather like a Balkan Sobranie Light. It has the smoky tin aroma, though less intense (I think Lapsang souchon tea smells more smoky). It has a similar flavour when lit, but again less intense. It has the same tendency to burn a bit hot and to bite if you don't go slowly. It's a good deal lighter with respect to nicotine. There is the same hint of spiciness behind the smoky flavour. While the latakia content is said to be a lot less than in Nightcap, it is more obvious in EMP. An excellent tobacco to keep around, but not rich enough to be a 'this is the only one for me' tobacco. I find it a delightful way to make a break between heavier flavoured smokes, a sort of sorbet betwen courses.

One of the best Dunhills on the market, it doesn't seem to suffer the decadence of some other productions by this brand. It's really not so light as someone might think by its name but it's suitable for all-day smoke. The best thing about it is that not many tobaccos can be so full with a relatively low nicotine content, but this one is really satisfying and fullfilling.

So I was cautious even with this mild blend. But It's been okay, I'm taking it slow, day by day, puff by puff. As I'm starting to settle down I'm beginning to appreciate the some of the nuances of the smoke, the fine blend of the tobaccos, the slow burn. It's getting better. I think we'll make it.

It is medium strength and slightly sweet with a typical english taste and aroma. I gave this 4 stars because it is rich and tasty without having a heavy or muddy taste that, although I like sometimes, is not the preference among many in the morning. I quite enjoyed this blend, but find it a touch harsh on the throat; perhaps EMP is better suited for a more frequent/ experienced smoker? I love the aroma in the tin (a leathery, woody smell), although this does not really come across in the smoking experience itself. The tobacco is best left to air for half an hour prior to smoking, after which it packs and lights relatively easily. Few re-lights are required, and I agree with reviewers who comment on the campfire/ burning Autumn leaves aroma. A great nicotine hit too, however this tobacco is not really for me.

This is quite simply a delicious, un-pretentious and satisfying smoke at any time in the day.

I often find myself sitting out under the stars, with a pipeful and chuckling to myself about what time exactly in the morning they were aiming at (Perhaps 1 or 2am?) :).

I find this an interesting and tasty blend, that seems to smoke well, but Is a little moist when the tin is new - but this is a good thing. Better too moist than too dry - just leave a pipeful on a plate for ten minutes prior to indulging.

The Latakia is smoky and rich, but blended in a manner that is not overpowering (This was actually the first english I tried whilst smoking aromatics exclusively).

The finished product is well rounded, tasty and interesting, with a satisfying and mild smoke. In my opinion, its a little low on nicotine, but certainly not to the level where I would consider it weak.

All in all, one of my favorites for many reasons.

This is the first tobacco I will review, as I consider it the first 'real' tobacco I smoked.

I began pipe smoking with a few local blends that I found in the jars at my local smoke shop. They were defiantly aromatics, not to say that they were all that bad. When I finally got around to doing some Internet research, I read on "The Professor's Pipe Page and Tobacco Bar" this little ditty, "I finally tried a couple of natural, English-style blends, despite warnings that these were for more serious, seasoned pipe smokers only. Surprisingly, these tobaccos provided the kind of taste experience I was somehow hoping for."

I knew the moment I read this, that I needed to start smoking English-style blends immediately. Unfortunately I was out of town when I read this, so it wasn't a few days till I could get my hands on some tobacco. When I finally got home, I rushed to the tobacco man and asked for some guidance on picking an introductory English blend. He gave me Early Morning Pipe and said, "Study this, when you're done, come back and talk to me again." The second I laid my eye's on what I still believe to be the greatest of tin art (along with it's darker more serious brother nightcap), I knew I was in for a lifetime of enjoyment!

I marched home eagerly awaiting the treat that lay in the small brown bag I was holding. I popped the tin, this was the first tin of tobacco I had ever popped, and marveled at the esthetic quality of the packaging. So naturally I loaded up the bowl of my cheapo Dr. Grabow and fired it up.

