There are some tobaccos that really need to be matched with the correct pipe, while others seem to smoke well regardless of the pipe. Don Carlos, for me, took some experimenting with different pipes before I was able to get the most out of the blend. DC arrives nearly pipe ready from a moisture standpoint and it packs with ease. It is medium in flavor and a little sweet. The Orientals and Virginia’s lead the way with the Latakia in a supporting role. There is also a hint of spice that I assume comes from a dash of Perique. Don Carlos also provides a nice volume of smoke. As is the norm, the tobaccos blended by Hans Schurch are of high quality. It reminds me a bit of Early Morning Pipe with a touch more Latakia and a bit of pepper. Recommended!

This one has a lot of components that seemed to battle each other as I smoked a few bowls. The Virginia comes on the strongest but the sweetness of the Orientals, the stewed flavor of the Perique and the "salty campfire" familiar Latakia flavor all combine to make this a most unusual offering. Although the other flavors came and went like ocean waves on the beach, the Virginia presence was always in the foreground.

I really did like this blend and compliment the blenders for putting together so many different types of leaf to make this thing work.

This is one of Hans Schurchs Classic English mixtures. I find it to be a more stout tobak, sort of like a Guinness thats been ever-so-lightly sweetened, just a bit. Moisture was fine on arrival, but I've been smoking on this for a while and notice that some drying brings out a bit of an airiness to the smoke. More of a fine mixed cut, this packs and lights well and right away you notice a tangy VA taste but with a difference. I would say it's the Orientals & Kentucky that play off the VA's to give this a semi-sweet bitters kinda flavor. Woodsy and earthy w/nut-like undertones, the taste is something above a typical English. Perhaps you could say this is a "darker" mixture taste-wise. I notice a flavor that reminds me a bit of black coffee, Columbian type. Definitely a rich blend w/Latakia adding a nice smoky texture, yet I don't feel it takes the flavor over the edge to the point of overriding the other tobaks. There is Perique in this and it's done with a not-to-heavy hand; just right for some spice. A wee bit o' bitterness as you smoke down the bowl w/the sweetness fading to a more tart/sour kinda note but not unpleasant. This smoked cool, smooth & dry, and I had no *bite* problems. Gurgled a bit about 1/3 the way down, one cleaner, no worries. Burned to a grayish ash. I like this stuff, but I wish I could pinpoint that different taste I notice. It seems to fade in & out as you're smoking. Is it lime? This is very tasty though & could be considered as an all-dayer for many. I would smoke it more often if I were in different circumstances. Give Daniel @ Synjeco a shout if you care to try some. Works for me.
