Oh my gosh what a crap. The most close thing to a horror film. Nearly ruined me a good pipe, let alone my tongue and mouth.

Dutch Masters Cav… A new one for me. While out and about, I stopped at a reservation smoke shop and what did I find, a pipe tobacco called Dutch Masters, buy one get one free deal, so I did. First off it tastes nothing like a cigar. To me it has a faint taste of Atadis creamed burley, with some tang from bright Virginias. And of Corse some flavors coming from the whiskey topping. But whatever it is, I’m enjoying it.

As normal (for me at least) with this type tobacco, I put the contents of the pouch in a bowl to dry down to point where the tobacco feels dry but is still springy. Light-up was easy, and soon there were clouds of thick mild smoke to enjoy, that were both bite free and flavorful. There is some tongue tingle present, but easy to control with basic technique. Overall a pleasant surprise, where the tobaccos are the dominate taste, with some sweetness and tang present to help round out its unique flavor. Add to that good burn characteristics, and IMO you have a winner. Not my go-too tobacco, but well worth a try, recommended.

This is the old reliable for me when it comes to drugstore variety tobacco. It's not too harsh, not too weak. The flavoring is nice, the bourbon really comes through, and the aroma is very pleasant. Tobacco is clean and moist right out of the pouch. Not my first choice for tobacco, but certainly my first choice if I'm in my local smoke shop.

I was sent a pouch of this tobacco to review by a buddy, with a note that they hoped I would review it. I remember Dutch Masters being an inexpensive cigar that was smooth as far as OTC cigars go and thought I would think it would not be very good. But, boy was I surprised! It comes in an orange colored roll up pouch and says it is a mix of tobaccos flavored and mellowed with bourban whiskey. I had rememberances of BR Bourbon and it's hotness on the tongue and expected that. I lit up my pipe with this great smelling, sweet aroma, wide ribbon cut blend and was awarded with just such bite. But I changed to a slow pace and just puffed it and WOW was it a good blend. Smoked slow, this is a very mellow blend that issues a thick, creamy, and sweet smoke and a truly great room note. It is very rich and it stays lit better than most high priced blends. It smokes all the way down to the bottom of the pipe with no relites and it smokes clean and with no dottle or moisture at the bottom of the pipe. The ash is dark gray in color. This is a great aromatic if only that it does not smoke wet nor leave goop in one's pipe. But add that to the great flavor and this is better than most. I do recommend it and I will be searching for a supply of this blend. One of the best OTC blends I have smoked really.

The last two reviewers noted that this fine blend had a lot of bite, and tastes sour. I can only think that they don't know how to smoke a pipe if they let this gentle blend bite them.

Dutch Masters is a very gentle blend of burley, virginia, and cavendish tobaccos with a bourbon flavouring added. It's easy to lite, easy to keep lit, and tastes like tobacco. I can taste the sweetnes of the flavouring as well, which really goes good with the tobacco. The room aroma will draw complements.

This is a time tested, and well respected aromatic, that really tastes great.

This stuff was SOUR. It burned my tongue. had an odor instead of an aroma. One of the only things worse than Briar patch's "Golden Coconut" (Sacramento). Made me want to puke.

Based on the generally favorable reviews for this blend have tried it on several occasions. Flavor is indeed not unpleasant, but for this smoker it bites horribly making the overall experience decidedly negative.

Just signed up on the Altadis website and presto, this showed up with three other 1.5 oz pouches in my mailbox. Nice gesture that. As for the tobacco, it wasn't bad. It did seem to leave the toungue feeling like there was a chalky feeling left over but I wouldn't call it a bite. The flavor is there, but very mild, and the smoke smells even milder. I thought I could detect some kind of synthetic fake taste to it sort of like one of the cheap cigarettes that I hated so much. You might like this if you want a mild smoke but I prefer something with a little more kick and taste. Still, not bad after a couple of bowls and I'll probably try a few more fills before I dump it in the big jar where I store all the "cast offs".

Update: 04/23/07. A year later and the same pouch is still fresh. I've just about finished the pouch, and I must say that it improved with age. Excellent flavor, tobacco taste comes through nicely. Bourbon flavor doesn't overpower the smoke. I must upgrade this aged tobacco from my previous review.

However, cannot find it anywhere in my area.

Original review: I received this as a part of the Sampler. I remember trying this brand years ago, as my late father would on occasion buy me a new tobacco to try. At that time, it was a buy one, get one free bundle from Kmart.

Nostalgia aside, this is a flavorful, whiskey tobacco. A little too much whiskey for my taste. Very little tobacco flavor comes through. I think I will blend the package with something like Carter Hall or Prince Albert. A hint of whiskey might suit my taste.