I can remember the first puff, oh the joy! From then on, that puff is the benchmark flavor that I associate with English-style tobacco. I've been in love ever since. Out of all the tobaccos I smoke, this is the only tin that I keep when I am finished. I don't know why, all they do is lie in the corner collecting dust. I do, however, enjoy looking at the stack and remembering all the varied memories associated with smoking this beautiful blend.

Most mornings, it is EMP that I start the day with. However, I often return to it a few times throughout the day. This is certainly one of my favorite blends, I owe a lot to my friend at the smoke shop. In just the same manner, I would recommend this blend to anyone wanting to journey into the wonderful world of English-style tobacco smoking!

As many others have a tendency to compare this tobacco to 965, I will not. This tobacco in no way resembles the complexity and depth of 965. EMP is however a marked blending achievement in its own respect. This blend is dominated by the presence of bright orientals, though dark leaf obviously contributes a high percentage of the composition. The oriental content overides the presence of VA. The mildness of the orientals is complemented by a slight sweetness lended by the natural sugar content of the VA. Finally, the latakia adds a smokey essence that does seem to be a bit more overbearing than other reviewers have noted. I believe that this is due largely impart to the mildness of the orientals matched to the latakia. Even though the latakia content is lighter than full-strength English blends, it holds more leverage against the lighter bodied tobaccos that comprise the rest of the contents. This blend is not what I consider to be a great smoke in the morning. I prefer Gawith and Hoggart's dark Kentucky with an addition of 10% perique per volume. I like a stronger nicotine punch to complement the dark aribica coffee that I drink in the morning. Although a popular blend with many, I prefer to save this blend for the occasional change of pace from the deeper, darker blends that my pallet prefers. Smoking a bowl of this tobacco leaves me appreciating the likes of Gawith's Commonwealth, 965, and Nightcap even more. Point blank, too much oriental leaves this tobacco flat and rather one dimensional for my taste.

Of late I have sought a variety of light latakia blends. Although I can enjoy full blends, I prefer to treat Latakia as a condiment, not the main course. Naturally I had to try this classic from Dunhill. I must say, the blend is well named. It packs, lights, and behaves so well, one could do it while almost asleep. The flavor is right there from the beginning. Dry, toasty Virginia, spicey, tangy orientals, and just enough Latakia to give a gentle smokey flavor. The turkish is present in the aroma, as well as a clean woodsy scent. I don't believe this is topped or cased, the description on the tin simply tells us this is a delicate blend. Other reviewers have stated they find this blend boring and bland. I see it as being solid and consistent. This is precisely what I want while reading the paper, or a good book. I want the smoke to be comfortable, and discreet, not demanding of my attention.

I can certainly see this being an excellent introduction to English style blends. I don't see this as a wake up for any Latakia lover, as it will leave them wanting. I will certainly buy more.

I have been smoking this mixture so long I thought I'd already reviewed it! Some other reviewer has said the bulk Dunhills are made by Lane in America. I don't know if this is true or not but I do think the tinned version is superior to the bulk I have smoked. Where the bulk blend is alright, the tinned version is excellent. I guess the bulk version could suffer fro improper storage, mis-handling, or in some cases be the wrong tobacco entirely. This has happened to me using internet tobacconists! Even the local shops goof sometimes. Especially when an inexperienced clerk with little tobacco knowledge is filling your order. Anyway about this tobacco: It truly is a benchmark in my opinion. A perfectly balanced English for any time of the day. The only time it lacks taste is after some of the stronger European flakes, twists, curly-cuts, etc. If I had to recommend a beginner English, I would probably recommend Skiff as I find it milder than E.M.P. That being said, I prefer E.M.P. as I find it a bit richer or more forward in taste than Skiff. I would also caution those who live in drier climates not to follow the "leave the lid off the tin for a week." If you live in a low humidity or semi-arid area of the world, just breaking the seal and not smoking it for a month or so will dry it up to the consistency of twigs! The Dunhill tins don't reseal all that well in my opinion. This same drying out happened to me with the London Mixture and Royal Yacht tins also. I would suggest transferring the tobacco to a sandwich bag or sealed container of some sort once the desired dryness has been achieved.

