I had to smile when I saw this in the pouch. You see, if you are familiar with my reviews, you will notice that I don't disdain any style of tobacco blend.

I've smoked some pretty distinguished stuff: Gawith's FVF, Nightcap, Old Gowrie...

However, these old school plug cut Burley blends are the ones I come home to. These blends were the most common in the U.S. up until the 1970s, when the Danish Cavendish invasion began.

This blend is a fine representative. It is smooth, nutty, gently sweet with nuances of vanilla and maple. A raisiny, figgy, fruitiness pokes in from time to time. As the bowl progresses some hints of spice show up as the pepperiness of the Burley interacts with the casing.

It can burn hot if you puff it up, but it never punished me for my insolence. It didn't get bitter or ashy either. Relights were few, and were not traumatic. So this is good quality Burley.

Easy to pack, easy to smoke, tasty, smells good. I love it. If you enjoy but lament the quality of the OTC legends, like Sir Walter Raleigh, Prince Albert and the departed Edgeworth Ready Rubbed, this will give you a top quality replacement. Of course it costs more. But you do get what you pay for here.

However, if you are looking for a rich, complex, contemplative blend...don't kid yourself!

Agree with pretty much all the taste notes from other reviews. This is a blend I can smoke all day and not tire of. It is definately burley but it has that nice topping. Not to much either, just enough to keep it interesting. The burley taste does come through more towards the end of the bowl. Am ordering 7 oz and highly recommend to others.

As I am writing this I am enjoying some Double Eagle tobacco in an Andrew Marks bent egg overlooking the Texas hill country in beautiful Austin Texas. Double eagle is decribed as a light aromatic, that is delightfully mild and cool. The tobacco an air cured, cube cut burley that is very mild and is reminiscent of old Prince Albert, or Edgeworth. Opening the bag you are hit with a wonderful aroma of vanilla, and figs. The tobacco moisture was just perfect out of the bag. I was amazed at how cool this tobacco smokes, the vanilla flavor is great but not overpowering and the nutty burley flavor develops about halfway through the smoke. This tobacco is simply wonderful, I am very surprised at the quality of tobacco, and the consistancy of the smoke. I’d like to commend Jack and the team over at Sterling Tobacco for such a wonderful smoke.

This came as a free sample from Sterling. A very generous amount I might add. The Sterling site asked what tobaccos I usually enjoyed, and my list of OTC burleys led them to send me Double Eagle, a cube-cut burley, that in the bag smelled of vanilla, raisins, maybe a little maple. My sample was a tad moist, but the little cubes lit up in my cob just fine. The smoke tasted terrific, a little like Prince Albert or a very moist Sir Walter Raleigh. It had that nutty, burley taste that I like best. The nicotine caught up with me a little toward the end, but this tobacco never turned bitter or nasty on me all the way to the bottom. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys the old-time codger burleys. A very pleasant free sample from Sterling, from whom I'll certainly be ordering in the future.

This is the first review I have done re: Sterling Tobaccos - and I have to say - that I am surprised that no one has stepped up to the plate until now. So far Jack Peterson's blends are all excellent!

In this review I will be covering "Double Eagle" which is a sample of pipe tobacco - I got from Jack Peterson last week in the mail.

I really like this blend and can only compare it to an after dinner cordial. My reasoning is due to the extremely cool smoke this mild aromatic gives upon smoking. The taste is nothing like I have ever experienced in 20 years of pipe collecting and smoking. It is something - completely different - in taste. And different isn't necessarly a bad thing as is the case of "Double Eagle."

The pouch smell is a vanilla. While the taste has the following notes: Vanilla, pine, forest, and maple. A nuttiness (probably from the cubed burly) makes an appearance towards the end of the bowl - about 3/4 the way down. You can definitely taste the burly tobacco - so this blend lives up to its description of 'light aromatic.'

The coolness of the taste is a perfect tobacco to smoke after a heavy meal or if you have eaten spicy foods. Although I have smoked this blend on an empty stomach with satisfying results too.

In addition, there is no pipe funk left in the bowl or tongue bite while smoking which makes one want to pack his or her pipe again - that is - when the siren calls for this kind of smoke.

I highly recommend this blend and although it will not be joining a standard tobacco rotation - this is a tobacco I would pick - when I would want something completely different to smoke. Will definitely be picking up more of this tobacco in the future.