I got a buy one get one on this at the local Tobacco Barn...A friend in Germany wanted a sample of all the OTC blends I could find, So I kept one to try for the heck of it. Not bad stuff...Actually a good bourbon topping! Nice nutty burly. Burned clean- Smoked in a cob mind you- and no hint of a bite. I would do this again. It doesn't take any effort, the room note was good, because my wife actually said it wasn't too bad- and she thinks it all stinks.... All in all a good find for a simple smoke.

When I lit my first pipeful, I thought i was smoking trash. I found it was coating my tongue with a pasty film. But I persisted with the pouch, and by the time I got half way through, this has become one of my favorite blends. It's got a great tobacco taste with just a hint of flavorings. I don't experience any nicotine kick, maybe its one minor flaw. It doesn't bite and burns through after one light to a nice, white ash for caking. I have received more compliments on the aroma of this tobacco than any other I have ever smoked. Even strangers have come up to me to remark on its nice odor. This is definitely going to be one of my go-to tobaccos. Don't look to this to taste anything like the Dutch Masters cigar.

So far this is the the best tobacco I've tried in the Altadis sampler. That really isn't saying much, though; I had to dump it out after 3/4 bowl instead of after 1/2 bowl like the others. On the positive side, it burns pretty well and doesn't get very gooey. The room note is nice. It has very little flavor. At about 3/4 bowl the cheap quality of the underlying tobacco comes through and it gets bitter and harsh. Lane BLWAB is a similar, but better, tobacco than this.

I received a pouch in the Altadis sampler and was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this. My taste runs more toward English blends and the only other cavendish I've smoked is 1Q (which I enjoy). Dutch Masters Cavendish packs easily and burns well, down to a fine white ash. No dottle. Very little bite and a nice aroma. I don't know that I detected the smell of bourbon (other than in the sniffer at my side)but there is a sweetness apparent. The moisture level was just right; lighting was easy. I smoked my first bowl and enjoyed it so much, I smoked two more in succession. Nicotine strength is low. I felt somewhat guilty that it wasn't one of the more esoteric blends but, hey, this is a tobacco I really liked and will be adding it to my regular rotation. Give it a try if you haven't already.

An American drugstore Burley-n-Bourbon blend, rather typical in construction and components.

The casing is slightly synthetic but generally nice, though it can lean a bit toward incense as the liquor flavoring burns off. For the most part of the bowl this aspect stays under the radar and lets the whiskey do the talking.

Like any other product in this category, this can and will bite if not smoked with a little patience.

Plenty of aromatic acrobatics for those around you and a little tobacco flavor for you. It is what it is, and ain't bad for the price.

this is one aromatic that u know from the moment u open the pouch is gonna be aromatic.i knew the aroma would be great, which it was.i liked the way the whiskey flavor came out not even halfway through the bowl.this wasn't strong in the least,it was perfect.i would recommend this for a beginner as it doesn't bite and its an all around good aromatic for those just starting the pipe smoking adventure.after trying mixture 79,sutliffe has redeemed themselves.

This came in a well sealed pouch as a free sample pack from Altadis. A great smoke when you need an Aromatic and still want some tobacco flavor. Very smooth and almost totally bite free. Well recommended.

Looks like I am not going to be popular with my fellow reviewers who seemed to like this blend. The Altadis Company included a pouch of this with a goodie bag full of other tobaccos at the Kansas City Pipe Show last October. I found it to be a Burley that bites and is bitter. I wasn't excited about the casing either.

On the positive side, it did have a nice room note. In fact, at the KC Show Saturday night dinner, the gentleman sitting next to me lit up the old Dutch Masters. I liked the smell so much that I loaded and lit up, too. Lucky me.

An old standby that is getting tough to find. The flavoring is not over the top, and it finishes dry and clean.

This used to be called Old Grand Dad, and I certainly remember seeing it and smelling it as a child back in the 1970s.

If you like sweet cavendish blends, it is pretty darn good...

This is an old style Cavendish blend with a light Bourbon topping, and some kind of a light casing that adds a sweetness. The casing gives a hint of something that made me think of orange from time to time.

It was a cool smoke, though as expected, it was quite one-dimensional. The Bourbon topping was quite mild and never dominated the flavor.

This is not my chosen genre of tobacco, but I am trying to write a completely objective review of it.

If you're not a fan of aromatics (I'm not), you could smoke this, but you would tire of it easily. To the aromatic smoker who would like something that is on the lighter side with a bit of tobacco flavor, this might be a good choice.