In the beginning I always get the automn breeze, I'm reminded of smoking leaves. There's a whole bunch of exotic flavours to discover accompanied by a smooth sweetness which is close to licorice.

It's best to let it dry out a little and than go to the cool early morning experience.

I believe it is called "Early Morning Pipe" as to truly savor it, you must have a relatively fresh palate. I first tried smoking EMP after pipes of 965, Night Cap, and other rounder tasting blends. I could barely get a thing out of the smoke aside from...dull smoke.

With a clean mouth and a refreshed pipe, I can taste a burst of tangy citrus orientals, musky turkish, hints of sweet VA and a tiny bit of Latakia. All billowing out through out the bowl. Fairly complex yet not overwhelming in flavor. As I had hoped and suspected, I classify this as "Durbar Light". Less power, harshness. Still plenty of taste. As others have noted, this is NOT light as far as nicotine goes. Expect a VERY high nicotine kick. Nightcap usually gives me little trouble, this made my head spin.

Similar to Pease Samarra, though a bit fuller in a cigar like flavor. While I enjoy it, I believe there are other tobaccos in this category (Orient Express, Baalbek, Samarra) that are a bit more interesting. Though I believe the strength in this tobacco, like many of the Dunhill line I've been recently working on, comes in the pedigree and reliability. And at the price (if you hunt around), you likely won't be disappointed by a bowl of EMP if you like Oriental blends on the lighter flavor side.

After getting a whif of a jar of this stuff at the tobacconist, I was interested. It was like an english, but not. It had a lot more of a virginia aroma, with a note of oriental.

The flavor changes between two main stages for me: REALLY TASTY, and 'sortof bland'. Unlike most reviewers, I actually get the best flavor out of my bowls from the first third, midway the flavor dies down, and then occasionally comes back at the bottom. 'Really Tasty' is awesome; it's a mix between spicy and nutty, with a hint of virginia sweetness added in. Some people have said there's Latakia present, but I'm not so sure. If there's latakia, it's in a negligible amount. I didn't detect it at all.

I could see, flavor wise, why people would want to smoke this in the morning. But I definetely wouldn't. I'm not a morning pipesmoker anyways, but my sample has nuclear tongue bite. It does smoke pretty hot too. All these wifes out there that hate pipesmoke will probably not appreciate the aroma, but I liked it, it's the first blend I've had that actually smelled like pipesmoke to me.

It's getting towards my perfect blend, but because of the bite, heat and often dissapearance of taste, I have to give it a 3. Maybe I should try some non-latakia oriental blends and see if I like that.

This is a tobacco which goes through a transition, starting out with just a hint of sweetness provided by the Virginias and just a hint of a bite, almost like a Perique (although no Perique is supposed to be in it) then it really mellows out and the Latakia kicks in. A great all day smoke if you like a milder English. Not the strongest as far as nicotine goes, but enough to wallop the uninitiated. The tobacco smells nice in the tin, full of Latakia, it burns clean and leaves a nice gray-white ash, very little or no dottle. The tobacco is a nice cut and appears to be of high quality, it lights easily and requires very little relighting. For me, an enjoyable smoke anytime of the day, again not as strong as 965 or Nightcap but a good choice when something lighter is desired. If you are not a fan of the heavier English blends, you might want to try this one, it might be a good blend for someone wanting to crossover from straight Virginias or Aromatics. Unbelievable! Quite simply unbelievable! For some reason I have avoided trying this weed. I think it was the words mild and delicate that caused me to instill a subconsious aversion to trying this. I have since been cured of this aversion to say the least. I recently read somewhere that the references to strength that Dunhill(Murray) uses on the tins is in reference to Latakia content. Well, this may not have a high Latakia content, but it is certainly rich and satisfying. This blend showcases how important the Va's are in an English blend. These are simply the best there are. This has become my new favorite Dunhill blend, right beside Nightcap. I detect no flavorings here, just the absolute very best weed there is. The blend does pick up some intensity the further down it burns, but never nips, nor gets sour. The last third marries the VA's and Orientals into a perfect tobacco bliss! You must try this.... Now...... Hurry.....!

Here is a review after my first bowl of this. Smoking it reminds me of burning leaves on a cool fall day. The smell of the opened tin has a most unique scent. It packs well and required one relight. The flavor is not really describable. It is a rich nutty, smokey smooth flavor. I would not smoke this first thing in the morning but this is a good change up between your usual pipe. I will include this in my rotation. Don't let the name throw you off. Give it a try.

The first tobacco I tried after many years of cigarette smoking.

The tin has a great smell, but when smoked it is rather bland.

Not as mild as someone might expect, but I prefer stronger and tastier stuff like Nightcap.

As a whole, a well-balanced, pleasant tobacco: sometimes I like to smoke it. It is simple, never boring, and in some moments of the day it is just what I need, but not usually the kind of taste I am looking for.

UPDATE February 2004: With some more experience, and some slower puffing, it's actually quite a tasty blend. It's quite stout and "heavy" on the throat and palate, and quite nicotine-laden. Its toasted/oriental taste reminds a bit of Gawith's Squadron Leader. It can get a bit bitter towards the end of the bowl.

One of the most stable Dunhill products, quality wise.

This has to be smoked in a clean pipe and smoked slowly to fully enjoy the subtle complexities that rise and inter mingle through out the bowl. This will get your attention in the morning. I agree with those who call this a lighter alternative to 965, but let this not imply that it is light. It?s still a Dunhill English, which means there's a goodly amount of Mr. Nick O?Teen in this bowl.

The flavors are rustic and dynamic at once. It is a fine way to spoil yourself so early in the morning, if that's how you begin your day. I like to ease myself into the day, however, so it's not something I'd smoke in the morning--too much too soon. BUT, this is a great mid day or evening smoke. Wonderful flavors abound, just like with 965. A great smoke--my #3 for English blends behind 965 and Peterson's Old Dublin.

An English smoker trying to develop an interest in Virginia blends, I decided I?d give this a try, as reviews indicated that the Virginia presence is more noticeable in this blend than in other Dunhill English blends. Initially I was infatuated, though that faded as I gradually noticed an occasional and unpleasant sharpness.

Perhaps it?s a side effect of the marketing, perhaps the nature of the blend, but I generally do smoke this in the morning with a cup of strong, black coffee. The bitterness of the coffee and the sweetness of the Virginia play off each other nicely, but not so pleasantly that I smoke this even close to daily. For me, once every two or three weeks is perfect. A diehard 965 fan, I find that blend much more satisfying in the morning (afternoon or evening, for that matter).

I dropped by my local tobacconist to see if I could grab a 100g tin of McClelland?s Frog Morton, which with my luck, was fresh out. He asked me what I was looking for in general and after talking for about 15 minutes or so suggested I pick up a tin of Dunhill?s Early Morning Pipe. A great introduction to English blends, or so he told me.

After arriving at my house that night I set the tin on my kitchen table and seemed to stare at it for a long while. I wasn?t sure what was going to happen but I was full of excitement. I cracked the tin and stuck my nose right in it. Is that Ketchup I smell? or perhaps an old musty leather bag or jacket left in someone?s closet only to be discovered years later? You either like this smell or hate it. I was completely taken in by it!! Wonderful.

The tobacco consisted 60% light and 40% dark ribbon cut strands. It comes firmly packed in the tin and requires one to loosen up with fingers before packing. Packs and lights easily.

With this my first English blend I wasn?t sure what to expect, although I very much liked the tin aroma. Upon lighting a very nice and light ?nutty? flavor comes through. The smoke was very cool and I enjoyed it with no tongue bite at all. I tasted all kinds of different flavors but for some reason was constantly reminded of the crisp autumn and the burning of a fireplace or leaves. This made me toke the tobacco with pleasure. I did find that if I provoked this tobacco to much, it produced a tiny bit of harshness on the back of my throat, so I took more care in smoking the rest of the bowl. The tobacco seems to get heavier and a bit darker towards the bottom. It did require a pipe cleaner in the stem before finishing and produced a small bit of moisture. The tobacco burs to a thin gray ash and leaves little moisture in the bottom of the bowl. But why the name Early Morning Pipe? It is a great smoke any time of day, but if you like to start your mornings with a little kick, then EMP it is!! Being a fairly new smoker myself, I would highly recommend this to someone wanting to experiment with English blends. Its very mild, the mix of tobaccos is smooth and not overpowering, and full of wonderful flavors. I will always keep a tin of this on hand.

I?m looking forward to moving on to some other tasty treats, but I?m very glad I started here. Thank you Early Morning Pipe.

I, for one have never smoked this while drinking champagne or ever been aware of feeling "praeternaturally suave". EMP is the tobacco equivalent to a middle aged German bus driver: solid, comfortable and entirely unlikely to do anything unsettling. Said blend contains enough latak for the "woodsy" set as well as a substantial amount of orientals. I do not taste much VA, but what do I know, I reside near the "woodsy" camp. A step in the right direction for those looking for an english experience which will not masticate the respiratory system, and a suitable choice for those moments when the reviews all blur together and piping becomes just so many electronic blips, whirling around your PC.

First I tried Frog Morton and found that it's a wonderful smoke, and that the Latakia taste was working for me.

Now I've tried EMP which seems richer in Latakia than FM, not to mention un-topped. This is a keeper. Smooth juicy smoke, musty but at the same time tastefully sweet

Having just tried GLP's Renaissance it seemed they might be similar. Wrong, very voodoo. Strong. First bowl was torture. The tobacco has a thin shag cut, and was very moist even after 3 years. But if you adopt the sippin' whisky techinique the qualities of this blend become apparent. But on the whole to strong for me, I feel a rougher cut would help this brand. A solid English but a blend like Renaissance fits in with my idea of an early morning pipefull.

This blend starts off oddly due to its name. Dunhill has invoked an impression of something very light to start the day. Then they suggest the ingredients are "merely" some Virginias and some Sweet Oriental.

Well... reality isn't always what it seems.

After a few smokes of this fine blend I have concluded the following:

This is not a mild mix of light tobaccos, rather a nice, easy English blend with a touch of Latakia to compliment the Virginias and Orientals. It is mellow and cool to smoke. The blend has enough body to remain interesting throughout and to entice you to another when done.

Finally, I find this smokes extremely well at the end of the day when you are reday to settle down for one last puff and head off to bed. Perhaps it is meant to settle the mind for sleep so as to anticipate tomorrow's Early Morning.

I think others have said this but I'll say it again. To me this seems like a milder version of Dunhill 965; milder in taste but not lacking much nicotine if any. Apparently the early-morning smoker sitll wants their full dose of nicotine to get them started for the day. Then again maybe I'm just too sensitive to nicotine or something.

Even though this is supposedly mild I found it stronger in flavor than the last mild english I smoked (Valle Crucis) so I'm rating it medium on that. Valle Crucis was a bit too mild for me and EMP is about as mild as I think I can stand in an English blend without getting annoyed at the lack of latakia flavor.

I detect a slight soapy flavor so I'm assuming that there is a little bit of casing involved in this somewhere.

Overall I think this is quality stuff but to me it's nothing special. Maybe if I were more of an "Early morning" or all-day smoker, and i smoked more 965, I'd see more point to this stuff, but to me theres no special appeal. If you find yourself craving a milder 956 at times though then give this a try.

I have also tried it in the afternoon and ended up wondering why I didn't try something more full-bodied (965). Now it sits on the "why did I bother" pile, waiting to join the others in my can of "BriarNorth Blend". Upon tasting, I receive the VA but not strongly. There is no sweetness at all. It's enhanced with Latakia & Oriental but none of the above are overpowering. They are well balanced and even. Dry woodsy to sometimes slightly bitter (but in a positive way).

Aroma wise, my wife is not fond of it but she lives with it. She says it smells like "Burning Leaves" (when she's in a good mood) and "Just Smoke" (when she's in a bad one). Apparently, It's not for mixed gatherings.

And last, I have a habit of inhaling Early Morning more then most of my other tobaccos. Maybe it satisfies the old cigerette smoker in me.

I got acquainted with Dunhill?s Early Morning Pipe after trying two stronger Latakia blends: My Mixture 965 and Balkan Sobranie, so in many ways it was a very agreeable surprise to find an optional, milder smoking blend containing Latakia and Orientals.

A difference I find with many of its stronger relatives, is that EMP has a sharper effect on the palate immediately after lighting up. Not sweet, not dense, but almost thrifty, its components seem to incessantly compete with one another, as if seeking to desperately assert themselves before being gobbled up by the others. Mid bowl, however, the flavour settles down, achieving some nuttiness and strength but without entirely leaving the mild zone. Mild in this case is not equivalent to smoothness, and that is one of the paradoxes that quizzes me about EMP, for that initial sharpness seems to remain the only constant effect throughout the smoke and, by the end of the bowl, it can reach a certain degree of harshness on the bitter side. I also find it tends to burn a tad drier than other Latakia/Oriental blends, and in spite of the respectable amount of Latakia I find it difficult to reach the ?zone?.

Otherwise, it is a very lively and enjoyable smoke; a good change of pace when seeking to drift slightly from the more conventional blends of this type, and a recommendable overture to fuller English compositions. Maybe Dunhill?s idea was to create a smoking continuum, in which EMP opens the day, followed either by Apertiff or Standard Mixture Medium, finishing with My Mixture 965 or Nightcap. Nowadays I find that the transition from EMP to any other Dunhill Latakia blend has become too steep and radical for me. IMO, London Mixture is by far a better starting point, and virtually an all day symphony.

Like most reviewers I find the name of EMP a bit on the deceptive side - not a 'first thing in the morning'-type smoke for me, this tobacco certainly does pack a significant punch and my first encounter with it left me with my head reeling.

EMP smells great in the tin and I decided to take the advice of previous users and left the lid off for a week or so to try and dry it out. It lights well with a good charring and doesn't require above average attention to keep it going. The flavour starts smoothly, more 'Virginia' than anything else but as you smoke down the bowl so the presence of the Orientals and the Latakia grows and so does its strength and power. I found the smoke increasingly harsh, especially on the back of my throat and as I neared the bottom of the bowl got a slight feeling of light-headedness. The advice from a previous reviewer to take a breather midway through is probably wise.

EMP is a 'clean' smoke, just a fine grey ash is all that is left from a satisfying session.

But overall I would say EMP is disappointingly bland and without the smoothness of other Dunhill blends like London Mixture. However, I have several tins of EMP and will return to it now and again as an alternative or 'resting' tobacco from my usual favourites.

Tin Aroma: A nice mellow english-type smell. Bits of sugary virginia waft in and out of the predominate muskiness of latakia and oriental varietals.

Physical Characteristics: A standard Dunhill wide cut ribbon, comprised of almost exclusively dark brown and black pieces. Packs easily and burns evenly and slowly, to a gray, grainy ash.

Notes:I am not sure exactly what this blend is flavored with, but it most definately is flavored with something. Something vaguely sweet, and perhaps vegetal. Heck, even the tin says so "mildly flavoured", which is about as apt a description as I could give it, unfortunately. The flavoring is very light at first, but becomes more noticeable as the bowl progresses. It is a mild and pleasant blend, and probably, as it's name suggest, appropriate in the morning. I never really took to this blend though, probably for the nagging wonder about what exactly was used to case this. This reminds me of what My Mixture 965 would be like if it were cased. Tongue bite is a rarity with this blend, but also, for me, so is enjoying the last few puffs, as whatever flavoring agent is used seems to concentrate in the bottom of the bowl as the smoke progresses, amking the last few puffs unpleasant.

Verdict: A nice blend, I suppose, but nothing that really grabs me.

I had fond memories of this when I opened my most recent tin. I had not tried it in 8-10 years, but have recently rediscovered an enjoyment of light English style blends, where light refers to latakia content. After setting the open tin out to air for about a week, I found that the pungent aroma was very nice, and fuller than I recalled. The initial taste and flavor was nutty, turning quickly to short passage through a bright and citrus-like period when the virginias took hold. The middle half of the bowl was characterized by a delightful spiciness that was complex and changed often. The bottom third settled down into a nice consistent flavor that was restful after the quick turns and changes of the middle bowl. The light volume of latakia was noticed in this portion of the bowl as a solid bottom note rather than the smokiness that is often the characteristic flavor in mixtures with a heavier concentration of the dark, smoked leaves.

There was no tongue bite and it certainly did not overwhelm the palate. Tasty and complex for a light latakia blend. Highly recommended.

I do have to mention that this tin had aged for 7-8 years. I have also recently tried the bulk version of this, which I find to be sweeter and less complex in the nutty tones that I enjoy in the tin. I hope more recent tins are not reduced in their complexity and overall flavor. (4/02)

Tis I, the nemisis of the quintessential English blends. Well, not this time, at least not as strongly as with 965.

Early Morning Pipe is indeed a mild blend so far as its "kick", that is the nicotine content. It will not shock the nervous system into overdrive as some blends will. That being said, this is not a blend that will induce nausea at 6 a.m.

The tobacco, cut, and packaging are all vintage Dunhill (read:Benchmark). The tobacco packs and lights very well, and stays lit. As another review noted, it is a low maintainence tobacco.

This is one English mixture that I can tolerate to some degree despite my aversion to Turkish tobaccos. The Virginias dominate early on and the Oriental factor is lighter and later than in 965. It is in fact a good smoke for any time of the day when you want something that is clean, fresh, but not overly contemplative.

I would try to like it much more, but in the end, that little Oriental chap has me put out.

Since other reviewers describe the physical characteristics and composition of Early Morning Pipe, I should like to focus on the subjective experience of smoking the blend. As I write this review I am smoking EMP in a favorite briar, and drinking good coffee, and it is indeed early morning. (I wanted to place myself in an authentic setting for the review.) EMP is mild, and perhaps that's part of the plan. It is, therefore, either a very good or a very poor first smoke of the day, depending on whether one desires to be gently or more forcefully awoken. For me, the gentle approach is favored, and this feeling is shared by my wife, who also enjoys the mild room aroma of EMP. But don't let the name Early Morning Pipe lead you astray: the tobacco is fine any time of the day when one desires a comfortable, mild smoke that doesn't clamor for attention. The tobacco burns quite nicely (I call it a "low maintenance smoke") to the bottom of the bowl, requiring very little care. Thus, one can read the paper, drink coffee, smoke a pipe, and enter the day in a civilized manner quite befitting. Sometimes I think of myself as an Englishman at the turn of the 20th century, sitting in my country home on a cool morning, watching the pheasants and the sheep move gingerly through the dew-laden grass around the estate. In my fantasy I am smoking an old Dunhill filled with EMP while the household comes to life. But then reality breaks in -- the noise and bustle of Manhattan gets my attention, and the mists of England vanish in a cloud of EMP smoke. Still, I am content with my pipe, and face the day with calm and hopeful demeanor. That's the glory of Early Morning Pipe, a tobacco I respect and admire.

Aroma: The Virginias seem to be on the sharrp side, rather than sweet and mellow. There is a fairly good Latakia and urkish presence.

Packing: Packs easily into medium and large pipes.

Lighting: Again, typical Dunhill. Always needs a full charring light. Slow, steady burn rae follows immediately.

Initial flavor: First taste is slightly harsh, not as gentle as I expected. There is more strength of flavor here than in Std. Mild Mixture.

Mid-bowl: This is not my wake up pipe tobacco. It seems to be more of a medium blend, but harsher than most other Dunhill?s. There is nice complexiy from the condiments, but the sharp edge keeps me from enjoying it. It also causes me to produce more saliva as a reaction to the flavor.

Finish: Even harsher at the end.

Summary: Not a nice tobacco at all, IMHO. It needs more mellow red Va. to smooth it down. It?s hard for me to imagine why this is as popular as it is.

This light flavouring is great first thing in the morning when something a bit more potent might not go well on an empty stomach or on sleepy taste buds.

I have never had toung bite with this tobacco and it is a tobacco which you can go on smoking for quite a while, but the blandness of it can become boring after smoking it for 15 minutes, so I say it is best smoked in a smaller bowl. This is another of Dunhill's solid English blends, along with Nightcap, 965, and Standard Mixture Medium.

The visual appearance is an equal mixture of dark and light ribbon cut tobaccos. The predominant odor is Latakia. Although it isn't listed on the tin, Latakia is definitely present.

EMP lights and smokes fine. It's mildly sweet, but I would definitely say it's a Latakia blend. Many people say it's a mild English. I think with the amount of Latakia it's more in the medium range. It's milder than Nightcap and 965 but still stands up and it's less harsh than Standard Medium with very little to no bite. The balance between Latakia and the Orientals gives this an easier room note than tobaccos heavier in Latakia.

Overall a very good English and one of my standard Dunhill blends along with Nightcap.

Latakia Lenny 07/26/2001 Mild to Medium None detected Medium Tolerable recommended
The normal morning here begins early. A cup of coffee with the wife, toast or a light breakfast, wake up and begin the day. The second cup of coffee generally is accompanied with the first pipe of the day,and a scan of the local newspaper.I have been smoking a pipe now for some time and a creature of habit the first bowl is usually 3 Nunns,Escudo or Early Pipe. By this time the wife begins her daily routine, though, doesn't seem to mind the aroma of my morning selection. "It's better then some of the stuff you smoke" is her comment regarding the room note. Definitely a Dunhill Blend, (My Mixture 965 and Night Cap are two of my all time favorites)it packs and lights nicely. Average number of relights. They don't list Latakia in the Tin Description but it displays a Latakia presence, especially after the halfway point. A smooth, some what mild taste with little or no moisture build-up. A slight nutty and smokey taste increases near the end of the bowl. More often then not, if I start the day with it, it's a Dunhill day, a bowl or two of My Mixture 965 and ending with the last smoke of the evening, a bowl of Night Cap. Overall, a very nice tabacco, if you like English blends, you'll enjoy this one. If you're thinking of trying an English blend this would be a good one to start with, though some may think it strong.

While not as knock-you-on-your-butt-strong as 965, this tobacco still packs some punch. If you like My Mixture 965, you'll likely enjoy this as a somewhat lighter alternative. If you prefer Frog Morton, however, this may be a surprise! I loaded up my first bowl of this in a rather large Stanwell Golden Danish poker, thinking that, from the other reviews I have read, this shouldn't be too strong. And perhaps it isn't, if you don't find My Mix 965 at all strong. Two thirds of the way through this one, however, I stood up and noticed that I had become rather dizzy without realizing it. I rested for half an hour before finishing the bowl, and am glad that I did so. The tobacco is somewhat long-cut, with multiple shades of brown and a rather strong Latakia smell in the tin. It packed and lit easily, burning fairly well with about the average number of relights. The first third of the bowl was nice, with Latakia clearly present in the flavor and odor. The nutty, woodsy taste did not dominate, however, and the other tobaccos blended nicely with it to make a rather mild (in flavor) smoke. Getting into the second third, I find that the flavor is more complex and a bit darker, but still very mild with no bite at all. At this point, I stand up and decide I need to rest for a time. Starting in on the last third the complexity seems to diminish, though that could be due to the half-hour wait before proceeding. There is a very little moisture in the bottom of the pipe, and I am able to finish the bowl with little dottle. Overall, a nice smoke that I would not classify as an "early morning" experience, as least in my case. If not for the strength, I might recommend this as an all-day smoke somewhat lighter than My Mixture 965. I personally, however, prefer Frog Morton or Mephisto to this well-blended but rather average tobacco.
